Clips From Friday: Ed Koch on the gun debate; Jennifer Lawrence credits her brothers for her acting career

Less than 24 hours after the former mayor's passing, on Friday evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" paid a special tribute to Ed Koch. Three weeks prior to succumbing to congestive heart failure, the legendary leader of New York City sat down with Piers Morgan in what is believed to be his final formal interview.

Described by the host as being a "true American original," Koch called upon his trademark brand of candor to detail his stance on a myriad of topics, including the "Guns in America" issue:

"I believe we need a constitutional amendment to really address the issue," said Koch, regarding firearm legislation. "Because when we're doing it, as we are currently doing it, a little bit at a time, and then the United States Supreme Court has a tendency to strike down what we do."

Later on the program, Morgan welcomed the return of Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell, as the "Silver Linings Playbook" pair resumed their chat from the previous evening, with the two-time Academy Award nominee revealing her early life aspirations:

"I had a million dreams," said Lawrence. "I was going to be a doctor."

Once Lawrence realized that her future was on the silver screen, it was her siblings that helped in her pursuit:

"It was because of my brothers that I was able to just get the chance," she boasted. "When I wanted to do this when I was 14, my parents weren't going to let me do it. And my brothers called and said, you guys followed us through the World Series. You guys have been all over the country with us. And you would do this for us if it were sports, and this is her baseball diamond. And you have to let her do it."

Watch the clip and listen to the interviews as Russell, who directed Lawrence in "Silver Linings Playbook," explains why he feels that his female lead has "a timeless quality to her."

For more than 100 years the 2nd Amendment was interpreted as to NOT guarantee the right of individuals to bear arms. That interpretation was changed, and look where we are today.

The assault weapons ban was lifted, and look where we are today.

America has the highest gun homicide, suicide, and serious gun injury rates of any 1st world country on the globe.

And now even our schools, churches, malls and theaters are subject to mass carnage.

This isn't a debate, this is ridiculous.

refresh my memory if i’m forgetting something...
has there ever been a supreme court ruling on the 2nd amendment before d.c. & chicago cases??
what authority (or supreme court in what era), as our official national position, interpreted as to “NOT guarantee the right of individuals to bear arms” and when?

Could you please self deport? Nobody likes you. Guess you should eat some worms. I think it is funny that you angered gun lovers in America. I think it is funny that you self deported from England only to try import British ideas over here.

I think guns are ridiculous. But it is nearly as ridiculous for a Brit to dictate politics to Americans. Either get your citizenship here like your buddy Murdoch or politely go home yesterday. You both are as crooked as the Libor rates, but America welcomes everyone to its shores if you have money.

I saw Ted Nugent speaking about guns on the news earlier, and he mentioned how so many people in rural areas own guns just like ones that are used in the mass shootings that we see on the news all the time, and we don't see them walking into an elementary school and slaughtering little children. I absolutely think it is a mental health issue. Look at how many people in our country are on some kind of medication for a mental health problem! There's something else that's fundamentally wrong, and these mass shootings are a symptom of all of this. I am registered in the green party and voted for Barack Obama in the last two elections. I am not a right wing gun nut. All this talk about how many rounds we should have per magazine is just ridiculous. The real question is what's wrong with our society that is causing these mass shootings.

Why is it that Wayne LaPierre is not allowed to change his mind over the course of 14 years, but liberals have no problem when Barack obama changes his mind on gay marriage, keeping Gitmo open, war, drones, etc?

I am curious why we seem to have so many people with PTSD these days.
Our grandparents went to war in the 1940's, many for years at a time, and I don't think I heard about so many mental issues. Did our grandfathers handle the stress better, keep it inside, or what?

you are not legally allowed oversized clips and all people are required a background search and if you are asking for
a restricted permit for handguns or whatever the rules are way more stringent. i hope you guys find a reasonable

I used to watch and enjoy Larry King. When Piers took over I watched him too but not because of his personality. I wanted to hear the people he interviewed and was facinated how he interupted them at times. Once he got on this ban guns in America kick I lost interest in him completely as a host. I don't watch him anymore unless its about his attack on guns and I find him idiotic. Just like I watched Howard Stern to see what stupid thing he was going to say next.
Maybe CNN could give more foreigners talk shows to disarm America. I think Lil Kim from China and Ahmadinejad from Iran might be interested.

The legislation is dead on arrival in the senate, then the debate will be over ,and then we can maybe get to the real problem people ,especially mentally ill people, not guns, then maybe we can talk about that. I know piers is staying for now , but after the legislation falls, so will his ratings.

