Dianne Feinstein on assault weapons: "They are designed to kill large numbers of people ... I don't believe the Second Amendment covers them"

On the heels of the tragic Newtown, Conn. school shooting which left 28 people dead, this evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" invites Sen. Dianne Feinstein to the program to share her vast insight and strong perspective on the firearm debate.

A long-time advocate for stiffer gun control, the senior senator from California plans to answer Friday's massacre of 20 children with political action:

"I'm going to do an assault weapons piece of legislation, and it's going to be strong, and it's going to be definitive, and it's going to ban – by name – at least a hundred, military style, semi-automatic assault weapons," she tells Piers Morgan. "It's going to ban big clips, drums or strips, of more than 10 bullets."

Admitting to being "very angry" following the unimaginable horror that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Feinstein insists that the right to bear arms is not limitless:

"There's no Second Amendment right to bear every type of weapon that you know of. These are a certain class of weapons – they are designed to kill, large numbers of people, in close combat. I don't believe the Second Amendment covers them. The Second Amendment was written a long time before this class of weapons was founded, merchandised, and spread all over our country, where they fall into the hands of juveniles, grievance killers, people who go into our malls, our theaters, our stores, our businesses, and now our schools, and just kill people for no good reason. It's got to stop."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 as the Chairwoman of the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence further details her reasoning behind being so impassioned to create this newest piece of firearm legislation.

Yes it does Dianna. I tell you what let's have a discussion on restricting the 1st amendment rights of Hollywook in making those movies and programs that glorify gun violence before you restrict my 2nd amendment rights.

When is this country gonna get it right, gun control has to be at the forefront. It is time to stop all this senseless killing. I have written the White House about this and given them a quote from a famous character on Star Trek. Years ago on one of the Star Trek movies, Spock stated and I quote "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one". It is time to realize that there are more people in this country that need gun control to protect us, then there are people in this country that need guns. Guns kill, gun control can save lives, wake up America, wake up, please.

How is an assault weapon ban going to stop all the assault weapons that are already out there? The ammunition they fire has to be banned – far easier and more effective. Also, armed guards have to be in place to help prevent tragedy. If anyone has ever flown internationally, and landed in Germany, they will have noticed the dozens of armed federal police officers (BGS) that are seen everywhere patrolling the airport. They are not just armed with pistols, but with rapid-fire weapons. There has never been an incident at any of these airports.

Your are exactly 100% correct my friend. I too have written to my state representatives and to the president with my suggestion for a new Gun Control Bill ... may Senator Feinstein & President Obama have the power to persevere and defeat the Gun Lobby & NRA who will now, no-doubt, throw out everything they have (and the kitchen sink) to protect the views of those who love guns in our nation.

May those who love people trump those that love guns.

The question you should ask yourself is why an elementry school, movie theatre, or mall? These murderers prey on people that are weak (meaning people who won't fight back). Why don't they attack a police station or a military base? The answer is...THEY HAVE GUNS and more of them. They don't want conflict...and they usually kill themselves before the police get there. Just because you get rid of guns does not mean they will not be accessible. For years drugs have been illegal...has that stopped people from obtaining them. Murderers will find a way.

So if the needs of the many are to kill one person, because it could save many more lives, that makes that killing justified?

Its a nice quote, but it comes from a T.V. show and your needs have nothing to do with mine. Especially when I am a law abiding citizen have committed no crimes, you are advocating that I be punished for crimes I have not committed, and it disturbs me that people don't see anything wrong with that?

        Senator Dianne Feinstein:

I grew up in socialist Hungary before immigrating to the United States in 1978 at the age of 25.

One way to exercise my rights as a United States citizen is to write to my elected representatives about issues that concern.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control under Joseph Stalin. From 1929 to 1953, approximately 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1928, Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, Christians, gypsies, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1935, China established gun control. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents were unable to defend themselves and were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1964, Guatemala established gun control. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1970, Uganda, under Idi Amin, established gun control. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1956, Cambodia established gun control. From 1975 to 1977, one million "educated" people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

It seems like people don’t learn from that past.

We need sale, transfer, importation and manufacturing of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices because "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

This country was founded by violence, and it continues right up until today and likely beyond. The US has been involved in so many violent wars since its inception, and admittedly we would have no history if we had no wars. When we stop building war memorials, will it mean that we have become civilized?

I am sick and tired of the liberal media, piers morgan and his abuse of his guests and individuals like Mac above who choose to live in this great country and soak up all that benefits them while insulting our past. Mr. Morgan constantly beats up his guests that do not agree with his ideology. When did the media become so biased that we can no longer get an Honest view of whats going on. Where are the checks-n-balance for them. You do not have any idea on what you are talking about with gun control and it will not prevent future violence. Do not compare us to your country or Europe as we are a different culture. Please leave if it truly bothers you as we need the room. Your focus needs to change and reflect the lack of mental health laws and services that we are lacking at this time. If you like stats so much, the most difficult patient in an ER to find placement is a mental health patient. Ave stay in an ER is 12-24 hours if not longer. Why don't you research why that is? I have watched your show 4 times and get angry with you each time. You are so abusive to your visitors. Is there an Honest and respectful commentator anymore?

@wells and effie: You're missing the point entirely. My posts went flying right over your heads. Let me draw you a picture: Our countrty was founded on violence, and that violence continues. Founding fathers used the violence to free themselves from England's grip. Their right to do so. However, studying the Revolutionary War in minute detail may surprise you. I am a Vietnam Veteran, and fought with the 25th Infantry Div. between 1968 and 1969, so don't give me any of your sanctimonous garbage. And Effie D. "we will become ciilized only when we stop killing children?" Does that mean killing everyone else is ok and we can be civilized then? Gimme a break!!

Just as I'm in favor of the second amendment, I'm also all for countries like Iran and North Korea having nuclear weapons too, they have a right to defend their homeland against anyone, and if that means shooting us first so be it. More fool us if we don't have enough weapons stockpiled to intercept them and hit them back.

Piers needs to dial it back. If he wants to give a yelling angry speech that is his choice. It is inappropriate to bring on a guest to "interview" and proceed to be disrespectful and insulting to that individual on a personal level without giving them a chance to even answer the questions posed. That is not productive or informative reporting.

I am a mother and a healthcare provider. I have cried along with the rest of America. I also enjoy shooting guns. I grew up with them. I have been educated informally and formally in firearms. People who are disturbed and evil can kill lots of people with or without guns.
The comparison to automobiles and drunk drivers is valid. I have never heard any suggestion that people be deprived of their cars – or limited in which cars they can own. I would be interested in the statistics of how many people are killed by drunk drivers vs those killed by killing sprees of automatic weilding individuals. That said I fully support background checks and responsible gun ownership – including instructional classes. I also oppose gun show sales.

I live two towns away from Newtown. My heart goes out to all the families affected by that ill individual. But I agree with you Kay. Very rude to invite the man on the show and rip him like that. He was absolutely correct in saying that the media and the ridiculous awful insensitive questions some of these reporters ask and the lack of valid information that they have been reporting is irresponsible. Asking the medical examiner about how many times each were shot. Was it at close range? No one needs to know that. Did they suffer. Really. . Asking that?? Then asking him what were they wearing?? Are you kidding me. Do you think that's responsible reporting??? I do think people have to be responsible in their gun ownership and keep them locked up. I also believe in background checks. I don't beliece there should be bans on guns because they are already out there. If there are bans put in place the law abiding citizens. Will abide by the law and the only ones with those guns will be the criminals.

The comparison of guns with cars is cowardly. People do not drive cars inside movie theaters, churches, schools, shopping malls, colleges and etc. Cars are almost a necessity whereas guns are only a necessity for protection against those with guns.

Nothing kills easier than a automatic assault weapon. To compare guns with cars I think is really redicilous.

Comparing cars to guns is not a valid argument. Do people die in automobile accidents at the hands of people who are impaired? Unfortunately, that answer is yes. Cars are not made to kill; cars were made for transportation, but that is not the issue at-hand at the present. Why, I ask, are guns made? Answers vary depending on who is responding, but some say guns are for protection, while others may say they are for hunting/sport. Please understand that I am not opposed to the 2nd Amendment, however, the real purpose for any gun is to kill, why else would gun safety instructors teach not to point a gun at anything that you wouldn't be willing to kill? I do not hold the belief that people need assault weapons nor do I believe that people should be allowed to purchase drums/magazines for assault weapons. How many more mass shootings must occur before America wakes up?

With regards to the comments about Piers Morgan, I felt a bit uncomfortable with his approach during one of his recent interviews. However, at least he is among those showing passion about protecting the 'many'.

Such comparison is utterly wrong simply because a drunk driver does not intent to kill his victim. The killer at sandy hook dressed to kill maximum number of people. How how can you possibility say such comparison is valid. Pierce was showing his emotion something that old gun loving guy obviously lacked! It is time to translate anger into action and defeat gun lovers and the gun lobby

Kay, thank you so much. I couldn't agree with you more. Morgan only wants to PUSH his one-sided agenda and will not allow an honest response which may influence another to have a though different than his own. I ask this, why are the liberals so forcefully pushing their agenda while others are still mourning the loss of their loved ones and while many are full of anger? Aren't we taught to wait till we have a "cool head" before acting and verbalizing our thoughts? There are so many issues that are ignored which will have a bigger impact if addressed, on the amount of violence which you and I see on a daily basis in the healthcare field. Lastly, I agree that responsible gun ownership should be pushed which includes locking up your guns in your home. They should not be lying around in a home of an unstable individual?

But, Piers Morgan is wrong again!
      Facts: Shame on CNN!
The worse mass murder in the U.S. in recent years was by Timothy James McVeigh whom killed 168 people with a bomb in a Ryder Truck. (NO Assault Rifle)
The 2nd was Cho Seung-Hui who killed 32 at Virginia Tech with two hand guns (NO Assault Rifle)
Then of course we have the Muslim extremist at Fort Hood who killed 13 U. S. soldiers and wounded 30 with a hand gun. (NO Assault Rifle)

He brought Australia up tonight, well they are sorry they banned the guns they banned because, the gangs and thugs took over without a fight. This is also out there if you look it up and don't listen to this non-American. (I wonder if the Mexican cartels and inner city street gangs, would run ramped if ALL guns were banned. The cartels can ship 1 million tons of drugs across our borders every year and we can't stop it. I wonder how much money the cartels would make off gun running, enough to buy more politicians? Enough money does corrupt all)

The point here is, Pier is a tabloid journalist who would use any tragedy in America to get on the news band wagon of military weapons and anti-gun debates so he can get paid more next year. And of course get more air time to preach his British views and call all Americans who believe in our 2nd Amendment idiots. And he comes from a country that believes in taxing the poor and giving it to the rich (Royal Family). Talk about living in an out dated country! (We kicked his fellow Britain's out of America 200 plus years ago because we don't want your dictatorship or personnel views in our house anymore!) Hasn't his work visa expired? I'm sure there is an American out of work that could do and would take his job here in America.

      Diane Feinstein:
FACTS: Here is a career politician worth over $100,000 million, been fined $190,000. for failure to properly report campaign contributions and expenditures, which means she lies and distorts truths like all politicians. She is from a state that she helped get all guns regulated, has the 10 round magazine law, that she brags about, to be from a state with the best gun laws and regulations in the U.S.A., but has more GUN MURDERS than any state in America. Yea, that works well! (Of course it's because there are more people, ha!) She has been in the Senate 20 years and going for 26 and done nothing to fix America's issues. She is also from a state who CUT its mental health programs like all states and the Federal Government.

The issue is helping the mentally ill and the depression and alignated people of America. She and the rest of the elected Government officials won't talk about that today because they are the cause! It's not the Ryder Truck company's fault or the gun makers. It's we the people that have elected the non-truth, word twisting, power hungry and wealth driven politician, all at the expense of the American people. Maybe if we would of used the Government bailout (our tax dollar) on the American worker and mental health programs instead of our politicians giving it buddy bankers, their family and friends, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Don't believe these BS'ers and get the facts for yourself!

