Mansfield on his book "Killing Jesus": "I'm trying to strike out that anti-semitic lie that's existed all through our history"
With much of the Christian community eyeing the upcoming holiday weekend, this evening "Piers Morgan Live" welcomes Stephen Mansfield for a fascinating and timely primetime interview.
Author of the upcoming book "Killing Jesus: The Unknown Conspiracy Behind the World's Most Notorious Execution," Mansfield uses tonight's platform to answer any potential critics who are suggesting his work – which implicates the Jews for Christ's murder – may be anti-semitic in its essence:
"It's not at all anti-semitic," Mansfield insists. "In fact, in making that distinction – between the small group of leaders who were sort of cow-towing to Rome and thus were corrupt and were going after Jesus – making a distinction between them and the average Jew, on the street in Jerusalem, I'm actually dealing with that very issue."
While Mansfield does maintain that those who served to set Christ's killing in motion were Jewish, he's specific in suggesting that it was a select group of Jews, and therefore, the entire faith should not blamed for his death:
"The fact is that Jesus was quite popular with the people. That's why this small group of leaders tried him overnight, that's why they were concerned that the crowds would rise up and that he could lead a rebellion. And when they paraded him through the streets, the next day, after that overnight trial, and took him out to be crucified, the people wept and wailed," the "New York Times" bestselling author tells Piers Morgan. "So the idea, that all of the people of Jerusalem, all the Jews of that time, sort of crucified Jesus, and were part of this conspiracy is false. And in me making that distinction, I think I'm trying to strike out that anti-semitic lie that's existed all through our history."

I sent my children to wednesday nevening bible study for fun, enrichment and to socialize and make friends. some were great but closed do to scheduling or funding, but a few, or this one actually, I sent my kids for a few weeks , the church come pick them up by a bus. Advertise through free ice cream sundays, then I get a knock at my door with four or five adults ( organizers and a preacher) at dinner time un announced. they want to have a talk, and have bible study. So i let them. Know even though i know were all capable of being a sinner or commitng a crime for that matter, they could come to grips unless they heard me say I was a sinner and I need to read their Bible and study it everyday. politely i said what my beliefs were and I thnk man and women already know what God expects from them, exept the ones who continue to kill. commit crime, judge , and be a nuecance. I find the Bible pretty Fictional really. I need the meyhem and carnidge of the past 5000 years to tell me how to live. people I studied history in school like I was suppose to and learn from history, its common sense to know! Judge less parent your children more = a morale fibered Nation and communities to cherrish!
Mr. Mansfield is a liar and a fraud. I can't believe you folks have him on and refer to him as a 'scholar'. His master's degrees are from a school with no campus. Just a P. O. Box. I have caught him lying in the past.
He is not some kind of impartial scholar who has researched Jesus. He is the pastor of a church who makes a large amount of money writing works of pious fiction that affirm the worldview of ignorant religious people.

