Michael Reagan defends same-sex marriage op-ed: "I think it does send a slippery slope"

Amidst the aftermath of a wildly controversial op-ed published in the "Ironton [Ohio] Tribune," on Wednesday "Piers Morgan Live" welcomed Michael Reagan to the show, offering the returning guest an opportunity to share the context and perspective behind his writing.

As part of the live interview, Piers Morgan reviewed specific sections of Reagan's piece which he found to be particularly offensive, including the portion where he projected the future of gay "culture" among Americans:

"Ultimately about changing the culture of the entire country; it inevitably will lead to teaching our public school kids that gay marriage is a perfectly fine alternative and no different than traditional marriage. There is also a very slippery slope leading to other alternative relationships and the unconstitutionality of any law based on morality. Think about polygamy, bestiality, and perhaps even murder."

"I think it does send a slippery slope," offered the adopted son of former President Ronald Reagan, defending his op-ed. "I think if you accept the redefinition of marriage then you're going to have to accept the redefinition all the way down the line."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as Reagan offers further insight into his thinking, even surprising Morgan by saying "two loving gay people, I think it's wonderful."

Most people don't know that the american medical association has never verified any finding that people are born gay, that's why they call it gay orientation. That means it's a choice. You should not be given special rights because of a choice you make.

Verified? You don't even know what the AMA does, do you?
The choice people make is religion. Pretty soon, you'll see religious fanatics being fired from their jobs, as the tide continues to turn against these people.

Being gay is as much of a choice as religion is. You seem to be bigoted against religion. Care to explain?

People do not make such painful choices, where they often have to survive a suicide attempt before accepting who they are. I think it is likely that people who think it is a choice are usually gay themselves, but in their case their shame has overcome their desires. They think that everyone has gay tendencies, and without stern repression, the human race will die out as everyone turns gay.

To Mike Regan: Keep your religious views out of our federal laws. Not all Americans believe in your god, but all Americans do pay taxes that subsidize your church.

So if you want your church to continue to discriminate against people, “who your god created that way” then let your church do so without federal subsidies.

Separation of church and state is there to prevent state sanctioned religious beliefs. This anti-gay nonsense is being pushed as a form of state religion.

Many many tax paying Americans don't recognize any religion that discriminates against other human beings.

You do realize that freedom of religion was enacted to keep the government out of religion, not the other way around. Learn your history.

Not keeping religion out of government is called a theocracy, Mr. 'Atheist'. If you want a system like that, you can always move to Iran or Afghanistan.

You may want to read my post again. I was only pointing out historical fact. I never claimed to desire a theocracy. Christianity is a part of this country, whether you like it or not. I may not believe in a deity, but I know that this country was founded on Christian principles.

The agnostic MENSA-member with two Ph.D.'s (ha ha ha ha) is unaware of facts and chooses to echo the fraud David Barton? Or maybe he's just a pathological liar.

"The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
        – Treaty of Tripoli, signed by John Adams (but he wasn't a MENSA-member with two Ph.D.'s, haha)

Freedom of religion was written to protect us from creating a theocracy . In other words so we never have a relgion running our government. We created a "secular" government to protect everyones rights. You have the individual freedom to prctice what ever you like ,but you do not have the collective right to shove your personal religious choise down anyones throat.

Agnosticism and Atheism are not the same. The former believes the existence of any deity is unknowable, while the latter completely denies it.

When churches discriminate and hurt people it's time to pull their tax exempt status. Let them have their kooky isolated groups with their kooky isolated dark age ideas, but let it happen without federal subsidies.

Watch how fast they get a new revelation saying that gay is okay, when the free tax ride goes away.

A quick comment on polygamy compared to gay marriage. People are born gay, they want to consensually marry the person they love, pretty simple.

Polygamy is a cultist religious view that women must be subservient to men as a way to get into heaven. They often require young female children to marry old kooky dudes against their will.

    April 4, 2013 at 3:48 am | Report abuse | Reply
    • Ainsley

Polygamy is a cult? You seem to have a very narrow-minded interpretation and very limited knowledge of the subject. What you described above only applies to certain actions taken by certain groups of people and it does not represent all other polygamists. It is like saying, it’s the hom0se*xuals who tend to molest young boys therefore hom0se*xuality is wrong, which I’m sure you’d vehemently disagree as I would.

Polygamy has existed in many places in the world and throughout history since the practice ensured the survival of the society. Back then, when many children died before they come of age, a strong procreation method was absolutely necessary to keep the population intact. Tribal wars were often won by numbers, if the population becomes small, it meant their sovereignty was threatened and losing a war meant death or enslavement. There are countries that have practiced polygamy little to do with religion and more to do with pragmatism. A good example may be Ja*pan before the Meiji restoration.

