Damien Echols on the death penalty: "You can't teach people that killing is wrong by killing someone"

Coming up this evening at 9, "Piers Morgan Live" welcomes back Damien Echols to the program. Echols, a central figure in the infamous "West Memphis Three" case which polarized a community, was imprisoned and on death row for more than 18 years, before being released in August 2011.

During the interview, Echols shares his thoughts on the issue of the death penalty in light of the Boston bombing investigation. Because Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is charged under federal law, under this jurisdiction, the Justice Department will decide whether to actually seek the death penalty for Tsarnaev.

"That's always going to be our first response," said Echols about issuing the death penalty. "We want that as human beings, we want that sense of closure, we want that sense of vengeance. But I think you have to rise above of what your emotions tell you and start thinking about it from a more logical point of view."

"You can't teach people that killing is wrong by killing someone. It's just - it's not logical."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as Echols talks to Morgan about mandating a DNA for all death row inmates and tune in tonight to see the entire interview.

So he's saying that he didn't deserve the death penalty because he now understands that he shouldn't have killed those three boys. Fine, no death penalty. Send Echols back to prison. He plead guilty even though he was granted a new trial. This man has fooled so many people and no reporter has yet asked him any tough questions about his case or done the research necessary to do so. Echols is a creep. Always has been.

"He plead guilty even though he was granted a new trial."

Shows that you shouldn't trust websites that claim to be about "truth" and "facts" – the state agreed on an evidential hearing, which would have resulted in a new trial. With all the delays and rescheduling this case is known for it could have easily taken five or ten years till they got out. But I guess this is not part of the "truth" certain people are promoting.

And let's please stop pretending the deal they signed is about guilt or innocence – it's a compromised both sides agreed on and which saved both sides a lot of time and money. The fact that it's possible to plead guilty while asserting innocence should be enough to make everyone wonder why such an option exists at all, what the state gains from allowing such a paradox to exist. Also not part of "truth" and "facts", I guess.

Alice: Please. Yes, the evidentiary hearing could well have resulted in a retrial. On the other hand, it may not have.
It was Echol's lawyers who asked for the Alford plea, as you well know (but fail to mention). Echols's lawyers
would not have encouraged him to sign it and accept the first degree multiple child murder charges had they not
felt that the "new evidence" was less than convincing. The state was foolish to allow him the Alford plea and the
proof of that is his behavior since his unfortunate release. As with O.J. Simpson, I have no doubt that justice will
        somehow prevail in the end.

The original intention of the negotiations that resulted in the plea deal was to skip the hearing and go ahead with a new trial right away. The prosecutor (Ellington) came up with the idea to enter a guilty plea instead, the lawyers refused (it is my understanding they were instructed to work under the premise their clients are innocent), the Alford plea was the compromise. In other words – the lawyers just wanted to speed things up with the new trial, the prosecutor was the one who brought up the idea of some kind of deal first.

If you want to read it in Ellington's own words – last paragraph:

Oh, and Echols mentioned in some interview that he would have accepted the guilty plea or whatever else would have gotten him out of prison ASAP, so I doubt the lawyers needed to do any persuading. You are probably confusing him with Jason Baldwin.

Other than some people who like to settle on childish insults, I do in fact know the facts of this case.

They pled guilty simply because they knew their new evidence wouldn't exonerate them. Their own lawyers even said as much.

Alice, reread the article you linked. It clearly says "Ellington said the defense's Alford plea was the best solution for all," NOT "The prosecutor (Ellington) came up with the idea to enter a guilty plea instead," as you claim.

"I said, hey, if they want to resolve this case and get their guys out of prison now, let them come forward with some other offer that they would plead guilty and then we can discuss that," said Ellington

You need to educate yourself on this case before stating your opinion. It"s obvious you are misinformed about Damien Echols. He did not commit the crime, he had no choice but to plead in order to get out. This precession is there so that state doesn't get sued and don't have to admit to imprisoning a teenager that was falsely accussed. This poor kid was stripped of his entire life. I feel horrible when I think of this injustice. We should be ashamed of our selves.

