Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis on Sandy, Staten Island: "The impact of the storm, I can't even describe ... we've never faced anything like this before"
As New York City continues recovery efforts following Superstorm Sandy – a weather event described by many as the worst in the city's history – on Thursday "Piers Morgan Tonight" shed some much-needed light on the seemingly forgotten borough of Staten Island.
Joining Piers Morgan live, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis attempted to explain why her region has been so neglected:
"We're having a hard time communicating, across this borough, to city officials, and I don't think that the mayor, or other officials knew the devastation that was here until they came here today and actually saw the damage," she told the host. "It's is completely devastating. We have people here without food, water, clothes ... the impact of the storm, I can't even describe. We've never faced anything like this before."
Today Michael Bloomberg announced that Sunday's New York City Marathon will proceed as scheduled, despite the fact that the starting line is located in Staten Island. Needless to say, Malliotakis does not agree with the mayor's decision to run the race:
"It's an absolute disgrace. It is an insult to the people of this borough who are suffering such a tragedy," she insisted. "To take away even one policeman from our borough, this disaster here, to put it to supervise a marathon I think is a wrong move. We can't afford to give up any resources right now and we're still helping people that need to be saved from their homes, that need to be evacuated."
As the interview continued, Morgan then welcomed Anthony Heyne, a State Island resident forced to rescue his brother through the window of his truck as Sandy devastated the area.
Standing beside Malliotakis on New Dorp Beach, Heyne detailed the situation three days since the storm:
"Right now we all need help. Like we need as much help as we can down here."
Having lost his aunt on 9-11, Heyne revealed that this most-recent tragedy has been just as trying:
"It's not right, like, everybody is down here. We're all helping each other, but we need more people to come down and help. We need supplies, we need as much as we can."

The south goes through it "all the time"???!!! Only Katrina was as bad as Staten Island is now, and people in New Orleans (my old home town) were begging for help. How can a group of people ALL without electricity, food,water or blankets help each other enough. N.O. finally got help... you don't think Staten Island and Breezy Point should? They should just help themselves and "get over it"? If this happens to you, that's what YOU should do.
Lets not forget they all blamed bush for the disaster. LOL
I grew up in NC and live in SI now. I've met people who are generous in both areas. I've also met rotten people full of pettiness and hatred, like you. If you were truly American and a caring person, you wouldn't be telling millions of people to 'get over it' after they suffered death and tragedy. You are a disgrace and I hope you learn what generosity and compassion truly are one day.
I am a Canadian that has watched with horror all that has went on with this superstorm . The death and destruction is so horrible . My family's hearts go out to all of you . Short of donating to the Red Cross on your behalf we are at a loss as to our ability to help. We pray that you have food, water and electricity very soon. We also hope that you are able to put your lives back together . Lives lost cannot be replaced and we pray for their families.

Imagine saying F-You to NATURE. As someone who is very close to Nature I am deeply offended by Piers' Morgan comment. If there is anyone to blame it is the PATHETIC human race who is hell-bent on destroying the planet. Americans are the worst contributors to climate change than any other nation on earth. SHAME ON YOU! Also stop calling the hurricane by a name "Sandy". It personalizes it as if Nature is an Enemy of the US. Truly pathetic!
Hey Mr. Morgan........what's your personal carbon footprint and how much are you contributing to climate change in your fancy gas guzzling vehicles, numerous airplane trips (chem trails) and stuff you purchase made by factories spewing out air pollution? Hypocritical maybe? Stop blaming everyone (which you did all through your show tonight) and go look in the mirror. I lived through the ice storm and went without power for 6 days and LOVED IT! It gave me and my kids quality time together and a powerful awe and bond with NATURE! You remind me of a spoiled little kid who doesn't like to be inconvenienced but nobody cares – I know I don't. You are a pompous, over-indulged Brit who is beginning to think you need to step down from your job. Bring Larry King back CNN!
Beth: You are absolutely correct. Piers is a spoiled kid. When other channels were reporting how hard people were working to restore the norm , Piers was blaming the hospital, the electric company and anything else he can think of. If he is so negative about AMERICA he should go back to his beloved country and stop holding a job here. His job can easily be replaced by an american who has more knowledge about AMERICA.

Was this an evacuated zone? Did these folks disregard the warnings? Did anyone in that neighborhood have any emergency supplies ready? Or did they depend on rapid response and assistance? In California we know we must be prepared with emergency supplies in case we lose electical power and more from the overdue "Big One".
We figure no help will arrive for about a week. Look at the big picture folks and be prepared.
Vic, you are absolutely correct. These people had plenty of notice to evacuate. I understand that for a few of them it may have been impossible, however the majority could have been out of there. Now these stupid people are putting others at risk due to their lack of preparation. New York is the new New Orleans. They will rebuild on the same foundation knowing one day it will happen again.
your response is unconscienable and clearly shows that you have not had a tragedy in your life. There are plenty of individuals, who did as they were told and evacuated. So, because you evacuated, you should just "suck it up" because your house and all of your belongings are gone. It's not a matter of their staying or leaving, it's the fact that their entire lives have now been devastated. For the record, when you're going to speak, get your facts straight, because there were also areas, which were not told to evacuate that got damage beyond what anyone expected or anticipated!!
How about everyone stop the blame game and try and have some compassion, if you evacuated or not, none of us would be writing any of this if we were affected by it. The fact is, as was said before the humaness that must come out of this tragedy is immense and should be offered at this time. Stop the griping and start living with respect for your fellows.
As someone who was in Midland Beach, just 2 blocks from the beach, there was no one there telling residents to get out. This neighborhood, is very very poor and densely populated. There is no Internet and cable tv. the residents here, do not have cars and alot of them in fact are very elderly. The police trucks making announcements did not come up the block we were on at all, up to about 2 hours before the storm hit is the last i know. No one went door to door to tell people to leave. They needed to. It would have convinced people who were on the edge of going to go. They knew 20000 people needed to be out of their homes, and they knew up to 3 hours before the storm hit that only about 100 people were in there. They also knew that the previous year, the storm everyone did evacuate for, turned out to be nothing. Those people had looters last time and were hesitant. They needed to make more of an effort to get people to leave. AGAIN, we were prepping a house 2 blocks from the beach, and over the 2 days they were saying to leave on tv, not one police car, or group of police making announcements or knocking on doors happened. Alot of those poor people have no cars, the shelters on staten island are a 2 hour bus ride away and they cut the buses more than 24 hours before the storm hit. There were no shuttles to the shelters in the beach areas and there needed to be.

Vic and Gregory are clueless and living in a bubble somewhere. Disgusting lack of knowledge and insight. You both should have experienced 5 minutes of this devastation and you would have ran away wimpering with your tails between your legs.
I am truly sorry for the devastion. But these people were told to "Evacuate", now they want to blame the government becasue they have no food, water, clothing! If your told to evacuate, evacutate!
WHY? Cant they get some generators out to those service stations that are closed with no power? Would that speed up the situation and do they have acess to kerosene and propane heaters for the cold nights ahead.
Are there the FEMA TRAILERS for those without homes?
Why can,t they just evacuate the people on staten island to areas of new York that do have power and heat until the power comes back, . ..hopefully it won't be that long, there must be facilities that could accommodate hundreds of the neediest for a few days...Madison square gardens for instance.......
