Shimon Peres on Iran: "We are trying to prevent the shipping of long range missiles which Iran is sending to Hamas"

On the backdrop of escalating violence in the Middle East, this evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Shimon Peres for an exclusive interview.

Joining Piers Morgan from his home in Jerusalem, the Israeli president suggests that the Palestinian militant group Hamas is being backed by Iran. As such, the host inquires as to what he intends to do about it:

"If you believe Mr. President, that Iran is behind a lot of the Hamas terror activity, as you put it, then what action do you intend to take against Iran?" asks the host.

Staying firm with his position, Peres responds without hesitation:

"Not that I guess so, I know that is the case. And we are not going to make a war with Iran but we are trying to prevent the shipping of long range missiles which Iran is sending to Hamas. And they are urge to Hamas to fire," Peres tells Morgan. "I think that Iran is a little bit disappointed that not only the Israeli army is trying to stop it, but also the Israeli people are behaving with great courage and great understanding."

Continuing his thought, the president of Israel further details what he views as the dangers associated with the country in Western Asia:

"Iran is a problem, world problem. Not only from the point of view of building a nuclear danger, but also from the point of being a center of world terror. They finance, they train, they send arms, they urge, no responsibility, nor any moral consideration. It’s a world problem and you know it."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 for the full interview with the president who insists that Hamas has the power to stop the violence at any point.

"Yes, Pierse! Barack Obama would have gone to the moon if he could have for the past few day. Anywhere but the USA and Middle East. He actually thinks he's smart?? Israel never did trust that idiot, and when the USA re elected him, it was time for Israel to go it alone. They wanted Romney to win the election but it was rigged from the start; so now it's East against West, and wake up!!!"

Piers Morgan is a mouthpiece for Hamas. I really do not understand how a judge on "America's Got Talent" gets the right to even be in the same room with Shimon Peres. Yet here he is telling Mr. Peres that Israel is suffocating the poor little gutsy Palistinians and that if he (Piers) were suffocated like that he would also become a terrorist! Wow that's unbiased journalism, which would make Walter Cronkite proud. Piers, go back to your prior job as head Honcho on the "Daily Mirror" and see if you can make some more Captain Smith" still alive on an iceberg" sightings....

Going into your home and kicking you out by force and taking over your dwelling is not the bad part. What is worse is when the original owners throw rocks at the intruders, these intruders call the cops and press charges. In this country, we shoot the intruder. In Palestine no such rules exist. The victims get shot.
Some complain that Iran supplies Hamas with missiles. How come no one comment that the US supplies Israel with Jet Fighters, Tanks, Missiles, sophisticated Bombs, Drones, etc? Since when Home made missiles scare the mighty Israel?

Could you be any more one sided in interviewing President Peres? Referring to "presumed" Hamas aggression? Almost a thousand missiles over months and an escalation over the week leading to a response should be called what? a neighborly activity? Some sort of reference to what the Israelis are actually experiencing would offer some balance. When the president asked you what alternative anyone else would suggest, you had none beyond saying that what Israel is doing is not helping.
Even when you interview Mr. Mitchell you talk about “how real is the Iran threat” in a way that makes it clear you don’t buy it. I don’t get how you can be so one sided and so blind to reality. Both sides need resolution but you have to see facts and remember that Hamas refuses to sit with Israel and talk.
I used to think you were a good interviewer but when you pretty much come to an issue with your mind made up and seeing one side as evil and the other as poor and helpless, you are missing any possibility to actually sound valid, or someone who has a point.

Why is nobody talking about what started this? Israel soldiers shot a developmentally challenged, unarmed Palestinian on Nov. 5, 2012 near the border. They are under occupation and forced resettlements, which have been deemed illegal under UN law. I am sick of the one-sided nature ot this story.

Actually, Piers, good and fair questions for Peres, including about Israel's real intentions concerning Iran. It's pretty obvious from what Peres said that Israelis are after Iran, more than after Hamas, and will use any excuse, even fabricated to strike at Iran. I was even more appalled by irresponsible anti-Iranian warmongering by George Mitchell, whose Saudi fed anti-Persian conspiracy theories, should have been rebuffed. If any country is manipulating the world towards a full control of the Persian Gulf, it is outdated, fanatic and feudal kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

And Iran are after Israel...along with Hamas, Hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood, Syria, Tunisia, etc. How is it no spokesman will come on & explain why they're still throwing rockets over at Tell Aviv & Jerusalem...while supposedly in truce talks with the Egyptians, I don't believe a word of it I think Egypt are giving out mixed signals & I think Iran is working round the clock to advance their nuclear capability & I believe they could have a nuclear by the first quarter of next year, if not sooner. Also, Syria's Assad is fueling the fire as well and is encouraging Iran to meddle in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so as to take the world off his own backyard war. I also think Egypt is allowing more rockets get through their borders to Hamas while at the same time feigning to talking the peace.

