Jillian Soto on lack of legislation six months since Newtown: "We need to do something about this before another crazed man walks into an elementary school and opens fire"

With Friday marking exactly six months since the devastating school shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Thursday evening "Piers Morgan Live" invites Jillian Soto and Theresa Rousseau to place America's gun culture into context, and to speak to the notion that assault weapon sales have increased since Sandy Hook:

"It just shows you how screwed up this country has become and how you can see someone walked into an elementary school and used that gun to kill 20 six and seven year olds," says Soto, whose sister Vicki [Soto] was one of the six teacher murdered on December 14. "It just shows how awful things are and how badly we need change. How badly we need to do something about this before another crazed man walks into an elementary school and opens fire."

Lauren Rousseau was another one of the Sandy Hook Elementary School teachers killed by Adam Lanza, and half a year since, her mother continues to fight for stricter laws in hopes of limiting future firearm death and violence:

"More average Americans, the almost 90 percent that seem to agree with gun registration, will speak up," Theresa Rousseau tells Piers Morgan. "We need to talk to our lawmakers. We need to send them emails, we need to call them on the telephone and let them know how we feel about this ... Whatever it takes to make them aware that we are paying attention to what is happening in Washington."

Tune in at 9 for the rest of Piers Morgan's primetime interview with women continuing to mourn loved ones lost six months ago Friday.

Nothing proposed would have saved a single life at Newtown. What might have helped is easy access to GOOD mental health services that Mrs. Lanza might have used to help her son before he snapped. He could have committed exactly the same crime with a handgun and low capacity magazines just as happened at VT but I guess facts don't matter, do they?

So lets just do nothing about the increased violence, huh ? Lets just give out a free hand gun to everyone when they renew their tags at Sec of state every year! How about a free CCW card when you renew your voting card! The do nothing generation !!!

Why aren't we talking about the "Ding-Dongs." The ones without guns are now stabing people with knives. Our society on the whole is becoming more abrasive, aggresive and violent in general. When are we going to look at the other issues. E.g. parents turning a blind eye to their five and six year old kids playing these violent video and arcade games? I own an arcade and after Newtown I got rid of everything that involved shooting people.

@SM – Ray is not suggesting that nothing be done, in fact he suggested that mental health care access and quality be increased. What he is saying is that the magazine limits proposed or the idea of ending the sale of semi-automatic rifles would not have made a difference at Newtown. My personal view is that doing nothing is better than doing something that does/accomplishes nothing. Passing a law just to say you did something is not an acceptable answer.

sm, you've been watching too much CNN and Piers spouting off nonsensical BS. Gun violence and the rate of violent crime has actually dropped substantially. The 24 hour news media has propagated a myth that violence is on the rise. Read the latest FBI stats and use your brain instead of absorbing the tripe fed to us by the news media. Yes we all want to see less violence but the stats don't support what's inferred by the media.

Actually if there were an assault weapon ban, a lot more lives would have been saved at Newtown. And, in fact if Lanza didn't have such a powerful rifle, he wouldn't have even been able to get into the school. His weapon was so strong it broke down the glass doors. If he had had some other kind of weapon like a knife or a slingshot, he wouldn't have been able to get into the school. So yes strict gun control measures WILL help save a few more lives.

.. Allison.. actually you're wrong....Lanza rifle was a 223 caliber a center fire 22..not that powerful and a shotgun is a lot more powerful..and devastating...Bans have been proven not to work by the rifle bans that ended in 2004...they were a dismal failure...Evil can't be legislated away and bans won't stop any deranged psychopath.

Actually no Alison. We had an earlier version of idiot Feinstein's assault weapons ban in place from 1994-2004, and it did nothing (verified by the FBI) to stop crime or deaths, and definitely did nothing to prevent Columbine, which happened right in the middle of that period.

Yes we did Have an assault weapon ban, drawn up by a GOP majority, because it was in their political interest at that time. Then the So called NRA and Charlton Heston Whacko decided it was time to sell the heck out of all weapons and supply every person, country and militia, even our enemies. Get the facts straight!

