Sununu on Powell, Obama: "When you have somebody of your own race that you're proud of...I applaud Colin for standing with him"

With the 2012 general election now merely a dozen days away, on Thursday "Piers Morgan Tonight" invited John Sununu to share his incomparable blend of political perspective and impassioned insight.

Welcoming his guest live from Boston, Piers Morgan asked the former New Hampshire governor about Colin Powell's recent endorsement of the incumbent:

"Colin Powell has decided to opt for President Obama again, despite apparently still being a Republican. Is it time he left the party?"

"I'm not sure how important that is," replied the 73-year-old adviser to Mitt Romney. "Frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder if that's an endorsement based on issues, or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama?"

"What reason would that be?" wondered the host.

"Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you're proud of being President of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as John Sununu also reveals his stance on rape, and the recent comments made by Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock.

Why didn't Mr. Morgan call Mr. Sununu out on his veiled racist statement? Both Mr. Sununu and Mr. Romney are white but that isn't brought up as a reason. It's only because Mr. Powell and the President are black that such a myopic viewpoint would be presented. Mr. Morgan failed to recognize the importance of Mr. Sununu's racist remarks.

Obama and a non-white has to prove that they are capable to do the job before they could be hired and tagged with accountability. On the other hand, most if not all white people are presumed qualified even in some cases they are not. They accountability requirement is much lower than any non-white. I love this country dearly becauae it is better that any other country on the face of this earth but it is far away from perfection. Racism, gender gap, religion still plays a major role in this country and not going to be any better as it would continue to see economic downward trend. The bad part is the rules are different when you are CEO, rich person than you are a worker.

I appreciate your insighful remarks. I find Su-no-no 's remarks bordering on racism, but not exactly. I what do not appreciate is his success at portraying this deep thinker, someone who walked away from politics the Jim Brown walked away from the NFL, as shallow and suddenly myopic enough to only see the color of a man's skin! Colin, today, could decide to run for office and easily win. The white america cannot remember when black america subjected the President to its own challenges and he successfully fended us off, publicly stating that he is the President of the USA.

That is not true. Actually, your statement is racist. I voted for Obama in 2008 without even noticing his race. I am firing him this time around not because he is black, but because he is a fraud.

Stop playing the race card! That is shallow!

I don't know why he didn't just go on and call a spade a spade. he's made it very apparent that the Romney people are really the Reagan people...they didn't like Blacks then and they don't like us now...but their hate doesn't stop with Black..its a race race that's true...but there's a class race going on as well. They play whichever is the time...we really need to open our eyes!

Mitch, what you are saying about the Reagan administration simply is not true. While it is yet to be seen from the Romney administration, Black indiiduals and families have done the best under the Reagan administration than under any other – personally, professionally, and financially. i had to do a short research paper on Reagan, and that was one thing you do not hear from the news or educators, but it is in the books. I thought that was super interesting information

I'm sorry but you are sadly mistaken....times were the TOUGHEST in the past 50years for minorities as a whole during the Reagan administration....during his presidency we saw the rise in drug addiction and crimes related to drugs, mass poverty and extreme unemployment, not to mention an AIDS epidemic...all factors that directly affect minorities! no time in America's history (other than slavery for African descendants) has so many factors occurred all at the same to affect minorities...I don't know where you did you research but you have it so wrong..I encourage you to talk to minorities...ask them about their experiences during the Reagan Administration and I'm sure you would get a more realistic picture of what occurred then...the books are catered in a way to continue the ridiculous idolatry for someone who was a likeable person but a poor leader

You would think that this person, Sununu, who was born in Cuba to Palestinian/ Salvadorean parents would be more sensitive to racial issues. Just a generation ago he would NOT have been considered part of the "white" race in America. Sununu's rant just proves the "Southern Strategy" is alive and still being used by the Rebublican Party. I have always believed that ANY black person (Do you hear me Condi?) who is a Republican is a FOOL.

Also, he is very ugly man externally AND internally..

Reality is that Powell is a RINO - Republican in Name Only and only when it is convenient and expedient. When you change sides that easily you clearly identify what party YOU REALLY supported.

