Bill Nye on the possibility of another deadly tornado: "It's going to happen again"

This morning, "Piers Morgan Live" covered all angles of the devastating "mile wide" tornado that struck the town of Moore, Okla. Monday and killed at least 51. Joining Piers Morgan live in studio, Scientist Bill Nye talked to the host about the possibility this type of tornado could occur again:

"You can't say from any one storm that this is a result of, let's say, climate change," Nye explained. "This is a much more powerful storm than the one that everybody talks about - May 3, 1999 - because it's wider, cutting a wider swathe"

Nye had one reminder for everyone:

"I just want to remind us all it's going to happen again," he said. "The statistic I saw was America gets at least 1,000 tornadoes every year. Last year in the whole of the year, 70 people were killed by tornadoes."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as Bill Nye talks about the construction of homes in Oklahoma.

Next time you have a 'so called scientist' on your show, you should check his statistical knowledge. If you go on

Idiots like Morgan are why climate change is questioned. He takes a tornado that is less common than in years past and points toward climate change disasters, then even uses the storm in NJ, NY as background? I find CNN the last real news on cable, he is a better fit at MSNBC.

What the heck are you talking about. Nobody is suggesting someone should be denied their right to free speech. What's being criticized here is the uninformed nature of some people's opinions. Contrary to popular belief, opinions can be wrong when they are not fact-based. That's one of the big problems we have today in our culture. Differing opinions are a great thing when people first carefully study the facts before forming them. But that's not how it works any more. Facts have either become irrelevant, or they have become tools to be used and mis-used to support pre-conceived notions.

At what point did America decide that Bill Nye was an expert on all science, including climate change? I think it's disgusting that he was politicizing this tornado while kids were still being pulled from the rubble of their schools.

I looked up the facts on tornadoes this morning. Since the 1950s, REPORTED tornadoes have actually increased. However, the reason for that is that we have gotten a lot better at observing tornadoes in remote areas and being able to tell the difference between an EF-0 and simple straight line wind.

Heck, he talks about tornado deaths last year as if 2012 was bad. In reality, 2012 was pretty quite in terms of tornado frequency. Less than 1,000 of them.

So the facts tell us that we do not even have evidence that tornadoes have been getting worse. And yet here is this "expert", still seizing on the moment to try to frighten us all. Shame on him.

We should wait a few days on this,Oklahoma's just disastrous,a Tweet

Yes, there are close-minded people on both sides of every argument. You're right. These days, "facts" (and I use that term loosely) seem to be used to support preconceived notions rather than doing it the other way around (i.e. forming opinions based on the real facts).

      • Jason B

I'd agree with you on that Scales, but Piers and Nye should NOT have made it their excuse to start on climate change (is that what it's named now, since GW isn't working?). They tried to use this as a political statement for climate change while the rescue efforts were still under way and people were suffering. So Bob is actually correct in this case.

        May 21, 2013 at 6:21 pm | Report abuse |
    • Carl

First, Climate change is not or at least should not be a political debate. It is a broad scientific theory based on tons and tons of data. Second, one of the first things Bill says is "can it be contributed to something like climate change? its too hard to tell". His main concern is that history has showed that it has happened before and will happen again so building codes should be more strict to prevent more loss of life in the future. This is not a political debate, do not try to make it into one.

      May 21, 2013 at 1:59 pm | Report abuse | Reply
      • Bob Smith

That's fine. But history has also showed zero evidence that climate change has made tornadoes worse. So saying it's going to make them worse is complete BS.

Superstorm Sandy is curious:hopefully a flash in the pan,but it's
the first I'VE heard of a coincidence of storms, and the imagery
today reminds me of Jersey, and the NYPD looking for corpses
        in a mountain of wood so Sandy's dragged up regardless;
hopefully the East Coast (nor anyone else) never endure that
again,we'll just have to see,but I'm always left with the before/after
images of the North Pole [1970=before,I think],and there is SERIOUS
shrinkage...where is that water now? Presumably contributing to sea-
levels rising, and if they CONTINUE to rise...

Bob, nowhere did he say this was a result of climate change. He said "It's not clear. First of all, you CAN'T say from any one storm that this is a result of let's say climate change." All he's saying is that we aren't sure if things are getting worse, but we should be prepared for more, because they are going to happen again.

Terrible tragedy in Oklahoma, very sad. I would appreciate more facts and less emotional distortion to enhance your ratings. The F-4 and 5 tornado frequency is half of what it was in the 1950-60s. The data is clear. The evidence shows tornado's even stronger, scientifically speaking, in 1890s and 1925 (Three state tornado) . I am a big fan Mr. Morgan , but we need facts. Thank you

There were nearly 1,700 reported tornadoes in 2011 according to the National Weather service. Having 14% of those tornadoes in one state doesn't seem all that outrageous when you consider that the vast majority of tornadoes occur in relatively few states.

Bill Nye is a TV personality. He used to have a show called "Bill Nye the Science Guy". But he seems to have morphed himself into some sort or expert on everything science. I remember not to long ago he was discussing another topic–it might have been crude oil–where he was way off base, but people still listened like he was an expert.

Piers, at least get a climate scientist to answer a climate question.. While Nye might be a eloquent speaker his engineering degree qualifies him to build roads and bridges, not comment with any level of detail on weather OR climate. I doubt if you would want to fly in an airplane designed by someone with an honorary degree (he has 3).. If your motive is to push an agenda, I am certain you can find a climate scientist (one with a climatology degree) to help push for or against. what ever agenda you wish.. but I don't think research has been shown that bad weather is directly related to climate change. BTW only 2 of the 25 deadliest tornados records have occurred in this Century

Apparently, Piers can't find a credible climatologist to make the linkage between a perceived climate change and tornado activity so he grabbed an actor who plays a scientist on children's television. Hope he was payed scale for his performance.

Bill Nye isn't a scientist, climatologist, ecologist, or any other ologist. He plays one on a kids tv show. If warmer temps are to blame why don't we have more tornadoes in July and August than we do in April and May? Piers and CNN have no credibility with anyone that isn't a low information voter.

Learned something new on CNN yesterday. Ironically, it completely obliterates Billy Nye's claim that global warming will mean more tornadoes. You see, 2012 was a very slow year for tornadoes. 2013 has also been a slow year (number of tornadoes, not damage obviously). Reason for this is the droughts. And 2013 is even slower due to cool weather.

So since the climate scientists are predicting more droughts for the Central US, and since droughts result in fewer toradoes, it stands to reason that climate scientists should also be reporting that we will see fewer tornadoes, not more.

I may have a solution which may minimise tornados from happening or from generating into a monster like in Oklahoma but only once spotted earlier enough by individual tornado scientist spotters.