None of the gun control proposals would have prevented the horrific Sandy Hook shooting...or any of the other mass shootings...There are those who think that another psycho like Lanza is inevitable for another school shooting... Then where's the outrage to put qualified armed security in schools.now..No gun control can stop a psychopath...but qualified armed security could...and in area's where armed security isn't an option, then teachers should be trained in the use of firearms ..like in many area's where this is happening now..If Sandy Hook had armed security it is highly doubtful Lanza could have got through those security doors..and security at the very least could have bought valuable time until the police arrived.

The Virginia Tech shooter had a history of mental illness, if he had gone through an extensive background check he wouldn't be able to own any type of gun. That's why background checks for ALL gun sales are crucial. More often than not a background check will help keep guns out of the wrong hands. Even if some background checks might not work for whatever reason, we have an obligation to try.

      June 14, 2013 at 1:51 pm | Report abuse | Reply
      • Notso

The Virginia Tech shooter did go through the mandatory NICS check for all firearms bought at a gun dealer. The problem was that he passed those checks because his mental records weren't entered into the system. So even if NICS checks for private sales were required, he would have passed it. So in essence, they would have done no good in preventing him from acquiring a firearm.

Guns might not be the only problem but they are a huge part of the problem. There is hardly a need for anyone, crazy people or non-crazy people to own one, and there is certainly no need for a civilian to own a high-powered assault rifle. Even the so-called law abiding citizens who own any type of gun for self defense are more likely to hurt themselves or another family member by accident than they are to kill an intruder. According to a Washington State Department of Social Health Services 72 percent of unintentional deaths and injuries, suicide and suicide attempts, the firearm was stored in the residence of the victim. There are too may irresponsible gun owners out there and owning a gun often does a person more harm than good. Every day, 33 Americans are murdered with guns – that’s 20 times the gun murder rate of other developed countries, and many of these are simply accidents. So while we should be doing more about better mental health services and reducing violent influences in our culture, the accessibility people having to guns is an equally pressing issue.

That's another question I have. Why is a rifle referred to as 'high powered'. Aren't most all rifles high powered? Aren't shotguns high powered? Aren't handguns high powered? What is special about an AR15 that makes it high powered?

    June 14, 2013 at 1:30 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Alison

The AR-15 is far more powerful than a handgun or even a shotgun because it can hold 30 round magazines without having the need to reload. Because Adam Lanza and James Holmes used weapons of such high capacity, that is how both killers were able to kill so many people in such a short time, Lanza killed 26 people in 5 minutes without reloading and James Holmes shot 70 people (killing 12) in just 7 minutes without reloading once. There is know way either of those killers could kill or wound that many people with just a handgun.

      June 14, 2013 at 1:46 pm | Report abuse | Reply
      • Notso

Actually, you are incorrect. You can get 30 round(and larger) magazines for handguns and shotguns. As I stated above, the VT shooter killed 32 people(adults) with 2 low caliber handguns and 10 and 12 round magazines. Tell me again what makes the AR15 so high powered?

Allison ...According to eye witness's .Holms AR style rifle jammed right from the start, and he did his carnage with a shot gun and 2 handguns. And Lanza had multi weapons with him too... A shotgun is by far more powerful ..And it's been proven that Lanza could have reloaded in 2 or 3 seconds...and he also had other weapons on him as well..Bans don't work...and armed security does work.

So basically what you're saying, Alison, is that it would have been ok if only a handful of people died? Maybe they were stabbed to death instead of shot, and that's much better? I'm not reading into what you said, or twisting your words. You said them.

Let me ask you this.... What are you really afraid of? The "bad guys" or the "bad guns"? Keep in mind that taking the "bad guys" out of the equation neutralizes the "bad guns".... Hence, the need for an overhaul to our mental health programs. Working with people to prevent violent crimes from taking place is the only answer, and as much as you hate to admit it, a criminal who suspects that the "good guys" will shoot back is a great deterrent, as is the case in "pro-gun" states such as TX.

Apparently, those who rule in England think much like you do and enforced Draconian laws, but the rate of violent crime has been consistent. Sure, gun crime has gone down, but not violent, fatal crime in general. Now, you see soldiers being beheaded in the streets, and nobody can raise a finger to stop it. Is that what you want here? If not, then re-think your stance.