Amen to Steve and Scott. Well said. I too hate watching CNN. I long for non-biased true reporting. How else can America learn whats really going on? I am sick of hearing about the rights of a few out weigh the needs of the many. The rights they are talking about are their rights too! If there were so few, then we wouldn't be talking about this anymore as those rights would have already been trampled. There are more gun owners than The many realize. Let's address the real issues. Why wasn't there a plan in place for these types of events, since its so common. I mean we have fire evacuation plans, routes and inspectors. Can't we have the same for these types of events? Wouldn't leaving the building be safer than hiding in the corner of the room? I don't mean to sound insensitive but these are real questions that needs answers to prevent such horrific events. Gun control will not eliminate the 200 million guns out there. So lets get proactive in addressing things we can change immediately. Homeland Security has representatives in most towns in my state. Can't they inspect these plans much like a fire Marshall does with fire prevention plans? Then put more money into Mental Health with public education/awareness to recognize the warning signs of depression and aggression. These things along with tighter regulations on gun ownership would decrease these types of nightmares. But don't hold your breath cause people like Mr. Morgan won't let you throw out any ideas for discussion as he is too busy pushing his agenda and abusing his guests. BOOOO and shame on your Mr. Morgan. This one paragraph along with Marine Scott above has been more meaningful than the last 4 shows of your that I watched. LOL

        Steve – if these guns hadn't been sold in the first place, how many of those 20 kids would be alive today; every country has their share of deviants, but, based on a per capita basis, the USA has 45 times the number of deaths from firearms, almost 200x the deaths/injuries as the next country in the developed world; something has to change;

No law abiding citizen will be affected... right.

Except for the fact that you have now DISARMED ME. As a law-abiding citizen, I would be unable to defend myself, my loved ones, or my property. And any non-lawful influence would know it. I now have to rely on an already overtaxed, and in many cases extremely corrupt, government police force. How many minutes until they get to me? Five? Ten? In that time, any amount of horrible things that someone could wish to do to another human being could happen.

Now. Different scenario. How long does it take me, same situation, to grab my Simonov, load it, charge it, and be ready for an agressor? In my home? 20 seconds, tops. That's including retrieving it and its ammo. From there, I have 10 rounds of 7.62x39mm ready and waiting, with a steel-backed oak stock as a backup. I'm thinking the situation has tilted somewhat in my favor.

Mr morgan, if you are afraid to remain in The United States Of America then leave, Guns don't kill people, people do!! I feel bad for the victims and thier families but you are the problem not the solution. Every gun is an assault gun, that is what they are for,,,my gun has killed less people than Kennedys car...background checks are in full effect and work. Mentally unstable persons should be put away and this would not have happened. Stop spouting your pathetic retoric.

You really don't know what you're talking about, do you?

Ok, I'll address your thoughts in something of a reverse order.
        1. Grenade launchers, rocket launchers, and other military explosives already exist on the street, in limited amounts, in criminal hands. They are not seen or used often, for a variety of reasons:
        A. The ammunition for these weapons is prohibitively expensive on the black market.
        B. They draw far too much attention, much more than just law enforcement.
        C. The vast majority have a minimum arming distance, which is prohibitive for any sort of close quarter combat.
Why would you use a rocket launcher or grenade launcher against a non-entrenched opposing force? You would be much better off utilizing a submachine gun, light machine gun, or assault rifle, which are already commonly used by criminal elements.

        2. Why would a citizen need automatic weapons? Any situation with multiple aggressors (I.E. 3 or more). Ever seen a riot break off through a residential neighborhood? Ever seen video of a "Flash Rob?" Heck, people still get lynched. These situations occur more often than you imagine.

Go out shooting sometime. Find someone who knows what they are doing, and go out shooting with them. Try a variety of firearms; learn the proper care and feeding of at least one. You will understand far better the right that we are trying to protect.

Pepe, it doesn't stop. People having been killing eachother since before recorded history. It's not likely to stop after a weapons ban. You have your opinion and are free to act on it. But understand others do not feel the same way, and you don't have the right to take away their means of protecting themselves.

'A well-regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The exact wording of the second amendment, written at the time when the American Armed Forces were a militia. It is one sentence, not two so it would seem to me that the two items, a militia, and the right to bear arms are not separate. The US now has arguably the most powerful armed forces in the world which would seem to obviate the requirement for a militia (read the reserves these days) as the sole line of defence for the country. So why does the country need an armed population?.
The Supreme Court has ruled that the right to have a hand gun in one's home is a reasonable interprettion of the right to bear arms, and no one will argue the right to have weapons for hunting (altho that is more sport these days than necessity).
Police and members of the armed forces, all of whom need to be armed, are subject to stringent weapon control, and face severe penalties for their mis-use or loss. Why should the general population be exempt from the same rules?.

Bottom line, it is a sad commentary on the state of a society when everyone feels they need to be armed to "protect themselves and their loved ones". Perhaps if there were more controls, the need to carry a gun to protect oneself would diminish if not disappear. Unless and until the culture which currently exists around guns in the US is changed, I fear the type of horrific situation just seen in Newtown WILL happen again.

Peter, it will happen again and obviously you have never needed the police. One day, when you do, you will see they don't beam into the scene. It will seem like an eternity before they get there. I'm glad I had my gun which saved my life and not a knife like the other guy. Gun control will not eliminate this threat. Education of the public, money in mental health services, and a decrease in violence on the movie screen and video games will all turn this around. Lets get real and work on solving the problem. The media will not allow this to happen because its against their liberal agenda

This is more toward beau and others then you peter c ant we come up with a compromise...i like what pepe was saying...why not just have strict laws on owning a gun..if you are a law abiding citizen then it shouldnt affect you whatsoever....what about a psych evaluation to obtain a weapon or have a gun licence to be certain...i realize nothing is perfect...ppl obtain weapons illegally all the time but it is a deterrant for some criminals...also what about better mental health services...for some reason there is more mentally unstable ppl then there ever was...we need to start something to make mental health services affordable for ppl so they can stay on the meds that help him...or programs to keep them off the street and out of schools, etc with weapons...something needs to change....atleast ppl are making an effort to discuss a solution...dont just defend your gun...come up with helpful solutions as to what you think the country needs to stop the next shooting.....

I think the logical extension of this argument is that every American after the age of 14 and every adult tourist is issued with a sub machine gun and ammo. Combine this with 1 hour per day video game playing shoot em up – like attack of the zombies to sharpen up the reflexes. Of course every 6 months people will be psychologically tested, so we can lock away the crazies. This way we would totally eliminate all gun crime and homicide. Everyone would be too afraid to leave their homes.

Compromise: let the guns look anyway you want but change the law to only allow weapons that require the following legal: no more than five rounds, all weapons must require the manual advance of a round into a chamber by the operator, without mechanical assistance,, where the chamber must fully retract manually and chamber the round manually. Finally, magazines should be fixed and all rounds top loaded through the breach. This definition would allow people to own weapons but ensure mass murders are reduced as the operator would actually need to know how to use the weapon.

There is NO need for the weapons used in many mass murders to be owned by civilians!

It seems to me that possession of a gun should require the successful completion of a permitting process that includes a bacdkground check and a psychological inventory. Should the inventory indicate a possible problem, the individual should then have to be examined by a board of three mental health professionals that would have to vote 2-1 in order to approve or deny a permit. Importantly, the clearance process should be extended to every member of a household and nor to just the person who desires the weapon. Any individual who intends to move into a household that already is permitted should also be reqired to go through the process. Failure of the potential resident to pass the process should require either that the individual not take up residence or that the weapons be removed to an approved situation. Permits should have to be renewed each year. This should assist in dealing with problems such as the one at hand which involved a disturbed person having access to guns legally acquired by the person he was living with. Granted, this will not end gun violence in America. Mitigation, though, is not top be disparaged. No law is 100% effective. That does not mean that laws should be abandoned.

The problem is that once the gun is out there it does not matter how strict the screening and background check process was. Nobody can guarantee that only the people that passed that process would have access to that gun.

From what I have heard, the guns used in this crime were obtained legally and the owner killed. How does all the gun control in the world prevent this? We are a nation that swallows camels and strains gnats. The killer could have used any one of the guns he had in his possession to commit the crime. While we are in the banning mood lets ban cars and drunk drivers (drunk drivers killed ~211 children in 2010), abortion (55,000,000 dead, all soon to be children) and since we are doing so much good for our society lets ban knives and forks because kids are overweight. We have had guns in this country since it inception, the question is why do we have this problem now? Is it because as a society we have thrown God and his church to the side and embraced humanism?

When people try to say its the same as the military they are wrong. the military one has a burst selection and higher power ammo. Also even with the recent shooting being an annomally. Thsi weapon was never desinged for rapid fire hence why they dont have auto any more in the military. and i would agree that for owner safety they shouldnt allow 30 to 100 round mags they are unsafe for the opperator

Gary, I'll take one bombing every 20 years versus the madness of gun violence every day. As for your argument about people will find other ways to commit violence, your right. But that's not how we deal with issues in the world. We address them as they fall on our plate. 911 ring a bell? Weren't prepared, now we're better prepared. Shoe bomber ring a bell? Weren't prepared, now everybody has to get down to bare skin. My point is to say we don't not do nothing to fix a problem in fear of a possible alternative method for violence. Myspace didn't know facebook was comin'. Facebook didn't know twitter was comin'. You do what works in your time period. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO the bulls**t 2nd Amendment worked. BUT NOW in 2012, probably not a good idea to live by a piece of legislation made by slave owning, woman oppressing, bad wig wearing, non inclusive all white males. You think?

@freshyoungminds, you're right! We shouldn't hold onto any legislation from 250 years ago. Now shut up and start praying to the God of the Government, because you really shouldn't be following such a mindset that you have freedom of speech or of religion. That's 250 years old! Now, you don't get to sleep in your bed tonight, because there are government soldiers who have taken over your house for use as a barracks. Hey! One of them found your illegal poetry. Good thing they were there to see it, seize it, and arrest you for your contraband. They figure all you poetry-type people always have poetry-type friends, so they take turns setting parts of you on fire, and peeing you out. Finally, when you finally crack and give them your co-workers name just to stop the pain, they take you there, drag them out of the house, declare them guilty, and shoot them in the head. They then resume setting you on fire.

But surely someone will stop this! Someone, anyone! Why did no one tell you that your rights are only sacred as long as you can keep them? No one told you the only way to keep them was by the threat or use of force!

End narrative. A final note. Remember that your nation, your government, in the past 50 years, has opened fire on U.S. citizens multiple times. Remember the blacklisting of the McCarthy era, of government gone mad with power. Remember the United States citizen who (although he had terrorist connections) was executed without trial by the U.S. government. Never, ever think that a scenario like the one I described can't happen here. And yes, 300,000,000 privately owned firearms can and will make a difference in such a scenario.

No more guns on the streets of America. Only a member of the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Special Forces and Security Personnel will have and carry a gun

The United States of America is no longer the 18th Century militia nation. The United States is now a 21st Century nation of peace, love, honor, innovation, leadership, liberty and freedom

An American citizen will qualify to buy a gun for hunting purposes only at the age of 45 years after being fully vetted mentally, psychologically and socially supported by a recommendation

Maybe its time to reinstiute religion back into schools, since when a tragedy like this occurs, where is the first place ameircans turn? Lets begin fixing the root of our problems versus blaming the gun makers.

      That sounds familiar....

Oh, neat, he's got a plan for the economy! We're gonna build... war machines? That's odd. Ah well, the military knows what it's doing. Ooh, he's going fire and brimstone now, yeah! There's a problem with the economy? No $#!*, Sherlock. It's who? The Je ws? Ok, that was a little unexpected. Umm... What's a Final Solution? And why is everyone raising their hand...? Why are you giving me this star...?"

I live in Ontario Canada and I am just sick of what happen to those little children, I have 4 grandchildren and cannot imagin anything like that happening to them. I agree with Piers all guns and I mean all guns should be turned in. There is no need for anyone to have a gun in their home. Only the ploice or military should be allowed to have them. If you have rage against your neighbour, friend, a family member or a stranger use your FISTS. not guns. maybe the worls would be a much safer place.

That 98.5% chance you might have to use that weapon of yours isn't worth the everyday violence that occurs. Let's stop all gun sells to regular civilians and do massive "funds for guns" pushes country wide to get guns out of the hands of criminals and violence will inevitably go down. Criminals need money more than they need guns.

