Dr. Michael Welner on the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre: "This is an indefensible act"

Tonight, "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Dr. Michael Welner and Dr. Mehmet Oz for an insightful discussion inside the mind of a killer. Welner, a forensic psychiatrist at NYU Medical Center, says the shooter's behavior in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was disgusting. "This is an indefensible act," he says.

"If we don't collectively, in the press and leadership, say 'this is disgusting, this is repulsive' but rather to say 'who failed him?' then everyone who has a grievance, like him, who nurtures it and then says finally 'I want my grievance to be heard because I'm anonymous' there is an incentive for relevance and there is a vehicle for escapism of video game immersion who want to be deadened to crawl in the cracks and stay there where no one can discover them until it's too late."

Oz, host of "The Dr. Oz Show" is more concerned with mental health than guns in America:

"We need a homeland security approach to mental illness," Oz says. "In psychiatry - hands are bound. So many rules govern what they are allowed to do it makes it almost impossible for them to be able to provide that type of broad scale support."

Tune in at 9 p.m. for a live update, discussion and debate on guns and mental health in America.

Please start to address the issues of " who are the gun users" not just how many guns are out there. Factors leading up to the users are violence in movies, video games, not enough parental interaction in the family. Get Hollywood actors and producers on your show to talk about why are they making such movies. Never hear any of these questions to the Hollywood people. Also medical doctors prescribing drugs to young people who then have altering behavioral problems. These are contributing factors that cause guns to be used. Please dig deep and keeping them honest on your program.

Whether you are for or against gun control you should never accept this form of journalism, actually this isn't even journalism. It's crazy, while gun control may be an issue, it is becoming more clear everyday that the US media system is completely corrupt, bias, and subjective.

What is even more pathetic is that CNN and FOX have both profited off of this tragedy.

Google the Stats: Murder rate Detroit Michigan 2010=364; 2011=308 souls lost
Murder rate Windsor ontario – less than a mile across the border & Detroit rRver 2010= ZERO; 2011=ZERO. Twin cities devided by a narrow river, connected by 2 tunnels & a bridge.

For sanity & intelligence look north of the border. For Cowboys & idiots (& Pratts) look South of the border!
God Rest the souls of the innocents in Newtown. God Bless those who mourn them.

Question to all "Good Christian" folk who support the NRA: W.W.J.D? -Here's your answer:
Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword (Matthew 26:52, King James Version).

If Americans choose to live by the gun, the Bible explains what to expect as the consequence.
God Bless Newtown & the massacred Holy Innocents.

Where guns (pistols, rifles, assault, and high capacity clips, et al) are "everywhere" in our society, persons who, for whatever reason, "lose" all sense of "hope" (for whatever reason, and it may not be a "reasonable reason") that person may "snap" and become a mass murder "shooter." When mental health access becomes as accepted and as available as guns, then we have a chance to turn this out-of-control turn toward violence in our American society. Senator Dianne Feinstein was recently seen on TV being interviewed regarding Newtown and its horror, and she said, "Is this America? I don't think so!" Well, I have news for you Honorable, senator, "THIS IS AMERICA NOW!!!" Until Mental Health is as "funded" and available and accessible and accessed as often as guns, we will continue to have these events. The NRA (I am a 2nd Amendment supporter, not an NRA supporter) is not the enemy "the enemy" is the lack of will, the abundance of objection to funding mental health care and access.

Walter. Well and good. However, the issue is assault weapons and why the need for them to be legal to purchase. We get the 2nd amendment here. Think about it, if assault weapons were not available, this killer would not have gotten his hands on one and wantonly and callously slaughtered all those children, right? Sure he'll use a simple pistol or rifle, but, as horrible as this sounds, collatoral damage would have been minimized. Can't you and others here see the sense in this?

I would also add, Walter, that the need for reform in mental health treatment is what one needs to include when you talk about mental health services being as available as guns. The abusive, dehumanizing and violent forms of mental health treatment, and mental health "treatments" that are motivated by the love of money more than the love of country and our citizens need to be stopped completely. If you want to see a system of mental health treatment that works and saves the country money look at the Open Dialogue treatment in Finland which HEALS the worst kinds of mental illness. When individuals have a nation that will uphold the value of the lives of its individuals, this, in and of itself is a factor in having mentally well citizens.