Why is it that when an African-American man endorses another, he is a RINO? Using that logic, does Condi Rice, endorsing a white man, make her an Uncle Tom? Probably not, but in the narrow, racist, views held in this country, that is exactly what we get. For years, the only choice of presidential candidates were white men, and no one had a problem with anyone endorsing them. Get real people! When he was working for 'your' candidates, you held Mr. Powell in such high regard, but now that he chooses to exercise his right to vote his concious, all that has changed. Sadly, the Republickkkan party has digressed into a party of hate, divisiveness, and fear. If they would spend half of much energy working for the country as they do tearing down the president, we could really get things done.

Powell is not an African American. He voted for Obama in order to give him an additional four years to finish the job. Sununu admires Powell for supporting Obama, loyal but not smart. Eight years of failed policies puts Powell on the loyal but wrong side.

You really need some better analytical skills than this. In the 2008 election, 96% of black voters voted for Obama. 96%! The same is anticipated in the 2012 election. Do you think maybe there is a correlation there between blacks wanting to vote for a black president? Uh, yeah, I think so. So statistically speaking, there is a 96% chance that Colin Powell would vote for Obama. Is that a racist statement? Only to liberal.

Did 96% of white voters vote for McCain in 2008? Of course not. It was approximately 50%. Will 96% of white voters vote for Romney? Again, of course not.

Why don't you guys make a big deal when blacks vote in huge numbers for a white candidate, which we usually do since we really never had a black candidate? In the history of America blacks nor America in general has never even been given a chance to vote on a candidate of color, why shouldn't blacks or America in general be exited about it? It is simply because if whites cannot have it their way the'd rather destroy something. You whites think that everything should be in your best interest, so get ready for the fact that you will not be the majority soon.

Seriously???? It's only a matter of time until the U.S. populace is ready to assimilate into the global cognitive awakening process. Enough with these American brain washings. Brainwashed people don’t see how brainwashed they are, but the rest of the world sees it and hates American greed and arrogance. We pretend to be the moral compass for the world, but there is something fundamentally shameful about American ethics, and everyone knows it – except Americans.

God help America if the former governor Mitt Romney becomes next American president – cold blooded, deeply cynical man, who sees the country as completely divided, as two completely different sets of people, a pragmatic 'amoral' capitalist with blind personal religious ambitions, lastly but not least, extremist who plans to change the world.

    Dear Piers Morgan

The fact that America is a beacon that the world looks to for aspirations of liberty, common sense and democracy is indisputable. For as long as I can remember, my abstracted picture of a world heirearchy has always had America at the top, and it was a picture I was always very comfortable with. In other words, I swore allegiance to my country's leadership on national matters, but aligned myself behind American leadership on matters international.

My perspective has however faced serious headwinds in the past decade. The most disastrous one was of course the war in Iraq, and while I was glad to see the back of Saddam Insane, the way American leadership went about justifying, executing and then defending the war effort (plus its less than stellar treatment of both Iraqi civilians and American troops) profoundly shook my faith in America's position at the helm of world leadership. My belief in America was further eroded by its part in the global economic downturn of 2008, and at some point during those dark times, I actually despaired.

Barack Obama's election in 2008 went a long way towards restoring my shattered faith in America. For maybe the first time, I was able to envision multicultural harmony of purpose in America as not just political rhetoric, but a practical ideal as well that its citizenry believed in. This was the kind of America I wanted at the top of my picture.

But again, this view of America is being threatened.

President Obama's tenure, it must be said, hasn't matched up to the dizzying heights of expectation it was premised upon. The economy is still out of the count, and unemployment figures still make for pretty disturbing reading. But there are two things which are cast iron undisputable. 1, President Obama has worked really hard to stem the tide, and 2, although at a frustratingly slow pace, his policies seem to be working. And those of us who look up to this ideal American leadership find that encouraging, and are filled with hope when American statesmen like Colin Powell endorse that perspective.

But when we see the kind of rhetoric Rush Limbaughs, the Sarah Palins, the Michelle Bachmanns, the Glenn Becks, the Reince Preibuses and now the John Sununus are subjecting the president to, and then get to understand that these RWNJs represent or shape the views of a significant proportion of the American people, we despair.

      • Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

Mr. Sununu needs to get his head examined. I have to disagree that Powell's endorsement of the President is about race and had nothing to do with policy. That is totall false. First and foremost, the last time I checked, President Obama's mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, great great great grandmother, great great great great grandmother were all WHITE as LILLY. And by the way Sir, President Obama was elected POTUS simply because millions of WHITE Americans across this great nation overlooked race and voted for him. That is the great thing about this country. But unfortunately, the sad thing about this country is that right wing racists and bigoted confederates like you are conspiring to derail this administration and our American democracy by trying to return this great country half a century backward to the Jim Crow era. Sir you need to go hide under a rock and remain there forever.

Now in terms of foreign policy Sir, perhaps Mr. Powell sees Romnesia as unfit to be commander in chief simply because it was Romnesia who said it wasn't worth moving heaven and earth to find Bin Laden, the mastermind of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. And that is the same Romnesia who railed about the President's foreign policy on the campaign trail but failed to present his own foreign policy as he agreed with the President's foreign policy during the last debate. Furthermore, perhaps Colin Powell was annoyed by Romnesia's lack of geography when he showed that he didn't know that Syria and Iran din't share a border. And to suggest that Syria is Iran's route to the sea when the countries don't even share a border shows how unqualified Romney is for the position of cammander in chief. Perhaps someone should tell Romnesis that Iran has hundreds of miles of coast line called the Persian Gulf.

Furthermore, during Romnesia's controversial 47% speech he gave to his rich friends earlier this year, Romnesia demonstrated that he does not have a formula for Mid East peace whatsoever. For example, when a doner asked him how does he think the Palestinian situation can be solved and what can he do about it, this is what Romnesia said: " I'm torn by two perspectives in this regard – one is which I've had for some time, which is that the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace. And the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish. I look at the palestinians as not wanting to see peace and that there is no way to resolve the conflict. And so what you do is you say you move things along the best way you can. You hope for some degree of stability but you recognize that its going to remain an unresolved problem. And we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve." Mid East peace is untinkable and almost impossible to solve? That is the kind of commander in chief and leader of the free world we need? A leader who is so pessimistic as to dismiss any real chance of Mid East peace??? Yes, Mitt Romnesia's Middle East formula for peace is you punt the football and hope it doesn't result in a touch back. Simply appalling.

Obama/Biden 2012 by a LANDSLIDE! Never mind the manipulated polls!

I totally agree with most everyone so far. but I wasn't shocked I was pleased to hear it today because Colin Powell was the only member of the Bush administration that I could respect. ,, I told my husband this morning after about an hour after I heard of the indorsement that I was just waiting for the rtwngers to put their foot in their mouths I just knew one of them was going to play the racist reasoning . Their bigotry comes thru more and more each day. I think their brains are getting tired and the truth is starting to roll out. they want us to be back in time to when white men controled the world and they also want to own the world. Now I am not bashing white men I am a white women married to a white male but this has to end. they need to grow up ,
watch out latin america , In the last debate romney mentioned your counties to invest in resourses their , which in repub speak means conquer reap and pilage. but it won't help the usa any, just the rich investors. I think these super rich guys sit around like people playing a chess game , just trying to find a strategy to be the richest men in the world no matter what. greed and ego. Just like wanting to tell women how to live their own lives.Just leave religious beliefs out of government.
my god they are making so much more of Benghazi than they did the fact that bush also had warning of the terror attack by planes and nothing was done to secure anything or find out who and that killed 3000 civilian americans on our own soil. let them find out exactly what happened and yes they probably played it down until they knew for sure. but it is better than the constant terror scares under bush when everyone was jumping out of their skin when a backpack was left in a subway. I know it is bad that they died in benghazi but our guys are dying by the very police they trained in afganistan and what makes them less important.
I just can't trust the republ right now. I would rather have slow and steady than fast and furious. Look Obama made promises but didn't know what he was walking into when he made them. if I buy a house and think oh yeah in two years we will have enough to put in a pool and sunroom then we move in and the plumbing goes out and the roof leaks well guess what the pool and the sunroom will have to wait. it is that simple. everyone stop blaming obama and put the blame where it is needed the rich republican pilagers. I am an independent but am voting obama again the only republican I think they may have had a chance if McCain had ran, I think it could have been his year ,, but I hope they just don't vote in Romney because he is republ . if they do then it will almost proves my point that the repub would vote in a dog if you put a repub sign on it. sad state we are in hopefully whoever wins things will get better for everyone but I really have my doubts putting in the richest men in the world. they really scare me power and greed and money are definately becoming the source of all evil
. Just curious but does anyone know if the republ. have a secret meeting room for men only that have a 666 on the address and the false gods they pray to are the presidents on the face of each dollor bill. lol that may be a bit mean spirited. sorry