Pierce, you are obviously not an American, and your reporting is biased. I have never seen such an unprofessional interview as I just saw with the man that is for freedom to own a gun. You are out of control and I thought you were going to go off and kill someone. It is that anger that is a cause of all these problems. Anger you are spreading.

I'm trying to figure out why his mother felt it normal for 'her' to purchase these types of guns. I also believe she had other guns in her home. My question is how do we get these guns out of the bad guys hands while being able to realistically protect own homes and families. My heart breaks for those who have lost their babies and loved ones. Our prayers are with them.

That has been my question. Why did she have these types of guns to start with??? My 27 year old would say: Just because she can! That to me would be the dumbest, most ignorant answer, but I would bet that's the best answer one would say.

"My question is how do we get these guns out of the bad guys hands while being able to realistically protect own homes and families." AHA, I thought you'd never ask. SO HERE"S MY PLAN TO RID AMERICA OF GUNS (the short version). It's a 5 part plan. Part 1. Simply stop all sales of guns in America. This can be announced a year in advance to give gun shops and sellers time to evaluate and find a new source of income. Hell, we may even set up some kind of severance or somethin' that provides some kind of consolation for the year following. But what about the people that are just going to go buy guns in bulk like it's a nuclear war comin'? Now the announcement of "guns will no longer be sold in America" can only be said with the following information to coincide with it. Which leads me to part 2. Part 2. Announce that fines, IRS, tax, etc, some kind of penalty will be given if all registered guns by legal owners aren't turned in within 5 years. This leads me to part 3. Part 3. We do a "funds for guns" no questions asked country wide. Criminals, crackheads, and the poverty stricken want money more than guns. So what this does is it hopefully keeps guns in the hands of the people who have rightfully purchased weapons a little bit longer because they probably don't need money the same way as the average street criminal and THAT is the initial intent of this plan. To rid the guns from thugs first, thus allowing legal gun owners the relaxation of handing over their own guns later on. We have to be able to prove that crime is down before America kisses that good ole 2nd Amendment goodbye. "Funds for guns" will obviously be available for the rightful gun owners but they probably won't be willing to turn theirs in until year 4 or 5 when gun violence is down. And yes I do know that they've done "funds for guns" in different cities but never on a massive scale like this. Part 4. New law. Unregistered gun owners, aka criminals, only get 1 year to turn in your weapon for money. After 1 year any person caught with an unregistered firearm gets 5 years imprisonment no questions asked. Hey, they do it with 3 strikes or with felons caught with weapons. It's go hard or go home at this point. We have to show the country we mean business. So yes, an automatic 5 years if you get pulled over or caught with an illegal firearm NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I'm not against an automatic 10 to be honest but I'm trying to have a heart. Again, the whole purpose is to first rid the streets of guns out of the hands of the people who absolutely should not have them, BUT the long term plan is to make sure that eventually nobody has one. But those that are law biding citizens and have legally purchased guns should not be treated the same as criminals, thus the reason for a fine versus jail time if you still hold on to your weapon. Drumroll. Part 5. None of this can exist if we don't also take extra measures at the borders and with any shipments coming into America. This is the part of the plan my girlfriend always says "If they don't get them in America they'll just start bringing them in from Mexico". Now I'd like to think that an automatic 5 years is the deterrent for not trying to get your hands on illegal weapons. But none the less, we have to tighten up our borders. Now ALL OF THIS is just the meat and potatoes of the plan. I realize that "certain" individuals need weapons for farms, wild animal areas, etc. and should be the exception. There are many minor stipulations that can be put in but this is my over all plan as a whole. If anybody agrees, disagrees, supports fully, or sees loopholes, please let me know. Aww yeah, there is a part 6. Part 6. Tracking and microchipping people. Then you gun lovers can keep your toys and the government will just know every single step you take. Hell, they already track us with cellphones, GPS, credit cards, black boxes, etc. Again, I say go hard or go home. But I digress. Different conversation for another time. But let me know what you think about my 5 part plan.

My heart goes out to all the parents of these innocent children and to the teacher's families who tried to protect them. I am a Canadian too, it scares me that every year many Americans are stopped at our border and their guns are seized if they want entry. They deny they have them in their cars or motorhomes. What about the ones our border patrol people miss?. It is so sad to see this happen time and time again and no action taken. I feel safe on our streets in Canada – I don't know that you would be able to say the same walking down the streets in the USA.

This is a horrible tragedy that would have happened no matter what gun control laws were in place. This show is a very clear depiction on just how Liberally-biased this news station is. I don't even believe that there are any firm details to state that the killer actually used the .223, as he carried two other weapons. Right now, I think people need to take time to grieve and then settle down and have a logical conversation about guns. Above all, Piers needs to stay off of his personal agenda and conduct a professional, unbiased interview.

"Having a logical discussion about Guns" only works if the end result is a Bill or other legislation whose end result will protect the innocent of this nation from gun violence .... the status quo is no longer acceptable.

We know what the status quo means: next year, or the year after, or the year after that we are doomed to repeat the lessons of Columbine, Newtown, Aurora, VA tech ... how many innocent dead students does it take before we finally learn this lesson?

After watching Piers Morgan tonight, I can say it will be the last time. If you listen carefully to the way Mr Morgan asked his guest, Phillip Van Cleave about his comments to an interview he gave about firearms, it was clear Mr Morgan was simply using Mr Van Cleave as a piñata to take out his hatred on. This is absolutely disgusting. Mr Van Cleave was a Deputy Sheriff. This is no way to treat someone who has served his community.

Yes, we are all heartbroken by what happened in Connecticut. I personally welcome a real conversation about firearms in the US. But it should be no surprise that anyone who supports gun ownership will not believe that this conversation will actually happen given the way Mr Morgan treated his "guest".

Piers you should be ashamed of yourself – exploiting this tragedy to push your agenda! You are playing into people's emotions and feelings to remove their rational thinking! Guns are not the problem. 911 had nothing to do with guns – that took out more people than any event in recent history. The terrorist attacks prove that guns are not necessary to achieve the same kind of terror. Go ahead – disarm the nation and the next super genius kid with social disorders will simply build a bomb instead of using a gun. You interviewed that guy and kept saying that gun rights activists are the problem – he pointed out he worked in law enforcement unlike you Piers Morgan. I was appalled how you railroaded through him on national TV and implied he did not care about those children. You became very agressive and unprofessional and as a so called journalist and TV personality you should maintained your composure no matter what your views are, I don't tune into CNN to know what Piers Morgans deep personal feelings are – frankly I could care less – what I expect from a so called network is high level reporting that is neutral and not tainted with your anti-gun agenda. Any dim witted twit knows that people kill people and gun laws only work for the LAW ABIDING. I am done watching your mug on TV and you will never fill one of Larry's shoes. I cannot believe people can come up and say semi automatic weapons are like farraris and since they bring joy to life, they should never be taken away as it will be against freedom, and no gun enthusiastic should be punished by a single maniac's action. The issue is not guns.
The issue is mental illlness and lack of proper resources.
It is know this man was unstable. It is known he had a history ( one can only wonder why his mother kept guns in the house ).
State and Federal government need to be called to task for closing State and Federal Mental Hospitals in the 1980's.
Families have no options. The police won't do anything until after a tragic and preventable disaster.
Hospitals won't hold them more than the few days allowed, and aren't equipped for this long term problem.

The Founding Fathers gave the right to bear arms for very good reasons. Read your history.

What would Mr Morgan have to say if Adam Lanza had taken his mother's car and run over 20 children waiting at a buss stop? He is upset with the way that we do things in the US, he needs to head back to the UK. Banning a certain class of weapon means that the criminals will have a semi-automatic weapon to commit their crimes and the everyday American will not have an equal weapon to defend themselves. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bare firearms. It does not discriminate against any particular type and it is not the governments job to do that. This country needs to provide better support to families who have mentally disturbed members. The law enforcement's hands are tied to help a parent when they fear their child, spouse, or sibling. They have to wait until the person has committed a crime. The schools need to allow God back into the classroom so kindness and tolerance can be taught.

Australia may not have had another school shooting but their crime rate has continued to increase since their gun control laws have changed.

All the discussion about the crime rate associated with banning weapons missed the point, it's means of doing massive damage we're allowing. We'll always have dark sides in our nature, as human, but we can do our best to prevent tragedy. Once again, with all due respect Pat, put yourself in Nancy Lanza's shoes, hope you'll understand.

Assuming gun control is put in place, there are 300 Million guns in circulation. How soon do we expect the restriction to have any sensible effect on these murders.
Is gun control alone going to solve the problem...I don't think so

Thank you Piers for taking to task the people defending guns with no restrictions. We have laws for the "greater good"(such as car insurance, seat belts, licenses to drive), but allow gun owners unlimited access to all types of guns and ammunition with no regulation or background checks?? This country restricts how much Sudafed you can buy at Walmart, but does not limit how much ammo you can buy???

As a retired military member I can't see why a civilian would need and assault rifle, semi-auto high powered hand guns, or a stock pile of ammo! There is not self-defense situation that would require you to fire 100 rounds-ever! These weapons are for military use to kill in large numbers and that's it, they have no other use!

Piers you are incredibly pompous as a Brit to come here and dictate amendment rights to Americans. We threw your country out a long time ago for that very thing. But wait, it is clear we are still a part of the Empire, as our former President went and bowed to her "Majesty". In light of the fact that this is a horrible tragedy and a compassionate person naturally feels sorry for both the dead and their families, it does not include all Americans. The 2nd Amendment is there to protect us from all forms of tyranny. The Senator's remarks about its contextualization are spurious. I see the Bill of Rights as progressive, not outdated. No one person has the right to change it according to their predilections or ideas. We are a Democracy. This is why we elect Congressman. Please discontinue the argument that guns kill people. People kill people and if they are crazy enough, theyll find a way. It is a fact of life and if we get to the deeper issue, we need to confront our own hypocrisy first. I respect peoples rights to hold fire arms and lets not forget what the old man in Florida did in the internet cafe. He was carrying a firearm and for that he saved a lot of lives. Further, what about the 176 Pakistani children killed by US Drones? I do not see the President shedding a tear for them.

Do we need stricker gun control? Yes. Is that the answers to all of our problems? No. If a crazy person wants to cause harm, they don't need a gun to do it. The problem isn't the gun. The problem is the sick person pulling the trigger. We need to be more careful of what the young people in our society are putting into their heads. We need to stop promoting violence as an acceptable form of entertainment. If we don't want our kids to think violence is fun, then why are there so many violent video games? We need to get violence out of our video games and taken off our televisions. If you are looking for violent ideas, you needn't look any further than the television set in your livingroom.

Piers, I applaud you on this issue & the way you're showing up Van Cleave is spectacular; he is blaming everything & everyone for this obscene act except those that are really responsible like the organization he represents....& I also think he thinks he's Van Cleave of the Spaghetti Westerns where you shoot people and they all get up at the end of the movie & live on to star in the next one. Don't give up on this Piers, & could I suggest you get some of the big names you get on your show to start a campaign against these killer automatics...that do most of the damage/hurt/death, to people throughout the US every year!

Those children who have survived will be suffering for maybe the rest of their lives; & they too have lost their childhood's last Friday by the sights & sounds they have seen & heard. It"s so sad & it should be everyone's role even to go as far as marching to your Legislature's & march till they stop this pure madness of allowing weapons like this to be bought & used freely without a thought of the damage they have done & will do in the future, in the country that is supposed to be the most democratic country in the world, if this is not addressed to properly. Children don't seem to have any rights when it comes to guns & automatic weapons, they don't understand the childishness of the adults who have to still be playing Cowboys & Indians as adults, but with real "Lethal Weapons. I was even told you can buy the bullets for these & all guns/rifles in the supermarkets there – with a ease like if you were buying sweets. The NRA especially should be ashamed of themselves, & should be held responsible for all future deaths from automatic weapons, seeing that they still think guns are "Toys"!!!!

