Shark catcher Corey Knowlton: "We worked for four years to try to find one this big"

On the heels of a story begging for a pun, Wednesday evening saw "Piers Morgan Live" welcome the three men who reeled in what may very well be the largest shark ever.

Call it a "Fish Tale," or simply the "Catch of the Day," but Corey Knowlton detailed the "terrifying" moment:

"Any time you're that close to an apex predator, a food source, you really feel like you're just floating out there," said the host of “Jim Shockey’s The Professionals” on Outdoor Channel. "[It has] very big shark teeth. They move around like lightening. It was a really amazing experience. We worked for four years to try to find one this big."

Caught 15 miles off the coast of California, the mako shark is 11 feet long, and weighs more than 1300 pounds. With the official paperwork still to be filed, the men don't know for sure if it is in fact a true world record. But after Tuesday's shark-catching expedition, which yielded a relative guppy, Wednesday heavyweight adventure allowed for some scale-tipping irony:

"The day before, Piers, he actually caught a 250 pounder and he fought it really, really hard," said Knowlton of Jason Johnston, the so-called average fisherman of the trio who was presumably simply along for the ride.

"And he was sitting there, and he looked at it and said, 'I would in no way near want to have anything to do with a world record on one of these.' And the very next day it comes up to the boat. We look at it, and I look at Matt [Potter, captain of "The Breakaway.] I could tell in his eyes, I was like 'this thing is huge.' I looked at Jason, like 'this is why I brought you here for, to have a good time!'"

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, as the three men offer further details of catching a shark that took two hours, and a quarter-mile of line to reel in.

Why would you have these idiots on your show? Sharks are magnificent animals who are being cruelly slaughtered by the hundreds of millions every year. These "men" tortured and killed this animal for sport: that's as about as sick and pathetic as it gets. I guess they were trying to make up for the inadequacies in their pants.

Peter Wood you are 100% correct....they removed a female that is probably 25 – 30 years of age out of the breeding population of shortfin mako's. This is serious because they do not have large litters and the continuous finning pressure from commercial shark fishing vessels is placing many species near extinction.....hopefully the shark will be given to a research facility so that we can learn something from this animal; age based on vertebra centrum, dental measurements as a function of length, stomach contents, etc. Wish they would have let her go......

If any of you tree hugging libtards had half a clue and would've truly listened to the interview you would've heard they did donate the shark to a scientific facility for research and rue having a mold made for themselves yes my cousin Corey knowlton is a hunter and a very good one at that but he is also a very strong animal activists and harvesting animals is also good for population of their as well as our safety it keeps the breeding going just enough to keep a balance unlike some of this society that thinks its ok to live off othe people's dime it keeps a even balance in the species

Keeping the breeding (just enough) You have no knowledge what just enough is now do you? I thought not! If there was such a healthy population then larger ones would be caught more often. The only thing that could have made this act any worse is if the shark was with pups.

I watch your show on a regular basis and I am usually impressed with and often educated by your world views and comments, but I have to say I was very disappointed with the shark show. To harold those men as great hunters and sportsmen is a farce. Did the shark need killing, was it threat? What was the point of killing such a magnificent creature. Simply to stand by it and have your picture taken. Seems a waste of life to me. I hope they at least ate it. Brent Stait

With an estimated 100 million sharks killed each year by humans for consumptive and recreational purposes–how is the killing of a magnificent Mako shark something to be celebrated? Your piece was completely tone deaf to the tragic decimation of these magnificent animals. Wake up.

Enough with the grandstanding magnificent dead animals under the pretext that it is a "man vs. beast" scenario!! It's no longer a case of "man vs. beast" because we are superior in every single way. There is not an animal on earth that a human can't kill. We've proven that over and over again. Now, we are in a situation where our marine ecosystems are unbalanced and in serious trouble. Yet, we continue to kill the largest, strongest and best breeding sharks ... all so we can flex our muscles on the news and hope some chicks find it hot??? We all need to just grow up a bit and realize that the new way of the future is figuring out how to replenish depleted stocks of sharks ..... not how to kill more. The right thing to do stares us in the face every day. So why don't we do it? We're all just sitting around and letting these clowns remove the finest specimens from our waters, which only further upsets the marine ecosystem. The real question is ... what happens to that shark after it's killed?? Rotting in a flower garden? Maybe sitting on an ant hill? Or maybe just buried in the backyard? One thing that is certain, that much highly contaminated shark meat is never consumed. It's only wasted ... and for what???? Some exposure on the news. Ugh!