Sununu is consistently so far right he is off the road somewhere in the woods of New Hampshire. And I suppose he favors Romney because he is 'white'? Silence by Pierce after that comment is about what was due. What I was also upset about was the previous session with the three women (of course Sununu did not listen because women's issues are being pushed aside) and the misinformation campaign by the Republicans that the Democrats are making too much of women's issues. I think most women would like not to have Roe v. Wade be an issue but contrary to what the female commentator said the court has moved to the right and women's reproductive rights are under attack. Romney is less inconsistent on his economic views but his social and political views will be shaped by his backers and they are the conservative right that continues to erode women's rights and brought us hawkish policies that turned the world against us when we forced through the invasion of Iraq. The economy is on the mend, but what won't be fixed for decades is a further tilt of the supreme court to the right and another turn to the Cheney/Rumsfeld foreign policies. Romney can fake right/fake center, but we know that he knows how to pay dividends to his true backers and unfortunately for the Republicans once in a while the curtain gets lifted and it is not a pretty side of the U.S.A.

Well maybe because Romney's claim that he would create jobs and fix the economy without any details of how, other than I have done it before is false. Massachusetts job creation during his time came in second from last in all states, would have been last if there was no Katrina. He did not balance his budget, came in with deficit in the good economic time. He did not raise taxes like he promised but added Fees. He let more jobs go out overseas, with a rate of double the numbers compared to the rest of US (14% to 7%). Or maybe because he does not agree with equal pay for women and tax cuts for the very very rich (top 1%) and does not like Green Energy (he like Oil companies). I don't know why You trust him?

It is ironic though how the guy who was bishop in a church that didn't let black fully participate in until 1978( If Obama went to a black separatist church that didn't allow whites don't you think pierce would think it was a story? Colin Powell campaigned for Geroge W Bush twice. He does not agree with Obama based on his policies. He is not a liberal democrat. He is deeply concerned about his image and it is very very hard to be a black republican. Any black person who says they oppose Obama is considered an enemy and attacked. Black Republicans are literally reviled and despised, nevermind that the Republicans freed the slaves ( against the pro slavery Dems) and sponsered and supported every single piece of civil rights legislation ( against the pro segregation Dems) until 1964. They oppose affirmative action and huge welfare programs and they are labled racists now. That is the standard.

"Why didn't Mr. Sununu's racist remarks..."

When the actress Stacy endorsed Romney, you criticized all the people that were against her, saying that she has the right to vote for whoever she want. I agreed with you on that, but why can't the same right apply to Colin Powell when he made his choice based on facts and substance. why didn't you condemn Mr. Sununu when he called Colin Powell racist on your show. Sununu's remark is racist – for claiming that the only plausible 'reason' Powell would support Obama is because of race.

    We are confronted with a dark Tea Potty Republican mentality that is anti-this, anti-that – ad nauseam, as in: anti-regulation – anti-consumer – "anti-Middle Class" – anti-government – anti-environment – anti-Healthcare – anti-Obama – "anti-science & arts" – anti-tax anti-education – anti-family-planning – anti-media – anti-Hollywood – anti-Islam – anti-immigrant – anti-gun-control" – yet Sununu claims 'same race' is the only plausible Powell motive.

From Obama's first day in office the Tea Potty Republican mentality has been devoted to an obstructionist strategy solely dedicated to ensuring that the Obama presidency would fail in everything it attempted to accomplish. Tea Potty Republicans don't stand "FOR" anything . Where a normal caring, nurturing, patriotic, positive person would do everything they could to 'support' their country in its efforts to recover from a colossal Bush era economic melt-down, we find Tea Potty Republican misanthropes rooting for failure and sabotaging the legislative process in a determined effort to 'ensure' failure.

Powell has a torrent of compelling, valid reasons to support Obama. The race issue never gets on Powell's list. BUT racism is certainly on the top of Sununu's list.