Wait a minute, I just heard a Ferrari comparison in sport vehicle to assault rifles? Seriously Philip? People who entertains themselves with skiing, and the worse that could have happened to them is hit a tree and die (with all due respect to those tragedies happened in 2012); people who entertain themselves with Ferrari or a Lambo at most destroy a couple of million dollar metals and gave their lives being irresponsible (and please remember, those tho can afford these entertainments are rich and most likely not insane; People who you, van Cleave, think you're protecting the rights for, play with killing tools designed to satisfy one of the dark side of human nature, violence. And history proves the evil and unspeakable horrors that this "entertainment" is capable to bring to our wonderful society.

Guns are "fun" seriously? In the 50s you were playing with hunting rifles. Now the media and games made available to our teenagers and even 5-6 year-old (you shouldn't be surprised) are teaching them the power and the "fun" of automatic weapons. Don't believe me? ask your 10-year-old young boy what's a "head shot". Trust me he knows. I've been watching this tragedy unfolding from the first day, I'm just amazed why in the wonderful America, we still can't get our head straight and still discuss gun control.... Do we not have enough proof, evidence or sacrifice? or What the heck are we hesitating for? Money made off of selling guns?

And how disgusting that you are gonna use the topic of gun control to pad yuor ratings, you should be ashamed of your self Mr. Morgan. I am a father of two wonderful boys, the same age of those poor children in Newtown and I could not imagine what the families must be feeling right now. But in no way am I shielding my children about firearms. I guess you media folks like sitting on your little soap boxes and do what ever you can to tell it the way you want it heard. I guess bullets just jump out of these weapons for no reason. Be realistic Mr. Morgan, had somebody been armed in Aurora, Newtown, ect., the story would have certainly had a little bit of a different outcome. And in case you are wondering, I am a proud owner of SEVERAL!!!!!! firearms.......and yes one of them is in fact an AR-15.

I have listened to Mr. Piers Morgan long enough criticize our country. The problem at hand with the mass shooting is very complicated and covers several issues in addition to gun control. Mental illness and TV/Media violence, to name a few...I do not hear Mr. Morgan going after Hollywood or exploring the difficult topics of Mental Health as they relate to the shootings. But to listen to Mr. Morgan criticize our country and use this issues to push his agenda ( gun Control) on the American people is offensive at best. It would be one thing if he conducted unbiased interviews that discussed and identified the issues we need to deal with and address to make America a better place, but when it is obvious that he is openly attacking the single issue of gun control and repeatedly attacking our 2nd amendment rights, it becomes unacceptable. Stop telling me how great the British Empire is... if it is that great move on back there! Why is CNN standing by and letting him denigrate our system. I do not own a gun and never have owned a gun. I am not for ownership of semi automatic weapons. I am for open dialog on the issues that will stimulate conversations and potentially identify solutions. But bashing anyone for gun rights is counterproductive. And telling us every 5 minutes about how fantastic and smart the British people are, is a slap in the face....

Shame on you CNN for letting Mr. Morgan go on like this. I hope the short term ratings are worth the loss of moral convictions for your network......At least Larry King appeared to be more objective and sensitive to the issues.

Open your eyes, you are all focusing on the wrong things, based on emotional reactions. Newtown had a ban on these weapons, the weapon was still there. The problem is, as Sanjay Gupta said "every shooter in a mass shooting has been on a Prescribed Psychtrophic drug or an Antidepressant " and now 1 in 5 kids have a mental illness. To only blame it on the gun is wrong there more components to this problem. The biggest component and keeps being over looked is the medications , when the drug has a black box warning may cause hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts, there is a problem with the drug. Piers needs focus on this but no one will because the pharmacetical companies have to much power. Piers needs to go home.

One example of this is the anrea Yates story she was having hallusinations thought the devil was corupting her children. they released her even tough she was saying she needed to send her children to heaven. she went home waited till the next day and drowned her children. I agree with the part that their is no reason why anyone needs to own a assault rifle for personal reasons. I have been in law enforcement for 23 years, 20 of those for a college. We are out gunned and out man'd. Budget cuts are killing us and our department is the first to suffer (we need a pretty campus first ). We have one assault rifle for a campus of 3000 students and 600 employees. We train and are expected to go into a active shooter incident with one rifle and 2 officers on shift ( we usually only have 2 per shift ). Yes we carry handguns on us. Assault rifles are used for one thing, to kill quickly, effectively, and in mass, they should only remain in the hands of law enforcement and military. The gentleman who said people own them because it's fun to shoot one, REALLY !!!

is youre assault rifle police grade? if so you use a more powerful weapon than the cilvilian model. If not you should be trained on the proper use of even that. is it 5.56 or larger cal. A 5.56 should never i repeat never use a high capasity more than 20 rounds. And for youre safty should never be used in rapid fire. Thats just how they where designed in fact this is so because the mil ploice versoins do not have automatic select changed to 3 round burst

& Al? Would you go around drink-driving? Yes, drivers who drive around drunk are using their cars as if they were guns...because they could kill someone. The sentences should be very heavy fines & long term prison for drunk driving. We can't control all the people who go for a drink & then drive their cars, but we can stop guns from being obtained too easily & without checks. And the sale of automatic could be banned in the morning if legislators were willg to do the right & moral thing. One day more not doing so, is one day too many.

Before anyone accuses me of being a blleding heart liberal let me say; I am a Marine Corps combat veteran. I have fired both an M-16 and M-60 machine gun in combat. I fired many other weapons in training. These weapons are designed soleyly for the purpose of killing other human beings. Only military personnel need to have these weapons. Handguns are only good for killing other human beings. We don't need these as well. I can protect my home with a shotgun if I think I need one. Single shot breach loaded weapons are enough to hunt with. Those are the ONLY weapons people need to own and ONLY after 100% backround checks and mental evaluations. Even that won't end the violence but it WILL reduce it.

Awesome, your shellacking of the pro-assault-gun commentator was right on. I agree 100% with Senator Feinstein in that the needs of the many absolutely must outweigh the desires of the few as they apply to the 2nd amendment, now, in the post-Shady-Hook era.

I am a honorably discharged marine reservist and I am 100% behind any Bill or measure that needs to be implemented in order to make our country safe with regards to Guns, even (to the extent of) modifying the second amendment, which is obsolete, having been passed in 1791 during a completely different historical epoch of our nation. I've been shocked, disgusted, horrified, and saddened by the murder of 20 6&7 year old children who had their whole lives ahead of them, as well as that of the 6 heroic teachers & administrators who sacrificed their lives to save them.

The other night I spent 8 hours writing to my congressmen and to the President. I've never written to any politician before in my life on any other matter, but I've never felt so moved by anything as I have by the events of the past 3 days in Connecticut. In my letter, I suggested a new congressional Bill which I named the "Emilie Parker Bill" which is intended to control guns and make our schools safe. I also sent a shortened version as an email to Senator Feinstein, which I'll also copy and paste below ... I absolutely want the congress to do something about the problem of gun violence in this nation; the murder of twenty first grade children is absolutely unacceptable. If there was a pro-gun lobby, or NRA, victory in regards to this matter (i.e. a continuation of the status quo) ... then our nation loses; that would be a disgrace to the innocent people (indeed all people) of our nation and most especially to the memory of the innocent children taken from us (far too soon) from Sandy Hook. President Obama concluded his speech at the the other night at the Newtown prayer vigil: "let us make this country worthy of their memory," I hope that Senator Feinstein & President Obama can rally the congress enough to do just that.
    My recommended "Emilie Parker Bill":
    1) Increase (all) Firearm Sales Tax by 200%, in a manner similar to the added liquor & tobacco tax, added tax to support one armed security guard per school from K through HS.
    2) Increase yearly Gun licensing fees by 200%, similar to above, and universal licensing of all firearm owners. These added tax funds go directly to providing school physical security: bullet proof windows and doors at ground level, outside video surveillance, and alarm systems.
    3) Increase tax on ammunition.
    4) Immediate passage of the Assault weapon ban.
    5) Modification of the 2nd amendment which is now completely obsolete, having been ratified in the year 1791 during a completely different historical epoch of this nation when single-shot muzzle-loading flintlocks were the technology of the time and not semi-automatic, high velocity assault rifles with multiple XX round magazines. The founding fathers could not have foreseen the huge advance in military technology since their time, and the limitations of an obsolete amendment should not be incurred & imposed on Americans of the twenty-first century, thus modify the 2nd amendment appropriately, CHANGE: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” TO “A well regulated national military, reserve military, and national guard is necessary to the security of a free State; the right of the people to keep and bear Arms reasonably shall not be infringed.”
    6) “Reasonably” in the above change should include: A) maximum gun # limitations per individual (a woman, or any other person, does not need 7 or more firearms, even soldiers in war are not so armed beyond their primary weapon, a pistol, several magazines, and a couple of grenades). 3 guns at most are a reasonable limitation (shotgun, rifle, pistol). B) mandatory private minimum gun safe stowage rules, including fully locked storage places, to prevent children or any other unauthorized access of private stowage area. C) Appropriate psychiatric and other background checks shall be satisfactorily completed before each firearm purchase. D) This is a list of criteria for those (to define) who may not own firearms.

The intent of the 2nd amendment is to insure that the "people" can forcefully resist an oppressive (i.e. communist, autocratic or facist) government, police and military. I do agree that huge capacity magazines and modern military weapons are absolutely unnecessary in the hands of unregulated citizens.
There are many millions of law abiding owners of firearms in this country, many of us trained in the 60's and 70's by the military. As our history clearly demonstrates it's our national obligation and likely our destiny to be conscribed into service and forced to fight with a gun.

Philip Van Cleave compared guns to vehicles. So maybe we can enact laws that require every single gun to be registered, and each registration to be renewed every year, and every gun owner to go through hours of training, and pass written and practical exams before getting a gun-owner license, and have that same routine every year to be able to renew their gun-owner license, and require every gun to have liability insurance that must be renewed every year.

We can also have an ammunition tax that is a thousand times the price of the ammunition.

We should also require gun manufacturers to come up with weapons and ammunition that can only incapacitate but not kill. WeI don't need to kill someone for self-defense, we only need that someone to not be able to hurt us.

I agree, just calling people names who are pro-gun is childish. A discussion is between two people, not listening to yourself rant. There is a reason for the second ammendment, or it would have not been written. Triggers do not pull themselves, it takes a person.

Will someone please start asking the gun advocates what they think the phrase "well regulated militia" means? If the second part of the second amendment is sacred then the first part must have some meaning. Was the Newtown shooter part of a well regulated militia? The columbine kids? The Va. Tech shooter? Please make someone explain. Thanks

I am not a Gun advocate, I am in fact pro Gun control. I do know about history. The second amendment was ratified in 1791 shortly after the end of the Revolutionary war in 1783. At that time the continental army was to be reduced, and the defense of the nation would be left mostly to state militias. Read this article for a good explanation:

The bottom line: the second amendment is obsolete. There are no longer "militias" as there was during the time of the founding fathers. We now have a national military, a reserve component, a national guard, and a (state level) police force. And, the type of Guns available in 1791 were muzzle-loading flintlocks. We now have high velocity assault guns with 30 or more clips that were first designed as military weapons in the second world war (the first true assault rifle was the German Sturmgewher 44: ... notice its similarity to the AK47, in fact Mikhail Kalishnikov was a soldier in the red army during WWII and would've had access to the German StG44 captured in final years of WWII ).

The point of the history lesson was to provide an answer to the original poster's question as well as to underscore this point: It would have been impossible for the founding fathers to predict or foresee the evolution of military weapons design. The amendment was written for a class of weapons that was in its bare infancy ... this *clearly* makes the second amendment OBSOLETE and it needs to be re-written for the 21st century!

I am a retired police officer – people who advocate getting rid of the AR-15 and ignore the glock and sig-sauer handguns need to take their heads out of the sand. At close enough range (like a classroom) the guy at Newtown could have killed just as many children with either pistol. He didn't need the AR-15.