Terry Hobbs is by NO MEANS innocent, he is a child molester of his step daughter, he is a wife abuser, and among other things that will soon come to surface is a murderer, he and Jacoby. Do you homework! 🙂 Remember SIX people were punished because the Arkansas Police dont know how to conduct an investigation. Just a question to through out there to people, why didnt the cops investigate all family members of the boys??? Its the people that are closest to the victims that need to be questioned, not three teenagers that wore black and listented to Metallica. The truth will come out, and when it does I plan to celebrate!

I find the people here who are bad mouthing Damien are the same people who still believe in the information from the news reports out of west Memphis circa 1993, and chose not to believe in science and DNA testing for facts and quite possibly think that the world is still flat. It's okay if you wish to be relics of the past that sort of thinking will always keep you on in the dark. That sort of thinking will always keep you hateful and spiteful while the rest of us will be having a good time being truly free. It's almost with complete certainty that this response will generate a lot of blow back and negative reaction thus further cementing my statements. Have a nice day.

Not true, I hadn't even heard of the WM3 until they were released. A better way to describe us is we're simply not sheep.

And NOT true. Even the WM3's own defense have said the DNA evidence (the hair that may have belonged to one of the victim's parent) is not enough evidence to exonerate the three. That is why the WM3 took the Alford Plea.

Piers Morgan has become an embarassing joke and now has about as much credibility as does Damien Echols who is both a sociopath and a multiple child-killer. Do you know that he is now offering one-hour "Reiki" sessions in downtown Salem at $130 to gullible celebrity-worshippers? I am disgusted, as a resident of Salem, that he is now living here and only hope that he finds the KARMA he deserves. An unrepentant liar and con-artist if ever there was one. Funny thing is, this interview hasn't aired yet, due to a schedule change. So the people who are whining about Echols being interviewed had to seek out this website and click "play" on the video and all that ... it's not something they could have come across by accident. Unless they are regular readers of this blog which, given their opinion on Morgan, is unlikely.

I've seen this barely hidden jealousy a lot in this case. It's very odd, but it's definitely there. You know, the guy that would be the natural victim for bullying for a certain type of person somehow ended up with the cool friends, a pretty wife, a bookdeal, gets interviewed on TV ... must be hard for people who have failed in these areas to see someone succeed who they consider to be below them. And since it's easy to be hateful on the internet and a lot harder to work on improving your own life, they chose the first option.

I think they were talking to old Blatty here, btw.

You WISH supporters would forget about the victims, because this would fit your black and white world view.

To anyone not familiar with this case, please do not listen to the negative comments about the WM3. There are certain people who have an agenda regarding the case ( WMPD, DA's office, Terry Hobbs friends) who are signed on to Google alerts who troll for articles about them, especially Damien, so they can continue with their terror campaign. These 3 guys are innocent, evidence, will tell you that, but the WMPD and the DA's office do not want the world to know how much they screwed up and Hobb's friends and family do not want the worlds eyes to settle on him.

        This in response to Shepherdgregory:
Nice to hear from the U'K. Haven't been there in many years and sorely miss it, especially Bloomsbury
and Oxford! There are several excellent websites that address your question directly. You might want
to start with this one and on this page. The DNA evidence you speak of was a single strand of hair tied
into one of the knots that is most likely from the head of Mr. Hobbs. Problem with concluding anything from
that possible fact is that the three boys were often in one another's houses and the hair could easily been
transferred to the shoe or shoelace of one of the boys while at the Hobbs house. In short, the presence of
that strand of hair does not in any way prove that Mr. Hobbs killed these poor boys. But read more about
the case and decide for yourself. As you can see, mixing with this lot of Echols apologists is a dirty business.

If you have read it all and everything about this case it doesnt show via ur comments. What I wish some interviewer would just ask one time is about Jesse Misskelley's five (or was it six) confessions. He confessed the first time to the police. Yes, there were some things he got wrong, but there were things he got right that he couldn't have known unless he was there. After his arrest, he gave a recorded confession to his lawyer who was working on a guilty plea for him. After his confession, he confessed to the police on his way to prison, his lawyer while he was in prison and then the prosecutors while his lawyers were begging him to be quiet. How many times does a person have to say "we did it" before people begin to believe him. In addition, Misskelley reportedly continued to confess to his prison counselors that they had committed the crime. Why not get him to release those records to dispute that rumor? Then, why not ask Echols about his failed polygraph exam. Misskelley failed his also. It's time for someone to ask them some tough questions, even if they support them. As long as these unanswered questions remain out there, their credibility is suspect – to say the least.