I believe their will be a ground war & I think the whole thing could explode wider afield, because there is no order in the Middle East in the present tense & not even the Brotherhood can stand up to the vehemence of their people on the deaths occurring in Gaza, this could be a make or break time for the Brotherhood & they have to try & figure is this their time or will time figure it out instead badly for their cause. Because if they show weakness, then they will be disgraced for it through the Arab World. It's a catch 22 for them...also with the world in such a state financially war breaking out here could spell disaster for the markets & we (the West) could go headlong in to a "Depression" which would do even more damage worldwide. The more Hamas keep attacking & continuing with rocket fire will surely encourage bigger fish that hate Israel to join in & Iran could even block the "Hormuz Straights" and stop cargo using same. Also, with Iran's economy in a mess re; the sanctions, they wouldn't think twice in worsening things for the rest of us. It's so volatile now, that anything could happen by next week, even all out war. It would be as bad as the Cuban disaster of 62' that confronted Kennedy only it would be much harder to stop the present day madness taking hold, if the beginning of a bigger war shows it's ugly head. If people believe in a God? Pray. If not? then pray anyway. Because prayer may be all we have left to try!

Unfortunately, Israelis can't blame anybody but themselves for being hated in that part of the world. I don't begrudge them wanting to have a homeland, but their treatment of Palestinians consists of ethnic cleansing, apartheid, military bulling and economic warfare. They want to finish off Iran, because this is the only country in the ME, that calls them out on their hypocrisy and cruelty. If they drag us into a war with Iran, God help us all. I would prefer if the Iranian people got rid of the mullahs themselves without ours or Israeli intervention. Enough with all that killing. If Israel is so serious about peace, it needs to lift the blockade of Gaza and stop building new settlements in the West Bank. The 1967 borders should follow. Don't you think?

Mary, you don't know much about the Middle East, Iran or Israel...you say Israel is to blame...but Hamas & the rest have a blatant for Israel not the government but the people, & they'll do anything to cause as much grief as they can in Israel. I mean who has been suicide bus bombings for the last few years in Israel only terrorist sent by Hamas, Fatah, PLO, & all the others.

Now, the people of Iran won't for the foreseeable future lose the grip of the Mullahs because 35/40% of the people there are part of the security forces, the IRG, the Basiji's, the IRIA, Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, & the defence forces, then add in extended family members, & all the security spies among the people to listen to their every word. So you see the people are even in a worse situation than the Syrian people. They are captive & are forever afraid...& who wouldn't be...we know what happened when they rebelled in 2009 after Ahmadinejad stole the election. All the leaders of the Green Revolution were hounded & thrown in Evin Prison for their brave deeds. But I will say one thing, they have their spirit which will never be broken by Khamenei/Ahmadinejad & the feral security forces.

It's easy to blame Iranians for helping Palestinians, when wealthy Arab states washed their hands and distanced themselves from Gaza under pressure from US and Israel. Is Iran responsible for Palestinian plight? No, it is Israel and Arab regimes that are playing a political football with Palestinians.

Everyone bemoans the poverty of those living in Gaza but clearly forgets the fact that Hamas is importing arms and NOT food and medicine from its Muslim brothers. If Hamas were to change its priorities from terrorism to actually caring for the welfare of those in Gaza, the population would be in great shape. It's also criminal that Hamas allows itself to be the mindless puppets of Iran. If they only had a brain!!!

I admire Pers for trying to make the Israelsi accountable for all the killings of Palestinians. As an American journalist that lived in Gaza, I can tell you that Americans, including most news achors have no idea of the conditions that Palestinians have to live in under Israeli occupation. No American would sit passively (sixty years!) and watch their families suffer, be denied human rights and be kept oppressed in refugee camps. Palestinians have spent years not "attacking Israelis". I lived there for three years and there was absolutely not one attacck from Palestinians towards Israelis and NOTHING changed for them. The only country in the world that accepts this Israeli agression is American government. I don't think the general public agrees with this anymore. Hats off to Pers for having an understanding of the situation, much more than any of the anchors I've hrad in the last five days.

A message to all conservatives, which I am, who continuously disavow President Obama for being weak and state that he has never supported our Israeli ally, that they all need to hear this interview over and over again until they all begin to understand that their view of President Obama in this primary foreign policy situation is absolutely wrong.

The statements made by Mr. Peres in this interview were extremely inspirational for the idea that there may actually be a fragment of a chance for peace, that I had conceded long ago as possible. The impassioned direct conversation to not just Palestinians, but to all of their Muslim neighbors, that they wish them prosperity and civil freedoms.

Also, the restraint that Israel has maintained so far to not invade Gaza with ground troops, as Hamas is still launching missiles at Israel needs to be recognized as supportive of the sincerity of Mr. Perez's comments to promote peace, prosperity, and freedom with, and for, their Muslim neighbors.

Hopefully this message from Mr. Peres will strike a rational chord to all Muslims to make this a first step in removing this ridiculous conflict that is the only blockade to peaceful co-existence with the Middle East.

