Clips From Last Night: Tom Arnold on the gun debate; Joe Jackson on Michael's children

As much of the nation continues to debate the polarizing topic of guns, and firearm legislation, on Wednesday evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" invited Tom Arnold to share his candid perspective, and personal insight.

Having grown up "hunting with my grandpa," and citing it as "one of the best experiences of my life," the actor and comedian says there's a vast difference between sport and unregulated killing:

"We didn't see anybody out there with military-style assault weapons. And that's where you draw the line because those guys - you know, if I was out hunting tomorrow and a guy - some kid shows up with one of those guns, we'd freak out," Arnold told Piers Morgan. "That's not part of sport or part of the culture. You know, they're posers. If they want to be in the military join the freaking military. You can't dress up like a military guy and put on a Purple Heart and walk around, and act like you're in the military."

Referencing AR-15's, the specific type of weapon used in several of the recent mass killing episodes, the 53-year-old Iowa native describes what he sees as their specific designation:

"It's those crazy people that need to blow up meat," says Arnold, of those with military-style assault weapons. "That's all those guns do is explode meat. They're not for hunting. There's not for any other purpose."

Also on Wednesday's program, Morgan welcomed Joseph Jackson for a rare, exclusive face to face interview.

The musician and talent manager often described as being the patriarch of the famed Jackson family, Joseph spoke candidly about two of his grandchildren, the two left behind by his most famous child, Michael:

"Well, Paris is - even Michael said, she's a piece of work, you know, because, most girls are hard to raise," said Jackson, speaking about Michael's daughter. "Piers, they are hard to raise. They are more harder (sic) than boys. But she's a nice girl. And most girls takes to the father anyway."

During Wednesday's conversation, Morgan also asked Jackson about remembering his son through his grandchildren:

"When you see them, does it take you back to when your kids were young? Do you see Michael in them?" asked the host.

"In Blanket I do," he revealed, speaking of the late pop-singer's youngest child. "In Blanket, I see Michael. Yes. But they are good kids. They are being handled well. And Katherine [Michael's mother] is really looking after those kids. And they love their grandma. Yes, they really love her. And they obeys her (sic), too."

Watch the clip and listen to the interviews as Arnold hopes to clarify misconceptions about firearms and those living in rural areas, while Jackson explains how he takes a different approaching with being a grandparent, than he did as a father.

Tom Arnold is a voice of reason, here and one that I think most Americans can get on board with. There's a vast difference between those people who live in rural, isolated areas who understand and respect guns, handle and use them for hunting and protection purposes and those people who just want an opportunity - any opportunity - to violently annihilate something. And he's right about kids being kids and their propensity to get into mischief, so parents need to be on the look-out. When grown adults behave like this, that's what solid background checks are for; keep guns out of the hands of hotheads who act like kids with no impulse control.

Thanks again, Piers, for keeping this conversation going.

I think that the individual that is contemplating to purchase a weapon, needs to go in person to the police station, pay $5.00 (for Florida) ask to provide him with a background check in writing; Police Stations provides background check for a individual that is doing a lease, to show the landlord; landlord has the right to ask for it before signing the lease.
Why not when purchasing a GUN?
This will be a sure background check, with this done by the police station the individual would be allowed to purchase a weapon

Dear Maria, do your research before you post comments from now on. You should know that the fbi already requires gun distributors to have a background check performed before every weapon sale. Will guns end up in bad hands? Of course they will. That's like saying just because drugs are illegal, no one will posess them. Your a classic idiot American that doesn't know whatt they're talking about and so quick to jump on the band wagon with all the other morons who think gun violence will stop. Do us all a favor and shut up.

Can't believe piers is still beating this dead horse. Tom Arnold is an idiot. An Ar-15 is a .22 caliber. It leaves a very small hole and doesn't explode meat. Honestly, where do you find these people. Piers, why don't you head back across the pond where you belong. Nobody is going to give up their guns, period. You may have some ignorant people that watch your show like jonuil and believe that crap your shoveling but it ain't gonna happen regardless of how much you all yack. By the number of posts I think everyone else is tired of your crap also.