Shark catcher Corey Knowlton: "We worked for four years to try to find one this big"

The reason why it takes years to find a shark that big is because they aren't out there anymore. We killed them all. Thanks for removing one of the last remaining great specimens for your personal glory!!!

I can not believe that this tasteless piece even made it on the air. This is the idiotic mentality that is leading to an almost complete extinction of this species. By feeding the publics irrational fear of sharks, this show is capitalizing on the "Jaws" mentality to boost ratings at the expense of these amazing creatures. Piers, you should be ashamed of yourself for not only airing this story, but having the audacity to congratulate these men on their senseless kill. Why don't you try reporting on the truth behind this issue: removing this shark from our oceans for sport or any other reason is disgraceful. Humans are much more of a threat to sharks than they are to us. Not only that, they are an extremely integral part of our oceans delicate ecological balance. I guess it will take catching them all for pictures, trophies and overpriced soup to realize just how much we needed them. As I am writing this comment there is a teaser that actually reads: "If you're scared of Jaws-like sharks, do NOT tune into my CNN show right now. Or you'll never swim in the sea again..." CNN is a news network right? That sure sounds like an advertisement for tabloid trash.

The thrill seeking fishermen did it for ..well ..'thrill$' ( they're simpletons). The dude mentioned, " we really wanted to provide it for research .. and do a lot .. so people could learn more about the species." Ahem..These are NOT educated research conscious 'tag and release' shark fishermen. Learn from other tv programming, but thanks for the meaningless sensationalism to spark secondary awareness, Piers. This is pathetic. Piers Morgan you should be ashamed of yourself. You've proven nothing more then being as uneducated and blatantly stupid as these so called sportsmen. How can you even be allowed to air this utter crap when you consider the threat that sharks face and the important role they play in their marine ecosystems. There is absolutely no benefit in the MURDER of this beautiful animal. There is every benefit you can possibly think of by keeping it alive. Sharks are apex predators that are essential in keeping the balance and health of the ocean in proper working order. Do you have any idea how far you've set back the anti- shark fishing cause by lauding these buffoons as hero's? So here is my stance on this subject Piers Morgan, you can resign as the buffoon you are or you can spend the next 3 weeks showcasing the plight that sharks face and their importance to marine ecosystems all over the world.

Piers Morgan over the past few years has grown in popularity with some very good coverage of contentious news issues and has to be commended. However, todays story on the killing of such a magnificent Mako shark is absolutely crass and grossly misguided. You have helped to glorify these ignorant fishermen by calling them brave and congratulating them on catching such a large shark, which due to its size obviously is an important member of the ever dwindling breeding population. and even allowed them to compare it to the juvenile specimen they caught the day before. Is there no end to the decimation of this species.? In addition you alluded to their bravery in catching the shark. Where is the bravery? They go out in a large boat fish using heavy tackle and then kill the shark in the water and drag it back to the shore as a trophy. By airing this piece and glorifying them all you have done is make yourself look just as ignorant as the fishermen, and encouraged other people to try and do the same. In addition, you have also lost a significant amount of your own credibility

Piers, I am very disappointed that you gave time on your show for these fishermen to tell how they destroyed a large Mako shark. These creatures need our protection as over 100,000,000 sharks are being slaughtered each year by the worst predator on the planet, MANKIND. The marine environment needs our protection urgently if it is to be sustained for future generations. I would suggest that on a future show you time for conservationists to put forward the case for marine protection, I am sure it will be more eye opening and worthwhile than people telling how they killed a beast!!!!

A beautiful mature shark, killed just for fun. That is no entertainment, that is in no way cool ! This particular animal was a breeding female, since sharks reproduce slow and are hunted to a rate that is alarming, these breeding females are the ones needed to secure the existance of the species ! It is a crying shame that this is considered to be funny, cool and even just worth a mention, let alone a comment to praise this behavior. That time would have been much better spend on trying to conserve shark species !

Sorry boys being cruel to an animal that has probably lived longer than any of you – or with more grace and dignity than what you showed it is just not worth showing off about..