Thank you for your service. But, I think I would rather make an unarmed charge against someone with a hand gun rather than an AR. The capacity and rate of fire of the AR makes it a more effective killing machine. But I would agree that in this case, small children, had litte defense against an AR or hand gun. The killer was very very sick and not sure how to stop someone who is that ill.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. When they flew planes into the trade centers and killed inocent people, nobody blamed the airplane nobody banned airplanes. Still hundred of flights daily. Nobody says anything about the video games that teach violence. How about drugs does anyone know if he was on drugs. Antidepressant or illegal. They can all cause this kind of violence.
I hope all standing on the front lines to take guns from good people defending their Holmes and families ar the first into the gas chambers. Like the last who could not defend themselves

I personally know people who have accidently gone through their security at airports armed – and not been detected. Kids are still getting on planes undetected. I fly on a private corporate jet for business. Guess what ? They land and take off at a smaller side termi8nal with no Homeland Security checks at all. I wouldn't count on feeling any safer at all. Piers: you are right on point..We have got to do something now...I am truly baffled that anyone would think that it is appropriate to take someone with debilitating mental illness to a gun range and teach them to shoot. When you are living with someone who is mentally ill, all weapons should be off limits Guns require a level of responsibility that many people with mental illness, simply can't adhere to, We are being kind to keep guns out of the hands of those who are unable to comprehend the magnitude of the issue. It is time for everyone to stand up and start a conversation that will focus on keeping all people safe.

To blame this horrible tragedy on the firearms is absolutely insane. It's truly sad that people like you (Piers) and other liberals will use the death of these beautiful children to further your anti-gun agenda. Sad, but not at all surprising. It's well known that the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban had absolutely no impact whatsoever in reducing crime. Nor will any new weapons ban or law. Untill we can figure out a way to ban mental illness, you'll never stop a madman like the one in the Newtown tragedy. Shame on you and those like you for using this unspeakable incident to spread your lies and anti-gun propaganda.

USA..HELL YEAH!! Lunatics. One of the most retarded comments came from some idiot who said Sandy Hook wouldn’t have happened if gun control was lighter. You moron. I’m not anti-guns but they should only be used for legitimate war (if there is such a thing) and hunting. It's simple, if you have easy access to guns, people will be murdered. The right to bear arms is a nice sentiment but when there are millions of unstable people in the world, that right must be put aside, as most civilised countries in the world have done. Unfortunately it's too late for the US to turn around. And don't throw the argument up that the 'bad' people will get the guns illegally anyway..of course they will, but the level of gun crime and innocent people losing their lives will be minimal compared to what is occurring now.

First off my condolences to the famlies and friends of the victims, may they rest in peace. Unfortunately we do not live in a utopian country, like Piers thinks the U.K. is. To confiscate the firearms in this country will again unfortunately lead to more bloodshed as people believe that owning firearms is thier last stand against a tyrannical government and a perverse crime ridden society. We should have the right to protect ourselves, but I also feel that gun owners should bear more responsibility to there guns. A gun can sit on stump for years and not kill a living thing, it takes a person to pull the trigger. 40 people a day die from prescription medication overdose, that is 14,000 people a year from what doctors prescribe. What about herion, PCP, meth? To own a firearm should also involve a drug test and a proficiency test annually. All gun owners should own safes and manage thier firearms to full responsibility of the law and be held liable for thier guns. Like Obama said, our children come first, be safe America.

I am not in favor of assualt weapons nor large clips of ammunition but we need to look at the whole picture. The issue is not the guns, had the CT shooter only had pistols he could have done just as much damage. These children were shot 3 to 11 times each, a 22 caliber would kill with that many bullets. The real issue is people who are not mentally stable getting access to the weapons. Please read the facts below to understand that this shooting could not have been prevented by simply tough gun laws.

    – FIRST – The state of CT has prohibited the owning, sale or purcahse of assualt rifles since 1993. This include the bushmaster that was used . See below...

In 1993, the legislature prohibited possessing, selling, or transporting assault weapons, with limited exceptions. The 1993 act also gave those who lawfully possessed an assault weapon before October 1, 1993, nine months to apply for a certificate of possession to continue to possess the weapon. The act made a number of other changes regarding assault weapons (PA 93-306).

-SECOND- Federal law prohibits anyone under 21 from owning a pistol like the 2 found on the shooter.

So in this case all the current gun laws were broken! The shooter did not care and nothing would have prevented this because his mother was the gun purchaser and she would have passed any background check.

These horrible events can only stop when we start to identify those who are unstable and kept from harming others in the community. It does not take a gun to kill, in OK it only took fertillizer and fuel oil. We can take the ASR's off the shelves, limit clip capacity but if we allow someone mentally ill to go without proper treatment then no amount of gun laws will matter. In todays world we can only try and be proactive which will include thorough back ground checks, taking ASR's off the shelves and allowing parents and family to take action when they feel a loved one is having issues.

Sorry Neal but you're wrong. The guns were accessible to this person becuase of wherever they were located in the house. If they were in a locked safe he may not have been able to access them. If the mother was not able to buy an assault rifle it's most likely nit all these people would have died. Mental illness is no worse in the US than any other civilised country in the world, the only difference is...easier access to thse types of guns. When are you people going to wake up.

I am a hunter and love my guns. I do not own an "AR assault rifle", but would agree they are fun to shoot. BUT, I am willing to sacrifice this fun if it would reduce the number of killings associated with these weapons. These weapons really are designed for one purpose and they are quite effective. The victims in these tragic killing just never had a chance. Should everyone pack some heat when they go to a movie or school? Not a bad idea, but not practical.

This is really about the $$$$$$$$$. The gun lobby is so powerful, but this may bring some sanity back into what the 2nd Amendment protects.

The thing that make this country great, FREEDOM, also allows tragic events to happen. What freedoms are we willing to sacrifice to keep others safe? This is a problem with Americans, we want everyone else to sacrifice. Hey Im' all for more law and order as long as it has no impact to me or my pocketbook.

It's easy to agree with the argument you are trying to make, especially at a tragic time like this. However, you are oversimplifying the problem, and have completely made it one-dimensional. So, here is my first request. Propose a solution, and make it detailed for everyone to support. Simply calling for a ban on a particular weapon is ignorant and unproductive in it's attempt to prevent another one of these national tragedies from occurring again. Remember, cocaine and meth are illegal in this country, but hundreds of thousands are affected every year in the US by these drugs. Billions have been spent to stop illegal drugs, and thousands are harmed every year regardless. Simply outlawing a particular weapon would not curtail the epidemic of gun violence in the US, nor prevent another mass shooting of innocent children. The solution will need to involve a collection of the following:

    – More complete background checks for gun purchases / ownership.
    – Evaluating the past AWB, and determining if there was a positive trend in overall violent crime, especially focusing on the multiple victim crimes as a separate data point. If it shows outlawing high capacity magazines is effective, re-implement.
    – Focusing citizens of the United States on the negative social trends in our country. Why are young teens in Chicago so eager to shoot and kill other young teens without remorse? Families need to focus on values. It's important!
    – As discussed the past few days, identifying and providing quality care for those that suffer from mental illness. Anyone willing to murder innocent children is in need of extensive help before their mind ever gets that far gone.
    – Media coverage. No-one who is responsible for these heinous acts, ever, should have their name mentioned in a news report. I've seen CNN list the names of the past murderers on numerous occasions this weekend, giving them more and more immortality to those who are as disturbed and cowardly as they are.
    – Re-classifying certain weapons in the United States, curtailing access. If a civilian would like to buy an AR-15, at a minimum, extensive training and licensing will be required.
    – Lastly, deterrents in place where our most precious children are cared for. I'm not claiming that a teacher with a gun would have stopped this, but it is something that should be reviewed. Perhaps a couple of well trained individuals per school.

I make these comments as someone who owns multiple firearms, and has enjoyed the shooting sports for many years. I've never been a strong supporter of our current President, however, he was exactly correct in his statement the other night. We owe it to our children, that we must try to make things better. My young twins are not even 3 years old, and I shed plenty of tears this weekend for those families who lost their young angels. We have to take steps to prevent something like this from ever happening again. But, it's not as simple as placing blame. Multiple steps must be taken.

Shooting at a range, at harmless targets, can be a very enjoyable sport. It is a visual and audible stimuli, in some ways like watching a fireworks display. Endorphines are released in the brain, creating an enjoyment for the participants. After a tragedy like the on on 12/14, it seems cold and incomprehensible to see it that way. The last time my friends and I went to the range, it was a great time. That was pre 12/14/12. I imagine the next time I go to the range, I will likely be more reflective on the consequences of what can happen when guns are in the wrong hands.

Please help make this a productive solution and stop yelling at those that disagree with you. Respect their right to an opinion, or go join one of the other hack news channels. I would be happy to discuss and support your cause, but let's do it in a positive way. At the very least, those loving souls lost last Friday deserve that from those of us having never endured such horror.

I understand Piers Morgan's point of view regarding gun control but if he chooses to have guests who are not in favor of gun control, then he needs to let them say what their beliefs are without him being rude just because he doesn't agree with them. I am a legal gun owner and was saving up for an AR-15, but after hearing all of the people wanting to ban these types of weapons, I feel like I need to purchase it now before they become illegal or ban high-capacity magazines. I equate firearms to vehicles and assault rifles like a high-end sports car. In the hands of a deranged person or reckless person, they will hurt themselves and others. The bottom line is that we need to address and exercise more control on who we sell these firearms to. Background checks are fine but to disqualify someone based on mental state is a tough one to enforce. Regardless, Piers Morgan needs to be unbiased on his show when it comes to this topic. It really frustrates me and I end up changing channels.

Buy lower recievers, they are around $100 so with what you saved, buy several before a ban. But also be vigilent in who has access to your guns, please keep them safe and locked up.

I strongly disagree. No person in the world needs a semi automatic gun, no one except maybe military people. I implore anyone to give a good reason that anybody other than military needs one of these type guns. It too disgusts me as it does Piers, that anyone can equate one of these guns with a high end automobile. Also as to background checks, this latest incident in Newtown would have happened with even the best background check because the gun belonged t his mother. Don't you people get it. Children are being killed and all you want is your fun gun. Who's crazy?

I wanted to make sure you do understand the difference between semi automatic and automatic. First no civilian is allowed to own an automatic weapon leagally unless they are a historical collector and they are thoroughly screened. Second, if you ban semi automatic weapons then you will remove some shot guns, most pistols and any number of rifles. I own a 22 caliber rifle that I teach my boys to shoot with and its semi automatic. Semi automatic means one trigger pull yields one bullet which discharges and loads another. Thats it, nothing like automatic...

Thanks Piers, someone should tell Americans from a outsider perspective. A hamster, which runs in its own wheel does not know when to get out. Piers – I watch CNN because I believe it is an honestly fair and decent source for unbiased news coverage. Watching you the past couple days has left me sick to my stomach for the network that airs your show, your credability as a journalist, and the viewers who assume they can tune in to watch you act as a respectful adult able to have a civil debate. As a liberal who is for gun control reform, your juvenile antics and complete disregard for civil debate has turned this into Jerry Springer style, garbage television. An earlier post that compared you to FOX NEWS's Bill O'Reily is exactly right.

You should be ashamed, and aware, of how foolish you look when you reduce yourself to a screaming "carnival barker" , as opposed to some of your fellow respectable journalists on CNN.

Thank you for furthering this noble cause, Mr. Morgan. Your give-and-take with the gun rights advocate was exemplary, but I'd like to address two points that I think deserve additional attention:

The automobile comparison is not just INVALID, it is absolutely LUDICROUS. Automobiles are subject to a laundry list of regulations in order to be manufactured, sold, and operated in the US. There are minimum safety standards as well as performance standards, for example. Then there are regulations as to what makes a vehicle "street legal", such as noise and ground-clearance. Also, ALL vehicles must be registered, even ones that won't (or can't) be operated (at least here in California where we have "Planned Non-Operation" registration). And, of course, operation of vehicles is highly regulated. The bottom line is that there are far more regulations applied to cars than there are for weapons, and that's simply unconscionable. If the gun enthusiasts are so keen on treating weapons like cars, then I say, "Have at it." Lets start regulating the manufacture, sale, ownership, and operation of guns the way we do with cars.

When the interviewee brought up the 1960s, I was on my feet with rage. He said, "We didn't hear about these things when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s". What about the Texas Bell Tower massacre of 1966? Think that's an exception that proves the rule? Then what about the assassination of our President in 1963 with a military assault weapon purchased by mail-order? He said that today "It's about drugs, not guns". WRONG! It is now and always has been about GUNS.

