Moore on Global Warming: "We've allowed the ignoramuses to run the show on this"
Roughly two days removed from Superstorm Sandy making landfall in the Tri-State area, on Wednesday evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomed filmmaker Michael Moore, who shared his candid perspective on the meteorological factors contributing to recent extreme weather occurrences:
"We are in big trouble. And we're still having a debate in Congress as to whether or not there really is global warming," Moore explained in disbelief. "The majority of Americans believe that we've got a climate problem. And the majority of Americans believe in science."
Joining host Piers Morgan for a live, face to face interview, the man behind such films as "Bowling for Columbine" and "Fahrenheit 9/11" suggested that Sandy should be the storm to render any further debate obsolete:
"We've allowed the ignoramuses to run the show on this. And this storm should really put an end to that."
As Morgan suggested that perhaps the situation is based on a lack of long-term meteorological history, wondering if maybe it's a cycle that also existed 500 years ago, Moore admitted that was a possibility, but with extreme consequences:
"Yeah, it could be that. You want to take the risk? You want to take the risk of that? What if you are wrong?" he asked. "What if you're wrong and we're not prepared, like we weren't prepared for this. And we won't be prepared for the next thing. We weren't prepared for the drought this summer. How many times do we have to get punched in the face before we realize, 'you know what, somebody is punching me in the face?'"

We don't know with 100% certanty that Global Warming even played a part in this storm. What we do know, is that stupid people will prosecute those that disagree with them. History repeats itself, remember Galileo and the church.

Why are Americans still debating over this? All the scientist of the world outside of the US pretty much closed the debate 20 years ago.
To stay on the side of caution is wise, but a society can also be over cautious. By doing nothing at all, the opportnity to act can become lost forever. I think what Mr. Moore is saying is that we have the opportunity to make our best effort to limit our carbon fingerprint knowing what we already know about our influence on Global Warming/Climate Change.
This hurricane sounds a lot like a prelude to the one in the book "Concealed Integrity" by Dean Joseph. Hurricane Sandy is just the beginning of what is yet to come.

susanologyblog – fair post. Terraja and George are products of our wonderful system of public education. I'm sure both of them have lots of experience in science too, just like Michael Moore. Probably both have GEDs or BAs in Marketing, but somehow have an intuitive understanding of science. Typical liberals/democrats/progressive/insert-name-here people – with absolutely no scientific evidence in support, they claim Sandy is the product of global warming. I would love see the scientific experiment that was run to conclusively prove that. In recorded history (which is about 200 – 300 years old at best), we know that storms having certain levels of destructive force appear occasionally – hundred-year storms, thirty-year storms, etc. Sandy could very well be a 500-year storm or even a 1000-year storm. We have no way of knowing how our current climate affected Sandy's strength. But some of us need to look to every tragic event as confirmation of our prejudices, no matter how convoluted the logic needs to be.
Why do Republicans insist on hiding their heads in the sand and taking such a huge risk? Even if they are too limited to understand the reality of it, wouldn't they do all they could to slow it down and preserve the planet just out of caution – on what they must understand is at LEAST a possibility that they are wrong???? If there was a storm in the forecast that could wipe out your drinking water, and you didn't think it was likely to hit you, but there was even a remote chance that you were wrong, wouldn't you go out and stock up on drinking water? Or would you rather die (and be totally unprepared) out of some obstinacy that you were right? It's madness. I am convinced there is some other issue driving such stupidity. A hope for the end of days or something crazy.

A cult by definition is a pseudo-religious group that serves the personal interests of an individual, like a living prophet or god in the form of a person everyone is sworn to obey. Piers, Mike and the meteorologist appear to be missing the boat by stating matter of factly their opinions that Sandy is a byproduct of globalwarming/climatechange. There is no doubt that the aftermath of "hurricane Sandy" is the byproduct of the synergistic and random combination of the cat1 Sandy (providing the destructive wind gusts, and rain), the approaching storm packed with Canadian arctic air (resulting in Mike's 50 degree hurricane) and the added high tide effect (adding insult to injury to the flooding) from a full moon.
As to Mike's comment to the effect that why not heed the warnings just in case globalwarming/climatechange becomes a reality: then shouldn't something be done just in case we earthling are blasted by a meteorite or any other apocalyptic event?

I think it is interesting that so many people argue that believing global warming played a role in this storm is unscientific. Where is the science that shows it did not? The fact is, we don't know.
And for those people who keep arguing that we should not make changes because global warming has not been proven. Look at history, how many times have we Americans waited too long until the problem became a disaster before acting. It sure would be nice to prevent a disaster before it happened because we did not wait until there was no other option.

Congress does not need to legislate new laws for a federal response to Superstorm Sandy. FEMA has standard policies which automatically kick in and are indeed working in the background. Insurance companies will pay for rebuilding. Time will diminish the inconvenience.

