"Piers Morgan Live, Rewind": Penn Jillette, Billy Baldwin and Piers Morgan talk guns, Gingrich calls Morgan's comments "absurd"

Whether you fell asleep early, stayed out too late, or simply want to watch it again, we realize it's not always possible to get your entire "Piers Morgan Live" fix from television. As an answer to this, we offer the below labor of love – "Piers Morgan Live, Rewind" – dedicated and designed to getting you caught up and connected to the conversation.

  • Penn Jillette, Billy Baldwin and Piers Morgan talk guns and violence in the media

On Thursday evening, "Piers Morgan Live" welcomed back Billy Baldwin and Penn Jillette to the program where they discussed a myriad of topics including same-sex marriage, gun legislation, the NRA and violence in the media.

During the conversation, Jillette and Piers Morgan engaged in a heated debate over Morgan's arguments for gun control.

"The vast majority of people who have mental illness problems never hurt anybody," said Jillette. "The vast majority of people who have guns never hurt anybody. The problem is you're dealing with such tiny numbers of people."

The comment incited a strong reaction from Morgan who argued back, "What do you call tiny numbers?"

"Mass shootings are escalating in a dramatic way since 2007. Many more of them happening and the scale of them, massively higher," continued Morgan.

Every time you make this argument, every time you make it, the - what you do is you start with the mass murderers, and then you will ask how many gun shootings there are," explained Penn in response. "And those are two very, very different things."

Meanwhile Baldwin addressed the NRA and gun industry's argument for gun rights under the Second Amendment by comparing it to the entertainment industry's backing of the First Amendment.

"The entertainment industry hid behind the First Amendment to line their pockets with billions of dollars in profits and they stepped up. We have a rating system for television, we have a rating system for video games, we have a rating system for movies and for music," said Baldwin.

"And that's exactly what the gun industry and the NRA are doing now. They're hiding behind the Second Amendment to line their pockets with profits."

  • Gingrich considers Morgan's comments "absurd"
  • Newt Gingrich returned to the program and continued his debate with Morgan on guns in America.

During the very lively debate, Morgan asked and answered his own question, saying, "Arm the teachers, 120,000 schools in America, arm a teacher in every one. Why do the NRA want to do that? Because it sells another 120,000 guns."

To which the former Republican House speaker laughed and responded "That is an absurd comment."

"The greatest gun salesman in American history is President Barack Obama. Nobody has led to a greater increase in gun purchases than the Obama administration," said Gingrich. "And the fact is this president for some reason has spurred in the American people a desire to own a gun on a scale that the NRA couldn't have dreamed of."

      Hello Piers,
I just wanted to express my admiration over your single-handed battle against situation with guns in America. It is very sad that you have to deal with so much ignorance, dishonesty and plain stupidity when trying to get any kind of logic out of your opponents' arguments. May I suggest one question you may want to ask those people: how many people get saved by guns in America vs. number being killed each year? I am sure there are not that many cases when law-abiding citizens had been able to stop criminals by using guns, – unfortunately, don't know the official statistics on that.
Thank you for all your hard work on trying to bring America to sanity.

Irina, I am a licensed gun carrier. If put in a situation where someone was going to hurt you or Pier. I promise, I will do nothing to protect you or him. And if I lived next door to either one of you, I would put a sign in my front yard telling all the thief that I have a gun to protect myself but you don't, and I promise them that I will do nothing to help you.

Please do some research on "Defensive Gun Uses (DGUs)". There have been about 13 non-NRA studies on DGUs that estimate between 800,000 and 2,500,000 (depending on what study you read) instances occur each year where someone has stopped a criminal act, either from commencing or completing, with the threat of or actual use of a gun.

If you want to talk about ignorance and stupidity you don't have to look any further than the lawmakers who are trying pass gun control legislation. They are demonstrating no knowledge on the subject. Lets hope they can demonstrate more knowledge on other issues, otherwise it would appear we have worryingly elected a bunch of idiots to run this country.