Mr. Morgan you as journalist and in this case as the interviewer have an obligation to be true and independent in your reporting. So you should have commented on his response and labeled it what it was "racial". At the very least should have said you do not support any racial comments or that you do not agree with it.

I personally take offense, although it doesn't matter, at this garbage! It seem to be okay for White guys to use race, but when a person of color does it- it's all of sudden wrong. This minority/majority garbage is so out dated that it stinks. You can't convince me that after all of these years, that Blacks are still a minority. Statistically speaking, Blacks out numbered Whites during slavery and beyond. However, when the race that is in control is calling the "shots" in economics, anyone can be named as the minority class. If people think they are the minority/majority then that will be the perception of the populous. Race doesn't matter, and shouldn't matter! As long as men like Sununu continue to fan the flames of division, then this country will continue to be a laughing subject of the world. It's perplexing that they continue to identify the President as Black and will not acknowledge his White roots. Is Black that intimidating and powerful that it nullifies the White in the mix?

Of course it's racial. Powell doesn't have a single thing in common with Barak Obama when it comes to the issues. There literally IS only one thing they have in common. Note that no one blames Powell for standing by Obama because of race, though I admit that I am disappointed with Powell for doing so. Breaking the racial ceiling for president is important–just as important as breaking the gender ceiling–but the country has far more pressing issues to solve than that. As a woman, I would not vote for a woman to be president just for the historic privilege of seeing that ceiling broken. I would not put my country at risk in so many other ways to a candidate who is unqualified for everything BUT making that historic precedent. And I'm disappointed in Powell for doing it...and in not running for president himself. Colin Powell I would vote for as Pres in a heartbeat, not because he's black, but because he has experience and integrity. Colin, instead of supporting Obama, run yourself, please!!!!

Is it because he has created so many jobs in the black community ? NO ! Its because he is black ! This is an obvious truth ! To call Mr sununu a racist for stating the obvious is ignorant.

It's a shame Sonunu thinks otherwise. Is it correct to assume that the majority of white males who are voting for Romney are supporting him just because of Romney's race?

He has 98% support in the black community. He doesn't have that kind of support in any other community. He is the first black president. JFK got a huge majority of Irish Catholic votes in the 1960 election largely because Irish Catholic Americans who had been gradually trending Republican in the 1950's, switched back to the Dems to support their guy.

Piers Morgan should have asked John Sununu: Are you for Romney because he is white like you? It is very apparent that one of the reasons President Obama has been treated so hatefully, with so many attempts to paint him as 'not one of us', 'of foreign origin', 'not a Christian', etc. is because one of his parents was black. Too many people in our country continue to hold prejudices toward those who are not white.

Based on CNN's 2008 exit poll data, 95% of African American men and 96% of African American women voted for Obama. This is proof that Americans vote based on race. It should not be this way, but the proof is in the numbers. We need to get past race as a nation and vote on the issues.

I believe party affiliation is the key driver in any election. However, there was no change in party affiliation votes. It remained at 89% for democrats. So, why did the African American vote increase by 7% while the white vote only increased by 2% for the democratic candidate? Why did Roland Martin cry when Obama was declared the winner? It's naive to think that race does impact some people and their vote, regardless of race. It was more of an issue in the last election, but it still an issue in this election (not just African Americans). We need to vote on the issues and leave both party affiliation and race behind if we are going to move forward as a nation.

CNN and CBS as use the race issue to explain how Americans vote, I could not disagree more. For instance, if Sherman was the republican candidate and Biden was the dem candidate, I'm pretty sure that black voters and minorities would prefer Biden even though Sherman is black. Furthermore, If Palin was the republican candidate, I'm pretty sure white women and would not have chosen Palin because of that. To put race before everythin that what is racist and stupid, that means even though the person you want to vote for is incompetent as long he has your skin color he got your vote that simply absurd.

When Stacey Dash (black actress) came out in support of Romney, African Americans were outraged and saw this as the ultimate betrayal. Could you imagine Colin Powell not supporting his fellow black politician? It would have been scandalous. It is a known fact that black people (97%) will vote for Obama because they are proud to have an African American President, regardless of his policies. It’s the simple truth and I wish Americans would stop this politically correct bullsh** and start talking the truth. There is NOTHING WRONG with saying that your loyalty lies with the people of your own race that you are proud of. This “political correctness” is pathetic.