The issue not being addressed is that guns are far more accessible than mental health care and support, and its the "crazies" whether temporarily by an adverse life event or suffering brain "damage" that is the real issue. Until we are willing to "fund" our "America" to become a "mental health" oriented society, the "violence" oriented reality will be constant and repeating in things like Sand Hook.

Guns don't decide to kill people, bullets do not decide to kill people, and the argument about removing guns will not remove the "will" to violence and killing that can easily be done in any other number of ways. The issue is that "we" in America become something different than who we "are" now–violence oriented in settling our sense of individual anger, rage, complaint, angst, injustice, you name it. We shun mental health and glamorize guns, we get people using guns instead of mental health care. That is the key issue. The real issue, regardless of whether you take away all guns or not. The fear that you are going to take "some" persons' guns away will result in them using their guns in mass killings. It's called "blow back" and you/we will see it soon–more gun violence not less over the paranoia about the "government" taking away "our" guns.

Mr. Pierce Olbermann Morgan's loyalty and focus has been towards more legislation surrounding gun control versus providing suffering families and Americans the time to grieve. Most insensitive gesture and part of his self fulfulling prophecy. I surmize that Mr. Olbermann Morgan's ratings begin to fall as followers become disenchanted with this type of 'entertainment' versus real news.

We control many things, and "reasonable" control is needed, and we as a society should control many things, like extremely lethal/addicting substances, speed of cars on roads, shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, etc. What that control may be on guns ought to arrive a reasonable control. "No" controls at all is unreasonable. "Taking away" guns is unreasonable. We must arrive at what is "reasonable." But guns or no guns, there is no solution if "hopeless" people have access to cars, knives, deadly chemicals, many things with which they can kill people. The issue is "mental health" and the irony is that those who defend no limits on guns seem to be against any public funding on mental health which is the root of the cause of violence. Just like Benghazi, the people complaining that the State Department didn't protect the lives of our Americans there also voted against funding additional "protection." So who is really at fault?

I love my right to have a firearm, although I'm sadden from what that looney toon did to those people, but he had it in his head to kill, even if there were no guns in that house, he would have used something else! It's not the guns, the type of guns, it's the deranged! And his mothers irresponsibly to store them the correct way, but again he would have used something else! It is because of people just like that, that is why I have firearms!

I can imagine that you also dislike other immigrants, or people of color... how quickly you turn to labels- to try to dismiss Piers from the Bucolic green hills as some foreigner who should not be listened to... when of course the major voices for gun mania are white men... white men who don't like Brits... Piers: I am armed and military trained to handle weapons. All of my weapons are in a safe with trigger locks. The ammo is secured in a separate safe. None have hurt anyone. If addressing gun violence is the agenda; There is a box that brings it into my living room all day long. Zombies is entertainment? Tom Cruse movie postponed? Game consoles, all gun violent. Did your segment the other night address any of this? Did guns blow up the train in Spain, or the bus in England or bring down the WTC? Would CNN allow you to run a campaign to clean up the airwaves too?

Eric. Perhaps you can be part of the solution. It sounds like you are a responsible gun owner, who would no more think of hurting someone that I would (never owned a gun). I can't see how you would would be against gun control that 1) requires training similar to your military experience in both handling and safely storing them 2) makes this kind of training and demonstrated proficiency a requirement before a gun license is issued, and 3) has a licensing similar to the DMV that differentiats between licenses cars, trucks and motorcycles for various styles of guns. I just can't understand why driving a vehicle should require so much more training than owning a gun. What do you think??

Forced "no guns" vs. "forced" no restrictions on guns is mutually insane. Reasonable regulations is the answer for America, and mental health is a serious matter that is "forced" in being covered-up as I think was the case with Lanza. He needed much more mental health care "a long time ago." That he had guns at his finger tips and even was taught to use them by his mother whom he murdered shows the complete insanity of "take away all guns" or "no limits at all on guns" or "mental health is your problem not mine." We seem to be saying these things over and over–it's all wrong.

