Donny Deutsch on Michelle Obama at the Oscars: "As far as I'm concerned, she was an uninvited guest"

With the ice having melted at the famed Vanity Fair after-party, and Hollywood's biggest winners likely still nursing celebratory hangovers, on Monday evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" reviewed the night that was in Hollywood, including the hosts more than 30 Red Carpet interviews.

Although Piers Morgan did chat with everyone from Sally Field to Amy Adams, there was one stunning woman whom he wasn't able to chat with: Michelle Obama.

As the 85th Academy Awards drew to a close, the First Lady shocked viewers and celebrities alike, appearing from Washington, D.C. via satellite to crown "Argo" the year's top film. But did Mrs. Barack Obama have a place at the Oscars?

Guest Donny Deutsch didn't think so:

"From my vantage point, absolutely not," said the advertising executive and television personality. "As far as I'm concerned, she was an uninvited guest. Now what I mean by that is, you have to give the consumer, the viewer, the ultimate respect. They have tuned in to watch movie stars, to watch movies. And all of a sudden, politics is thrown at them."

Joining Deutsch and Morgan live, "The New York Times" correspondent Jodi Kantor surmised that the First Lady's Academy Award cameo is a sign she's playing the proverbial long game:

"It's almost like this sort of Michelle Obama charm offensive strategy," said the author of the best-selling book "The Obamas." "What they're trying to do is portray this woman who's disconnected from politics because of course the paradox of being First Lady is that you are most politically powerful when you appear in some way non-political."

Watch the clips, and listen to the interviews, and draw your own conclusion about Michelle Obama presenting an Oscar. Was she, as Deutsch said, "an univited guets?" Or, as Kantor claimed, thinking long term?

Hey Donnie if you didn't want to see Michelle you should have used your remote. Nicholson said a few words like all the other presenters. he Wasn't there to entertain you for the night. It was a.night to see all the celebrities.Michelle Obama is a celebrity and deserved to be a part of the oscars. I commend the people who thought of the idea.
    Donnie, get a Life!

I would much rather see Michelle any day over Jack. By the way, the service men and women were not Marines guards. They were service men and women who were dress in there their formal military dress that's worn when attending a formal dinner. Holloywood has made a ton of money making movies off of the service of these brave men and women...

She is First Lady which is supposed ot be above trashy Hollywood, but she has lowered the position to that level. She is desperate for attention. Stop dancing like a fool on my TV and stop crashing the Oscars. Get some class!

Spare us the fake outrage please.

You know very well that there's nothing this first lady could do to make you like or respect her. Your biases and prejudices completely blind you to the terrific wife, mother and first lady she is and all the wonderful qualities she embodies.

In your mind she'll never measure up to some phony standard you've manufactured and set to keep you from facing the real reason you won't ever give her a chance or like her.

It'll always be more convenient to find and cling to the silliest and most bizarre things to hate about Mrs Obama – to cover for what really motivates your hate of a perfectly lovely woman – than to face up to and finally begin to deal with your own sad, small mind and world.

So, did Laura Bush "lower herself" when she appeared at the Oscars as First Lady? How about when Reagan did it as President?

I so agree with Julie. Am tired of seeing both she and "him" on TV. They're both seeking attention – when they need to take care of the job they were unfortunately given for a second time! Instead, they like the limelight! My friends and I were appalled when we saw her come on at the Oscars!

I've lost all respect for this woman, she's not displaying the type of class and demure behavior that I'd expect from a First Lady. She's desperate for attention, although she's got the entire nation paying attention to her. And I'm tired of her showing off her arms, we got it you work out, now please cover up.

Bush 41 wife looked liked his mother. Nancy Reagan looked malnourished. Those women (or crows) couldn't hold Michelle Obama's used tampons.