Amen. I honestly get a better report of the news from Jon Stewart than the rest of the week from CNN. Her and Piers both need to go. Corporate CNN needs to remember what Ted Turner did that made CNN great. It wasn't about putting on biased talk-shows pretending to be news but really being entertainment. CNN had real reporters, like Anderson Cooper and John King who reported the facts without speculation or interpretation. JUST THE FACTS PLEASE! We want news not the drama and prejudice of Erin Burnett or Piers Morgan. It would be nice if there was a law requiring factual basis, but the Republicans would never approve because nothing they say would be reported.

Piers, I often share your views. But your horror at what happened to the parents of the baby transported from the NYU NICU is a bit OTT – It's the phrase that you repeat regarding imagining nothing worse.. Lucky you if you really can't imagine anything worse as a parent. The baby is and will be fine. What about the 2 and 4 year olds who will not be? It seems you are using it to attack the hospital admins. I agree there are lessons to be learned. But couldn't it have been an awful lot worse?
NYU messed up. They probably pay their CEO a tonne of money, but can't afford to put in a proper backup generator system.
As for the 2 and 4 year olds. I don't know all the facts, but it seems to me, that the mother messed up on multiple occasions. Taking the kids out in the storm, letting them get washed away, then running for help, instead of chasing after them.
This is exactly why people should at least have the most minor solar or wind power generating ability on every home. I have no pity for the majority of people who have their homes in tact complaining about having no electricity.

Hopefully, we can learn some things from this disaster. Like how stupid a lot of people are are. Did people not hear about the storm 2 days before it happened. Did they not make contingency plans? How did all those houses catch fire? Were people really trying to stay warm by having indoor barbeques?

The MET Office confirms there has been no significant warming in 16 years. A guest on your show tonight confirmed that hurricane activity or intensity is unremarkable. There has been no acceleration in sea level rise. This means that observations of temperature, hurricanes and sea level rise don't suggest that our CO2 emissions have any discernable impact on climate change. Who are the deniers here???? Visit WUWT.

I did like that Moore pointed out that reporters are putting themselves in danger when they report from flooded waters or windy settings, it's dangerous and should not be allowed, do we have to have a death for someone to notice that this is insane.

Let me answer your questions Piers, especially since you can't find people really qualified to answer. Meteorologists, glaciologists, geologists, paleontologists, physical chemists, astro and geo-physicists don't typically talk to each other, so they miss a lot. It doesn't help that the average PhD in physics graduate from Harvard doesn't know the Earth's tilt causes the seasons.
As a retired academic dean but still-active physicist, I'm uniquely qualified. Don't take my word for what I am about to say because I'm not the only scientist who has independently reached these numbers and results.
There are many ways to review the weather record of Earth, and several things are sure. First, industrialization cut short the mini-ice age that resulted in the year without a summer (1814) with global warming. Man-made global warming means the next ice age will be major and soon. As a European like me, you may recall that Europe is suppose to be in an ice age right now. Second, this is the worst weather event since the storm that nearly wiped out the Clovis People about 10,000 years ago. Third, global warming is accelerating meaning the trigger for an ice age is soon. Fourth, we are at the coincidence of a 5200 year cycle and a 62,000,000 year cycle leaving us most exposed to subtle intergalactic cosmic radiation. It's not the end of the world, though if we keep misbehaving it will be our extinction.
Global warming has both human and natural causes compounding arguably to result in Snowball Earth III by mid-century–and the first time since the Great Oxygen Event (2.4 BYA) that the biosphere and physical environment collaborated in such a catastrophe. This is not an over-night event, or a single weather incident we can just ride out. We are talking changes affecting weather dramatically for millions of years. Astro-physical phenomena contribute very subtly to the background radiation subtly changing the energy (Joules) long before we can observe temperature changes. Water and ozone help keep this in check until something dramatic happens, like a threshold (enthalpy) is reached.
With our uncontrolled population growth, we are already straining resources. Uncontrolled economic growth in the form of modern feudalism disguised as free-market capitalism (face it, the banks own everything making the working class glorified slaves/serfs) means hyper-consumerism which is as addictive as any drug, and more deadly than any plague. We can't stop the global warming, but we can control our population and the destruction of our environment so we stand a chance of adapting to the changing conditions. If we don't, this will be the last century humanity walks this Earth. I'm not being dramatic. I'm actually being overly generous because my computations differ from Newton's by only six years–possibly a calendar error, or perhaps two different points of the same set of events. There is a probability that two-billion people will survive this century–and about the same that none will survive. The most likely number is about five-hundred million. They will need to evolve or perish. That is just the way things are.
I nearly forgot the real question my argument poses: Do we want to be in control of our own future, or are we so bent on immediate gain and greed that we'll chose our extinction to "win?"
A wild animal will eat of it's own leg, caught in a trap to get free again, and hobble off....and if that animal gets caught again..they will do it again...Soon they end up eating themselves up, because they can not hunt anymore..or become easy prey for other wild hunters....Weirdest thing you can ever magine seeing...Natural selection has a way of working, in ways we do not notice at first...We are just to dumb to notice it in the fiorst place..
The media focuses on the drama of the storm...the deaths and rescues..and anything that might increase ratings. They avoid reporting on the obvious: Why are we having these freak storms? What could be causing it? What can we do about it? The reporters are a bunch of idiots and we just go along with it.