Piers, thank you for your continued spotlight on the out of control gun violence in the US. May Mr. Pratt rot in hell....what a pompous ass to say the shooter was EVIL, forget any mental illness that may have contributed to the situation. What a complete idiot!!! Why do we have ANYA KIND of laws if we are such a sad sack society that we can't manage them? Why have speed limits, why can't anyone have a nuclear weapon?? Why do we give a fig about any other country having nuclear weapons?? I'm sick to my gills of people justifying their own selfish desire to play Rambo over the lives of fellow citizens and especially children. THERE MUST BE EMPHASIS ON MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND TESTING AND THERE MUST BE A BAN OF ASSAULT WEAPONS AND HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES.

I totally agree, Mandy. Piers has presented evidence that other countries with strong gun control have minimal deaths by gunfire, compared to the outlandish amount in the U.S. This monstrous group of lobbyists (NRA) have complete control over our Congress. It's time for the American public to make some noise...LOUD noise...and get the assault weapons out of the hands of civilians.

Pierce, I am from Canada and watching what happened at Sandy Hook and the debates on Gun Control and the legality of assault weapons really distresses me. In Canada there is a limit on magazine sizes for rifles of only five bullets maximum. All rifles whether it has a built in magazine or removable all need to be modified to hold only five cartridges. The way we see it, if you have a rifle you use it f

I can no longer watch PM because the very few times I have tried he is just rude, obnoxious, belligerent, and a one-sided bigot. What happened to journalist being impartial and hearing both sides of the story?

It’s gotten to the point that even if I agreed on something with PM (which I typically do not) I just can’t watch him. I’ve been home sick and can’t thank CNN enough for their coverage of the horrifying events of the past weekend. But when PM comes on, I have to turn the channel.

I beg the producers of CNN to please find someone or something else to fill this spot that equals the rest of the excellent reporting that the entire CNN crew does. PM does a great injustice to the entire team.

    Piers,
There is one fact that trumps everything. The AR15 rifle was manufactured for the military to do one thing and one thing only. The AR 15 is designed to KILL PEOPLE. End of conversation. It should be banned, along with high capacity magazines. If you are a hunter you know that hunting laws restrict the amount of bullets in a weapon is limited.

    December 18, 2012 at 9:33 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Rob

All guns were designed to do one thing, shoot a bullet. If the shooter did not have access to the AR he would have used the shotgun, if he did not have the shotgun he would have used the pistols. The horrible end result would be the same. Its not the gun that did the killing. Add a hundred new gun laws to the system and ban all the gun types you want, this will not deter the next sick person from doing the same type of terrible act. Knee jerk reactions to ban the "scarey looking" AR simply will not stop the next killer from killing. As for high capacity clips- cant get a 30 round clip, just buy three 10 round clips, takes half a second to change clips, again another useless idea.

Maybe this type of journalism is acceptable in Great Britain, but has no place on American T.V. Do you think you are Simon Cowell, and your show is American Idol where it is acceptable to criticize and humiliate the guests? You don't hold a candle to Larry King. I agree with Pierce. I grew up in an era where it was safe to walk to school, shopping malls, anywhere. Sure you heard of crimes but NEVER EVER of this nature or magnitude. What the hell went wrong with all of us? Is this where we are at now...where it's not safe for children to be in school. Then on the other hand, you have every psychiatrist coming out of the woodwork. Is it really about mental health and if so, what is going on that so many have mental health problems? This is what we all need to ask and address. Then we have the issue of the assault weapon that people are arguing back and forth about. They are HIDING BEHIND the second amendment. Doe they really know what the second amendment really says? Have they read all of it? Do they even know what year it was written and for what? What it does not state is that people have the right to bear military assault weapons to mass murder people. These are uneducated people who probably want a name for themselves. So now you have everyone saying stronger gun control, for who? The gangs, the criminals, the law abiding citizen? What is next...our children carrying guns on the way to school? We have gone too far and this is shameful. Twenty 6 year old children????? Really? How far will we let this go? We all sit back and complain when we don't like what our gov't does and says....we all have opinions but yet we don't come together all of us across the country and do something. Something has gone wrong in America.

    Mr. Morgan and CNN,

Perhaps it's time to place the brakes on Mr. Pierce Olbermann Morgan and his show. Since the school shooting it has become quite obvious Mr. Morgan wants to be remembered as the individual carrying the flag for gun control (self-fulfilling). This family and extended members have been pleased with Mr. Morgan's show and CNN in general, but after the last two evenings interviews (or lack thereof) we are unsure. Mr. Morgan's position may differ from his guest, however that doesn't make him a "stupid man" nor one that supports shootings like Mr. Morgan suggests. We are incredibly dissappointed with Mr. Morgan who has previously demonstrated intelligence and good will. I think we are done with this type of "entertainment" versus real news. Perhaps some experience about the topic he discusses might lend some credence to his thoughts.