David is sooooooo wrong to talk bad about Piers. I applaud Piers for trying to get common sense gun control measures in America. Keep up the good work Piers. Only gun enthusiasts and the NRA are against you. They do NOT represent the views of most Americans. And the congressmen that have obviously been bought by the NRA will be voted out of office!

    For assault weapons I say:

    1. Make them illegal to own, and/or make registered owners completely responsible for all damages created by their weapon regardless of who did it. So if it was stolen, it doesn't matter, they are still fully responsible.

    2. Put a high tax on the ammo for assault weapons and use the proceeds to reduce gun proliferation.

Hey Seth, since you are so anxious to take everybody's guns, why don't you run over to all your neighbors and collect their assault rifles tonight. Hurry, no time to waste. Bet you won't cause your scared butt sits behind a computer typing away hoping somebody else will put their life in danger collecting guns. Mighty nice of you. Also, if somebody steals your car and kills people in a chase you should be held liable for murder. You can't think past your nose.

Hey dave, I think I'll just wait until it becomes a felony to own an assault rifle, then the neighbors will anxiously turn them in on their own.

America started in 1873 when Sam Colt produced the "Peacemaker". it was the 1st 6 -shot revolver in .45 Long Colt caliber and was called the great "Equalizer." I won't waste time, America's # 2nd Gun Genius, John MOses Browning,, The 1897 Pump action Shotgun replaced the Double-barreled Coach Gun, Then the Browning Auto-5 the 1st semi-automatic Shothgun, then the 191 .45 acp semi-automatic pistol, then the .50 Caliber M2 Heavy Barrel Machine Gun used world wide to save countless poor people from dictators and Monsters who slaughter people like livestock. I could go on and I don't like AR-15's,, I like a Ruger Mini-14,,same bullet,,gun is steel and an AR-15 is an Aluminum reciever,,climate here don't work with aluminum guns like steel.. I'm hoping this will be a significantly better, sophisticated, productive debate than Morgan's worthless daily drivel.

This idiot thinks the military trained all the soldiers in WWII that saved their sorry asses. When in fact most soldiers already knew how to shoot. Now, they surrendered all their guns to the government and left themselves defenseless. If they get in a bind again I say let them fend for themselves. They will be shooting themselves in the foot because they had no prior experience with firearms. I agree, why is this idiot getting so much airtime and why is he in this country.

I live in a country with gun control ,if my child wants to harm another with a gun he could not even find one, No one i know even wants to own a gun. We have an Army for that! Do you think we care what the rest of the world is thinking,San. You have a awful lot of faith in your government. What happens if you're army is over run. What are you going to do. Don't laugh, there isn't enough space to list all the countries that have been overrun, knife the opposing army. Here in America, we take the responsibility for our country's defense. Imagine if we didn't have a military here and another country decided to come on our shores. People would rush to those areas and quickly give that army a bad case of lead poisoning. If you have any doubt about this, you haven't spent much time here, if at all. So you sit there and feel all smug and comfortable about the fact that you don't know anybody who even wants to own a gun. I'll sit here all smug and comfortable knowing that everyone I know owns a gun and knows how to use it. Just don't call on the USA to come and bail your butt out because the people in your country are to lazy and irresponsible to protect your country, families, and future generations.

Guns don't kill people, bullets do! I don't hear anyone talking about putting severe limitations on the manufacture and sale conditions of ammunition. There may be several thousand different types of guns, but a lot of them use the same type of ammunition. Make it a requirement to have a licence in order to buy bullets, sell them only through authorized government run stores, and keep a database of all purchases. At the same time, put an extremely high sales tax on all ammunition to help out with the deficit. There may be a poorly interpreted "right" to bear arms, but that may not be entirely applicable to bullets. It won't matter how many millions of guns currently exist in the general population when the bullet supply dries up.

In this report by the Department of Justice ( http://www.sas.upenn.edu/jerrylee/research/aw_final2004.pdf ) in 2004, it was found that firearms that fall under 'Assault Weapons Ban' only make up about 2% of gun crime. Further, this FBI report ( http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-11 ) from 2011 shows that rifles, of all kinds including hunting/sport rifles and 'assault rifles,' were used in 323 shootings.