I've heard their talking points too often and wished someone would come back with responses like the above. Maybe next time.

I watched you both last Friday night and tonight. You were considerably better mannered tonight! Yes, as a nation, we MUST do a better job at identifying and helping dangerously mentally ill young men. I have taught for the past 12 yrs in very rough inner city Cincinnati, Ohio schools and have known many troubled young students. Our school safety has always been very similar to what they had in Connecticut, locked glass doors with a buzzer. Such safety is a joke, as I have always feared. There at least needs to be bullet proof glass on the door, or better yet Lexguard (a superior clear bullet resistant plastic). There also need to be armed teachers who have concealed carry licenses. Israel has armed teachers and Israel does NOT have school shootings. I am from out in the country and have owned many guns my whole adult life, and lived in a gun household my entire life. I have also held an Ohio concealed carry license for nearly 9 yrs. The US has always had a large number of civilians owning guns, and not until the last few decades have we had such gun violence (even though violence is generally at a 40 yr low in the US). The gun “safety zones” of schools are actually gun slaughter zones that merely ensure all law-abiding citizens do not have weapos inside...making it safe for evil people to commit mass murder there.Gun control just kills the innocent, as it has always done because only the law-abiding obey such laws.
Your comparisons to the violence rates in other countries, especially British Commonwealth nations, is not valid. As a Social Studies teacher who scored in the top 15% of ALL US teachers to ever take the most difficult of all Praxis II Social Studies Content Knowledge tests (with an MA in History, a BA in Anthropology. And an Associates in Pre-Law) I know a lot about human societies...not to mention that I have had both English and Canadian girlfriends! You well know that Europe, England, and all their colonies were the product of authoritarianism where freedom and the right to own weapons was long dead even before guns ever existed, leading to great violence there centuries before now. Your emotional hysteria must NEVER be allowed to destroy the 2nd Amendment to the US Bill of Rights here, even if you use former victims and a terrible tragedy to do so.
The US right to keep and bear arms came about because of the wrongs your ancestors visted upon the former 13 Colonies, forcing our Founding Fathers to vow never again! We will not allow ideologues, such as yourself, who aren't even American, but from the same tired old wrong nation of socialistic evil to hijack a terrible tragedy and turn it into an excuse to transform the only true democracy in the world into a police state... which would delight Obama and his fabian socialist friends. Go back to the Socialist “Democrat” UK and the failed EU!!! Your old world brought both world wars upon humanity, not to mention the Holocaust, and murdered the most people who have ever died in all human history. Do you really think you have the right to preach to the United States of America, the greatest light to ever shine upon the world?

As the daughter of a WWII veteran, a niece and sister-in-law of police officers, I was advised not to have a gun in my home to protect myself and my belongings. Why? Because of the element of surprise. An intruder, a gunman, or a mentally ill person with a semi-automatic assault rifle does not "declare their intent to kill or rob someone" as in a war where war is declared on another. The most likely scenario would be that the intruder would turn the gun against me because I am not trained like a police officer on the job or like a soldier on the battlefield.
Where are the statistics that show a person carrying a legal weapon can react in time to defend themselves against an unexpected surprise spray of bullets? An intruder with intent to kill with the element of surprise shooting dozens of rounds in mere minutes and seconds in an elementary school classroom that is just starting their day, or in a dark movie theater, or at a church service, or even in a coffee shop in Lakewood, Washington where four armed police officers were ambushed AND KILLED has the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE AND THE ABILITY TO SHOOT DOZENS OF ROUNDS OF BULLETS THAT KILL. The laws of physics say the intruder with the fastest gun that shoots the most bullets FIRST wins.
As for being the daughter of a radio man on an aircraft carrier in WWII, I am lucky to have even been born. He was in a chow line on deck when an automatic gun with hundreds of rounds went off and was pointed at the chow line-several sailors died that day because the gun went off un-manned and was left pointed the wrong way- human error.
The gun advocate comparing the assault rifle to a Ferrari and skewing the murder stats by adding suicide should be ashamed of himself- what if it were one of his children in elementary school that got shot and killed with 3 to 11 bullets?

The gun is only a tool and when used in the wrong hands can be totally devastating as proven on this past Friday. Any weapon can be used in this manner if a mentally or emotionally disturbed individual wants to inflict violence on others.
Banning Assault weapons will not solve the problem. We as a society and parents need to recognize and be willing to be forthcoming as to mental problems with our children.
This mother knew her son had mental problems but failed to recognize or realize & accept what this individual might be capable of.
This is not to blame his mother. Any blame should be on our Government & society as a whole for not accepting & caring for those who need mental help.
If Miss Feinstein would spend as much time on correcting the problem as she does in placing unwarranted blame her state of California might just fare in a better light. My heart & prayers go out to all of the families of he victims in Newton.

If I hear one more person compare guns and cars I may just vomit@! Guns are machines made to kill. Cars are machines made for transport. True, cars can and do kill people even though that is not what their purpose is. Guns can and do kill people and that is what their purpose is, maybe not to kill people, but to KILL. Making that comparison is comparing things that are not the same – no useful purpose.

We require people to pass tests to get a driving license and register a car before they are allowed by law to drive.
We do not require people to pass tests or register to get a gun. Why the fight not to register guns or people who buy them? We do require people that have criminal records to be reported and then not to be able to get guns, that works to a point if the gun dealer checks the registry. However, the person and gun are not required to pass tests or register the gun.

I am sure many people out there will think I am absolutely out of touch for asking this simple concept, but I hope there may be a few people out there that may agree. Assault weapons are another discussion altogether. What real hunter really needs an assault weapon!

Than he goes after one of our men in blue, this man was a deputy sheriff, and Morgan still took pleasure in a good dressing down of some one that laid his life on the line for us. he has no shame, this man that lives here in our country, making the kind of money that he does, and says what ever he wants. he doesn't attack his drug taking Hollywood jerks, that make the movies and the games that make our kids sick. they are his friends he hate the rest of us. How dare you Piers Morgan! How can you criticize a country that isn't yours. Each country has its problems and its issues, but how dare you speak out about rights of citizens in a country that isn't yours. And if you would look into facts of the Connecticut shooting you would be see that the gun control regulations in place did work. The shooter tried to buy a gun and the gun store refused to sell him one. The shooter still acquired the weapons, and people who are determined enough will find the weapons. I have watched this segment and I want to talk to Piers about this issue. He is spreading discontent and antagonizing people just for ratings. He is doing nothing but trafficking in human misery and he should be ashamed of himself. I am not saying that these tragedies are devoid of sadness, but the path that Piers Morgan is taking and demonstrating on his show is mis-informing the public about the current gun regulations. I CHALLENGE HIM TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUE! It doesn't have to be on TV, I just want to let him know how disappointed I am in him and his chosen path in this issue.

Could that be because once you return fire, you are no longer the citizen doing justice, but become one of the assailant person(s). Therefore putting yourself in the possibility to do "hard time" for doing what is right.

Maybe even a limited liability if your gun is used in a crime. That truely is the issue not so called assault weapons but gun owner respociability

Having guests who have relatives killed in shootings did nothing to add to a rationale conversation about the issue.
Morgan's failure to address the mental health element of this issue is appalling. He has no right to call himself a journalist in any form.
CNN has no business allowing him to represent them in any manner.

We have immortalized 9/11 for the lost of life that occurred on that day, and rightly so. My hope and prayer is that we Americans will now mark 12/14 as the last day that we allowed our children, or any American citizen, to be slaughtered.

Here is a little history lesson for ya:
On April 19, 1995, McVeigh drove the truck to the front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building just as its offices opened for the day. Before arriving, he stopped to light a 2 minute fuse. At 09:02, a large explosion destroyed the north half of the building. The explosion killed 168 people, including 19 children in the day care center on the second floor, and injured 450 others
This was worst, some of these were infants that were killed and you know what;NO GUNS WERE INVOLVED. But it's ok because at least he didn't use a gun.

My question, or rather concern is we have focused all of our energy on guns themselves. A gun is only as powerful as the ammunition placed within it, otherwise rendered useless correct? I see no arguments toward this, I am a gun owner and enthusiast however I have earned this right through age and clear background checks. Now to purchase ammo is far too easy. Very few states have regulations on the purchasing of ammo which is a huge mistake. Tighter regulations must go into place with this as well, I believe Illinois and Massachusetts require a card to be shown before purchase. This means 48 other states you are legally able to buy ammo past a certain age. So now this gun which was useless is an active killing machine. I have no problem showing a card to buy ammo if it keeps people who should not obtain it from doing so. Guns are already in the hands of so many, working toward alternative measures is a large step which must be taken Immediately. There is no reason in the Newtown shooting he should have had 100+ rounds to fire. Where did he purchase all this? Have if there were restrictions he would not have been able to, just like he was denied the ability to buy a gun.

If i'm not mistaken his mother owned all three weapons and ammo. So no control of any sort would have worked. She should not been able to buy any firearms while a mentally ill person was living in her house.

The moment you allow the government to control what we can and cannot purchase (as home or self defense) you put the government in the position to become a domestic enemy. Where will the control stop? as said before "People who are disturbed and evil can kill lots of people with or without guns." This has been proven time and time again. I am extremely disturbed by the recent actions in the conn. school tragedy. Deepest sympathies to those families. Do not make a rash decision on these events, they could have happened with or without the use of guns. The problem is not the weapon of choice, it lies on the person(s) weilding the weapon. Keep in mind there a ways to build a weapon of such destruction using only household chemicals. Take the "GUN" away and those derived to do this, will still do it, one way or another.

I have tried to get the facts so far out, as a father of two young boys and a gun owner I blame his family and friends. I dont blame the guns, he should have been mentally evaluated but alas he can not because of stupid regulations. His mother was the gun owner not Adam. He could not have leaglly owned any of those weapons. Thats the facts! His mom should have removed them or locked them up once she saw he was not stable. You can ban all weapons and killings will still occur. Just look to Chicago which banned all handguns in 1982. It has some of the highest murder rates in the nation with guns. We need smart guns laws but more importantly we need smart mental health laws.

After all these years, Feinstein is still as ignorant as ever. Improved Gun Regulations is something even die hard gun owners would be willing to support. No one wants these killings to continue. Gun Control in Feinsteins's uninformed mind means Gun Bans. Gun Bans do nothing to remove the existing hundreds of millions of the exact weapons that she and Piers want to ban. The next step to a ban is confiscation. Do these people seriously believe that Americans are going to voluntarily turn in hundreds of millions of expensive personal defense weapons just because a few politicians get pressured into passing a law? A well armed militia is necessary for the preservation of liberty. The only thing that keeps a populace from losing that liberty is that well armed populace and that doesn't mean muskets. Syrians are fighting in the streets for their liberty. Half of the Arab world has had to arm themselves to take back their liberty. Yes, all citizens should have the right to live their lives without the fear of being killed by a gun but not at the expense of every other person's right to defend themselves. There is a reasonable way to resolve the problem by discussing stricter regulations for purchasing, owning and selling all firearms- not just the ones you find objectionable. However, when you start challenging free people to justify a need for something or it can be banned by law, you open a door to oppression. There is no NEED to hunt, to fish, to own a car that can exceed the speed limit, to have a soda in excess of 16 ounces, to have alcoholic beverages. Who decides? The law does not protect what is perceived to be needed it protects liberty. We tried banning alcohol and drugs and look how well that worked out. Every ban has created the richest organization of criminals in world history. Who thinks a gun ban would be any different?

Mr Morgan, you Sir are an arrogant ignorant man and a disgrace to your profession and CNN. Your extreme personal views and opinions incite hate and anger and are counter productive . A reputable journalist does not set up interviews, cut off guests when their statements don't match your views, and you most definitely don't yell at your guests. I enjoyed watching CNN because of their fair practices in journalism. Looks like CNN is becoming MSNBC because of the rude and extreme views and opinions of Mr Morgan. Solada has even changed her style and pushes her personal views and agenda. So sad!