I think its great that Piers Morgan is shining the light on whats going on without being one sided which typically happens in American News. Israel was Palestine. Not only did they take their land but they have oppressed the Palestinians ever since. Its a shame that the Israeli government continues to try to portray the Palestinians as evil. The truth is that they are tired of being oppressed in their own country. Imagine someone invading your home and telling you that this is not your home now but if you want to stay you can live in a small section of your basement. Would you fight back or let them take your home. Then your home invaders tell your neighbors that you are terrorists and evil because you won't accept their invasion of your home. Who's really the terrorist here? It's a shame that the United States of America is supporting the Israelis. It's a shame that people are dying in Gaza and are being branded as evil because they're fighting for their right not to be bullied, abused, oppressed in they're own country any more. Unfortunately we can't go back in time to fix wrongs what is done is done but moving forward Israeli's should come to the table and give back to the Palestinians half the land back and STOP the oppression enough is enough we don't want more bloodshed we don't want another world war.
As citizens of the world we need to stop demonizing people just because they don't agree or bend to our will and stop with the hate we only have one planet earth we need to stop trying to be right and start making right with the world. We are all Gods children we need to act accordingly.

Piers Morgan has had such totally biased reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that it is excruciatingly frustrating to watch. I am not Jewish and I am not interested in advancing the claim of either the Palestinians or Israelis, but I do have a functioning brain. When you take away from this crisis that either (a) one side hates Jews or (b) the other side hates Palestinians you are left with facts and it should be Piers Morgan's job to expose those unbiased facts. His opinionated commentary is characteristically British and European, obviously steeped in culturally deep rooted anti-antisemitism.

Piers Morgan continues to refer back to that the Palestinians have "no hope" and that is the fault of the Israelis? For them to have "hope" assure their conquering neighbors that they are not a threat and will use additional freedom to build a peaceful neighbor rather than a terrorizing force on their borders. Hamas has done nothing of the sort. In all objectivity, Israel withdrew from Gaza and Hamas turned it into a haven for terrorists rather than seizing the moment to build hospitals, schools, teach their children peace and tolerance and build a society peaceful to its neighbors.

Piers Morgan, as a British journalist, would do well to remember that Jews has much less hope under the British occupation of Palestine than do the Palestinians today in Gaza or the West Bank. But what did the Jewish settlers do? They invested in schools, hospitals, built civil society and did not wage war indiscriminately on civilians. Nothing being faced in Gaza today is any less difficult than what the early Jewish settlers faced in founding the modern State of Israel.

If the entire State of Delaware were occupied by a terrorist group, teaching children in their schools to murder Americans, amassing weapons, launching missiles into Maryland and New Jersey, what would we in America do???

I very much wish that Piers Morgan, as a journalist, and CNN as his management, would set aside their biases and to report on objective facts and let people make up their minds for themselves. But are their biases against Jews and Israelis too deep rooted that they are unable to do so?

Please try to expose certain objective facts in this conflict:

Israel voluntarily left the Gaza strip hoping that it would prosper and turn in to a peaceful neighbor.

Hamas turned it into a haven for terrorists. With every opportunity for openness, Hamas exploits this to procure weapons and threaten its neighbor (rather than investing in improving the quality of life for its citizens). It seems logical that Israel has had no choice but to clamp down on this openness or risk allowing a life threatening force to develop along its border.

Hamas deliberately and indiscriminately targets civilians in its attacks. There is no effort made whatsoever to attack legitimate military targets. The missiles do not even have the capability to do so they just fire away at anything and everything.

The Israeli military does not target civilians. Yes, civilians are often injured in war. But the purpose of their action is NOT to target civilians. The difference of these two PURPOSES should be highlighted because it is important. Additionally there is the issue that Hamas deliberately puts its citizens in harms way with no regard for the foreseeable consequences that would of course result by firing missiles from populated civilian areas.

If Hamas simply would stop sending missiles indiscriminately into Israel, this conflict would end. It has been proven, that if Israel gives in to Hamas' demands to increase openness and border crossings, etc, WE KNOW that Hamas would not use this to build schools, or create economic opportunity, or create trade with Israel or other neighbors, provide healthcare. We KNOW that Hamas would simply exploit these opportunities to arm itself to the teeth and threaten all of southern and central Israel. We know this because this is exactly what happened.

Why Piers Morgan, why CNN, do you not expose FACTS as it is such and essential role of respectable serious journalists to do?

What a sad regression from Larry King....

Piers Morgan is doing the right thing...he's exposing the truth not just half truths...its about time that someone pointed out what is the real cause behind this conflict. The media has always been very biased for once we are seeing the other side. Israeli's have painted Palestinians as evil people because they don't want to be oppressed anymore. I wasn't a fan of Piers but I am now he's one of the few in North America who isn't afraid to question Israeli government.
Just because Piers is trying to show BOTH sides does not make him an antisemitic shame on you for saying that. He's being a responsible journalist something many American journalist have forgotten when they talk about this conflict.
Keep up the good work Piers!!

Israel needs to make peace with the Palestinians. Bush II promised a Palestinian state by 2005 and lied. Israaelis need to look to multi-ethnic countries like the United States and Switzerland and create a multi-ethnic country in Israel. Interfaith dialogue and interracial marriage would help end this conflict. The theocracy of Israel is not working. Why are Christians leaving Israel in record numbers ? War will always end in destruction, hatred, disease, horror, and death. Give peace a chance.