The difference in so called high powered rifles is 1. Bigger bullets ( caliber), 2. gunpowder ( speed of bullet), 3. load capacity how many you can shoot off in a split of seconds, Not fully automatic, but put your smart hats on and judge : pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-etc in the same time you shoot a 22 cal. or 30 odd 6 cal. regular rifle!!!

I'm pretty sure you're looking for thirty-aught-six. Better abbreviated as .30-06, which stands for .30 caliber, 1906. And you're right, caliber does matter; this is why we make statements such as "the AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .223 Remington, which is a much, much, much less lethal round than the .30-06 in just about every way, shape, and form. However, against unarmed, unarmored targets at short ranges (under 10 yards), many pistol cartridges and common shotgun loads are even more lethal."

.223 Remington is not – repeat, NOT – a high powered round.

My deepest condolences expressed to the Newtown victim's families but this is not the forum for 'emotional rhetoric' to be played out.

The issue is not guns. Guns, in and of themselves, are not evil. The evil lies in the heart of men who are not angels. And while we cant legislate morality, as it is a indication of one's personal integrity and commitment to uphold good, we can legislate equity and liberty. To remove the liberty of one to carry and use a gun, blaming it on an act of terror, is not legislative equity. Lawmakers have to learn how to leave their personal bias home when they travel to Washington to do the business of the State. We all have personal bias and opinions, this is why Madison asserted, "It is necessary to control for the effects of faction." The point here is simple: Legislate with the purpose of preserving and ensuring both liberty and equity. You can call me a moderate if you like, and that is okay, but at the end of the day I know how to get results.

Gun legislation needs to be created in such a way to provide for reform on the federal level (level of appropriation), but allow states to maintain some level of sovereignty in the matter, seeing certain states such as Montana, have incorporated guns as a part of their culture and lifestyle.

For those of you who think tougher laws should be enacted regarding gun control, I have four words for you: Chicago and New York....

Background checks are already in place, but are not regulated and enforced as they were intended to be. That's still a non-issue, though, as somone who is intent on committing a crime will do so, one way or another. You should be much more concerned with finding ways to rehabilitate evil people or those who are prone to mental health breakdowns instead of making an emotion response to an inanimate object. We are not the "do nothing" generation, as was posted above – well, you may be, because what you propose would lead to nothing more than a fruitless "feel-good" moment.

All your efforts would accomplish is to convince criminals to seek out other methods of destruction, while further pushing our economy into turmoil with no tangible prevention of loss of life or limb.

    Again: Chicago and New York....

Try telling that to the young unarmed British soldier who got hacked to death in broad daylight in front of people in London, England, a few weeks ago. Did anyone watching bother to confront the lunatics with the machetes? NO, they just stood around and gorped. If that had happened here at least there would have been the possibility someone watching might have been armed, or at best the victim himself might have been. The British government's response was, we must all stand together to fight this extremism. Well defending oneself is not a collective act, it's an individual act. That soldier didn't stand s chance alone and undefended!

For all you who believed that armed security would solve the problem, I've got news for you: Columbine and Virginia Tech had armed guards and obviously that didn't help one bit. Fighting violence with violence is not the answer. Crazy people don't care about the level of security of public places nor do they care about the consequences of their actions because most of them are suicidal.

Last week the gun grabbing tabloid writer Piers Morgan reported on his show, that the Santa Monica shooter used a Bushmaster assault rifle the same rifle that was used at the Sandy Hook shooting...It is now known that the shooter did not use a Bushmaster but instead milled out an upper receiver himself, and pieced together a rifle from other parts..and either Morgan deliberately lied and made up his own facts or didn't bother to verify the true facts...either way this proves how irresponsible Morgan is on these stories because of his gun grabbing agenda...Morgan has a history of corruption and scandal and was once fired and escorted from the building of the Dailey Mirror for faking photos...Morgan can't be trusted for accurate reporting on anything he has a agenda on..this is not reporting news stories or useful commentary this is spreading untrue propaganda and it's not acceptable...It's mystery why CNN still keeps him on the air with his dismal ratings, and his misleading stories.

Guns are not the issue. Mental illness is the issue. Guns do not just up and shoot people by theirselves, no more than cars get drunk and kill people in accidents by themselves. But, you would try to ban inanimate objects, rather than address the real issue. Wake up.