First of all....Ms. Julie! Our BEAUTIFUL and CLIASSY FIRST LADY has more CLASS than you've ever imagined! Now, for you to sit and hide behind your computer and talk some shish about Mrs. Obama is very comical! You've JUST categorized yourself as being a HATER, CLASSLESS, JEALOUS and UNEDUCATED. When you can WALK in Mrs Obama's shoes then you can talk. Get over it..she's our FIRST LADY and for goodness sake give her the RESPECT she deserves! Please get educated before your post non-sense like this. Thank you!

She is the First lady of the United States and does not belong on some of these TV shows, I almost died when I saw her with Jimmy Fallon, him in a wig, her trying to copy his moves, give me a break. She is a women who holds many Degree's and is selling herself short in my eyes. It's time to cut ties with Hollywood, the election is over, move on to something a little more fulfilling, like going to a soup kitchen, find a women's shelter, plant another garden, but please stop this nonsense, she looks ridiulous. As for the remote it was the last 5min. of the show, she was an uninvited guess in my home, if she was to have any part in the Oscar's it should have been made known, so we could have switched channels.

I agree. Michelle is so full of herself. So is the President. It was disgusting. Our country needs a leader not a narcissist, a golfer, a star, a celebrity. I think that since they have only a few years left, they want to hob knob as much as possible. After this, the fan fare will be gone!

Rita. Donny is right. Michelle reminded me of the movie 1984. Where big brother is everywhere. I can't see Jacqueline Kennedy doing something like that. She is not a celebrity, she's the First Lady and politics at the Oscars has no place. We all know though, that the Obama's are chums with the stars, but there's a time a place for everything.

Donny you are ab right on this one - this is Hollywood and its viewed by movie lovers all over the world and it was so cool to see Jack on the stage only to be interupted by Michelle. What was that about!! It was the wrong place at the wrong time. She went on and on about the arts or whatever, it lost the fun tone that was anticipated with seeing Jackon stage. It was a complete waste of $$ for an uninvited and inappropriate appearance.

Hollywood is entertainment. The Oscars are international. The White House is politics.
I reside in another country. I am not an American, nor do I aspire to be. Your comment re 1% is your own limited perception. JV and Ken, Thanks for addressing the comment for what it's worth.
All I’m saying is that it would be nice to enjoy the evening of entertainment without the White House on camera. When we want to tune into MO sightings we will do so…We just saw her ‘mom dance’ with Jimmy Fallon, and we know that she will be on Dr. Oz today. With all the economic challenges we face internationally, another perception was that it was a waste of coin. Broaden your perspective.

Oh for crying out loud, get over it!

The First Lady was asked by the Academy folks and she graciously accepted. She was beamed in to the show for a few minutes surrounded by very thrilled service members who she chose to share the moment with. Just look at all the faces of the service members, they were elated.

Who listens to Donny Deutsch anyway? The guy is an envious, slimy wannabe who's always looking to attack the Obamas anyway he can.

Where was Donny Deutsch just 3 short weeks ago when Bill Clinton not only intruded upon the Golden Globes as a presenter, but invaded the after-parties too drawing attention away from the stars on their big night? Not a peep from Deutsch or any of the other Clinton kiss-ups, but heaven forbid Mrs Obama gets asked to do the honors at the Oscars! The Obama derangement syndrome from the Donny Deutsch's of the world is ridiculous.

Like it or not Donny, they asked her because they wanted her there and she frankly elevated the Oscars with her lovely, dignified and powerful presence. Her short message was spot on and successfully communicated the importance of the arts particularly its impact on American children.

Michelle Obama has been nothing short of an absolutely amazing and wonderful First Lady and role model and even in the face of such unprecedented hostility and such vicious and unprovoked attacks on her and her family, she remains incredibly gracious, warm and generous.

So many of us admire her so much and remain in such awe of her.