Perhaps free diving with a shark and actually getting to know what its like to be with something so powerful and beautiful 🙂 ah an animal that only feeds when its needed.. it doesnt go hunting around and making others suffer for hours on end just for hte thrill of it ?? or how big the kill can get ? Perhaps you all can learn a heap more off the shark then what we can learn from hearing about this sort of barbaric sickening behaviour?

We need all the sharks we can get in the ocean? If there were no sharks do you really want to see what horrid things would be floating in the ocean and washing up on our beaches??

Congratulations on helping to dwindle the Shortfin Mako populations even more, excellent job. With one of the most recent studies on shark populations stating that up to 100 MILLION sharks are killed yearly, you boys sure have done a fabulous job in helping to add to that number, because not only have you recklessly murdered one shark but you have also completely obliterated that FEMALE SHARK's chances of breeding in order to try to help and bring their populations up. Because the same way one DEAD shark counts, well one ALIVE (female) shark counts for even MORE. Congratulations, really.

Sharks are essential to the survival of our oceans and being decimated. The oceans are essential to our survival and if sharks die ocean ecosystems collapse and we in turn loose our main food source. Seriously irresponsible behavior, many sharks are on the endangered list and yet you promote shark catching. The only 'world record' worth considering is how fast the shark populations have declined in the last ten years. SHAMEFUL, get educated and up to date before reporting on a destructive activity. A more 'amazing experience' would be to view the guy that free dives with Great Whites, or the young Australian girl that films and swims with sharks. This should not be broadcast in a positive light! Sharks are vital to healthy oceans – yet we continue to decimate populations, millions a year. We're fooling ourselves if we think this is sustainable. I know a lot of people say this is a 'legal' catch according to California law but truly, globally the senseless slaughter of Apex predators needs to be banned! Not only do sharks have to contend with people out to catch and kill them for fun, pressure from shark finning is tremendous. THEN add by-catch on top of things. I am disappointed in the content of your show Piers Morgan – someone in your position should be educating the public about the scary statistics of our oceans – 90% of our shark populations gone. By 2040 – fish populations will be gone... Don't feed into the hype – please, please, please help in educating the public.

Its not man with a spear against mammoth to sustain a community, its a man replacing his virility with photographs. Equally is the fact that he gets any airtime at all. That animal was a vital part of the eco system that regulates the worlds species and in fact the very temperature of the globe. To kill a living thing just because it is large and magnificent just shows the exact opposite of the mindset that would want to kill it. These thrill-killers are small-minded and seriously lacking in compassion......the shark killers here are the farthest thing from magnificent that there could actually be! Grow up and figure out how to be real men!

For a journalistic endeavor, this one is weak at its best. Why couldn't the show been about the overwhelming obvious advantages of having sharks in the ocean. Or, an exposition on the cruelty shark finning trade and how general overfishing is ruining our oceans. CNN is continuing to lose my readership and viewership.

The only reason I know about this show was a friend forwarding it to me. CNN has already lost me, and this reconfirms my choice.

I don't understand why you Piers Morgan are rewarding poachers that are fishing an endangered species. Poachers are criminals they should be in jail not on TV. The oceans are the final frontier, it is an undiscovered realm, humans have devastated the rest of the planet. Instead of demonizing sharks You should promote the conservation of sharks. Makos are a critical part of the oceans food chain, without these apex predators there will be no biodiversity in the worlds oceans. Why don't you produce show that criticizes the shark fining industry?

Killing these important animals, when everybody who can think and read knows, that sharks are being killed in numbers of 100 million and more, each year. Doing this for sports should not be glorified on TV or in any media. How can anybody feel happy for killing these wonderful animals? Just like rhinos and elephants sharks should be protected world wide, because of the important job they are doing in the ocean. When are we going to wake up and stop to kill them out of greed and for the glory? A shot fin mako of this size is a very rare and important animal in the ocean. This female had pups in her belly, which makes it even worse. Is it right to kill it for triumph and a photo opportunity? And is it right for the media to make the people who kill them look like heroes? I think that there is nothing to be proud of.

It is very sad, that Mr. Morgan, who is being watched by so many people, makes those shark killers look like heroes. Looking at the comments, I think that he has shown bad judgment and very bad taste. It is very difficult to get any attention in the media by talking about the importance of sharks. Only this kind of atrocity will get you all the attention you want; even of famous people like Mr. Morgan. That is very sad because the ocean and the animals in them are a vital part of our lives.

