Tonight: Connecticut Police Chiefs remember Newtown; Obama in Israel

As Wednesday sees Colorado governor John Hickenlooper sign three new gun-control measures into law, this evening Piers Morgan hosts a round table discussion that will feature five Connecticut police chiefs. Including Newtown's Michael Kehoe, as well as Douglas Fuchs of Redding, Joseph Gaudett of Bridgeport, Brookfield's Robin Montgomery, and Patrick Ridenhour from Stratford, each of the cops were active during the days and weeks surrounding the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, and will use their "Piers Morgan Live" platform to share their first-hand perspective on the tragic December event, while also providing expert insight into the issue of firearms and gun control in the United States.

Additionally, with Wednesday marking Barack Obama's first visit to Israel as president, tonight the program will invite the founder and president of the Arab American Institute, James Zogby, as well as Senator George Mitchell and attorney Alan Dershowitz to place the international trip into political and global context.

Tune in this evening at 9, as "Piers Morgan Live" pivots between the world's of technology, international politics, and gun control.

Wow Dana, get some background information before you speak. No one is trying to take away your pea shooter. Gun control Advocates want high capacity magazines banned. If you were to take your "COYOTE RIFLE" out for a shooting how many bullets could you fire in 5 minutes? FYI the Newtown shooter was able to shoot 152 bullets, 4 magazines, in less than 5 minutes

Why are you hidding in the United States over the phone hacking? Go home and take you punishment. Oh, I see, you want to ban phone hacking and make it a common practice. You are s a sniveling lil punk that needs to get out of our country. CNN isn't going to save you. I hope they give you up and send you to Britain and you do time for phone hacking. Be careful how you treat people because if you sling too much do-do, some might get on you. I can see you now, crying like a 'lil' female dog. Go home and tell your country about what you're guilty of. The other four are going to rat you out. There's no honor in journalism when you get caught up in a scandal. I'd like you to get 6-30 years like our laws have. Since you like to talk about our government. I hope the U.S. deports you. You're no better than Gary Assange, a raping coward running from justice!

Give me one good reason why these people shouldn’t need high-capacity guns…

        1. People who live near the border to protect themselves against Mexican gangs. Police could take a half hour to arrive, so how would you hold them off with just 10 bullets, if there are multiple assailants with more than 10 bullets in each of their guns? (FYI: criminals don’t follow the law, in case you didn’t know.)

        2. People who want to be prepared if their town should go into anarchy after a catastrophic disaster. We can’t always count on our government as we all saw in Katrina.

Limiting magazine sizes is useless. With a little practice anybody can change a magazine literally in a couple seconds. Secondly, studies have shown that many people freeze during a mass shooting instead of running away. In numerous cases people remained sitting or frozen in place while a shooter reloaded or weapon jammed and were ultimately killed. Furthermore, an AR-15 is a weapon of self defense. Not everyone lives in a big city where the police are around the corner and can arrive on scene in minutes. Many people in rural areas have 20-30 minute police response times. Ranchers and farmers have hundreds and in some cases thousands of acres to patrol and secure. An AR-15 is a force equalizer. It allows one man to hold off many and protect his family, livestock and property until the police can be notified and arrive. One rancher / farmer and an AR-15 can handle anything they encounter including cattle thieves, drug runners, robbers, cartel and illegal immigrant smugglers. You wouldn't have mass shootings if more people carried guns and they removed prohibitations on carrying on schools and government buildings. Most of these cowards go to schools and places where they know no one will be carrying a weapon. Once confronted by police or armed citizens they usually kill themselves. I live in an open carry state where the majority of citizens take advantage of this freedom. Consequently, we don't have these type of incidents because if you walk into a public place and produce a gun about half of the people in the crowd would shoot you dead before you got a couple of shots off. Wake up America, criminals don't care about gun laws and background checks. They will continue to buy and trade guns illegally like they are doing now and will surely be the only ones to own anything the government bans for the rest of us responsible citizens.