No, actually it's sad that the new state prosecutor (who admitted he knew little about the case and didn't even know the victims names) accepted their plea deal and now three child murderers are free. The original prosecutor has said he would have never agreed to the deal and the three would still be rotting in prison where they belong.

Yes it is Fred Walsh's Lover. I think the plea deal was one of the greatest travesty of justices I have ever seen. Though I firmly believe the three are guilty, I was supportive of new trials that would answer all questions. Had I been the prosecutor, I would have tried Misskelley first and gotten and easy conviction. Then, I would have made a deal with him to testify against the other two and with their admissions I think I would have convicted them as well. I wish that is the way it has gone. The crazy plea deal left too many questions out there for both sides.

Wow. Blatty, you are bat**** crazy. Seriously. I bet you also believe 9/11 was an inside job, the Boston Marathon was a false flag, that man never walked on the moon, that Elvis lives, etc. Your selective re-telling of events and your downright LAUGHABLE dismissal of DNA is almost frightening. You would rather let a murderer walk free and leave three deaths unavenged than admit that Damien, Jason and Jessie are innocent. I've seen your comments across the web and honestly, you must devote your ENTIRE DAYS AND NIGHTS to talking about Damien Echols.

You are a sad, miserable little man, Mr. Blatty. Truly sad and miserable.

I keep hearing about all of the DNA evidence but I still can't find any reports on it. Are you talking about the single hair on the shoelace that could have easily been transferred to the scene by the little boys or is there something else I have missed? As I recall, there was no evidence of DNA at the scene other than that one single hair. I also thought Hobbs had an alibi while the defendants didn't. I'm pretty open-minded about the case but it seems with the confessions, failed polygraphs and lack of alibis, the defendants have a problem proving their innocence. Again, if there is DNA I'm not aware of I would like to know what it is.

Exactly, ForTheTruth. That is the extent of the so-called "explosive new DNA evidence!"

See the sites I reference in a post above for further discussion of the case and the "new evidence."

You cant find DNA evidence that would prove Echols did it – none of Echols, Baldwin, Misskellly was found at the crime scene. That should mean something...they were not there...and what about Terry Hobbs daughter saying that his father Terry was abusive to the children..including the victim come you Echols haters have nothing to say about that...You dont seem to care about families of the victims when they say that Echols is innocent... can you explain why the satan worshipping psychopathic nonesense dont hold up to day...Theres nothing in Echols behaviour today that would make him look like insaine psychopath.. do you see him foaming at the mouth ?? – while Terry Hobbs is not willing to come foward and answer the hard questions about child abuse in his own family ?? Can you explain that ???
Am I talking about the single hair on the shoelace – yeah, thats more evidence against Terry Hobbs than there was ever of Echols. single hair. Its more than what they had on Echols. So that should mean something !!! – Can you explain why Terry Hobbs daughter is crying on TV cameras about child abuse in her own family – when you blame Echols without any evidence ??? Hobbs has no alibi while the defendants did.... If youre open-minded about the case – have you done any research ???

Actually, there are TWO hairs. The one you're talking about was found tied INTO the ligature of a shoelace that DID NOT belong to the children. Also, you should have a conversation with David Jacoby. Hobbs' alibi is a fabrication. He's missing 2+ hours that evening that no one will vouch for, even tho he says he was with Jacoby "all night".

NO. There isn't any DNA evidence that exonerates the three. The evidence, a hair that may have belonged to one of the victim's father, does NOT prove he committed the crime or exonerate the three. Even the WM3 defense understand the hair could have been picked up by any of the boys before the murders. Just because Echols says there's DNA evidence that proves he's innocent and sloppy reporting repeats this falsehood does NOT make it true.