Real reporting is nearly extinct, certainly not profitable to corporate America, and most definitely not agreeable to the religious right and even many on the left. Why is it so hard for people to accept the truth about global warming? The results are right before their eyes! Glacier National Park needs to be renamed because the glaciers have melted. THERE ARE NO GACIERS ANYMORE. How did that happen in just my short lifetime (58)? Not to mention how it affects us all economically. MY homeowners insurance premium will probably go up now by at least a couple of hundred dollars, which at the moment, I simply can't afford. Hmmmm, I guess it's a 1% v. 99% hing again ...
I'm glad Chad Myers has finally started to come around. Most meteorologists are so undereducated on climatology. Our local guy out here in San Diego John Coleman is particularly depressingly ignorant, and I know Chad has been in the denier camp in the past. Sandy has had a huge effect, then. Let's pray it's enough to overcome the remaining obstructionists!
Piers Morgan, why don't you either declare yourself to be an entertainer, OR act like a journalist? Do not feed Americans more confusion perceptions. We have science, we have data, we have historical weather information. Who cares what congress says. A responsible journalist does not disregard science for the sake of a "attention-getter" topic. We know about climate. Nobody knows about congress.
I wonder how many books and scientific articles have been read by most of the people commenting here. I especially believe that those denying human-caused global warming/climate change prefer to speak without real information, other than Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, and similar cold-hearted sources. Despite Michael Moore's somewhat off-beat appearance, he manages to put his finger right on major issues and speaks out. I admire him for that; if you don't like what he says, but care about the issue, in this case climate change, then read widely and come back to comment afterwards. Just so you know, I have read many books on the topic, and spoken to a number of climate scientists, geologists, and others in similar scientific fields. They all believed the planet is warming, that the situation is dangerous, and that by far the biggest contributor to the overall warming is human activity.

It is a FACT that Science is all about KNOWING and UNDERSTANDING and it has NOTHING to do about beliefs!
You're parsing his language. When a scientist states that he/she "believes" a body of evidence that supports a theory, the semantic connotation of "belief", when used in this context, means that a high level of confidence based on extensive scientific research is given to the theory. I may now have opened the door for you to accuse me of referring to mere "theories", while you may have transcended flimsy theories and have arrived at "truths".
Well, it seems that you are postulating a semantic connotation theory of belief. As a scientist, I always try to avoid stating my "believes"; instead, I simply state that I understand and/or know, AND express my opinions explicitly as SUCH, and NOT as facts.
The fact that I stated about Science is NOT a theory: it is just a fact, nothing less, nothing more.
Most people don't believe in global warming for 1 simple reason. They don't want their energy costs to go up.
Even if it was a proven fact. They would still oppose it, as they don't want to pay extra for teir energy needs.
From 1979 to 2000 the average summer ice volume in the Arctic was 12,000 cubic kilometers. Last summer is was 3,000 cubic kilometers. This is a positive feedback loop we will be unable to stop. Less ice means more sun warmth gets added to the ocean.
Four major aspects drive global temperatures:
– Solar cycle (11 years). Effects are relatively small
– El-Nino/El-Ninja. El Nino means the oceans have hot water on top and the atmosphere heats up. El-Ninja: the colder waters rise to the top. When this happens, the colder waters suck up some of the extra energy in the atmosphere and it dampens the temperature rising in the atmosphere. Temporarily. Until El Nino reappears.
– Excess of greenhouse gases, mainly Carbon Dioxide and Methane (stronger but shorter lasting)
– If a large volcano erupts, it temporarily lowers the atmospheric temperature
Climate change deniers cherry pick dates so the volcano/El Nino/sunspot works in their favor. They have been able to keep that up for a while. Next year, however, El-Nino might return, sun activity will be max. So, unless we get a large volcano erupting, we'll see records on temperature (with storms to match) and low ice volume records in the Arctic.
There is only one solution: drastically reduce our energy consumption. Energy must become far more expensive. I don't see that happening, humans are just not smart enough. So, we're in for a rough ride.