I'm an American expat living in Liverpool England. After watching your program with Michael Moore I sent an email to Harry Reid in his response to water down gun control legislation because of his party's inability to stand up for their own morality. I never thought in all my years I would find myself in the position of taking guidance from a Brit (while living in the UK) on how to best exercise my rights as a citizen of a democratic state! Thank you Pierce.

The people of Colorado did not elect the Hinsdale Sheriff to decide laws – only to enforce them. Deciding what to enforce is way above his pay grade. He should enforce the laws or he should resign.

Piers, While I completely understand the reasoning behind everyone wanting to jump on board with an assult weapons ban, I think everyone needs to take a close look at the real issue. An AR-15 is nothing more than a pistol with the potential of 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 rounds. The 50 and 100 round magazines are expensive so not very likely that a person off their rocker would have. These are not the same weapons as they use in the theater of war. The ones soldiers use are fully automatic. The Newtown incident was one of where the shooter was trying to have a large body count. Banning an AR-15 would not have stopped what he did, nor would it have cut down on the number of people he killed. In fact the AR-15, probably reduced the amount of people he killed because an AR-15 is not a close quarters weapon. Imagine being in a room the size of a classroom. If he had not had access to the AR-15 style gun, he could have built a small bomb, or a large bomb creating much more damage. From my understanding all of the ingrediants to do that are readily available in your local grocery store. He could have run a truck right into the class room, or could have used a knife. If we are talking about small children, he could have locked himself in the room and done whatever he wanted to. The point being, while the AR-15 style gun was used, banning that gun, gets you nothing in the long run. If someone wants to bring harm to a group of people, they will find a way to do it. Creating laws, just to create them does not make sense, especially when the AR-15 is not the problem. Take your show and be useful instead of counter productive. Dig deep, what are some things that we could do, to find the people that should not have guns for mental health reasons or any other reason. In Newtown, they had security but he just walked by because they knew him. He attacked that school because he knew there would not be any opposition. It was the same thing at Virginia Tech, Colombine, and Colorado. These people are cowards because they preyed on innocent people. Had there been a security force inplace at the school, it could be said that NewTown would not have happened. When you start taking guns away from honest people, the honest people will obey the law. It is the dishonest people that will find a way to do whatever they want to do, and if the plan includes killing themselves, there is no reprocussion for justice. Just my humble opinon.

I agree with this.. Its amazing how people think taking away guns, or banning high capacity magazines, or banning "just" the simi auto's will help the gun murder problem in this country. All you anti-gun liberals take a look at Chicago. Strictest most regulated gun laws in the country, yet the highest crime... Mexico, another example. Complete gun ban for the citizens, highest crime rate in the world.... Wake up Piers! Wake up Libs! Not rocket science here!

This goes both ways and there's a lot of variables involved. You also need to seriously get off the NRA-influenced 'Chicago-is-the-crime-capital-of-the-US' drivel, let me just say that.

The worst crime spot in the US is Louisiana and it's cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge – both are *far* deadlier than Chicago and have *lax* gun laws. In fact, only a small part of Chicago – the bizarrely named 'City of Chicago' which actually takes up only about 15% of the principal Chicago urban area – has tight gun laws. The continuous urban area around it and neighbouring states have lax gun laws. I guess a black guy from Englewood isn't supposed to cross a silly border to buy one, not that I think it happens like that.

You may have had a point about Mexico with individual states such as Chihuahua or Sinaloa, but they've simmered down somewhat. Honduras is the crime capital of the world outside of war and has *lax* gun laws. There's a lot of variables, one case isn't neccesarily like another.

And to think you want to save the assault gun from death but not the power to help save a child from this again. just one child saved that day from a small magazine to me would be worth it all. may god love those little children becuase I see the contempt that you have an agenda and will have to answer on your judgement day.

By far the most common type of injury accident involving children are those that also involve motor vehicle collisions. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents. This means that on any given day nearly 700 children are harmed due to accidents on our roadways. OF THE 250,000 KIDS INJURED EACH YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 2,000 DIE FROM THEIR INJURIES. Children make up about 5% of total fatalities due to car accidents. In fact, for children between the ages of 2 and 14, “motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death.” Car accidents are also the leading cause of acquired disability (e.g., brain injury, paralysis, etc.) for children nationwide. And approximately 20% of the children who die in a car accident each year are killed in accidents involving a driver who is legally intoxicated. Nearly half of these children were killed while riding as passengers in an automobile driven by an intoxicated driver.