Maybe, you need to open your eyes. Do you really think if assault rifles are banned that this will keep them out of the hands of the deranged or criminals of our society? Larry was brilliant on the obnoxious Brit's show tonight. I joined the NRA at age 63 last Friday night because I saw this anti-gun movement coming. I just wanted to voice my support and offer this angle.

A couple days ago I was speaking to an airline pilot friend about him carrying a firearm. To my surprise, pilots are not required to carry a weapon (as I mistakenly thought the result of 9/11 was), but they are 'allowed' to carry a concealed weapon.

This is the direction I think we need to go. Lift the ban on concealed weapons everywhere. This plants the seed of doubt that would likely stop most of these evil mass murderers. Just the thought that in a mall, movie theater, school, church etc. there MIGHT be someone who can shoot back would act as a deterrent.

Because they know there is no initial resistance, they get their unabated '15 minutes of fame'. If they knew someone might blow them away before they even get started, they might think twice. All of them know they will eventually commit suicide, but if they know their deaths might be in vain, they would puss out. Pratt was dead on. Where there is even the hint of gun presence, the cowards do not tread.

Before you start talking Piers know the definition regarding MENTAL ILLNESS, AUTISM AND ASPERGERS THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT EVEN THOUGH ITS ALL UNDER MENTAL. PEOPLE ARE ALL DIFFERENT COLORS BUT YET WHERE ALL PEOPLE. I am truly upset my son has autism who would have been a victim without a doubt not because I want to believe it but because I know it. My heart truly goes out to the children and parents of NEWTOWN. Now I have to worry how the world will perceive my autistic son. Stop throwing out his autism with the name of a KILLER I am not here to judge that young man and I don't know what demons drove him to do that but thats not me to decide thats the man upstairs. My son didn't choose autism autism chose him and all these kids who are under that umbrella again not MENTAL ILLNESS.

Anna Autism isn't as you probably know usually a case like this at all very rare and to top it all off he has more than that, so what I would tell you and your son is when he grows up to never use that as a crutch or excuse. I'm not saying you will.. All I am saying if he uses that for his strength/power oh man will he go far Anna. I got misdiagnosed when I was in 9th grade.. In and out of hospitals for a year and a half until finally a savior of a Dr. said Dylan you don't have that you actually have Bipolar. so that was a huge relief. anyway ever since I was little my dream was always to go into the military either Marines or Air Force well 9th grade kinda crushed my dreams. But from day 1 I made a promise to myself side from the military that what ever I want to do with my life by gosh I will do that and succeed with out fail. So please Anna don't be mad or angry what ignorant people like Morgan for they don't know the struggles we go thru strictly because we are good ad covering them up. Know that your son will have a very bright future and tell him to use it as a strength and not a crutch. If you have any questions Anna please feel free to ask! 🙂
Ohhh and Bipolar has almost always linked to most killers even tho thats just an excuse to not give them the death penalty I don't let it bother me one bit due to the fact thats not the truth and who cares what other people thinks of me? as long as I can help someone I'm happy!
Like I said get a hold of me if you have any questions!

Piers the point you are missing regarding the 2nd amendment is that many see that as the main barrier to the government taking away their freedoms. They live in fear of their own govt and it has little to do with self defense. It plays right into the right wing narrative of being opposed to Washington and states rights vs federalism. If the govt has big guns then citizens need them too otherwise they won't feel they can be really free. It is the politics of fear and the survivalist notion of being able to fight off the hoards when society collapses.

Knowing I will be flagged immediately,(THOSE OF YOU WHO SEND CONTRARY E-MAILS HAVE TO REALIZE THIS)I still have to question this fellow's right to comment on our system. He comes from a frame of reference where intrusion on personal freedoms is normal, and while it may have curtailed gun violence(although, what happened at that school in Scotland a few years ago?),knife violence leads the world. The first time someone shoots back during one of these situations, this form of evil will end.The running theme in these cruel, self indulgent, criminals and their blind families is cowardice. On every level. And to not acknowledge the evil that is persistent, and has been for ages,is dangerously naive on the part of the public and the families of the obviously disturbed. As is the clinging hope that banning weapons will stop evil. The true hand wringing should be how did we,as a whole, create this situation.Where did we open the door to this Pandora's box?