@ Cheryl....what many people like yourself do not realize, is that many so-called "Black people" DISENFRANCHISE themselves from the Black culture, such as Stacy Dash (Miss 90210). They become "ashamed" of their true culture (long before even becoming a star), and distance themselves from their people. They then occupy a space called "limbo", where they can never fully be accepted by one culture, yet stricken from the other, due to their own devices. Skin pigment means nothing....Black culture is a state of heart and mind, actions and deeds.

I'm curious – did you the same thing about Bush when these US diplomats died?

        * Laurence Foley, assassinated in Jordan in 2002?
        * John Granville, ambushed in Sudan in 2008?
        * Steven Stefani, killed by a 2007 bomb attack in Afghanistan?
        * David Foy, killed in a 2006 terrorist attack in Pakistan?
        * Stephen Sullivan, killed in a 2005 rocket attack on the US Embassy in Iraq?
        * Keith Taylor, killed in the same 2005 attack as was Sullivan?
        * Barbara Heald, killed in the same 2005 attack as were Sullivan and Taylor?
        * Edward Seitz, killed in a 2004 rocket attack in Iraq?
        * James Mollen, killed in a 2004 attack in Iraq?
        * Barbara Green, killed in a 2002 terrorist attack in Pakistan?

I do not post this list to draw comparisons between Obama and Bush – the fact of the matter is that Foreign Service can be inherently dangerous. We have lost many career Foreign Service Officers (and 6 ambassadors) in terrorist attacks. Our diplomats routinely travel to dangerous locations, and are to be saluted for their service. Politicizing their deaths does them a grave disservice.

(Do a web search for "AFSA memorial plaque list" to see further details – as of 2012, their (admittedly incomplete) memorial list carried 236 names of FSOs who died in the line of duty while serving in 64 countries.)

If you don't think your taxes will go up under a Romney administration, you should look at the history of tax cuts.

      1) Reagan cut taxes, then raised them.
      2) GHWBush "no new taxes"! – then raised taxes.
      3) GWBush implemented tax cuts that are now the BIGGEST single driver of Federal deficits. (Do the research)
      4) Romney did cut taxes in Massachusetts, but then raised "fees" to astronomical levels (an increase of $400 million in his first year as Governor!) and made massive cuts in state aid to local governments, forcing them to cut services, raise their taxes, or both.

Republicans keep saying that tax cuts will fix the economy and, ultimately, result in greater tax income for government, but go look at the historical IRS figures; we've been trying this since Reagan, and it simply does not happen.

When Romney & Ryan talk about "returning things to the states," you should keep in mind that if you like/want/need those services, your state and local taxes will have to go up in order to continue providing those services.

Chanti, Powell could not openly endorse political candidates while serving in the US military. He didn't even claim a particular political affiliation until 1995, when he announced that he was a Republican.

It should noted that he was discussed as a potential VP candidate on both the GOP and Democratic tickets in 1992. He's VERY much a moderate political voice, and (being a moderate msyelf), I can see him endorsing either GOP or Democratic candidates.

Go back and read Powell's 2008 endorsement of Obama; he cites several specific factors that played into his decision. Reading his words, it's obvious that his was no knee-jerk, superficial "just because" endorsement. There is no surprise in his 2012 endorsement – but chalking it up to racial loyalty is an insult.

He didn't endorse Clinton for two reasons: 1st, at that time he couldn't endorse anyone yet; 2nd he preferred to endorse Barrack Obama, that is a very good and simple reason. I explain: if two people said the same thing and I should decide, I would choose the person that I preferred, depending on several parameters. For example between the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Brad Pitt I would prefer the latter (don't begin to think I'm comparing the Hunchback to either Clinton or Obama, or that I'm against diversities, please!!!)

If you stop and think about it, Sununu's racism is directed at both President Obama and General Powell. We've all seen the thinly veiled racism of Republicans where Obama is concerned–from Romney characterizing him as "foreign" to the "born in Kenya" birthers like Donald Trump and the "neo-colonial Kenyan thought process" from Dinesh D'Souza and Newt Gingrich, but this is something different.

Sununu is suggesting that Colin Powell–a career soldier who was an ARVN adviser in Vietnam, rose to the rank of full General, and served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff AND Secretary of State–is so shallow that he will automatically support Obama solely on racial criteria. THAT is pure, unadulterated racism, and it's directed at both Obama and Powell.