When was the second ammendment written? In the good old days when you carried them on your hip.... Isn't it about time this was changed. Next question.... how do you get rid of all the guns already in the streets. All we need is people carrying them on their person...just in case the bad man came. I dont feel that anyone has a chance against anyone carrying a sub machine gun trained or not. The principal and teachers did not have a chance even if they were trained in handling guns. Baby steps. By the way. The gentle men who claimed that a gun was fun, Horray for you, by putting him in his place...BRAVO

Yup, the good ole' days just like our first amendment. Are you ready to reconsider what we are doing now? Just because a law is old does not make it bad. The second amendment was put in place so the people could not simply be walked over by a goverment. Gun laws dont matter! Thats the sad fact, for proof look at the city of Chicago. The city outlawed the sale and possession of handguns in 1982. Police still confiscate an average of about 10,000 firearms each year. Chicago also has some of the highest gun violence cases. Look, I am not saying we dont need tough background checks and get ASR's off the shelves but we really need to keep guns out of the mentally challenged hands. In order to do this they need to be diagnosed and tracked, this way they can not legally buy a weapon. That's it, gun laws dont work because people who should not have guns dont have a record so back ground checks dont work. Not to mention in this sad case the mother bought all the weapons, the shooter was in control of these weapons illegally. He was 20, can not own a handgun until 21. The Bushmaster ASR was also illegal to buy, sell and own in the state of CT. How his mom had it I dont know, the state made it illegal back in 1993. So he broke every law we have! It does not matter to evil people.

This is the most sadistic crime I believe I've seen in my time. I've got 4 children of my own and couldn't imagine having to deal with something so horrible first hand. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and loved ones of those in CT. The issue of gun control has been addressed multiple times over the years. I believe the issue, only compounded by Mental Health issues, is some people just do evil things that we can't predict or prepare for. These high powered rifles have restrictions for civilian purchase, and are legally purchased by most of the people who own them. Stricter gun laws won't prevent the person next to you from killing someone. Those that choose to break the law, find a means to do it. Stricter gun laws won't remove the guns from the hands of those who already intend on doing harm. Guns are sold and traded illegally just like drugs. Consider this also, most of the gun related killings in this country are not by assault rifles...but are by handguns, or other long arms. Mental health issues drastically compound this situation. Whereas an individual with mental health challenges may not be able to purchase fire arms...who's to say they can't steal one. Or, on the other hand, just as China is dealing with...a man stabbed 22 kids!!! Weapons have been around since the beginning of time...whenever possible, those that choose to violate laws and injure or kill people, should be held accountable without delay or restraint. Guns (of any kind) don't kill people...People kill people. As sad as it is...whether 1 victim or 20, and whether it's a gun or knife, or other weapon...these crimes will never go away. Look back over the last 20 or so years...the more we have taken God out of this country...the more evil has taken hold. Taking God out of schools...out of quotes, sayings, proceedings...pledge of allegience, was one of the worst things this country could do. We should start trying to fix this problem by putting God back in this country like when it was founded. As far as laws, the laws that should be addressed are those that keep people on death row for 20 years, or set a Child Molester free after 5 years. We have more laws that make life easier for law breakers that we do ones that punish them. Again, the thoughts and prayers of my family extend whole-heartedly to those affected in CT.

Shane, thank you for your service and honor you bring to your country. I retired a little over two years ago from active duty. After all I have done and been through for this great country I cant help but feel helpless and extremely sad. I feel as if I failed these children and their families somehow. I am also a Christian and although I haven't attended church in many years my I live my life by faith and strong moral values. I too am a father of three yet my kids are probably much older than yours. Although my kids are older we still had several discussions about this tragedy. No matter how old they get they will never be to old to learn and I will always be their teacher. There are many things that are lacking in America today. Morals, integrity, and faith in something good are probably a good place to start.

Somehow the politically powerfull, the KKK, the neo-nazis,the brown shirts, the black-shirts,the gray-shirts,cartels and mafia never want for weapons, just ordinary people get disarmed.

Piers, I really don't care what others believe your motives might be. I do care that so many innocent lives have been lost, as recently as Friday. Folks, it doesn't matter how you cut it, a gun is a weapon and now more than ever, appears to be a 'weapon of mass destruction'. Piers, insulting the American population only worsens the debate, but for God's sake, DO NOT GIVE UP! Keep pushing! I must say, I will never understand the need to possess a gun. America, time for change; a change in culture, address the criminal element, re-write your amendment (it is quite out-dated, don't you think?) and no longer serves the purpose or meets the requirements for which it was written.

I have two daughters and 5 grandchildren. My deepest sympathies go out to all those who lost loved ones in this senseless act by an obviously crazed individual. I can't even begin to comprehend their grief. Had I been there I pray to God I would have had the courage of those who gave their lives to saves others. I also have a concealed carry permit. If I truly believed that turning in my so called assault weapons would save even one life, I would gladly do it in a heartbeat. But I know that one single act on my part would have absolutely no effect on carnage such as this. Guns are not the problem. People are the problem. If there were absolutely no guns at all anywhere in the USA, carnage such as this would still take place. Matthew 2:16 "Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men."

In reply to Shan. Organized gang stalkers. I was not aware of it, however I educated myself and I am a victim. Our Politicians are organized gang stalkers in particular the Republican Party. Their only interest is to protect and defend big donors (big organizations), such as pharmaceutical companies, NRA, big insurance companies and etc.
As a victims of much of their failures because I am trying to expose them for corruption, they are trying to have me murdered and I have been a victim of gang stalking for years.
As a woman who was never vaccinated as a child, I have proof that childhood vaccinations causes brain and health damage. Also, they are giving health insurance companies big breaks at taxpayer's expense. Because I am trying to expose them, they tricked me into the emergency room of the hospital and then tricked me into the psychiatric ward to have me fraudulently diagnosed with suffering mental problems. Obviously, evil leads in America and do not be fooled by them. The worst are usually the first to run to the microphone to deceive the public in believing that they care.

I read somewhere that the shooter was subjected to bullying. Yet his horrible crime cannot be justified by any means. Soon after the shooting incident, lots of people started talking about gun control again. But no one talked about the other side of the story. What or who made this person to do such a horrible crime.
I am a victim of organized gang stalking. I have been experiencing rude and strange behavior from people in public places. In my case at the very beginning, I experienced workplace mobbing in my former workplace in Denver, CO. Later, It turned out to be community mobbing or gang stalking. If you google it , You will find a lot of articles about organized gang stalking. I am under 24/7 covert illegal surveillance. This is not a conspiracy theory at all. The stalkers ultimate goal is to make the victim isolated from the society. The stalkers do that by sharing victims personal information with friends, family, strangers , co-workers and anyone who comes into the victim's life. The stalkers tells others half truth and twisted lies about the victim. After this point, You realized everyone is rude. Your friends act in a strange way implying you that they know your personal stuff. If anyone tries to help you, the stalkers try to turn them against you by using cheap and evil tactics. For many reasons, most of the people think the victim is paranoid or he/she is suffering from some sort of mental illness. But the truth is the victim is so stressed because of what he/she has been going on for months or years. Unfortunately most of the people who are part of the stalking program do not realize OGS is a slow kill method.I have been going through this for past 2 years now. Could school shooting also be a result of gang stalking? When a gang stalking victim tells others what he/she has been going through, most of other people think the victim is paranoid. It's hard to believe a group of people spend so much time and money just to harass one person. When someone goes through this everyday life and no one believe him, There is a possibility that he/she could end up doing something like this. In my case, at least I have some kinds of support system and some of my friends actually believe what I say. But I don't think everyone can deal stalking situation with patience and responsible manner. Some people may take desperate measures at desperate times. I believe it's important to address gang stalking issue too, if we al

growing up in so cal I saw my fair share of violence in school that was caused by someone with some sort of mental problem. not all but but to name a few instances one boy getting hit with a bat from some one with a Mental problem. Some one found a bomb over our school cafiteria wear I ate lunch with my friends and that was very scary, We had a couple bombs found at our school I think.

I own serval guns some for historical personal reasons and some for hunting, only one semi rifle from ww2 and all in a gun safe. But one thing I cant understand is why any thing over a 10 round clip are still egal in other states. I never saw the point of the ar 15 either, My dad had one and the thing always jammed. In calfornia you can still buy one but without a pistol grip and detachable mag so that law does not fix ANYTHING! I dont know if its just california but you have to have a backround check and wait 10 days even at gun shows or online. If you buy a handgun you have to take a handgun safety test as well. so it seams to be a state problem. You also cant blame an object like guns bombs knives or a single person like obama as much as we should blame ourselfs for not helping the mentaly disturbed and cutting programs that may have helped them before. I don't know if its just me but alot of shooting ever since reagan.

In my community it has bean very sad since reagan and the new republican view of cutting mental programs and poor programs, cause the amount of mentaly ill people homeless in my city is heartbreaking. It makes me want to cry hearing the storys about how their family abandonded them and again when the mental facilities closed down. they cant afford to pay for their medication because they have no money so what do republicans do but cut more programs and wine about taxes.

Let's Ban not only Assault rifles and also includes:

    – Magnum 357, 41, 44, BMG 50, Desert Eagle, Casul 454, S&W 500, Colt 45, 10mm, .40, 45 AUTO, 357 SIG, reloded ammo, etc

And to own a gun must have:

    – Background check for state, military and federal offense
    – drug use test
    – Max 2 defense guns per person
    – Hunting rifles – not assualt rifles – max 2 per person
    – Attend a 15 hours training and legislation course every 3 years
    – pass a psicological evaluation – every 3 years
    – 2 weeks hold at least to buy a new gun
    – Stop Gun Shows, where people sell used guns without control
    – MUST HAVE a strong safe that can hold every gun at home
    – limit ammunition buy to defense ammounts – max 100 per year per gun registred

I agree with most of your ideas Marcelo. Some great ideas! I would take the hold period a little further and suggest it be at least a month. I would also suggest that a background check should also be done on any other adults or teens in the home. I don't agree with the 2 gun or ammo limit as limiting ammo would be too difficult to track nd enforce .I have never been to a gun show where guns are sold without background checks. That would be completely illegal as I believe the ATF regulates and inspects gun shows and individuals with an FFL who sell guns at those gun shows. Not sure where people keep getting that info and as a legal gun owner would be shocked and angry if it were true.

Mr. Van Cleave who was on last night's program blamed drugs for the problems in America, not guns. It seems on some reflection that if guns are fun, they give a sense of power, invincibility, that they are a sort of drug and that people who need their gun "fix" are holding the rest of America hostage. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" is a mantra they keep throwing about, but people with mental illness or a propensity to violence with a semi-automatic in their hands are many times more lethal than someone without one – Guns don't kill people, people kill people, but people with guns can kill a lot of people in no time at all – 26 people mowed down in 2-1/2 minutes. The problem with you Sue and all those like you is that you try to take this tradgic accident and those like it out of context. When I say out of context I mean out of context, as in Planet Earth context. You totally disregard the violent history of man, the ultra-violent history of man I should say. a history defined by our faforite pastime – war. The Illegal wars we are engaged in now which have left 100,000's of thousands dead. You forget about the fully-auto (assualt rifles) , mortars, grenades, rockets, missles, tanks, jets, subs, and just to prove how insane our planet is – nuclear weapons. You live inside the zoo bars with the animals. Why do you get to take one subset of humanity – law abiding citizens and relugate them to knives and slingslots. The mantra's you critisize are just summations of some relevant observations. those who don't mind going to prison or back to prision will have guns, those who do wiill not. How hard is that to understand, There are people who do and have used weapons (guns) to defend themselves, including women. How come these people don't count.

Let me say this..... if there was someone at the Sandy Hook Elementary that had a gun on them on the day the massacre happened – who do you think would have attempted to save those innocent children & adults?! A bystander on the outside or the person carrying the gun?

Christine – I concur with your statement! I find it reprehensible that Dianne Feinstein wants to "Write Legislation" for gun control when she, herself, holds a concealed weapons permit!!! Not only does she openly carry a firearm; she sends her staff to tactical training school in order to train them to use the very type of weapon she wants to ban! Now whether that's on the backs of the taxpayer, I don't know. Can you say hypocrit?

Better yet, Ms. Feinstein, why don't you give up your concealed weapons permit and gun, as well as, your bodyguards armed with the very guns you want to ban in order to get more press; and walk the streets of Stockton, CA, where the murder rate is over 70 for 2012 alone?

