Neil Heslin on his son who perished in the Newtown, Conn. shooting: "Jesse was my son, but he was my best friend and my buddy too"

Less than a week since the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn. which left 20 young children dead within the walls of their Sandy Hook Elementary School, on Thursday "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes the father of one of the slain victims for a gut-wrenching and candid primetime interview.

Speaking about his son Jesse Lewis, Neil Heslin remembers the six-year-old warmly and fondly:

"Jesse was my son, but he was my best friend and my buddy, too. And I'm just really lost for words. We did everything together," explained Heslin in honest and heart-breaking fashion. "He had so many favorite spots where he'd go, the diner in town here, the grocery store for his bagel or muffin in the morning, the Misty Vale Deli where he'd go to get his sandwich in the morning, also before school and his snack. I'm lost for words."

This evening Heslin will face the unenviable task of burying his son, the precise act most people agree no parent should ever have to go through. The fact that it's happening during the holidays makes it that much more difficult:

"My little boy said something the night before to me. And he said, Dad, this is going to be the best Christmas ever. And he was going on about it. And I said, Jesse ... we'll make it the best we can. And I don't have much family. So it's kind of a quiet time for me. And he makes - made Christmas happy for me and joyful and he made it what it was," Heslin told Piers Morgan. "The next day, this tragedy happened. It occurred. And I thought to myself, 'boy, was he wrong about that.'"

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 as Heslin and Morgan talk further about the unspeakable tragedy that has shocked the nation, and encouraged many to call for stiffer gun legislation.

I would appreciate it if you would convene interested folks from Newtown, CT, including councilmen, parents, teachers, etc., to explore the idea of designating Newtown to be the first gun-free town in the US, as an authentic tribute to the living memory of those deceased by the recent horrific events. I believe that this unfortunate event provides a rare opportunity for this town to initiate a trail blazing initiative to occur in the US and to change the debate on gun control in a powerful way.

Yes Piers, lets do that. Lets make Newtown into the first gun free places in the us. These kids deserve to be honoured, so we will allways remember how they changed our world. I,m living in belgium, but a frequent visitor to the us. This country is driven by fear, by fear they arm themselves. We have to change that. Piers, you,ve got a lot of critical responses. Don,t let that discourage you. We,who applaud the excellent work you did over the past week, will allways back up. Don,t go back to Britain, you are most needed here. I like your style. You are passionate. We need people like you! Keep focussed, even when other media won,t talk anymore about Sandy Hook in a couple of weeks. Never forget 20 young lives and their teachers .

You folks are tied emotionally to the Conn. event and without thinking far out into the future (or maybe not so far out) when our govt. turns against us. It has happened before, The War of Norrthern Agression (Civil War), the Revolutionary War against King George III, in France against the King, etc. The 2nd Amend. was written for a reason. I have always considered myself as part of the Militia. I was trained during the Korean War. I am 81 but my long distance eye sight is 20 20. If we are overrun, I'll take a few of the B_ _ _ _ _ _'s with me.

The interview brought tears to my eyes for this poor fathers loss but to read this post is alarming and I need to ask this question.

Are you guys proposing making it illegal to own a gun in this town? Placing a big sign GUN FREE TOWN.
Might are well put a huge target on the rest of the kids. Do you people actually think some monster is going to read the sign and pic another town to kill people? This is most unrealistic thing I've ever heard posted on the net.

What a good idea. Our children are part of the world. All children need to be protected.
Mr Morgan why are you not getting mad asking questions about 175 children killed?

"'Are we,' Obama asked on Sunday, 'prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?' It's a valid question. He should apply it to the violence he is visiting on the children of Pakistan."