Timothy. Nobody, including, Pier Morgan are advocating getting rid of guns. Just want the answer to why semi-automatics should remain legal and free to purchase? We get that. Nobody's advocating of abolishing the 2nd amendment right to bear arms, although, I believe it's being twisted and turned to benefit one group's agenda. I find it appalling that most on this thread seem to "skirt" the question of semi-automatics and refuse to see or totally deny that there's no need for them to be sold on the streets legally.

Pierce Morgan, how easily you forget why the American People have been enshrined with the rights which even you while living in the U.S.A get to enjoy. Let me refresh your memory. Over 200 years ago many of your former citizens
Left your country because they were tired of been persecuted. Once in this country your King felt he could still control us.
Many people died defending those rights and many even now will not hesitate to defend them now. What makes you think that once you step or try to change the 2nd amendment that will be the end, why not go ahead and change a few more of the amendments we dont like. Had the new American citizens had not stood up, we would all speak screwed up English and have
bad teeth. We the American are resilient and value those God given rights. It's easy for the President and those rich politicians who call for more gun control to say that stricter gun control is the answer. Let them give up all that tax payer funded top notch security and will see how long their song last. The main culprit in most mass murders have been people with mental issues, and unless this is address nothing will matter. Look up the Bath, Michigan massacre no guns involved but a crazy indiviual whose sole purpose was to kill innocent people. Like Charles Hesston so elegantly stated "You want my gun, over my dead body". Like the Toby Keith song says "Sleep well tonight, knowing American soldiers will keep you safe tonight".

For those who use the excuse, "I need my guns to protect my family, " I have a question for you. Do you drive a giant Hummer or a big wheel truck when your family is with you. Or does your wife have these types of autos? Well, there are thousands of people who die in auto accidents. Many more people die in auto accidents than attacked in their home by an intruder. You are only as strong as your weakest link. Why only protect your family with a gun and not with the strongest, biggest bad ass car they make? I feel that the gun is only an extension of a man's penis.

I didn't say "arm yourself with a truck" my point is if you feel you need to protect your family from ANY SORT OF HARM then you should also be putting them in a huge truck or fortified automobile because your family has a greater chance to be injured or killed in a traffic accident than having an intruder come into your home.

I cannot believe the ignorance and immaturity you show in this discussion. Don't act like a child that is tuning out someone else with a different viewpoint. Listen! Listen to the argument and challenge yourself to consider a different viewpoint. The tragedy was a result of children and adults who were "DEFENSELESS" against a madman! Taking defense out of the hands of the responsible majority leaves them vulnerable to criminals who are going to find a way to get a weapon, firearm or not, to play out their unimaginable demented initiatives. This has nothing to do with responsible people having guns. There should be stricter policies on acquiring firearms, along with training and licensing, but taking them away completely is not the answer. And I have to say something about your comment that a politician should ignore what the majority wants in order to step up and be led by some moral calling. I'm sorry, but we are not led by dictators who think their sole ideas are the best. Our country was founded on democracy, which means representing the majority, not ignoring them when they don't agree with you. United States leaders should not impose their beliefs on the people, but rather gain knowledge from what the majority of the people want, and represent that.

How many of thegun supporters that you have talked with or get comments from have a child that is 6 0r 7 years of age or grandchildren that age and do they remember how much those kids weigh and what their body types are like? How many of the dead dear childen were struck by one or more bullets – to the point that they could not even be recognized – these people are idiots. An assult rifle has no place in a home – a shotgun for hunting maybe – but there is no good coming out of an assult rifle being in a home -where whn not taken proper care of can get into the wrong hands.
All of these murders we discuss – they're not one on one – they are 10/20/30 or more – all of these sick people are out to hurt or kill as many people as they can so their name will live on in history. I am for assult rifles being taken any and make a federal offense to have on in your possession.
And oh by the way – I have lived all but two years of my life in America – but for 2 years I did live in the Midlands of England on a international job assignment and my son was born there and its where my wife and I have felt the safest.