I respect Piers, He is a likeable guy for me. Piers is very passionate about this issue, so am I. However he should not use tragedies like Sandy Hook to push his political views on the people. This show tonight is exactly why people like Ben Shapiro accuse Piers of "standing on the graves of the children" that died at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He has been accuse of this by many people, and that’s exactly what’s he's doing. It’s amazing; people like Piers use a tragedy like Sandy Hook to push their political agendas. Piers would take all the guns away if he could. And any new legislation will only lead more legislation and more rights taking away from the people, then before we know it. Gun rights will eventually be completely taking away. If we continue to allow laws and regulations to get stricter and stricter we will no longer be a free people. But the low information people are not informed enough or intelligent enough to realize this before it’s too late…

Mr. Morgan-If you want the Colorado sheriff to enforce the new Colorado gun laws because he has a sworn duty to do so, why aren't you telling the same thing to President Obama. He also swore to uphold the laws of the United States but I notice that he doesn't think that the Defense of Marriage act (among others) should be enforced. President Obama is leading by example so if the Colorado sheriff doesn't want to enforce the laws why is that a problem? The President seems to pick and choose the laws he'll enforce and no one seems to care about that.

I find it interesting that the left/anti-gunners are always trying to point out that all these politicians were swayed and paid by the horrible NRA with their overflowing coffers of money, as if there isn't big money behind the anti-gun orgs. It is never that perhaps they aren't including 'assault rifles' because they have seen the evidence and heard the debate and realized that they are only used in 1.2% of gun deaths. Also, NBC reported in late February that the final police report on Sandy Hook was that the AR rifle was found in the car trunk and only 4 handguns were found used and in the school. NBC can report that but people like Morgan, Feinstein and Moore still don't seem to want to admit that it wasn't used at Sandy Hook and isn't the problem, and now Moore wants to exploit the images of slaughtered children to further his agenda on emotion rather than fact. The Senate IS going to pass more meaningful legislation like straw purchase laws, background checks, mental health records etc. These anti-gun nuts just can't face the facts and look at the reasonable measures that both parties are talking about passing, things that will actually help in at least reducing gun violence and targeting reasonable laws, loopholes and actions that are supported by debate, facts and actual gun use data. For those of you who support the democrats, not to worry, the real reason they aren't voting to include 'assault rifles' is because they don't want to lose any seats in 2014, they will hope to take Congress and then pass all your feel-good laws that do nothing to prevent the meaningless violence in our nation. Just like gun-free zones did nothing to protect those children.

The ban on magazine sizes should be 10 rounds and retroactive as in you cannot Be in possession of a clip with more than 10 rounds no matter when it was purchased as it is in British Columbia, Canada where I live.

Comparing the right to own guns to gay marriage is proof that the general populations way of thinking is wrong. No one NEEDS to own a gun (excluding law enforcement). Why should that have any bearing on whether 2 men should be allowed to marry?

Truth is, it's not two seconds. You have to expel the clip, grab the new one, install it and then load the rifle. All the while you could drop it, fumble with it or it could get jammed. 2 seconds when you're all messed up in the horror of murder, I don't think so.

I believe all options should be used. any all and and assault weapons being the ones used in almost all mass killings should be banned. they are not hunting guns. everyone I know use 22 rifles or shotguns. more sporting. the only sport it seems these assault rifles are being used for is hunting human beings. but since it seems background checks won't work but still should be done but all the latest wouldn't have turned up a thing on the last 3 shootings. security in schools should also be done but then again the government would be funding that and that would cost lots of money and we know certain groups don't want any government spending. which I think needs to be paid for if found helpful... cut out the stupid spending like paying healthcare costs for government workers making over 100,000 and let them pay it like most everyone else has too. but anything and everything should be done and also really do a study on these video games and take off the crappy tv shows that show so much real life violence (not so real) reality shows.