A Poem for the Children of Sandy Hook Elementary School – I hope this poem was written with the obvious understanding that Adam Lanza was not the shooter. Adam Lanza's death certificate is from New Hampshire on December 13, 2012. Adam Lanza lived in Connecticut. Why doesn't the father go after the 2nd shooter that he had to have seen on national tv the first day before they ordered that off the air? Wouldn't you? Every parent would want to know exactly what happened yet these actors could care less they just keep repeating the same lines "get rid of guns." Know no matter what you think of this case ask yourself why this father would go public against guns when he has to have knowledge of all the evidence in case & none of it points to Adam Lanza! If this was your child wouldn't you be screaming for a united states senate investigation and want ALL the evidence? Yes you would we all would, therefore again his behavior shows his true colors. I will never understand how these amateur actors were brought into the game to play the part of grieving parents. It actually scares me more that this show is so obviously fake. Please wake up sheep – this is why they want your guns & will stop at nothing to take them. Why? What is around the corner that they are rushing in to steal your guns? Be alert they didn't get the guns so there will be more shootings until the sheep wake up! Hurry sheep Barry's on his way to Mars. LOL

Are you proposing that legal gun owners turn in their guns to the authorities? How are we going to remove the guns from the hands of the criminals and those that dont abide by the law?

      December 21, 2012 at 10:26 am | Report abuse | Reply
      • Jerry

Lets not forget that schools are already gun free zones and no one can walk onto the grounds with a gun legally. How about we look at it from a different prospective and consider arming more people who can actually protect not only themselves but other citizens. Just stop and think for a minute and consider the outcome if someone at that school had a gun. Im not claiming those poor innocent lives would have been spared but there is the possibility right? I understand your side and perspective as well. A gun free town sounds like a perfect environment for criminals to thrive in. For comparison, lets setup a study. We can designate one town where no one has a gun and another where most of its citizens have guns. Then lets designate criminals to select which town they will attack. Can anyone guess the outcome?

Everything that is being talked about sounds heartfelt and honest in the attempt to ensure that what happened in Newtown, Conn. again. But if you want to do something that is a tribute to all those who died in that school in Newtown, then start talking about weapon security! Along with the background checks and mental issue checks, put in place a law that allows local and state law enforcement to inspect the security of weapons in gun owner homes. Ensure that hand guns & rifles have trigger locks and or are locked up in gun cabinets. Give tickets for violations with progressively higher fines for repeat offences and eventual loss of gun privilages for the lack of weapon security. A legally owned weapon can only be used in a crime when those we the people who desire to not have access to any weapons, are let to have access by the lack of any or slack weapon security in the home! Do the math people, get background checks in place, restrict access to the large capacity magazines and secure those weapons at home with trigger locks and or secure them in gun lockers. Those pretty gun cabinets with glass fronts are sure pretty for a weapons display but do little for security, use trigger locks and remember that the next life lost my come from your unsecured weapons at home!

These school shootings are not about guns, its about the "WHY we don't have security at these schools to protect our children" . Ultimately, it was the FAILURE OF THE SCHOOL to protect the children under there watch. AND THAT IS WHAT WE SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON. WE have enough laws to do the job, we need SECURITY in our schools so that NOT ANYONE can just walk in and kid nap one of our kids or kill one of our kids.....SECURITY and PROTECTION is what we expect from OUR SCHOOLS when we send our children there EVERYDAY......!!!!!!!

Recently was in Texas, couldn,t travel on public transport, because my white friends thought that was far too dangerous. I went of course and enjoyed the compagny of Hispanics and Afro Americans commutering to work. You are a country driven by fear and a great lack of education. I,m sorry to say so.

With due respect mike b, if we get armed guard in schools what about shopping mall, churches, mosque, park and even the school buses that our kids jump on???
I think apart from making very tough law against ppl and criminals that Are in possession of illegal unregistered guns will should adopt California 10 rounds magazine policy and allow competent sane ppl that feel and demonstrated they are capable of carrying conceal weapon legally to do so.
Just imagine if somebody competent send just a round back to the dude that killed those young kids .... Am sure we would be talking about a different story with his behind in jail .

I believe the recent event in Newton is tragic and I feel deeply for the victims.

Despite this however, I must ask for reason when efforts to keep these episodes from happening again turn to gun control. If one reviews the history of these events, firearms were only used approximately 60% of the time, and, when firearms are used, the weapons of choice have mainly been handguns and shotguns, not assault rifles. So why waste federal taxpayer monies in an effort which will not solve the problem? Isn't such just creating a false sense of security?