Same CO Senator, Diana Degette, putting her foot in it again. Once again demonstrating the arrogance and stupidity of some of our elected officials who advocate tougher gun laws and bans. Lets hope the good people of Colorado vote her out in 2014, as she clearly doesn't have the intellect to hold office.

its easy when u look at statistics & when you become familiar with guns. piers will never have this sweet 15 yr old on because he couldnt disrespect her like he does everyone else who talks about logic & facts that is on his.... , show? i duno soap opera? whatever u call this thing he has on CNN...

well either way anybody who uses facts & logic to explain to piers what needs to be done to stop violence, piers freaks out & does anything he can to not let them speak. even if it means aciting like he is insane & doesnt have control over his emotions & having temper tantrums like little children .

if she was on, atleast she talks fast --so maybe she could get a few things in about what needs to be done to stop violence before piers has his temper tantrums & wont let her tell him what is proven to work to stop violence

I am so sick of this universal back grounds debate. There is a lie that gun checks are not held at Gun Shows. This is utterly not true. Having bought guns at gun shows I know for a fact that you are checked. I have a concealed weapons permit and I know that what is being told is a lie.

Solution to the problem: every gun bought and sold should have a carbon copy bill of sale. That way when BATF searches who bought the firearms your able to show who you sold the gun to. It is a wrong thing for a neighbor to be able to find out protected information about their lives there is such thing as data protection.

HIgh capacity magazine prices have sky rocketed. The number of guns being sold are through the roof. Most of the guns are more than three months behind in making firearms as the demand is so high. There is enough guns on the market even if they never make enough you can still buy them if you want to pay the large amount.

So rather than worrying about the usa he should be worried about what's happpening in the UK as knife killings are out of control No one wants to talk about that. What about Piers at the News of The World? He doesn't talk about that.

so tell the truth about the so called universal gun checks. It's already in place. The fact is we don't need more gun laws we need enforcement of the current laws and not more laws. Enforcement of current laws just the same as immigration we have immigration laws. The problem is we need enforcement of existing laws. That's what we should be arguing about. We need more BATF agents to check these things rather than more laws. BATF is in charge of guns in this country not Piers Morgan. Nothing personal just deal with the truth.

      Mr. Morgan,
If you do not like the laws in company could you keep your comments to yourself. I do not need a big speak out about the laws in the USA when the person is not of this country. Why do you not going back to England, oh you are not welcome there. Will guess what the people of the USA do not like you here either. Is is not the NRA against the peolpe it is the poelpe against you. If you are going to state fact at least state true fact and not just half of them. I would like you to leave this country. This is my right to ask you because I am a person born here is the US and do not like a person for another country coming here and telling us about the USA> Please would you go back to England. thank you if you do if not you are a corward.

Another Mass Shooting, Another Psychiatric Drug? Federal Investigation Long Overdue

Fact: Despite 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of mania, hostility, violence and even homicidal ideation, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use, there has yet to be a federal investigation on the link between psychiatric drugs and acts of senseless violence.

Fact: At least 31 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 162 wounded and 72 killed (in other school shootings, information about their drug use was never made public—neither confirming or refuting if they were under the influence of prescribed drugs).

Fact: Between 2004 and 2011, there have been over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence. These include 300 cases of homicide, nearly 3,000 cases of mania and over 7,000 cases of aggression. Note: By the FDA’s own admission, only 1-10% of side effects are ever reported to the FDA, so the actual number of side effects occurring are most certainly higher.

Fact: It took months for the release of information showing that police had found psychiatric drugs in the apartment of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter, James Holmes—including the anti-anxiety drug clonazepam and the antidepressant sertraline, the generic version of the antidepressant Zoloft.

roostershablim, why would you quit the NRA because of Timothy McVeigh? He did not use a gun to do his dirty work! Do you quit whatever party you belong to, every time they commit a crime? Do you quit any other organizations that you belong to, after someone else who belongs to the same group commits a murder or murders, etc. Without the NRA, your guns and your gun rights would've long ago disappeared! What a retard.