There is the American mentality, instead of dealing with the real issue that law abiding citizens don't need assault weapons with 100 shot clips they start trashing you and deflecting. The real horror is the little 6 year old with 13 bullet holes in her. Stick to the subject.

I watched your round table with the Police Chiefs and have a couple of comments. First of all a ban on magazines and the reason given behind it is ridiculous. How long does it take to reload a gun, it takes less than two seconds. By what some of you were saying is that gives Law enforcement time to strike and the children time to run. Two seconds gives them enough time to have a false sense of security and expose themselves thus making them an easier target. Let’s see how far you can run in 2 seconds, not far enough to get away I’m sure. You should go and play paintball with no paintball gun and you will see how little chance you have if you are not able to shoot back.
You are a very intelligent person but you lack common sense if you actually believe what you have been saying is true. I say we should train and arm the willing teachers and administrators to protect our children. That solution is economical, enforceable, and quick, a common sense approach. It is time for the citizens to stop whining like babies and the Government to allow us to protect ourselves and each other from those who seek to harm the citizens of this country. The police cannot be everywhere to stop every crime, nor would I want or expect them too.
Last, There are so few automatic assault rifles in the US I don’t know why we are even talking about it. An AR-15 or American sold SKS or AK-47 are not assault rifles or any different than any other semi-automatic weapon from a .22 to a 50 caliber. They can only shoot one bullet per trigger pull.
I would like to see every Law abiding citizen be trained and encouraged to carry a firearm. These crazy people that attack unarmed citizens with ease would surly think twice before attacking a bunch of armed people going about their daily lives. There is a town in Texas that has proven that fact!

      Dana,
I hear you loud and clear. What the left refuses to acknowledge is that 99.999% of gun owners should never be painted as irresponsible or crazy because of the acts of a deranged young man. Yet that is what they are doing. Really, it is no different than racism in that they label all gun owners based on their irrational fear and prejudice. Maybe we should call it profiling – guilty by association.
The people who want bans are the same ones who promote 'tolerance' as policy yet they refuse to tolerate millions of law abiding gun owners. Instead, they demonize them. The same folks preach 'free choice' as a right. Right until they disagree with the choice you made to be armed. They defend their rights, except the one which allows them to keep the ones they hold dear secure from encroachment.
Foolish. Short sighted. Hypocritical. And a danger to liberty.

Military and LEO take an oath to defend the const1tut10n, which forbids them from acting against the citizenry. Some might, most won't. The majority take their oath very seriously. Believing otherwise is where the fantasy comes in. Then again (this is speculation on my part) if that were to happen I believe Patriots would manage to bring more than rifles to bear if the government were to deploy troops in a hostile manner.

We all watch the news. All around the world. FYI. I have five daughters. I have seen the news about the mass killings in the US lately. It deeply saddens me. I can't believe people defend the right to own magazines/clips that hold that many bullets while their children are being murdered in their schools. You can't stop people from murdering people, those are mental health issues and unfortunately nothing can be done until After they commit the crime. Americans use the 2nd Amendment to justify their right to have such magazines when it doesn't even apply. It has nothing to do with your 2nd Amendment right at all. You have no answer to the problem, just attacks on people who would like something done about it.

A simple ATF stamp on your drivers license would save tens of thousands of lives. If you commit a major crime, the stamp comes off and you can't buy Alcohol, tobacco, or Bullets.

Connecticut Senate Bill 452 was put forward to remedy the fact that it lacks an "assisted outpatient treatment" law. But the bill was passed to Connecticut's Joint Committee on Judiciary, where it quietly faded away because of opposition by those who viewed it as egregious and outrageously discriminatory.

Had this law passed, it may have forced Adam Lanza to be treated for his alleged mental illness instead of allowing him to roam free and ultimately to kill 26 persons in a vindictive rage.

Why didn't the legislation pass? Because the ACLU and other "civil liberties" groups cried foul. The ACLU said the bill would "infringe on patients' privacy rights by expanding the circle of who can medicate individuals without their consent."