1,694 killings were made with knives, 496 with blunt objects, and *726* killings were made using hands, fists, or feet. The killings made with rifles, including the so called 'assault rifle' are only half as many killings as people physically beaten to death by someone with their bare hands. Further, in 2011, there were a total of 8,583 firearm murders. Rifles, again including hunting rifles and 'assault rifles,' make up only 3.76% of all firearm murders. So, according to those FBI statistics, current proposed weapon bans are, in fact, targeting *the smallest* portion of gun crime in the nation, period. As such, they will have *the smallest* impact possible.

If you want to focus on guns, that's fine. It's a hot debate issue. But at least focus on *real* problem areas that it encompasses, not the smallest possible area for impact.

On the magazine side, most of the proposed bans focus around limiting magazines to 10 rounds. At Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho carried 19 ten and fifteen round magazines. He used 17 of those 19 magazines and fired approx. 170 rounds before killing himself. So, mechanically, the vast majority of the magazines he used already fall in line with the proposed 10 round limit. That did not stop him.

There is no good, simple, easy, or fast solution to this problem. The universal background check is something I agree with. Any ownership transfer of a firearm should have a background to go with it, in my opinion. The system was put into place to prevent known criminals from obtaining firearms from retailers. It has been proven to work. This 2010 NICS report ( http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/2010-operations-report/2010-operations-report-pdf ) stats taht 820,888 transactions were denied from Nov. 30 1998 to Dec. 31, 2010. Checks work, to some degree.

But for anything to really happen, or for people to be safe, a few things need to happen.

First, people need to be responsible for their own safety. This does *NOT* mean people need to be paranoid and fearful. It means they need to be aware and pay attention. People with violent intentions display them with abnormal actions which can easily be watched for.

Secondly, education needs to be presented about the actual mental and emotional cause of these incidents. Along with this, people need to stop using such issues as an *excuse* for what happens. It didn't happen because of these problems, it happened because no one paid attention to these problems.

Third, people need to deal with human nature. Facts are facts. Sometimes, people are just evil.

And lastly, each side of the argument need to act like adults and admit that the extreme answers and solutions proposed on both sides simply will not work. Until people stop dealing with this based on high running emotions and work together, no *real* or effective solution will be found.

    Mr. Morgan:

I respectfully ask if you remember a despot named Adolf Hitler. Do not for one instant think that government cannot turn against its own as witnessed in Germany. My history lessons have taught me that America saved the Brits' bacon during that holocaust.

How far would Hitler have been able to go? What if the Jews had been armed like Americans are? Would they willingly have marched to the ovens? I think not. If we do not learn from history, we are bound to repeat it. Smarten up and see the writing on the wall here.

If Americans surrender their weapons then only the bad guys and the government will have them. This is unacceptable. I do understand that you are sickened by Aurora and Sandy Hook and rightly so but things can get much much worse if we are unable to protect ourselves. My heart bleeds for the families of those children. I have always respected you but on this issue, I do believe you are being obtuse beyond reason. You continuously throw out the high profile cases such as Jennifer Hudson's family and the Aurora and Sandy Hook shootings yet you never have any stats on how many people have saved themselves and their families from intruders.

I did see where one of your interviewees mentioned how alcohol killed more people than guns and you deliberately evaded that conversation. Do some comparison studies on that topic if you are so concerned about lives being lost. How many children every year are killed by people driving under the influence of alcohol.

With all due respect you are beginning to come across as a nut job who is as obsessed as the people who committed these horrible crimes. How bout if we put high voltage electric fences around the schools with an ten foot tall inner fence. An armed guard would be essential to my way of thinking. If we can afford to bomb Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis for over ten years then surely we could afford to hire security and other security measures for our schools.

I am not a right wing nut job but you are in danger of losing all credibility. You are continuing to talk over your guests because you don't appear to really want solutions. You are fixated and need to at least listen to alternative methods of protecting our schools.