As a neurosurgeon who has had the difficult and unpleasant task on more than one occasion to be the bearer of news to families that their loved one has suffered a permanent and – in too many cases – fatal injury to their brain as a result of a gunshot wound, I applaud Piers Morgan's passionate debate and call to action. This country's addiction to guns is no more no less than an illness, an addiction that in other civilized countries would not be tolerated and for good reason. There is simply no reasonable justification for the public to have access to weapons that should belong only in the hands of the military or law enforcement. We pay a price for this folly that sadly has brought about the senseless slaughter of little children whose families are condemned to mourn their loss for the rest of their lives.

Great point anonymous, with due respect to ppl that just lost loved one. It's a shame that ppl can't see beyond and truly understand the issue. To a parent does it matter if a loved one is lost by a shotgun, handgun or AK47, a lost is a lost and it cut deep.i am a proud responsible legal gun owner and to say the truth out of the 11000 death from gun last year what % is robbery, home invasion, gang& drug related.?? Simple solution, restrict no of bullets in magazine like in California, extensive punishment to ppl or criminals that in possession of illegal guns or commit crime with guns, more support to mentally affected folks and a buy back of illegal guns in the society.
Majority of legal gun owners have it to protect themselves and their families as well as for sporting.
Legal gun owner rarely go about doing such rampage killing.

I have listened to all the arguments....BUT I still believe that the SCHOOL was ultimately responsible fro the safety and security of those children.....ARE we really just going to send our kids to school KNOWING they are going to get killed....NO WE DON'T...WE send our kids to school knowing and EXPECTING the school to PROTECT and keep our children SAFE>>>>
ASK yourself this question...ARE YOU POSITIVE THAT THE SCHOOL IN YOUR HOMETOWN HAS ENOUGH SECURITY AND PROTECTIVE MEASURES to defend the children who go to your school. Can anyone just walk in to your school anytime without being challenged at the front door...LETS GET REAL....

YOU probably just don't notice with your head buried in your cell phone. AND for those of you that haven't noticed lately, we do live in a free society and the price of freedom is at a premium cost...JUST ask the military that protect America everyday...Yes Virginia, the USA is at war with people who would deny us the freedom we predominately take for granted everyday....

Okay armed guard in schools, on buses and play ground you best email your house rep to increase tax for the wealthy bcos I don't know how we going to afford that when we cutting cost on education, police and what have us.

Piers I applaude you for bringing the issue up and speaking firmly about it. 2nd Amendment never meant giving people's gun rights over taking away somebody else' right to live, especially those defenseless, innocent children's lives. Anyone claims their gun rights behind 2nd amendment is SENSELESS COWARD! Please, Americans are better than this! 2nd Amendment was established more than two hundred years ago. The situation has changed so much. We don't want our people to have arm race on our motherland. Mr. Lincoln would say NO to guns too.

The only reason this is a FREE COUNTRY is the fact that there is no other nation in this world that would launch a ground offensive in this country to try to take it over. The Russian president Nikita Khrushchev once said: :Russia would never think of invading the US because there is a gun behind every tree". Guns have made this country free and our military fights everyday with GUNS to keep us free and if the people in this country lose the right to keep and bear arms, YOU WILL be living like they do in NORTH KOREA...With a dictator telling you what to do. I feel very sad for the chidren that were lost last Friday and have a lot of sympathy for Newtown, BUT, we cannot let this incident take away the rights that we have fought for and our military have fought for to keep this country free...

If Mr.Morgan is right, and more guns are NOT the solution, and Mr. Morgan wants to get rid of "guns" then we should start by disarming the police officers. Police meet fire power with fire power and all the American people want is the same right the police officers have when the bad guys show up at there front door. I say meet the criminals at the door with relatively the same amount of fire power they may have in there hands. More guns SAVE lives than take a life. If you want the real facts, go to http://rense.com/general76/mths.htm and find out for your self. Mr. Morgan does not have a clue...Mr. Morgan probably lives in a well protected condo, with guards all around him, a limo driver and a body guard that follows him around everywhere. I, myself, live in the real world where self protection is a MUST. If you don't protect your self, then, who will? If your going to wait for the police to show up, I will mark it down to send flowers to your funeral.....

i think you should the government, state police,Nra,board of education.why?for the lost of your son.the government should never have given individuals the right to bear arms...President Kennedy has a plan to disarm that the government never uses, the state police had no right issuing permits to citizens instead the state of police should have been keeping the crime rate down so people could stay safe.THe Nra should not made assault weapons for the public...they only wanted to get rich by having them sold in gun stores and pawn shops. The education board should have hadreal detectors, door monitors, and security guards in the building...were is the protection in schools..no classroom cameras..please sue...your son can never be replace...please don'tallow them to hide behind mental health...this young man had enough sense to destroy his computer so the police couldn't get evidences...that tells me he was very intelligent...not a sickness...someone is lying..just think about it..

