Jason Collins' former fiancée, Carolyn Moos, on his coming out: "I think he's in the process of taking ownership of the here and now"

On the heels of Monday's revelation that NBA player Jason Collins is gay, and has formally come out in this week's edition of Sports Illustrated, on Tuesday evening "Piers Morgan Live" invited Carolyn Moos to share her personal insight and reaction to a development that has rippled far beyond the world of sports and deeply embedded itself in the national conversation.

Having dated Collins for eight years, and been engaged to the 12-year veteran until he broke it off in 2009, Moos detailed hearing from him this week:

"He actually called this past weekend and we spoke a couple of times on Monday, so it's really fresh in my mind," said the former WNBA player who first met Collins when they were both playing basketball for Stanford University. "It's going to be a process, absolutely, and it just takes a lot of perspective, and a lot of understanding, and a lot of open conversation."

Noting that Moss had given eight years of her life to their relationship, Piers Morgan asked if Collins had been remorseful during the phone calls:

"Did he apologize to you?" asked the host.

Opting to not answer the question directly, Moos instead shared her analysis:

"I think he's in the process of taking ownership of the here and now which is actually coming out," she suggested. "That can be very – I assume – overwhelming."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as Moos goes on to explain how she's had to "rewrite the script" of her own life, after realizing she and Jason Collins would not become husband and wife.

So his story is that he's gay. Guys lie every day to their girlfriends about commitment and string them along. Her story is that she lied to herself for a significant part of that eight years about his lack of commitment to her. Some of her friends, her co-workers, her relatives certainly told her to move on after x number of years. But she didn't listen to them and didn't do it. Now she has the realization that she has wasted x years of her life in a relationship that was doomed from the start. It never matters how many times this happens to other women. All women think that this can't happen to them. We humans have a hard time learning from the mistakes of others.