East Coast, or West Coast Politics, is what we saw in Hollywood with this last go round for Oscar. Best Director Steven Spielberg, biggest snub for Best Director Ben Affleck, Best Picture, Lincoln(Spielberg),or Argo (Affleck). With an invitation to the First lady I think someone was almost sure Lincoln would come out on top. SURPRISE, the best guy won. Like the Golden Globes when Bill Clinton walked out to pay homage to Spielberg's, Lincoln. Enjoyed the Oscar's up until that point, then I felt like I was taken advantage of, she is not what I was looking for in the show. Leave Hollywood to their own form of Politics, and step aside.

        Huh?
Your rambling makes no sense at all. You do know that they're all liberals? Spielberg, Affleck the whole bunch. They all supported and voted for President Obama and all their movies were shown at the White House and enjoyed by the entire first family according to Mrs Obama.

So who exactly are you pitting against the Obamas this time seeing as every single person you mentioned is an Obama supporter and couldn't possibly be plotted against. What you're doing is called desperately grasping dear – and it's terribly pathetic since you're all over the place with this one.

And for people who hate Hollywood chockfull of liberals and Obama supporters, you sure seem to enjoy their offerings but like everything else wingnutty, you still think you get to tell them who and how they run their Hollywood events.

They chose to invite our magnificent first lady to be a part of this night, it's done and over. Now go get a life.

Elliot, The Academy "folks" asked Mrs. Obama, because they were got a suggestion from the WH about it!. I do agree with Donny Deutsch. Mrs. Obama functions is as a First Lady. She's already doing a little too much TV appearences in all kind of shows, from health shows to being a comedian, maybe she should wait until these 4 years are over to start her TV Show, she's a gal pal to Oprah, there you go!

I see you do not have any where on here to say any thing about what was said about the kid that beat the family man almost to death, before he pulled his gun and saved his life. the one good thing that came out of it was he may go to jail but his family will get him back. with out the gun he may be brain dead or dead. I only understand one thing, the family man was following this kid, that was walking around in the rain, and than jump the family man and beat his head in to the ground. But if some wish to make it okay to do this. I must say that could be what is wrong with the kids today. Stand your ground is just that, don’t try to run away for no one will help you, as you seen no one came out to help him. Bloody and beaten he saved his life. But for some reason we only see color here. The family man was a white man he wasn’t and a black kid. What if it was no color and it was what it was. A family man out trying to stop the break in that had been happening and a kid that jump him and try to kill him.

I'm getting sick of seeing Donny Deutsch on every CNN show today saying the same thing, about Mrs. Obama's intrusion. As above, if you didn't want to watch, change channels. Most Americans DID enjoy seeing her and it was fun. If you feel compelled to make a political issue about it, as CNN seems so obsessed with, well, too bad. It was very cool. CNN needs to get something to report and they are making an issue out of this. Time to change channels....

What is unusual about the First Lady of any country supoporting the Arts. JD is obviously tea Party. Can't pay respect to our President and the First Family for the life of him and the work they do, and should do for us. Mrs. Obama was brilliant and I was soooo proud. So glad you used the word achievements, so a splendid word it covers so much and is a reward for a job well done. So who wins our First Lady or Jimmy Fallon? For the most ridiculous piece of tribe on TV. Our First lady needs to seek out those who have achieved above and beyond, like an abused women, who finally had the courage to leave her abusive situation, or a child who was abandoned, issues with in foster care, it would be nice to see her expose some of the needy, who have over come obstacles. Air time for a worthy cause, not Hollywood hype, theirs more going on out there then the problem of Obesity, all you have to do is open your eyes, and look. Yes she is a lovely lady, just given the wrong platform at this time in my eyes.

If this is the only thing the media has to talk about then either all the problems of the world have been solved (sarcasm font enabled), it was an incredibly slow news day or the media has finally jumped the shark when it come to their feigned righteous indignation.

Michelle Obama was invited when it was thought that Lincoln might win. Bill Clinton had already appeared on another Awards show to introduce Lincoln. The next best thing to Obama himself is his wife. By the time Lincoln had lost ground because of truth distortions, too late to uninvite Michelle.