How can I help the people of Newtown, CT? I want to do something but I don't know what. If I could send them something through the mail, what would be a good thing to send them? Any ideas? I really want to help. I have been watching the news everyday and I can't get this tragedy off my mind.

Hey Piers, keep up the fight it is worth it ! So maybe you should regularly list the names of people that are murdered by guns in the US. show us a photo and tell their story.

I consider myself lucky to be Canadian as we have very strict gun regulations.

With all the money and guns it has the higest bipolar rate in the world, higest cancer in the world, higest obeasity, higest dibaties and higest autisam in the world. Bulling has become this country's behavior .... Just look what they do to samaller and weaker countries of the world. Maybe to much gun powder corodes healthy cells.

To Andrea from Chicago. I believe that Neil Heslin ia a single dad who probably didn't cook very much. Maybe he could benefit from a week of free cooked meals or something like that....I am a caterer but I live on the west coast. I would love to go in person to cook for these families as I wish I lived close by. When I heard his story I just bursted out in tears.

This man really needs to go back under the rock he crawled out from under in England. I wonder why he does not mention that most of the individuals that performed these horrific acts were all doped up on pharmaceuticals? Maybe because on CNN, every other commercial is for said pharmaceutical companies. Peirs, this is not Europe. We will not just turn over our guns just because you decide to go on a crusade. The 2nd amendment makes all the other amendments possible. The founding fathers knew this. They did not fear poeple owning guns. They feared that if a government became tyrannical, said government could be removed BECAUSE the people had guns. Fact is, if someone would have been armed in that school, this would not have happened.

Why do you think that sicko did not attack a police station? Because he KNEW they were armed. He wanted to hurt the maximum amount of people and he knew he could do it in a school. What this dweeb did not tell you is that since the ban on guns in GB, violent crime has skyrocketed. Why? Because the criminals know that no one is armed. Ban guns in an American city and look what happens to crime every time. It goes up. ALOT.

The bottom line is that this guy is on the lowest plane of hell. His punishment for eternity is beyond our capacity to understand. Pure evil, but to think that disarming the 99.9% of responsible gun owners is the answer is insanity and will never work. Even if they try, there will be millions of guns hid in all manner of places. A huge black market will ensue.

Placing well trained and armed teachers in schools would prevent this because these sicko cowards would not even have went there in the first place.

You are absolutely right Vicky, I couldn't agree more. Piers, please keep this discussion going. We all need to step up and not let this be forgotten. Something needs to be done about guns in our country and it needs to be done now. This should have never happened and it should never be allowed to happen again. We cannot turn our schools into armed camps.

Although we have a very difficult time dealing with loss – especially of children – Jesse expressing that this was going to be the best Christmas! I have been around 2 people – my mother-in-law & my daughter – who both talked to loved ones who had passed away, less than a week, before they passed away – cancer at 63 & previously undiagnosed acute cardiac arrythmia at 30.
( The day before Roberta ended up in the hospital, she told me she wanted to see God !)
Jesse is going to be having the best Christmas! – in Heaven, with Jesus!
We're the ones who have to deal with the loss & learn how to carry on without them, as people like John Walsh has!

Piers, can you please post the whole video clip? Neil Heslin's pain was almost unbearable to watch, but the dignity, grace and simplicity with which he spoke has touched so many people. Unfortunately, the posted videos are all truncated and therefore his remarks about Christmas being about all the people who have helped him and the community, all the compassion the world has shown, were cut out of any posted version. He has impressed so many people, and I think his comments about Christmas need to be shared.

