Clips From Last Night: Founders of Evolve talk about "irresponsible behavior related to guns" and a proud gun owner quits NRA
On Tuesday evening, "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomed to the program Rebecca Bond and Jon Bond. The founders of the organization "Evolve" shared with Piers Morgan their alternative method of enacting change in the sentiment towards guns in America, by working with the NRA.
"Our fight isn't against guns. Our fight is against irresponsible behavior related to guns," said Rebecca Bond. "And so by coming at it from, first and foremost we start with saving a life. So if most people in this country can agree on one thing to begin with and that is to save a life, then we can start from a common ground."
Jon Bond explained the need for gun owners to work with them side by side:
"We need people who own guns to accept our organization," he said. "And if we make them feel bad about them self or they see they're being attacked, then they push back and are intransient. So we need to be inclusive."
Also on the program, attorney James Corley joined Morgan and explained why he is no longer an NRA member. Corley owns 38 guns and used one to shoot and kill a robber at the ACOA Club in Columbia, South Carolina in 2009.
"Because all you ever hear about is fund-raising, for what purpose, I'm not really sure," said Corley about his frustration with the NRA.
"I think there is a disconnect. I don't think they're communicating," said Corley. "They communicate through three magazines and some select mailings. All of which are just basically soliciting funds for whatever, you know, they happen to be pushing at the moment. I'm not really sure what they're pushing."
Watch the clips and listen to the interviews as Corley tells Morgan, "You're going to get a lot more gun safety in a concealed weapons permit class here in South Carolina," than in the NRA's marksmanship program.

I am a proud Gun Owner, and everytime I hear the NRA jump into the gun debate I shutter at their response. Instead of having an open dialog, they reort to attacks, but neither side knows how to have a difficult conversation. THe Anti-Gun side just lobs attacks at the pro-gun side and by our very nature we're prone to defend ourselves. Choosing your words carefully is an understatment with this debate, and both sides fail miserably. However, the NRA, and the gun supporting right, tend to throw more rhetoric around, or push the discussion onto something completely off topic because they can't form an adequate response because of their charged up nature so they revert to an attack stance and verbiage to get their point across. This is not how conversations are held. IIn fact my whole comment can apply to the Government as a whole, but with this case, specifically both sides need to go back to communication 101.

I hope you and your kind stop such a lust for guns before you turn your excellent country into Somalia or Afghanistan, where every one owns a gun. I hope you understand that among those 1000s of members who have joined the NRA in december, some are complete imbeciles who are capable of massacres like sandy hook and when they do you will be morally responsible if not legally. Lastly, I sincerely hope, you realize that your lust for guns can turn around and bite you when your lust for guns and your children's curiosity might cause an incident which you may regret for the rest of your life. I hope some of what im saying has sunk in and at least you will support a assault weapons ban.

But even the person who appeared on Mogan's show last night who quit the NRA doesn't agree with an AR15 ban. He might not be an NRA member but he's still a pro-gun advocate.

Unless you go to crime-ridden neighborhoods, like certain parts of Chicago, New York or D.C. (where ironically have the strictest gun-control and prove that it doesn’t work), you have a hundred times higher chances of being killed in a car accident. 2000 kids die in car accidents in any given year. Are you going to give up driving now? Otherwise you are morally responsible for their deaths, if not legally.
Assault Weapons- ??????? Semi-Automatic Firearms Technology Started with John Moses Browning and the Auto-5 shotgun . I think the 1911 .45 acp Semi-auto pistol came next. If I'm wrong,,so what.. there is no such thing as an assault weapon. They exist in the feeble mids of people who can't fix a bicycle. The chance for any laws passed > ZERO,,

98.5% of us are NOT NRA members and anyone who agrees with them is not a responsible gun owner. I left them years ago. I am a hunters and have a FFL, which makes me an obvious gun owner who you would think supports the actions of the NRA. However, I do not and actually think they are hurting the rest of us gun owners and reducing the future of guns here.

wiseupThe NRA kis balking at some common sense issues without banning any weapons. Limit ammo clips at 10 and require that ALL gun buyers do a background check. Not only at licensed gun shops but at all gun shows, over internet or private sales as well. Any seller who does not do a background check on a purchase of a gun and that gun is used to kill someone ,that seller should be charged as an accessary to that murder. A background check may have revealed that buyer had a felony recordand would have been rejected the purchase. had the backgroung check pased him fine. At least you did backgroung check and covered your &ss.