How could you do this to beautiful animals? Sharks aren't killers, they're predators. They rarely kill people, only 6 times a year. That is nothing. You are such oblivious idiots. Sharks are becoming extinct very quickly. Sharks are apex predators, so if you kill all of the sharks, the ocean will be completely wiped out. This includes Phytoplankton which remove a great amount of carbon waste and provide 70% of our oxygen. If sharks eat stingrays, there will be nothing to eat stingrays, so the stingray population will rise and the things stingrays eat like shellfish will go way down. Then there will be no food left for stingrays. So all of the stingrays will be gone. This goes on throughout the entire food chain. You are destroying everyone and everything on the entire planet by destroying sharks.

I was very upset to see the Piers Morgan episode on the shark hunter!! I have always been a fan of the show and was surprised at the view that it is acceptable to kill an apex predator for fun and entertainment. The show seemed to be stuck in the 1970's Jaws era where sharks weren't endangered and hunting them was ok. Today sharks have become endangered because of threats that are the result of human activities including shark finning and getting caught in fishing gear. These are apex predators (at the top of the food chain) and play an important role in the health of the oceans.

Without them, the entire food chain can be affected, negatively impacting the entire ecosystem. Sharks are long-lived, mature late, and produce few young making them especially vulnerable to exploitation.

I am a shark fisherman (primarily land based shark fishing from the beach) and a devoted shark advocate. I want to commend Piers Morgan for covering a story like this one. I usually try to watch the show at least several nights a week and I missed this episode. I heard about this potential record catch shortly after it happened and was surprised it made it on the show so quickly. It's encouraging to see so many comments here on the side of the shark and sharks in general. Sharks need our help around the world. Especially regarding the criminal act of finning. So if people really want to get a buck for their complaints, they should be directing their outrage at shark finning, the commercial harvest of sharks as well as commercial long lining etc. These practices kill far more sharks indiscriminately than the recreational fisherman and do irreparable damage to many species bringing some to the brink of extinction around the word. This 12' 1,300 plus pound Mako shark that was caught is not yet a protected species and an absolutely amazing catch of a lifetime. I strongly believe in catch and release practices to be used when appropriate and as often as possible, especially for sharks. But if I was fishing in the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament that takes place every year out on Martha's Vineyard, MA and I caught this shark I would "not" have released it. Last I checked the Shortfin Mako is not yet a protected species and it's legal to catch and harvest one. Recreational fishermen are not the problem people. Commercial fishermen are and this is what is killing the species (especially finning) – worldwide.

    • Tim Martell

Thomas ... 5 million sharks die every year at the hands of recreational fisherman. Don't think for a moment that you are part of the solution because you're just another part of the problem. Also, don't try to redirect people. We can comment about whatever we please. This shark being killed is a complete outrage ... end of story. We are not only after recreational fishermen that kill sharks, but also finners and the commercial fishing industry. We are going after ALL of them. Shark fishing is totally on the way out ... people just don't see it as cool and macho anymore, In fact, it's viewed as something losers do. You're a dinosaur about to go extinct. (Hopefully before the sharks do) As for Oak Bluffs .... that will be over soon too. Every year it is becoming more and more of a fiasco and a definite liability. Shark killing is a thing of the past and people will never stop trying to protect them from people JUST LIKE YOU. By the way ... DEVOTED shark advocates don't kill sharks. They make sure they stay alive. Advocacy of ANY animal never results in it's death. To advocate is to ensure the animal is healthy, comfortable, humanely treated and mostly .... ALIVE. You're totally illegitimate. Everything you just said is a complete crock. Female shortfin Mako of this size are extremely rare. It may have (possibly) been legal but killing that shark was miles and miles away from ethical. As you can see, you are clearly in the minority. Everyone else seems to have a solid understanding about the serious situation sharks are in. Shark killers are truly considered to be the bottom of the barrel. Personally, I would NEVER kill a shark. I have to much concern for the next generation that will suffer greatly without them. I'm truly glad to say that I am not so selfish as to do my part (no matter how small) in eliminating sharks and making the future of our children just that much more bleak than it already is. A shark fisherman could never say that and it is especially a joke when shark killers call themselves advocates. HA!! What a pile of hot, steamy crap that is!!!