I usually love Piers nightly show but I think it was very morbid to have Mr. Neil Heslin's interview on his show last night. It was very apparent that this poor man who just lost his 6 year old son was extremely medicated and was slurring his words. Piers should have kept his interview to a few minutes and not let him ramble on for so long. There is a point where the media should not interview these people who have suffered such an unbelievable loss. I really think Piers is dwelling on this subject too much and needs to concentrate on other topics and let these people grieve.

Why, because he actually has a plan that will reduce the amount of these killings? Whats your alternative to prevent this from happening again, a gun ban? How will that remove guns from the criminals? Please, enlighten me because I dont see your point at all.

    I agree Jerry,
These peoples plan is to ban guns and it will not happen again, create more gun free zones because criminals read the signs and find other places to kill innocent people. Thinking like this makes me want to throw up. Plans like that are the very reason these 20 kids are dead instead on being protected by trained personal. These people are with the police that are 20 minutes away protecting these wacked out killers. This is there idea to protect the kids when they return from xmas break. I say take action now and protect the kids at any cost. I 100% agree with the NRA's proposal and it needs to be done NOW!

The interview with Neil Heslin was powerful, absolutely gut wrenching, heartbreaking.
I am Australian. I did live in the U.S for ten years (1985-1995) and have two U.S born sons. During that period – there was a shooting exchange between two adults who had run into the pre-school that my children were attending – the police shot dead a gunman who was in a boat yard only one block away from where I was living and I worked with two people who had been shot and survived (one in the stomach and the other in the foot). What I found astonishing is that these two shooting victims continued to firmly believe in the necessity for guns.
Here in Australia, I do not know anyone who even owns a gun, let alone anyone who has been shot. Sadly, the Second Amendment has proved fatal for far too many innocent people.

A Poem for the Children of Sandy Hook Elementary School
    Rafey Habib

    Next time you shave
or put on lipstick, look beneath
    that deepening mirror:

    the wailing
of mothers half a world away
beneath the cries of this mother, bereaved,
    the anguish of ragged children

    beneath the smiling face
    of Emilie
    who lies dead, slumped
    over friends
in this little town, where the world
    would live.

    She was
    to be
    an artist, drawing
    lives.

    Artists. Teachers. Future worlds,
    Unworlded.

And all that remains is words,

    Pictures of the dead.
    Drawn by children.

    Their cries do not reach
the throne of God but are stuck in their throats.

Next time you trim your eyebrows
or apply your eye shadow, look deep into
    your mirrors to find
not “evil” or God but selves we slid into
    - undisciplined (screwed-up) kid,
    Gun-loving (screwed-up) mother -

Who let this happen every single day
    both here and half a world away;
Who pretend this disease is freedom.

I really feel as though we are being bamboosaled (spelling?). I think our gov't is just trying to get all our guns but it is never going to happen. Just my opinion, but America...wake up...stop being so nieve. Have you noticed all the media attention to gun shootings just about every day? This is nothing new but the media is putting attention on these shootings to scare people into believing that guns are bad and we shouldn't be allowed to have guns. Guns aren't bad...the people killing others are who need to be stopped!

  72. Tasty Vapes Vape Shop

I operate a vape store submission site and we have had a posting from a vape store in the United States that likewise offers CBD products. A Calendar month afterwards, PayPal has contacted use to claim that our account has been limited and have asked us to take out PayPal as a payment solution from our vape store directory. We do not offer for sale CBD product lines like CBD oil. We only provide internet marketing professional services to CBD companies. I have visited Holland & Barrett– the UK's Major Health and wellness Store and if you take a good look, you will witness that they supply a surprisingly substantial series of CBD goods, primarily CBD oil and they also happen to take PayPal as a settlement method. It appears that PayPal is administering twos sets of rules to many different companies. As a result of this constraint, I can no longer take PayPal on my CBD-related site. This has limited my payment choices and now, I am heavily reliant on Cryptocurrency payments and straightforward bank transfers. I have consulted with a lawyer from a Magic Circle law office in London and they explained that what PayPal is undertaking is definitely unlawful and discriminatory as it should be applying a systematic benchmark to all firms. I am yet to talk with yet another legal representative from a US law firm in London to see what PayPal's legal position is in the United States. For the time being, I would be highly appreciative if anybody here at targetdomain could provide me with alternative payment processors/merchants that work with CBD companies.