Here's your modern Republican Party, folks.

Gen Powell is one of the most clear headed thinkers in Washington, and when he makes a judgment call, he's thought it through carefully. Based on what he's seen and witnessed in our Government, people should take his thoughts and opinions seriously, especially his fellow Republicans. Sununu is just irritated that he can't sell Powell's endorsement to get more votes for Willard.

This is really sad how this man have camed on this station and clearly he is a racist Not only he is but most of the reporters on CNN is. He only said what Romney, Chaney and the rest have been saying behind close doors. I have never took out time to vote or watch the vote race but I have found myself watching just to see that all the hard steps African American have took in this USA, their are still people trying to hold us back. President Obama Have not been able to do all he can do because people like Sunnunu and others have held him back. President Obama and his wife have two daughters that they have to watch and see if not now but latter how his father was treated because of the color of his skin. that's sad I took kids in over 20 yrs and I know how you treat their parents affect them, no matter what condition their parents are in. Not on time have Romney have been attack like the President and he is the worst he tell so many lies and can't be trusted. I have been a Pastor wife over 20 years and a pretty good judge of people I have watch Mrs Romney my option is not good about her, not judging but I can't help watch what I see,

Too many of us don't seem to stop to consider where Mr. John Sununu's ancestors came from; he's of the Lebanese stock, has muslim (Islam) ancestry for God's sake. He's no white; he's a muslim in fair skin. He pretends to belong to the white race. Not at all. People like him can mimic and pretend to be something they are not, and criticize other races lest you think he's someone else. Make note, dear friends.

I challenged my GOP friends to listen to Gov. Sununu's comments and decide if they really wanted him speaking for thir party. I asked them if the wanted a leader (Gov. Romney) that would sent this type of person out to speak on his behalf, on behalf of all Republicans. Then, I asked them, if they didn't, to please write Gov. Romney and demand he denounce these comments. They started on FB...

Um hm. I just emailed Romney for President: I am a white republican voter. I watched John Sununu's recent interview where he lambasted President Obama and Colin Powell. I am deeply offended by his remarks. I am horrified that you have him out there representing you, and my party. I am even more horrified that you might agree with his ignorant hatred. If he represents your views then you are not the man I want to vote into office in November. I value people of all colors and creeds. Everyone should be given respect. Do you value all life or only white-life? If you are not prejudiced then you should not have those people representing you. I do not want Sununu representing me, or my party. He makes us look like ignorant hating fools.

    We're waiting for a response...

I sent this comment to Romney's website. Let's see if I get a response. 1 week out and I am disgusted by my own party. I am a registered Republican that has voted in every elections since I was 18. I am having a very hard time supporting my party with people like Sununu speaking for our party. Do you share his belief? Do you support his belief? Ohio has enough hatred in the Republican party with things like the Grand Ole Pub restaurant that displays all President's pictures except President Obama. When questioned why they said it is because John Boehnner comes in and they don't want to offend him. So instead they choose to offend everyone else by not displaying all Presidents. The office holds a level of respect whether you like the current President or not. These types of off color comments about color make it harder and harder to stay with the Republican party. As a leader you hopefully can get your party in order. Show that in this week and you may not loose votes in Ohio. Currently I am on a campaign to ask all my FaceBook and Twitter contacts to watch and see if Romney addresses this issue and puts his party in it's place. The Romney/Ryan ticket needs to show that this type of behavior is not reflective of all Republicans/Tea Party candidates. At this point I am undecided. Waiting for your response and or public action toward this matter. #republicansmakingmesickaboutnow

Most people writing comments here don´t get it. Pierce invited Sununu and dropped the Powell question hoping he could get Sununu to make a racist statement. When Sununu almost did he baited him with the "What would that be'" and Bingo! got 90% of what he hoped for. He did not have to say anything more, he achieved what he wanted: 1. score a news hit, and 2. help the Obama campaign. Had he "called him on it" pointing out that the answer could be interpreted as racist would have given Sununu the opportunity to excuse or explain and diminish the impact. So liberals got what they wanted and should not be complaining about obviously biased left wing Pierce not being "hard enough".