Catherine: The whole event is totally unnecessary. It is a great big group hug by a narcissistic, self-obsessed industry. The only piece of narcissism I can think of that exceeds the Oscars would be if a president landed on an aircraft carrier to announce, in front of a great big banner, that a war was over many years too soon.

I know I speak for the rest of the country, that I do hope in time for next years Oscars you will be able to have recovered enough to watch the show once again.

Hopefully you will not be blindsided by some Stunning display. Maybe next yr you should record the show & watch it later so as not be be stunned again.

Hollywood should find a way to award an Oscar to President Obama. I cannot believe they have waited so long. There has to be a way. Perhaps for supporting the arts or as a humanitarian. Or, create a new category just for the President. It is an outrage that he is in his second term and still does not have an Oscar. I think the award would look great on his mantle next to his Nobel Peace Prize. Surely there is a way to address this terrible injustice.

No, they don't give out Oscars for "Best Performance as President Actually In The White House". Otherwise Georgie boy would have had a lock on it for the eight years from 2000-2008. And they could have Laura present it to him in 2002 when she appeared.

You may have crossed over in Rush Limbaugh territory.

By the way Piers, the juvenile song Seth did at the beginning of the Oscars where they showed Jennifer Lawrence in the audience raising her arm was taped. Didn't you notice not the same dress, not the same hairstyle.

Yes i fit the demographic, but guess what? the song was high school teenage boy juvenile. The 'loser song' at the end of the broadcast was also really lame.

A few good jokes but all in all Seth one time is enough. Next.....

I think Donnie, and much of the audience is missing the point: Hollywood movies are a major US export that employ millions of people. Michelle's appearance will bring lots of global publicity to this important sector of our economy. I'm sure this is not the first time a first lady has been involved with an Oscar ceremony, and if it brings up gross ticket sales, I am sure she won't be the last.

Where was all this fake outrage when Reagan was elected president? Maybe his presidency should be posthumously annulled as Hollywood is so far "Beneath" the presidency?

I remember when Anne Coulter said something on your show about jewish people and you kicked her off your show. Now you have the nerve to insult the first lady about being on the Oscars. Did you cut down Laura Bush or Ronald Reagan for being on the Oscars. The first lady can't help it because she is in shape and she can get around and dance with Jimmy Fallon. Since when does she have to ask permission for what she wants to do. Do you all ask permission for what you want to do, I don't think so. We should be happy to have a first family that is in shape and can get around without health problems and working to get the rest of us healthy. If they didn't have all the republicans with all their hate and cheating to win their individual districts, the President could really get some things accomplished. Stop cutting down our President and Commander in Chief and his family. Go climb under a rock. Or you could make the choice to stop with the small talk and go take your hate and become a military person and go fight for your country. Take your hate and channel it for the good of your country, including you Mr. Doestch. Oh, that right you are too old and out of shape, but for the rest of you haters.

Americans!!! You know I love 'em...

Americans are so used to having a First Lady who carries herself "beyond reproach". Michele is the people's First Lady. It took Princess Diana to take the starch out the monarchy and she became the "people's princess" simply because she didn't carry herself "beyond reproach". She, like Michele was/is human an is approachable.

    Get over it, Haters!!!
It didn't "lower" Michele to be on the Oscar's. It gave the Oscar's some much needed class.

I love seeing her doing "real" things. Like most First Ladies we've had, Michele have much more going for herself than dressing up, giving tours of the White House and picking out china.

Or maybe its just a matter of opinion as to whether political figures need to, or should, make an appearance at this industry award function...and that goes for Mrs. Bush too. (Reagan was at least an actor and former President of the Screen Actors Guild...but maybe he didn't need to be involved either). Why is it most of the African Americans always think when another race says something negative about the
President or Mrs. Obama, it is just because they are Black? That is so false, it has nothing to do with their race, it's about what's right & wrong. In fact as some many seem to forget the President is Biracial, raised by Caucasians,
not totally Black by any means. 🙂

Tomm - you wrote, "it has nothing to do with their race, it's about what's right & wrong." So, who gets to decide what is right and what is wrong? You? And why is it okay for Laura Bush to appear on the Academy Awards but not Mrs. Obama? In my opinion, Mrs. Obama carried it out with dignity and appropriate solemnity. And she had every right to do it, too.