I've done my RESEARCH.......I KNOW the TOXIC EFFECTS to the BRAIN from these Ingredients..and I would SERIOUSLY like to see just ONE of these people EXPLORE this SIDE. It's not Politically CORRECT – I know. PLEASE do it – and I encourage EVERY PARENT to do the same. It doesn't take a ROCKET SCIENTIST to FIGURE this out. LOOK AT THE TIME LINE when MULTIPLE VACCINES were injecting into these little bodies – and NO, not EVERY CHILD is affected the same – in years. My Pediatritian warned me back in 1976 – and I am GRATEFUL every day....that he did so. Mental Illness is Inherited – but Poisons that get to the Brain – as in Vaccines ---manifest symptoms often much sooner. God BLESS all in CONN. and around the world

You are also my hero! I am an elementary school teacher and I am crushed by this tradegy as all of us in America should be. Why do we have such ignorance in our country? We have not educated our nation to a respectable level that reason and logic prevail over fear. The true evil we have is this ignorance that drives that fear. I applaud you for trying to educate and hope this will make a difference. We need change in gun laws now! No more innocent lives lost!
There is an abundance of evidence to support this position and thank you for providing this in forthright way on your show. We need God in this country not Guns!

.... No doubt restrictions should be increased regarding certain weapons and the topic of gun control should be debated. The real problem here is how we leave our children vulnerable without protection, whether you are talking about an armed police officer or better security enabled schools....

If you attempt to remove all weapons from law abiding citizens then only criminals will have them and they WILL be brazen about the crimes committed... My uncle is a police man in Britain and he could not disagree with you more piers... He is at a disadvantage everyday because not all of the force carries a weapon. Limited because of gun laws and the people suffer from a greater number of violent crimes, robberies and break ins per capita.... piers stop pandering to weak minded people that follow you like a sheep, believe the embellished facts and lies you spread every evening. If you are a journalist, look into the when requirement passed in Washington DC that gun owners had to register their firearms and after about 30 days it was passed that pistols were illegal and that they had to be turned in to the police. Convenient, law abiding citizens registered their guns only to be informed that they would have to turn them in to the police. Do you think the criminals registered their firearms? When did Governor Paris Glendening hold a press conference to display the assault rifles taken off of the streets in Maryland? All the rifles on the table were marked MSP and belonged to the Maryland State Police. It was staged. They were not from the street. Piers have you attempted to purchase an assault rifle legally? Find out exactly how it is handled. How about the fast and furious deal that allowed guns to be purchased by a straw man purchase and when dealers called the ATF the culprits were allowed to walk. How about the judicial case in Washington DC where two women were victimized and decision stated that the police did not have to protect the citizens. If you are truly a journalist then research these incidents and maybe you might understand the belief that many have on the second amendment.

It seems following a tragic event there is a high demand to make a new law to stop or prevent. Yet in all this debate I have yet to hear a law that would prevent this particular event from happening. I have even heard our President say that he does not have the solution but something needs to be done. There is not one person who advocates this violence, even if someone is pro gun. We keep passing laws to protect us from life while giving up our civil liberties. If no laws are passed it does not mean that we don't care about those children's lives, that is absurd. Sometimes life is cruel, let's not make laws based on emotion but common sense that the laws we make have a purpose and more important an effect.

I am not an American. But when I see this whole situation from the outside, it seems painfully obvious to me that when a country says its OK for its citizens to be carrying assault weapons (the name justifies their purpose) then it is OK for them to be using them too at their free will! That is simply an obvious result of such a situation. Guns are meant to be fired to KILL, not to be used as showpieces in your house!! And an assault weapon is made to be used for ASSAULT. Anyone saying that Guns protect you from killings, is deluding themselves of reality. I for one feel lucky to be living in a society where everyone is not free to own a gun. My heart goes out to all those families who have lost their loved ones to gun violence for no fault of their own.