I’m not a proponent of polygamy (I’m for traditional marriage), but I feel it is totally unfair when pro-gay-marriage people speak ill of polygamy as immoral or harmful. Why is it wrong to love multiple people at the same time? Some people can find harmony and thrive in that type of union. You criticize discrimination against others based on their se*xual orientations, yet you discriminate against polygamists. Also that means you discriminate against Muslims who practice polygamy in the countries that allow it. You think Christian fundamentalists are bigots for refusing to embrace gay-marriage? Then you are just as bigoted for refusing to understand a different culture and lifestyle such as polygamy.

Stop saying that people are born gay without producing medical proof. There is no medical proof just empty, suggestive statements, which most people are naive enough to believe without checking for verification. It's the biggest lie ever told.

I am perfectly willing to believe that you are attracted to both men and women. That would explain why you say it is a choice, because for you, it is.

How heated arguments do escalate when people do not get their way! I suggest you go back and read the founding fathers letters and the intent of our government as it is supposed to be, but i know you won't. Gay marriage is not a civil right and to suggest so is foolish. I think Piers Morgan was rude and pushing his own beliefs instead of interviewing and practicing professional journalism. And your rash comments about firing Chrisitans is rdidiculous. You want your rights while demanding striping others of theirs. I believe in traditional marriage between one man and one woman, and I will not apologize for my beliefs to suit you, and i and others have a right to say we think it is wrong. I believe that children thrive in a home with a mom and dad. Just look at our culture and what it has done to families, but no you won't because you have a goal to push your own agenda and you do not care to look at the big picture. The government should not be wasting tax payers' dollars or time determing alternative lifestyles.

Oh, yes. You demand to be kowtowed to, and when you're not, you accuse others of "persecution". I did not say "Chrisitans" [sic] (nice spelling, ignoramus), I said evangelical/fundamentalist so called Christians. Given that this is how they have advocated treating others, it's only just to inflict it on them. An eye for an eye! It's from your own demented Bronze Age rag, lunatic.

Striping the rights of others? Bible-thumpers are generally the most uneducated people on the planet. And you can't even spell 'stripping' – even as you go to joints where that is the main intent. Your writing is atrocious, indicating that you're extremely uneducated and intelligent. I'm sorry, Connor, I suggest that you go back to elementary school, because you obviously missed literally everything that was taught.

I have read it. And I suggest you review what America is founded upon. The absence of a state religion, or a state religious theme. Just because you believe something, like marriage for a certain group of our society is bad, you can't influence our (all Americans, all Americans beliefs) to make laws that ban freedoms to serve YOUR beliefs.

Beliefs differ! This is what America is about!

There are places one can go in this world where religious beliefs are enforced on people. And we have spent American blood and trillions trying to free the world of this behavior.

How hypocritical to try and impose this on our own citizens.

Piers Morgan hosts an opinion show not the hard news. Therefore, he can have an opinion. I am sure you watch Fox News which has very little news also. They list most of their shows as "Opinion Shows". I assume you think that is OK though. No one is asking you to apologize for your beliefs, just don't push your beliefs on others.

Piers Morgan should not call himself a Catholic. I am praying the new Pope lays down the law and forces those, especially those with a platform to voice their opinions publicaly, to denounce their Catholic status. YOU ARE NOT A CATHOLIC IF YOU DO NOT STAND BY THE TEACHING OF THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH!!!!! Just as Jesus himself did not force those who did not believe that they had to eat his body and blood in the Eucharist, he will not stop those who choose not to following his instructions. The bible if full of stories about what happens to societies who do not follow his rules. YES, God has rules whe need to follow if we want to walk with Him and enter Heaven after death. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!! There really is a HELL and you are choosing it with your free will.

Yeah, the Bible is full of nonsense. If people are not Catholics if they don't stand by the teachings of the Catholic Church, I have good news for you: only about 5% of the one billion you claim for your church are truly Catholics. Very few accept archaic Catholic nonsense on contraception inter alia.

Hilarious! First you say the catholic church should FORCE its followers to do something, then follow it up by admitting Jesus didn't FORCE anyone to do anything. Considering the church, and most notably its leaders, are supposed to emulate Christ, I'd say that's a great big fail.

And you are free to believe that way, but there should be no LAW in America that forces me to believe that way. This is the land of the FREE and the BRAVE. Humanity gets into trouble when “beliefs” hurt others. And discrimination against the way someone is born hurts others.