Republicans have been trashing Mrs. Obama for five years now, for everything from her hair styles to the size of her derriere, don't say it isn't because she's black, because we all know that absolutely IS the reason. And it's petty and makes those who do it look like childish middle-schoolers.

I am NOT an African American. I'm a 62-year-old Caucasian woman who admires our current First Lady as much as I have admired any of them.

And who is this Danny or Donny person? I don't recall ever hearing about him before. Is he like the inviter-in-chief for the Oscars or something? Since I don't know who he is, I really don't care what he thinks!

Liberals...lemmings today, lemmings tomorrow. Lemmings for ever! She had no place at the Oscars, and that's the end of it.

I NEVER JUDGE PEOPLE BY THEIR COLOR OR RACE, I JUST KNOW WHAT I FEEL IN MY HEART &
SOUL WHAT I THINK IS RIGHT & WRONG, EVERYONE DOESN'T HAVE TO AGREE! I VOTED FOR
OBAMA, BUT CERTAINLY DOESN'T AGREE WITH EVERYTHING THE PRESIDENT OR MRS. OBAMA DOES,
I HAVE MY OWN MIND & MY OWN OPINION & THAT IS CALL FREEDOM & NOT BEING A PART OF
A CULT! I HONESTLY FEEL SHE IS BEING OVER EXPOSED ON TV & THEREFORE I'M LOSING RESPECT FOR HER!

@Tomm.........So Mr. expert, how long should she be allowed to go out? Once a week? Once a month? Maybe she should only be seen in public as often as you allow your wife to be seen in public? A lot of the times you've seen her on TV is because the media is FOLLOWING her around. She didn't ask to be on TV. They put her on TV simply because she is the first lady. Nobody stopped your monkey azz from turning the TV when you see her on TV. Why do you keep watching if it hurts you so much? She was on for five minutes of a fu'cking four hour show and for that you got your panties in a twist? The ACEDEMY ASKED HER. Obviously they don't feel the same way you do. Grow up. Yes you have your own opinion and if you cant deal with people pointing out how stupid your opinion is, keep it to yourself!

She been on almost every daytime & night TV show there is, it wasn't just the Academy Awards. She chooses
to B on these shows, no one is forcing her. Just wanted to get the facts straight, I have seen her on GMA,
Dr. Oz. Rachel Ray, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon & Jimmy Kimmel, the list goes on, & on. Sorry U get so
upset when someone voices their opinion, I think U need Anger Management. Have a good day. I will have
nothing else to say on this matter, maybe that will make u Happy! Stick & Stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me!

If you're watching all these shows 1) When do you sleep? 2) When do you work? It doesn't matter to me if you blog or not. I've called out a lot of dumb statements made by people. Why should you be any different? Ms. Obama works to help military families and to fight childhood obesity. Yet, because she on the academy awards you "lost respect for her". Your standards must be pretty high. When I saw her I took it for what it was. She announced the winner of the award. I didn't think the show was raised any higher, nor did I think being first lady was any lower.

All of you who are raging about Michelle Obama's remote appearance on the Oscars, please excuse yourselves and go sit out your temper tantrums in the nearest corner. I don't recall hearing a peep about Laura Bush's multiple appearances on Jay Leno, Rachel Ray or Ellen. Nor was a word spoken about Mrs. Bush's remote appearance at the OSCARS in 2002 or, by the way, appearing on AMERICAN IDOL. Donny, Mrs. Obama WAS an invited guest. The Oscars invited her which is why she appeared via remote – and was stunning. Americans, there are so many more things that you need to be outraged about. This, however, is not one of them.