CJ, Which bit of what Mansfeild said makes you cross? I cant see that he said anything that should annoy anyone. Do you want to believe that the Jews those that listened to him on the mount, his friends and relations, killed him or is it some other part of what Mansfeild said that makes you cross with him. Everyone knows that anyone group of people demonstrating usuallly belongs to one party, one way of thinking or other rather than being representative of al the population you dont have to be a ihstorian to know tha just a citixen who has ever protested anything. How anyone came to think otherwise about the group outside Pontious Pilates Palace is beyond me, especially if you think that this was so shortly after Jesus entered into jerusalem in triumph. Either people in a manifestation belong to just to one political group or other or they have been convocked by the leaders of the country, which is the case in countries with fascist and other totalitarian regimes, in which the people go where the leaders want them to go as a way of getting on with their oppressive leaders who if they see them in acts of solidarity to thenselves the rulers judge them to be good citizens, style the people who throng round leaders in North Corea, I know, it is not so long ago that Franco was a totalitarian leader hear in Spain and people remember still how people went to the palace to throng around him as if they loved him out of fear of him.
If people dont stand up for the jews on this point, then there maybe another holocaust, which was not just the slaughter of the jews but also the enormouse and prolonged emotional suffering of seeing how their friends and relations suffered and died and the physical suffering hunger and overwork for weeks mounths and years before they got gassed. Do you think Jesus wanted this for his compatriots? He who was always so forgiving who stuck back the ear of the soldier who came to arrest him, a roman to not a jew like him it would be normal to suppose he minded more about the jews his own people than romans and who told his apostles that he who lived by the sword would die by it, Would he not also say, "those who put people in danger of lynching by favouring all reports that damn them and turning a deaf ear to all reports that do them a favour, will die lynched themselves', as an extention of the same idea? Maybe he who lives by the sword will die by the sword, is not the most charitable of Jesus sayings, if you think about it it would tend to lead to people being unforgiving of those who are violent, so the saying is unlike the Jesus who stuck back the ears of the violent and abusive.
The real problem with the Jews is that if you read a bit about the discussions of the most famouse rabbies you get so strongly reminded of Jesus as wouldd incline those that read about rabbies to doubt about how special Jesus was or to convert to judaism and if you know anything about human nature, you will know how hard religious leaders are likely to work and conive to make sure they dont lose their faithfull and if absolutely blackening jews is what it take then they wil do it.
I have read history and it seem that English Kings used to ask in the jews because they were so good for the economies of the countries in which they lived and they were also useful because whenever their was civil unrest, the kings would find some way of distracting attention from themselves by getting the unrestful to direct their ire against the jews, so a scape goat whenever the need arose from roman times on, the roman even used the jews in this way and a benefit to the economy.. I have also read about the inquisition, and the abuses of other bits of the christian faith such as the killing of so many women as whitches and when i find that there are people who dont want to clear the jews name I think that we are not as far from the inquisition as I had imagined and if you think of the pogroms in the last century and the holocaust, we are very close to it in time as well. The holocaust is the crescendo of the inquisition only that there were no members of the clergy directly involved in the purge, just the people the clregy had educated executing infidels.
The catholic church is laying a lot of emphasis on its unchanging nature in these last few mounths. It has had some such very wicked bits to its nature in history, such as the inquisition and the protection of pederasts, that such a claim is more likely to do it damage than anything else. rose macaskie

I listened to some of this interview and was appalled. I was not surprised to read the comment above that shows that Mansfield is not an expert or a scholar. I heard Mansfield say that a group of Jews conspired to have Jesus killed. Anyone listening to that would think, "Oh yes, that's what the Church said for hundreds of years, that the Jews killed Jesus." It is like saying that "a group of Americans conspired to kill Abraham Lincoln." Jesus was a Jews, all his apostles were Jews, his mother was a Jew, and all those who supported him were Jews. Living in a Jewish society, some of those people, who were Jewish, were involved in his demise. But even then, the Romans were primarily responsible for his death. Especially considering the many murders and other punishments of Jews over the centuries because of the mistaken and misleading belief that "the" Jews killed Jesus, it is dangerous for CNN to give a forum to this non-scholar Mansfield who makes statements that can be taken as affirming that the Jews killed Jesus. This is the opposite of what should be done during holidays in honor of Jesus, who, if he stood for anything, stood for compassion, love, caring, forgiveness, and turning the other cheek, not attacks on those who did not accept that he was the Christ.