Thank you Mr Morgan for bringing issues related to getting what I feel has become epidemic. this story about my Brother Michael 's tragic and senseless death. Please , please , please take a moment to think of how together we can recreate an American society that will dramatically improve the quality of life of those most effected and disenfranchised. We all must have STRICT GUN REQUIREMENTS. We can start with banning the sale of assault rifles ,high capacity magazines,armour piercing ammunition and requiring not only stringent background checks but also periodic registration and gun owners liability insurance . Please support any legislation in favor of helping us get this catastrophic situations plaguing our cities and this nation under control . For the sake of lives take a stand of action so no other family's suffers Tehran
If countries like Switzerland, Germany and France can live with high levels of gun ownership and some of lowest homicide rates on the planet, then what does it say about our society? The high homicide rate we have in this country isn't driven by the number of guns we own but by our frighteningly large and ever growing inequality gap. In Western Europe you don't see the extreme levels of poverty we have here.

AR-15 deaths are a tiny percentage of these numbers and the remaining gun related deaths are a fraction of these numbers. The 1st Time I ever Laid Eyes On Piers Morgan was The Day Of The Sandy Hook Horror. I was Chanel Surfing and 2 hours after the last shot was fired I caught it on the news on my TV screen. I watched Piers Morgan that evening for the 1st time. Ask Phil Donahue what its like Piers. I saw his last show . The show that was his last because the network Cancelled his show. There was Sarah Brady, her Handgun Control Inc. Attorney, Stephen Hallbrook Attorney / NRA I believe paid part of his fee to represent the 4 law-enforcement officers on Phils last show who Mr. Donahue Badgered and threatened with jail for not enforcing Federal Brady Background checks...Stephen Hallbrook WON THAT VERY LAWSUIT just a few weeks later in the Supreme Court,,keep it up Piers....your next. Sherriffs do not have to do background checks with NO FEDERAL FUNDS to pay them for their time. No B.A.T.F. to speak of. 2000 agents for all 50 states ??? hang in there .. Why not show the entire clip? Mr. Corley talked about an instance where he had to use his gun for self defense, how things could have gone differently if he had not had his weapon then, and why he still carries a gun. Piers Morgan had no choice but to agree.

I have cable tv and when I surf the channels all I see are cars beiing overturned, houses exploding, people with assault weapons killing dinosaurs and vampires sucking blood. It's no wonder that unstable people watching all these programmes go out and buy assault weapons and kill people.
It's time to remove guns from sale in America and return to acceptable tv programmes for people to watch
A case in point is the present programme "The Following". Is there anything more insane to show the public? If this show doesn't incite unstable people to violence then I'm a monkeys uncle.

You asked if the pro gun control folks should start with advertising tactics like those used by MADD. I think you missed the point of the MADD commercials. The reason MADD has been successful is that they focus on the real problem. They focus on the problem people and the problem behaviors, not the inanimate object (alcohol). Do you think MADD would have been successful if they had fought for banning alcohol? Or banning certain types of alcohol? That would have never worked. Instead, they focus on the people who abuse alcohol and focus on the criminal behavior of drinking and driving. They never talk about limiting what kind of alcohol people can buy or how much they can buy, or even how much they can drink. They only focus on the bad behaviors that can result. Trying to ban alcohol or certain types of alcohol would be a miserable failure. Refer to the prohibition times in America.
So, if we wanted to have more effective conversations and ads that would get more people on both sides talking, then start focusing on the real problems. Criminal behavior with guns and the criminals themselves. Gun owners will naturally resist when the discussion focuses on banning guns or certain types of guns, just like responsible or social drinkers would resist a ban on alcohol or certain types of alcohol. A gun is a tool that in the wrong hands can be destructive, but in the right hands can save lives. Alcohol is a drink that in the wrong hands can be destructive, and actually destroys more lives than guns. More people are killed each year in alcohol related driving accidents than are people murdered by guns. More people are killed with blunt force objects (i.e. baseball bat) than are killed by rifles; rifles of any kind.
Focus on the real issues, and you will see the two sides come together.