Piers, Thank you for always bringing forth important issues with tangential journalistic views. Dr. Wellner is a reservoir of information regarding the criminal psyche. His long standing fascinating background with the criminal justice system involving murderers and mentally ill subjects has not yet been fully explored on television, particularly on the Sandy Hook tragedy. Given more time on tonight’s show, Dr. Wellner would have enlightened the nation in ways Dr. Oz could never respectfully accomplish. Consideration should be made for a future in depth interview with Dr. Wellner. It appeared he had more to say...I would venture very important issues not yet discussed in the media

What criminal is going to break into your home & wait 10 min for you to unlock your gun safe & load your machine gun? The fact that your kids will inevitably get shot by accident, anger or suicide is just 'collateral damage'- who cares as long as your paranoia is calmed by surruonding yourself with loaded machine guns?

    Gun Control's Twisted Outcome
Restricting firearms has helped make England more crime ridden than the U.S.
    http://voices.yahoo.com/the uk gun ban 3819560.html?cat=17
The trail blazing UK held the distinction of having the toughest firearm restrictions of any democracy and their 1997 handgun ban became the "gold standard" of gun control.
How has that UK gun ban been working?
In the four years from 1997 to 2001, the rate of violent crime more than doubled.
Your chances of being mugged in London are now six times greater than in New York.
England's rates of assault, robbery, and burglary are far higher than America's.
53 percent of English burglaries occur while occupants are at home, compared with 13 percent in the U.S., where burglars admit to fearing armed homeowners more than the police.
In a [2002] United Nations study of crime in 18 developed nations, England and Wales led the Western world's crime league, with nearly 55 crimes per 100 people. [1]
Gun crime in London is increasing so rapidly that police fear they may not have the resources to cope. In a 2001 BBC report, officers stated there had been a 100% increase in firearms related crime in the capital. [2]
"When Seconds Count, the police are minutes away."
Northern Ireland [home of the IRA] is the only part of the British Isles where significant numbers of civilians are granted permits to carry a concealed handgun for self defense. According to the International Crime Victim Survey released in August '01, Northern Ireland had one of the lowest levels of victimization of any of the 15 industrialized countries studied and England had the highest
With the exception of gun related deaths, 2008 UK crime stats show a significant rise in gun crimes, the biggest since 2004. [6] The overall picture since the UK gun ban clearly shows that gun control is not crime control and only serves to empower the criminal and inhibit the liberty of her people.
A Church of England vicar had this to say, "It seems as if we have slipped into some bizarre parallel universe where the basic rules about the way human beings communicate have been suspended. What can we say or do? We feel so powerless. "We need to ask hard questions about a kind of society that makes possible such a callous disregard of human life." [5]
By adopting a radical gun ban, the UK abandoned the principles of their own 1689 Bill of Rights calling for the citizenry to "have arms for their defense." The abandoning of such principles is not a practice that a Freedom loving nation desiring the safety, pursuit of happiness, liberty, and justice for all should emulate.
Remember folks, it is the law abiding that abides the law. The bad guys will not comply with gun laws and will remain armed. So what is the purpose of any nation stripping her people from the right of self defense?
"No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" Thomas Jefferson

"When Seconds Count, the police are minutes away."

I am a mother of a middle school asperger kid. I followed the Sandy Hook tragedy in the past couple of days. All the words to describe Adam Lanza can be applied to my son – socially withdrawn/awkward, aloof, loner, limited eye contacts, quite, shy, intelligent, good at math. However, I need to state here – there is a HUGE gap between insanity/violence and all of the above behavior traits. All of the above are COMMON to asperger or high functioning autistic people. However, it doesn't mean they are DANGEROUS. To me, Adam Lanza is just another victim of asperger who has not been treated CORRECTLY. His final day behavior is EVIL, but he is not EVIL, he is just INSANE. His insanity is caused by the long term ISOLATION caused by his mother, who I believe should be responsible for a large portion of this big big tragedy, even though she herself is one of the victims among this tragedy.
To me, the difference between asperger or autistic kids and the regular kids is their special needs that they need to be trained at the social skills. Unlike the regular people who are able to develop the social skills by themselves, asperger people need to be TAUGHT of those. They need to learn these skills through a cognitive way. Their social skills would be improved through repeated practices. However, I read the news about Nancy Lanza, she decided to provide home schooling to her son, maybe she thought she provided a protective environment to him, she actually took out the chances for him to pick up those critical social skills in a group environment. I can not imagine the poor kid who desperately needed a group environment had been placed in a totally isolated big house for 20 years. No wonder he ended up with insanity. We need to understand autistic people have the same needs like the rest of us – they need to love and be loved, they need to have friends and families that they feel they can connect to. Adam Lanza had the needs just like you and me, what he was lacking of are the skills to fulfill these needs. His mother visioned her son is socially abnormal, tried to provide a shelter to him so he won’t get bullied in the outside world, and the total isolation leads to the final insanity and the tragedy.
Maybe I am critical to Mrs. Lanza who had suffered all the years to try to find out a way to help her son. But I have to say, I don’t agree with her approach at all. All the parents with asperger kids need to go through the painful process to watch their kids behave socially awkward in their early lives, but by giving proper training to those kids, they will gradually move into the right direction. When I picked up my son from the after school program, I saw he was standing among the other kids and talking to them – just like the rest of the normal kids. It is a long way for him to get there. I like to assure those parents with kids who have asperger syndrome, your kids will be fine and you will be fine. Just be patient to work things out. And I like the general public to know, there is no association between asperger and insanity. All the kids can grow up well and contribute to this society, as long as we treat them in the way they need. Understanding is far more difficult than just giving other names like EVIL when a tragedy like this happens. Digging out the root cause and providing the support is the only way to avoid another tragedy to happen in the future.