I dont believe he was killed. I had an epiphany when whatching "The Life of Brian", I suddenly thought,"of course someone did help him, his rich friend went to pontius pilate who had not wanted him crucified anyway and they thought up a way to fake his death and get him away, that is why he was alright nearly two days later if you think of it seeing it like this makes everthing fall into place. Think, rich might mean more than rich, maybe some sort of millionaire so with more money to grease roman hands and power to bribe or apothacaries or buy their potians and such. He died after the romans handed him up a drink on a sponge did not he ? Waas it maybe not some drug calculated to make it look as if he had died? Pontius Pilate did not want him dead, of course it was easy to get him off. I like what jesus said more than the fact that he came back from the dead. Thanks, Piers, for this great and timely interview. I am impressed by the information that Mr. Mansfield gained by studying Roman records matches so well the images recorded by Anne Catherine Emmerich, which formed the basis for Mel Gibson's "Passion" movie. There is really no conflict between faith and reason- both are seeking the truth.
I agree with the spirit of what you said but dont agree with this terrible simplicity that people now seem to think is necessary to use to make sure that no one misunderstands any message.
I dont agree with it, for one, because the wicked also make use of this supposed need for simplicity in order to confound people who get used to nothing making much sense any more and so just start believign things that dont quite sound right to them that it does not seem to me that it is a thing to be encouraged. I have known a lot of groups who use this pretended need for simplicity to maintain the general pubic ignorant and cut them out of true discussion of many themes tha effect their lives so I also disagree because simplicity is not to be encouraged.
The world is complicated our brains are capable of a lot and so we should be asked to excercise them. I so agree with tha part of the thesis of the film "babe" the gallant Pig that has to do with commenting on the classist thinking that treats one part of society as if it could not understand anything that was not very simple, which tends to lead to those who see themselves as better than others introducing conversations that allow so little display of intelligence that it makes the supposedly stupid look stupid indeed which is absolutely what happens in the film, the sheep are incapable of stringin gtwo words together when they talk to the dogs and are perfectly sensible when talking to the pig. In the film the posh dogs think the sheep stupid and the sheep think the classist dogs stupid, which way of looking at each other so got in the way of any real communication between each group as to make them both look stupid. That I dont like this sort of intellectual snobbery which make both groups look stupider than they are but the sheep more so, is not to say I dont think education is necessary in order to form peoples minds I do think education is necessary but part of education is what you learn as an adult and this sort of division makes for some parts of society learning nothing in adult life from other parts of society, so as well as leading to a cruel lack of communication between groups it helps keep those who acquired less information as childen down, by keeping them from making up for that loss in childhood in adult life and as a woman, have not I suffered enough from men trying not to say anthing complicated to me in a mean attempt to make me ignorant or because they so badly wanted me to conform to their idea of a woman and so were incapable of imagining i might have anthing interesting to say except on cooking or children, as to make me know how much people suffer if you dont insist on the capacities and potential of all, after all being cut out of the discussion of much of what most affects us is boring and tends to make life a more frightening maze of unknown elements than it needs to be.
The churches have asked us to believe all the Jews killed Christ, that the group outside Pontious Pilates palace was necessarily representative of the Jewish nation, so we have, on and off, been very mean to all jesus families descendents. If we pretended that no Jews had anything to do with his death, then, would not people just say these people are untrustworthy, they pretend no jews had anything to do with jesuses death when it is clear that they asked for his death? It is necessary to distinguish, to say that a group of jews did ask for his death it is in the bible, also it is so probable, people get so scared of the knew that it is more than likely that some parts of the jewish nation were very anti Jesus, indeed we know they used to send out people to ask him awkard questions and try to trip him up, we know he had enemies amongst the jews, it is just that obviously his enemies were not representative of all jews.
It suprises me that peolpe have any dificulty understanding the point of veiw of the Sanhedrine and so forgiving them. There are NO Roman sources for the life of Jesus. Mansfield is full of it. He is a two-bit preacher turned revisionist historian and David Barton wannabe.
Why not have a real scholar on like Bart Ehrman or Dr. Robert m Price?

What a waste of intellect. Just a heated discussion of one of the many mythological stories that we the rising apes developed because we were afraid of the dark and to egotistical to think that this is it. No after life, just waiting worm farms is our actual fate.
Wow – there's so much confusion in the replies here. The Bible clearly explains why Jesus came and why he died. It was prophesied in the old testament thousands of years before it happened. It's pointless to try to explain specifically who killed him and who is to blame. Jesus himself had many teachings in the Bible on this very topic. You may not believe it, like it, or accept it but the Bible teaches that it was Gods plan to sacrifice his only Son for the sin of all humanity. Jesus chose to go along with that plan. He prayed in the garden that this cup be taken from him but not his will, God's be done. The religious leaders were too proud to accept this. They considered themselves righteous by their works though their hearts were still impure. The Romans had their own political rein to protect but were largely tricked into crucifying Jesus. Pilate wanted to let him go but it was the custom on the passover to release one prisoner. The religious leaders chose Barabas – a murderer. Every person before, during, and after Jesus' life also did it because they had a sin nature that separated them from God and could not change that on their own. Any true Christian, knows they killed Jesus. This understanding brings love for all men, not division. It's a shared admission that we all want to be our own Gods by nature but we are not. You can see it here in the replies. Lots of little Gods. Anyone is free to accuse me of being an idiot but this is what the Bible teaches. If you're going to come up with theories of your own about who killed Jesus and why he died, first examine the claims of the Bible. Then you're free to accept or reject it.