When Mother Nature lays a beatdown on humanity (she's going too...soon), based on the content of most of these comments, about 95% of you are going to deserve it.
The facts are: is global warming happening? Yes. Did it play a major part in this storm? No. Anyone who watched a CNN or Weather Channel meteroligist in the days prior to the storm landing may recall them explaining what was contibuting to the possibility of a "perfect storm" where certain meterological scenarios are in place to create such a storm. In this case we had 1) the tropical hurricane, 2) the jet stream that basically "steered" the storm 3) the massive storm in the north mid-west behind the jet stream pushing to the east that caused the snow events and eventually combined with the hurricane.
Yes...and what caused all those big storms? Duh
Yes! And on top of that, there was the full moon that resulted in a HIGHER tide, thus exacerbating the flooding induced by the winds from the enhanced hurricane.
I've never listened to or had a conversation with a global warming denier who didn't eventually reveal carrying an unwieldy, debilitating burden of hatred. Those who ascribe to the dominant theory of human-caused global warming may want to take heed and avoid falling into the hate trap. I know a seriously overweight denier and my last thought regarding his ideology would be how obese he is, and after reading these irrational posts, I'll be careful to keep it that way.

The weather is changing, but it's not because of man made carbon dioxide emissions. Moore needs to do a little more research. I just can't bring myself to listen to a guy who makes mediocre movies for a living speaking out on science.

Let's interview a bad, bloated film maker about global warming. That makes a lot of sense.
Michael Moore's carcass is polluting the planet more than anything I can imagine. Disgusting! And we should listen to this tub of lard about anything?

What do you yanks expect?!? You gullibles fell for Bush and got the oil, now the price is being paid for the pollution. Yeah.... shoulda went Gore, no?
I find it so frustrating that people boil climate change down to single events. Climate change is not the same as weather. You have to look at all of the relevant factors and chart changes over time. Something like the pattern of hottest Summers on record over the last half century and such are much more relevant factors than single events out of the normal. I wouldn't make light and say that a major blizzard was proof that global warming wasn't happening either, like Sen McConnell joked about a couple of years ago.
There are three reasons for Global Warming:
1) European nations came up with it around 1997 – knowing that their socialist's form of government will cause massive debts across Europe so they 'invented' it as a way to get the rest of the Industrial Nations to pay a tax and the money will go towards paying down their debts. The United Nations are already getting into the "super tax scheme" by proposing taxing Internet providers. Everybody over in Europe is looking for quick tax scams so they can continue global socialism. Former VP Gore was duped and got his prize to make Americans 'think' that global warming is real. It is a real phenomenon but the scam is to take money away from rich countries, like the USA.
2) Global warming is not caused by carbon emissions but by the hundreds of satellites revolving around the Earth – these satellites are causing a 'microwave effects' inside the Earth's atmosphere, raising temperature level.
3) God kept his "remaining treasures' away from the world but because of the 'oil greed' from the Muslim nations and communist nations taking control of the world's resources; God is lifting the remaining natural resources to the free world – warming these areas in the North and South Poles will generate prosperity for his people the next 500 years. God is warming the Earth to prevent evil nations from controlling the world's natural resources.
So let's take action on global warming! ...what action did you have in mind exactly. Should we all go buy a Prius and stop using disposable diapers? Does anyone think that will make one bit of difference? Global warming is a locomotive bigger than we can stop. It makes me really happy to see a few peope on this discussion board mentioning the real problem – global overpopulation. Until you can stop the BRIC nations' populations from growing and aspiring to the American ideal, your Prius and your compost pile are precisely futile. Anyone think they have a good solution to stop overpopulation? Good luck with that.
Short of population control, I find it hard to believe that the future will progress in any direction other than the following: every drop of petroleum that can be sucked out of the earth and every scrap of coal/tar sand/etc. that can burn will be burnt. Eventually, the remaining deposits will be so deep and dirty that renewable energy sources will be cheaper to produce (and probably all energy will be more scarce and much more expensive than it is today). If we all go buy a Prius and purchase eco-friendly bottles, maybe it will take another 5 years to get to the same end point. Yay.
This may sound like a nihilist approach, I guess it is. If you like to spend your time getting worked up over things that you have no control over, I'd suggest you spend a bunch of your time worrying about climate change and what actions we should take to prevent it. Box that glacier... The action you can take, if you live near a warm body of water such as the Atlantic or the Gulf, you can move elsewhere, or you can do what the residents there do already – deal with some hurricanes from time to time. If you really want to solve the global warming problem, forget about the Priuses and the compostable forks, those measures are jokeworthy – do something about overpopulation. If you can solve that one, you'd do a real service to the planet, and humanity. I have no solution to offer you, I don't think you'll get enough consensus from the other 7 billion reproducers.
While so what is correct about overpopulation being a real problem, so what misses some of the real problems, in addition to basically agreeing that global warming is a real problem. Some of the real problems are the contamination and poisoning of the biosphere, our food supplies and medications with as yet unknown detrimental effects on us. Another real problem missed by so what is the fact that we are WASTING AWAY our natural resources. And WE are the MAIN problem!