Thank you Tim for your insightful clarification as to the legitimacy of my comments. Advocacy, species management, etc. often/usually starts and is fueled by those who respect, pursue and admire a species and are concerned for it's welfare. The majority of sharks I catch are tagged and safely released. On occasion some are killed/harvested for consumption. Like I said I am happy to see so many people on this thread concerned for the welfare of sharks. If I am in the "obvious" minority on this thread so be it. I expected to be in this position in posting my opinions. Regarding recreational shark fishing versus commercial, I'm not sure where the 5 million number comes from but if this is correct it is a far cry from 70-80 plus million sharks killed at the hands of the commercial fishery and finning worldwide. Because of this ongoing and unresolved issue governments are being forced to consider total protections of many, many species. This is a good thing and many more shark species are added to the list with each passing year. Catch and release is an ongoing preference for those species that are still legal to catch. That said, until a species is completely protected and it is illegal to harvest that species, it is the right of the recreational fisherman to choose whether or not he/she kills that animal. Of course this is always an individual preference that quite often (as is the case here) draws serious criticism. You're absolutely right about this large female Shortfin Mako being a breeder and a rare specimen. Shortfin Mako are not yet on the protected species list. It is the anglers' right to have the option as to release this creature or keep it as potential world record and catch of a lifetime – which it is. One would have hoped that aside from research, some of the carcass would have also been processed for consumption, as Mako is excellent table fare. I believe (as a start) that there should be a 5 year plus moratorium on any commercial Shark fishing in US waters and for that matter worldwide. There should also be more shark species added to the ongoing list of those already protected not just on a state level but on a federal level. But until the Shortfin Mako, Thresher or Porbeagle (or any other species) is fully protected in offshore/inshore or costal waters – it is the right of the recreational fisherman to catch one and release it or to harvest one. Obviously the bigger a species gets, it is questionable as to why one would kill it. If this were a protected species obviously there's no choice in the matter. But the fisherman were specifically in pursuit of a Mako and they have every right to pursue this species. They landed on e of the largest recorder Shortfin Mako Sharks on record – the catch of a lifetime. Recreational fisherman usually get the brunt of public outrage and criticism 99.9% of the time. Sometimes it's deserved. In the case of these three individuals who caught a pending world record Shortfin Mako – I beg to differ. Commercial fishing, and finning worldwide is the real problem. FYI: Some species over the years have been designated as a protected species and banned for recreational anglers. These same species were still allowed to be harvested under a quota system by the commercial shark fishery. Commercial fishing, and finning worldwide is the real problem.

Out of the 104 MILLION sharks that are killed each year, 78 million are killed only for their fins. But what a lot of people do not know is that on top of the commercial fisheries devastating shark populations worldwide, 5.5 million sharks each year are killed by recreational and sports/trophy fishermen like these men! They are not heroes, or anything remotely to be emulated or admired. What they are is criminals! Hunting the largest sharks means killing females (which are generally a third to twice as large as males) at a time when 2/3rds of the worlds sharks are vulnerable and 1/3rd are either threatened, endangered, or critically endangered. It's destroying our oceans and in turn our planet. Healthy oceans need sharks! These men should be locked up, not glorified. This is just sick pandering to a wasteful disgusting industry.

The IUCN Redlist states Shortfin Makos as vulnerable and the population trend is decreasing, these highly migratory species have seen catch declines both reported and in the models.
Whilst I concur that the Shark Fishing industry takes the majority of the catch, recreational and sport fisherman do target the biggest individuals. The negative effect of the damage done is clear in that mature adults of breeding age with the ability to reproduce are removed from what has become a far more fragile ecosystem. It requires immediate action from all of us to help reverse the negative trends the Oceans are facing. The Oceans can't afford to lose individuals in the name of sport, science or research or for the "luxury" of Shark Fin Soup either.
The Oceans are the lifeblood of this planet, we depend on the Oceans' survival for our own,
"Therefore, as sharks become too rare, as with any species of plant or animal, the loss of a single individual may be too detrimental for the survival of the species"
I would invite the team and Piers to go diving with Sharks, learn more and help people to understand the real plight faced by the Oceans with the programmes sphere of influence.

Ever wear a pair of leather shoes, leather belt, ride in a car with leather seats?" Twenty-four species die off in the world every day. Ninety percent of all creatures that ever lived are extinct. The day will come when nature is tired of us, and will erradicate humans, and shark killing will have nothing to do with it.