      • Das

Hello crazy frank – You say that there isn't any DNA evidence that exonerates the three. Funny, how you misunderstand everything – the fact that there is no DNA evidence of Echols at the crime scene, at the victims bodies, at the victims clothing, etc prove that Echols wasnt at the crime scene and that he didnt kill the boys. You cant murder anyone without leaving at least some kind of DNA at the crime scene – There was no Echols DNA at the crime scene – he wasn't at the crime scene. The lack of DNA evidence is what exonerates the three.

      • ForTheTruth

Actually Das, that is a flawed argument. Absence of DNA evidence does not exonerate a person. If that were the case, then no one killed these kids since there was no DNA evidence at all except the single hair that both sides agree that could have been transferred to the scene. While I agree with many of the arguments of the defendants (thought I believe they are guilty) I wouldn't use LACK of DNA as a defense. If that were a valid defense, the defendant's lawyers would have never let them plead guilty.

Das: That there was little physical evidence left at the crime scene by the WM3 does not prove they're innocent. There is a large percentage of crimes solved without physical evidence (DNA). The misplaced belief that there is always physical evidence left at a crime is known as the CSI Effect. It even has a Wikipedia page.

That there was no – none – zero physical evidence left at the crime scene by the WM3 – that should speak volumes – when you have violent crime !! AND yes it does prove they're innocent. – cause there was NO -none – zero whatsoever evidence that would make Echols the killer – nothing but gossip – There is a large percentage of crimes solved without DNA – cause the system sucks. – Without DNA evidence there should never be anyone in the death row.

Das: And that's not what the WM3 are claiming. They're pointing the accusatory finger at Terry Hobbs knowing full well the hair that may belong to him does not prove he did it.

    May 8, 2013 at 3:36 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Das

People are pointing the accusatory finger at Terry Hobbs because there's three different eyewitness that say they witnessed Terry Hobbs with the children – one hour before the murders, – There's Terry Hobbs DNA found at the crime scene and Terry dont have any kind of alibi, – there's family members of Hobbs who say that Terry did it and they call it " Hobbs family secret" – these people are willing to come forward, There's the fact that Steve Hobbs (victim) carried a pocket knife with him on the night of the murders – how come Steve's mother found that very same knife among Terrys other stuff later..? Frank – do you're research. And there is no evidence against Echols that would hold up in court today.

Where exactly did I claim I "to know more than the people who have followed and studied this case for years." Furthermore, how long does it take to familiarize oneself on this case or even become an expert? It's not rocket science.

Frank, it takes no time at all to get acquainted if you're reading the biased cliffs notes on the sites you claim to get your info from. Read the case files. It's not rocket science, but it WILL take you more than 10 mins to read through them. I'd suggest holding your opinion until you've read the many thousands of pages of case notes. One example I can give off the bat is that "west memphis facts" says Mr Bojangles couldn't do it because he was wearing a 'sling'. Then it links to the actual case file on the police description, and you will clearly notice it was NOT a sling. It was a 'velcro cast' that could be purchased at any Wal-Mart....probably a lot like a carpal tunnel wrist brace. This is Marty King's testimony. That is just one example on how that crappy site has injected bias. They completely changed the story and validity to the possibility of Bojangles as a potential suspect.

He is very strange yes, but the state prosecuters would never have agreed to release a murderer for ANY reason! They had already won their conviction. Don't kid yourself they(prosecution) only offered the Alford Plea because they knew the defense wasn't going to spend another 10 years and their own money on this case. It was a smarmy way to save face. Mr. Echols didn't help himself with his unusual looks and seemingly arrogant behavior. But as I stated earlier, you don't release a murderer unless...

Just one comment I HAVE to make. Hobbs' hair in the shoelace was NOT TRANSFERRED FROM ANYWHERE. Use your common sense. It was TIED INSIDE THE LACE.

Ok, I'm using my common sense. Actually, I'll go one step further and demonstrate it to myself. Hair on one of my shoelaces–check. Tie a knot in said shoelace–check. Hair now inside the knot of said tied shoelace–CHECK. Usually if something is on your shoelace, it will end up in the knot you tie.