Cristine, I hate to say it, but you are correct. IF a public school ANNOUNCED it now has 20% of its staff trained and certified in the use of hand gun defense and that each one is carrying a legally concealed weapon then the chance of that school being hit are greatly diminished. It is a sad solution, but it is where we are headed. America has practically forgotten 911 and will eventually forget Newtown. We are too complacent, and it will is costing us all each day. We should prepare for what is ahead which, in my opinion, will end up with terrorists conducting coordinated attacks on our rural schools and other public venues that are susceptible, easy targets. When that happens we lose our way of life and become a military state. Our enemies will then have won.

All are valid questions. If this person did not have access to a semi automatic assault rifle less people would have died. We should address lots of things that can lead to mental health such as bad parenting, divorce , poor nutrition , violent culture and .....! As we do all this we should also have laws that limit access to weapons that make mass killing possible!!!!

If the Assault Rifle Lanza used made all these killings do you explain the stabbing of 22 kids in China. The slayer in China didn't have a gun. Nor did King Herod...they used swords and spears...even stones in those days. People are the problem. If assualt weapons are banned...what will everyone's excuse be when someone else kills 1 or 20 people with an assault weapon obtained illegally??? I'm not directing this towards you...but all the statistics about all the statistics about lower crime rates and gun killings, etc...for Great Britain and Australia...guess what, the US Population is more than 3 times that of Great Britain and more than 15 times that of Australia...the percentages and rates are going to be lower because of the drastic population differences! Not because there are or aren't as many guns.

Like I mentioned in my post last night, whether it was with an assault rifle, a handgun...or a knife or a bat...this deranged man wanted to kill those kids and he would have found a means to do it. Friday, when all those children's lives were taken in CT...a man in China stabbed 22 kids. So...should we ban knives too?...should we ban bats? about fishing string because you could technically strangle someone with that?...or maybe..............I could go on and on. Just like the Mathew 2:16 that was mentioned earlier...slayings have happened for years...even before there were guns. The problem isn't Assault's not hand's not hunting rifles or shotguns...It's people and the total lack of basic human respect and compassion that this country has lost for each other. Until we put God back in this country like when it was founded...and we, as a people..."a nation under God!"...start to refocus on the basic foundations of human decency...taking care of one another (including Mental Health!)...we will unfortunately probably see more slayings. I personally agree 100% with the saying "guns don't kill people...people kill people!" I own several guns stay locked up and they have never killed anyone. I'm glad I have never left them unlocked, they might jump out and kill someone! Aside from the RARE, ACTUAL ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE that might injure or kill someone....Guns require a PERSON to load, aim and shoot them to kill someone! We need to fix people...not guns.

Someone mentioned earlier about the rise in violence, crimes, etc...since Reagan left office. I couldn't agree wasn't too long after Reagan also that this country began trying to pull God out of our schools also.

Reagan who has been given much credit for his greatness, actually destroyed our Country. Reaganomics – less Government but big business, which left the greed wide open to be greedier. We do not want Government control, however we want Government regulations so that big businesses do not take advantage of the poor, such as banks. It's greed that sent our jobs to China and as the result, Americans are unemployed while we are promoting slave labor in China. Gave the rich tax breaks but taxes the disabled. It takes decades to suffer to end results.

Vicki...Wow...I didn't actually think someone would take this issue at hand...this evil crime against 26 people...and intermingle Tax and business issues. I simply related at the issue of OUR government taking GOD out of our schools starting after Reagan was in office. I will not sit here and debate over greed, small businesses and taxes amidst the issue of these kids being slaughtered by a deranged man...Fridays' massacre was a culmination of severely poor Mental Health Care and the detachment of love and compassion for fellow man from this country. Bring God back into the LIFE of this country, like when it was founded...and this country would see far brighter days! For those that choose not to believe in God, or are offended by Christianity, etc...then go back where you came from, home-school your kids...or just keep your opinions to yourself. This country was founded on Godly principles! Keep your blog entries about small business, taxes and money in another blog...not ones related to these events about these kids getting murdered.

Before we look at gun control why don’t we look at mental health? It seems we want to take guns away from the people who are legally allowed to own them but we turn our heads when it comes to the millions walking around with sever mental health issues. If you take a look at all these attacks the shooter had mental health issues that were untreated

I don't disagree that there is a need to readdress gun control in this country. However, banning a certain type of gun is not going to solve the issue. Just as much damage can be caused by a handgun running a 10 round magazine as an assault rifle with a 30 round magazine. The people who want to cause harm are going to cause harm no matter what rules or laws are put into place because they have already BROKEN those laws and don't care anyway.

You morons just don't get it, someone that is determined to mass murder will do so with or without a firearm. The biggest mass murder was done with box cutters and planes. The second was with a truck and fertilizer. There are several ARs owned in America and 99.999% have never shot a person. Why are you idiots want to punish us lawful gun owners?

It would be nice if you or those like you would just once come up with a point that in some way had some reasoning to it, It's not like gun owners are stupid or evil. "NRA self righteous" who says – we just choose to defend ourselves, @nd amendment archaic, who says, it;s purpose had nothing to do with hunting. I don't think the world is an any less dangerous place today than when it was written? claiming they promote gun safety, I don't really care if they do, but they do have safety programs in place.NRA members are criminals, just another slander. Children? Well this works into the theme I see over and over. No context for any othe consideration other than this tragic event at this point in time, no historical considerations, case studies (Australia) just here today this event. Then there is the "gun lovers", ego maniacs, power hungry, etc. etc., Really I would just love to see a gun control advocate make just one point that does not include slander and allegations, A point that can hold up to some type of scrutiny. Please remember when you say things like "why would you need a weapon to kill someone" that what the public holds is just a faint faint shadow of what the militaries have Now what are those weapons for., see that is the world we live in. like it or not.

I own quite a few guns including semi-automatic rifles like the one the shooter used. I've never used mine to take a life. Thats the issue, is the person that pulled the trigger. I do use mine in the course of my employment and have my permits and licenses from the ATF in order. Somehow I doubt the shooter had any. So please, I don't need the whine about changing gun laws ot protect the mentally disturbed from causing harm, if anything you may want to advocate for more mental health care for them first and foremost.

Earth to Feinstein and Piers: The second Amendment exists so you can protect yourself not just from criminals but from the government which is growing more tyrannical by the day and continuing to grow into a fascist Orwellian surveillance state nightmare which only exists to take more of our money and eliminate our rights. We cannot trust you anymore since you are wholly owned by the global fascists who want to enslave us all and make us increasingly dependent on the government for everything. America's Spirit of independence is being gutted by people like Morgan and Feinstein.

What happened is a tragedy at Sandy Hook, But you CAN NOT say that if one or two teachers could lawfuly carry this wouldn't have happened.

This kid should have been in a psych ward, If he wanted to do mass scale violence there are so many ways to do it without a gun.

If you are trained and certified there is no reason that a LAWFUL citizen cant carry inside a school, bank, mall, anywere

Police response time ( even though i love enforcement ) 8 minutes
Lawful trained citizen with pistol: 3 Seconds

Lucky for me even Obama thinks Piers is nuts. I believe Obama will eventually make the decision to put armed individuals in schools, it is the objective pragmatic solution. If this incident proved anything it's that ability of us to create a "gun-free zone" is a laughable delusion. Obama has no interest in taking law abiding citizen's guns, he has always said that. So Piers please go walk the streets of Queens, east LA, south Chicago, southeast DC tonight unarmed and unescorted let us know if you have a paradigm shift in the morning.

How can the workers go back to the factory the next day and continue to manufacture those guns? I wonder what they are feeling or thinking driving to work and when they start up the machines that make the assault weapons.

Kevin – They are probably glad to have a job. You could also wonder if a worker at a tobacco company thinks about all the cancer deaths, if an employee of a beer company thinks about the deaths and hardship caused by alcohol, if an auto worker thinks about traffic fatalities, or if anyone thinks about the mass murders happening through out the world that are paid for and supported by you as a US tax paying citizen.

Lee – getting paid for something doesn't justify the job. Assault weapon manufacturers are proud of their product and I'm sure at least some of the workers are too. They can't all be working there because they have no other choices. I don't smoke and I don't understand people who do. I'm lucky to not have an addiction to alcohol. I drive a car. And I am a tax payer, although I have been against the recent wars since a handful of men in Washington made the decision that has affected the entire world. I have very little say in how my tax dollars are spent. Alcohol, tobacco and cars, regardless of my views, are not manufactured only to cause damage and death.

Tragically this country seems to care more about its' rights to guns than it does to human life. In the 1800's we had slavery in this country. God fearing Christians supported this. We fought a war over this. Now people apologize for what this country did and believed. Someday we may be apologizing for what we continue to do now. Piers Morgan came here from England. All of our ancestors came from somewhere else. He is right regardless of where he comes from. He is trying to save lives. This country is wrong about it's need for all these guns just as it was wrong about slavery and segregation. We already have 300 million guns in this country. That is more than enough.

I've been to Ms Feinstein's San Francisco – a bastion of leftist fringe thinking, hedonism and drug abuse. A fact to consider is that drug abuse kills more people each year than abuse of firearms including suicides. Considering the latest movement to legalize recreational drugs coming from the western states I have to ask: If the preservation of life is their goal, why is it that the same people who wish to ban firearms wish to legalize drugs?

    What's up?

I found this article very interesting...please read!

Do you remember the blockbuster hit film The Matrix that was released in 1999? You may not know this, but it has deep spiritual implications concerning the times we are living in and Bible prophecy.

It tells a story of how these "agents" are trying to turn us into machines. We are closer then ever before for this to become a reality when they cause us to receive an implantable microchip in our body during a time when physical money will be no more.

You may have seen on NBC news concerning the implantable RFID microchip that some people are getting put in their hand to make purchases, but did you know this microchip matches perfectly with prophecy in the Bible?

"He (the false prophet who deceives many by his miracles) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name...

You also may have heard of the legendary number "666" that people have been speculating for possibly thousands of years on what it actually means. This article shares something I haven't seen before, and I don't think there could be any better explanation for what it means to calculate 666. This is no hoax. Very fascinating stuff!

...Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666" (Revelation 13:16-18 NKJV).

To see all the details showing why the Bible foretold of all these things, check out this article!

GOD is sending out His end time warning:

"Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, 'If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name'" (Revelation 14:9-11).

In the Islamic religion they have man called the Mahdi who is known as their messiah of whom they are waiting to take the stage. There are many testimonies from people online who believe this man will be Barack Obama who is to be the biblical Antichrist based off dreams they have received. I myself have had strange dreams about him like no other person. So much so that I decided to share this information.

He came on stage claiming to be a Christian with no affiliation to the Muslim faith...

"In our lives, Michelle and I have been strengthened by our Christian faith. But there have been times where my faith has been questioned - by people who don't know me - or they've said that I adhere to a different religion, as if that were somehow a bad thing," – Barack Obama

...but was later revealed by his own family members that he indeed is a devout Muslim.

So what's in the name? The meaning of someones name can say a lot about a person. God throughout history has given names to people that have a specific meaning tied to their lives. How about the name Barack Obama? Let us take a look at what may be hiding beneath the surface...

"And He (Jesus) said to them (His disciples), 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven'" (Luke 10:18).

In the Hebrew language we can uncover the meaning behind the name Barack Obama.

Barack, also transliterated as Baraq, in Hebrew is: lightning

    baraq – Biblical definition:

From Strongs H1299; lightning; by analogy a gleam; concretely a flashing sword: – bright, glitter (-ing, sword), lightning. (Strongs Hebrew word H1300 baraq baw-rawk')

Barak 'O'bamah, The use of bamah is used to refer to the "heights" of Heaven.

    bamah – Biblical definition:

From an unused root (meaning to be high); an elevation: – height, high place, wave. (Strongs Hebrew word H1116 bamah baw-maw')

The day following the election of Barack Obama (11/04/08), the winning pick 3 lotto numbers in Illinois (Obama's home state) for 11/5/08 were 666.

Obama was a U.S. senator for Illinois, and his zip code was 60606.

Seek Jesus while He may be found...repent, confess and forsake your sins and trust in the savior! Jesus says we must be born again by His Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God...God bless!
