Stepfather of late storm chaser Carl Young: "For us as parents, to have our son go out on this is like sending your son or daughter out to war"
Amidst the aftermath of a violent series of tornadoes which ultimately cost a trio of researchers their lives, on Monday evening Piers Morgan spoke live with Bob Young and Sal Lucido, two men mourning the death of a storm chaser.
Carl Young was killed Friday evening as a twister is believed to have taken a surprising turn, bringing about the devastating reality his father forever feared:
"I was always concerned," Bob Young admitted to the "Piers Morgan Live" host. "Not only did they want to get pictures of the tornado for scientific research, they wanted to put probes that could measure all of the different things with tornadoes which meant that they had to place these probes in the path of the tornado and get out of there before the tornado hit."
Despite his painful loss, Lucido continued to endorse the value of storm chasers. The danger, however, he likened to that of a seeing your child go off to battle:
"The work must continue and of course as parents, we were horrified of this accident but we do also want people to understand, for us as parents, to have our son go out on this is like sending your son or daughter out to war," said Carl Young's stepfather. "They were professionals, and we respected that. But we feel, as any parent would, their son or daughter going out to war."
With a heavy heart, and with his voice cracking slightly, Young remembered his late child:
"He was a very gentle, very caring son, and I was very close to him, and his passion was doing this research, his passion for many years was the weather phenomenon," said Young. "He knew it was dangerous, I knew it was dangerous. And we just hoped that everything would be okay."

They were heroes .
My son, is, also, a hero for caring about them.

Hello Piers, one of the saddest stories I have witnessed on your show. Three fellows died trying to warn the rest of us how to get to a safe place! How ironic that they should die in doing so! My Prayers to all of them and their families. Thanks for how you handled this terrible tragedy!
Did I just hear a guest on Piers Morgan refer to Nature as a "War Zone"?......NEVER could I ever be that disrespectful and naive to refer to NATURE (of all things) as the ENEMY???.....Come on Piers Morgan....these storm chasers are thrill seekers – it's sad that they lost their lives but Americans have got to stop treating everything and everyone as their "enemy".....this was a TORNADO in TORNADO ALLEY for pet'es sakes.....Get REAL! Next thing you know Americans will start shooting their guns at the tornado....
No, not a war zone. The answer was to a question regarding whether or not the family supported this dangerous research. The analogy is clearly of a parent supporting a son/daughter entering into danger for a higher purpose – in this case research that will help keep people in the path of tornadoes informed and give them the best chance possible of survival.
No, I don't believe he meant it like that Beth. I live in Tornado Alley, and I Thank God for these Storm Chasers. Even if some are thrill seekers, I appreciate each and everyone. They continue to help keep my family and many others safe. I don't think many ppl can understand what those individuals mean to us here in tornado alley (Oklahoma City). I also want to say I'm so proud of my fellow Oklahomans. There are still so many without power and main roads. Visted Dr. yesterday and still so many stop lights out, everyone being very cordial and patient. Makes me very very proud. Some areas don't handle disasters in the manner I've found here. I met someone yesterday who's been without power since the 19th storms, Amazing the strenth, and yet they wouldn't complain because they understand so many others in worse shape. Amazing Spirit.