Mandy, I hear you. It's been brought up several times on various media outlets that experts were quick to point out that individuals with Asperger's ARE NOT violent prone and to think and judge this so is absolute gross ignorance. You should NEVER feel one ounce of guilt for this. YOU ARE NOT a Mrs. Lanza and for those to think so should be ashamed of themselves for painting with a broad brush here. I'm truly sorry that this unfortunate incident has made you very sad and very concerned for your child. It's a shame.

This is not an American vs British argument, it's a sane vs.insane argument. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different outcome. If nothing changes in the law nothing changes in our outcomes, in other words we keep getting shot up by strangers. Does it have to happen to you before you get it?

      StatS: Detriot Michigan 2010, 364 murders – 2011, 308 murders
Windsor Ontario 2010/11 two years straight = ZERO MURDERS
Windsor is less than a mile across the Detroit river from Detroit michigan. Sanity & effective gun control is North of the border. Selfish, ego centric bullies are Sourth of the border.

        Hey cocos

one thing is for sure. I know which of the 2 in this interview I would prohibit having a gun/weapon.The one who remained calm and respectful. I seem to remember Penis laffin and agreeing with one of his guests saying of another of Penis' guests, should be taken out and shot...for having an opinion not agreeable to his, no less. Nice! It seems the ones who want guns abolished are the very ones who would resort to gun violence. He ( Piers) also commented on British tv that he wished he could take some of the contestants out and machine gun the ones he referred to as being talentless and unworthy to be on the show. LOL. This shows where Penis' mind is really at yathink???

Penis does the death of those children an injustice and is an offense to the tragedy, the children, parents and all involved. What these children would want at the very least is not more anger and hate between people who disagree. To use the death of innocent children to further ones POLITICS I find more offensive than the heinous crime committed by a young boy who was not in complete control of his faculties.

Piers does nothing but hide and distort facts and thats bcos facts do not support the Liberals arguments. Simple. He resorts to name calling often when loosing arguments to his guests. He does not want to do justice to those children bcos he totally ignores the real issues in this matter. He is a self serving hypocrit and frontman for the NWO. Wake up pal.

Have American's declared war (on US soil) against thier own neighbours & kin?
What has war got to do with it?
My Dad was a W W II vet & did not suffer just for a simplistic word "freedom". W W I & W W II were fought as the 'war to end all wars". Our vets fought forDemocracy & peace and for a dream of a safer & better world where their children could thrive & prosper with a good system of law & order. It's not just about YOU & your freedom to clutch your penis (I mean gun/ phallac symbol).
If you are so scared & paranoid buy a well trained guard dog & an Alarm system. Support Obama care with enhanced mental health provisions. Agree to contibute more to taxes to build mental hoospitals. Then take a break in one yourself brother!

BTW. Your phallac analogy only demeans you and your thought process, not mine!
Thanks for your advice on guard dogs and alarm systems but my weapons are sufficient.
PS. something tells me you do not have children Marian...Your right also.Im not paranoid about the safety of my life, my wifes life and the lives of my children at all. Because I can and I will Protect Them by the best means available to me.
        Thank you....