I don't how focussing on mental health is going to solve the gun problem. Most of the time, the first sign that there is something seriously wrong with a shooter's state of mind is after the event. What's going to happen? Is every socially awkward, loner teenager going to be psychologically assessed and locked away in case they get hold of a gun? Wouldn't it make more sense to remove weapons, rather than individuals before they have actually committed a crime? The only way to stop guns being purchased by the mentally ill is to psychologically evaluate everyone before letting them by a gun. Of course that won't stop the common situation of people taking guns from family members, so once again, it brings us back to just getting rid of the guns to solve the problem.

What all of you are failing to talk about is the unfounded fear that a lot of you think will happen...fear perpetrated upon the fearful white mainly by the rhetorical terrorists on the far right; that there will be a race war. No other race can even conceive of such a thing happening. They want high capacity magazines for just that reason...to kill as many of "them" as they can in the event of such a thing happening.

Wow! Your ignorance is appalling! Once again, this has nothing to do with race. This is about our federal government sticking its nose where it doesn't belong, Period. Congress and the President would be doing us all a favor if they stayed out of our homes and worked on the economy and debt crisis they have created and continue to perpetuate.

There are crimes being committed every day in America. There are more than 300 million people living in the US now. It seems to be that many married couples have failed to stay together for the good of their children. This leaving many children growing up alone without a father to teach him and support him against problems. The children feel their father must not love them to leave them alone and this can cause rebellion and the need to fill that spot with another. They learn on the streets, I believe America's loss of our Christian churces and their teachings are becoming in the past. So our values and what is right or wrong are changing. Where can we make the most impact to get our families back on course. Maybe an incentive to young people to stay married. Shouldn't be teaching young women to have children before getting married by rewarding them with FREE money which increases with each child. Crazy we reward that behaviour! Kids don't know what is a normal way of living if they haven't experienced it. I would like to see the first lady work on the teen pregnancy and hopefully the president may find some way to stop the gangs that are getting young boys into them by usually having them kill as initiation into the groups. These kids don't have a chance unless our government realizea how serious this problem is large cities like :LA and Chicago. These youngsters are praying for help. Most of these gangs are dealing with money. If we can send soldiers into Afganistan to help those people from harm, why don't our own American boys deserve it? How many of them have to die? I believe our guns used for self defense have prevented many more deaths than they have caused.

So airplanes are the shining example of gun free zones? I seem to remember, not too long ago, a few guys and a couple of gun free planes killing far more people in a shorter period of time than any man with any gun could have. Maybe if a few people on that plane had had guns there would be a few thousand Americans alive today.

    February 5, 2013 at 2:57 am | Report abuse | Reply
  25. Crystal

Bottom line Piers, you don't have to "understand". Why don't we have regulators on our cars preventing us from going over 85? That is the fastest legal speed limit in the country. Why does anyone "need" a car that goes faster than that? They don't, but they ought to have the power to choose. That is what this is all about. The power to choose. If you don't like the AR-15 or magazines with more than 10 rounds, don't buy them! The rest of us law-abiding citizens may want them whether for home defense or just because we get our jollies from having big guns and lots of bullets. It doesn't really matter; we ought to have the power to choose. It is the Bill of "Rights" after all, not the Bill of "Needs".
You love to quote gun violence statistics but what about other forms of violence? Bad people will do bad things and in the absence of a gun they will use what they can. A knife, ax, fist, chemicals, rope, plane...hypothetically, lets say we ban the AR-15. The next shooting takes place with a 9mm hand gun. Will we ban those to? Where will we draw the line?
No, I don't believe that the military is going to come into our homes and steal our guns. I do however think that if certain guns or magazines are banned, and someone chooses not to turn theirs over, if the day ever comes that that person is in a situation where they need to defend themselves and the cops come to do the investigation, they will find their private property seized and themselves in jail.
Why do you want the only people who have guns to be the criminals who will get them regardless of any law?
The tentacles of the government need to be cut back quite a bit. I don't need to be told what light bulbs to use, what gas mileage to get, what size soda to drink or what size magazine to carry. Instead of a $1 light bulb I have to use the $5 one. Instead of a steel frame car, I have to compromise my safety in a piece of light weight plastic. Instead of 1 cup, lid, and straw I have to buy 2. Instead of carrying one magazine with what I determine to be enough bullets, I have to carry 3. The law of unintended consequences bites us in the butt time and time again.
ALL WE WANT IS TO BE LEFT ALONE!!!