Was the comment racist? I would have to be inside Sununu's head to know that, but I think he might be right which I suppose makes me a racist to many here, but if his opinion is right, then it is just a simple fact. I think I remember some reporter asking a similar question to Powell in an interview four years ago. Don't remember his answer, but it would be interesting to look it up. By the way, I think Powel is a great guy.

Cool it guys. This is no big deal.

I guess that is why sinuno is for Romney, because they are both white. That logic is clear and utter racism. Whites for whites and blacks for blacks. Well guess what, I am a republican and I am also voting for Obama. I am not black, I am white and I am not voting for someone just because we have the same color skin. This is Romney's head man and it would make sense you hire people that think like you. I have no doubt Romney is a racist although he tries to hide it, but it was evident by the way he spoke to Obama with no respect for the President, but would respect a white President. These racists have not stopped being racists, but stopped being tot obvious with their racist views. Some, like sinunu, are such a racist they do not even understand waht they said was racist and think their secret racist views are still safe and secure. Romney is a racist and he will also, he has already to me, say something that proves he is a racist but will not understand what he said is racist. The ones that have the most racist views do not really understand that racism is wrong and only understand they have to conceal it, but cannot conceal it at all times because they just do not get it. If you try to defend what sinunu said you are also a racist and do not get it and you are also going to vote for Romney. I may be a racist since I hate racists, but since a racist is not a race I guess I am a antiracist, or how about a republicist. I registered as a republican and will not change I am a republican; I did not change the republicans changed and they should quit the party and start a new one and call it the Calvincans and out "in money we praise" on their currency and let us real republicans have the party back. If you do not agree with everything the rich guys want to do and think they want you out and that was no always the republican way that used to beleive in the market place of ideas not follow us blindly with hate and lies.

Governor Sununu is a racist and he is envious of President Obama’s achievements. How can he say the president is lazy. It is most unfortunate. I am sure he’s older than the president’s father. Since his political life has he ever aspired to be US president? Of course not. He cannot pass the primary how much more of being nominated as presidential candidate. He cannot compete with the president in any debate?

True, it is a bit straneg for such a prominent Republican to endorse a democrat but the reasoning given to justify calling Poweel's position racist (and supporting |Sununu) are almost ridiculoous.

    1) 96% of blacks vote for Obama so they oviously voted based on race:

Over 90% of blacks voted for Kerry and for Gore. Blacks always vote in high numbers for Democrats so that should not be a suprise for any informed or rational person and shows that it doen't necessarily follow that the high numbers for Obama are based on race. Furthermore, it should be expected that after the history of blacks in this country, which started with forced slavery and continued to the piount that 50 years ago a black person in the South would have been forced to drink from separate water foumtains, could entertain in but not frequent entertainment venues, could be killed without repercussions fro things like looking at a white woman, blacks would be excited about the prospect of a black President. Looked at from a long term histroical piint of view, this should be an expected phenomenon that shold diminish over time. Blacks and whites have never had an equal place in American society. Besides, there is MUCH more evidence that certain sections of the white population aer voted agsainst Obama becasue of race (the racist facebook and twitter scandels, teh Rush Limbaugh, FOX News brigade vieled and not so vielwed racist viewpoints) than objective evidence that bklacks are voting for Obama becasue of race. But again, Republicans and those pesky facts and evidence. . .

Secondly, is it possible that Powell just agrees more with Obama's positions at this point than with the right wing direction the Republican PArty has taken over the past few years? Like many, he may just believe that the country will be a more compassionate, incusive and progressive place with Obama in charge. The Republican Party demands total obediance and does not brook any dissent int he ranks (look at Gov. Christie who rightly said that the pain and suffering of his citizens was more important than any political considerations as has been constantly vilified by Republicans ever since). I believe that Powell endorsed Obama because he believes that his policies are better for America and for the American people (and I'm sure that it didn't hurt that he is the first black president either but that is not necessarily racist). ANd there is nothing wrong with saying that.

Sununu was just continuing the SOutern strategy of making people belive that blacks are somehow different and are so ignorant and simplistic that they cannot make informed reasonable political decisions and fall lack on lazily voting just because oif race. If someone can name two Republican policies that are clearly benefiting blacks in a way that would justify blacks voting for Republicans (on the issues) rather than faulty foregone conclusons and illogical reasoning that would be the beginning of a rational decision on this issue.
