Patrick Kennedy on the potential legalization of medical marijuana: "What I really worry about...[is] that more people will use"

As medical marijuana and the legalization of cannabis remain hotly contested issues that are interwoven throughout the fabric of America, on Tuesday evening Piers Morgan revisited his recurring "Gone To Pot" franchise, inviting a collection of experts and advocates, legislators and law enforcers to offer their insights and commentary.

Joining "Piers Morgan Live" via satellite, Patrick Kennedy revealed his recently changed perspective, as he had initially been in favor of permitting pot to be used for medical purposes, but has since adjusted his stance:

"I found out the facts, and the facts are my initial thinking was like most Americans, I didn't think it was any big deal. Frankly, I thought people who had cancer or some medical need – every member of my family has had cancer – so I wouldn't begrudge them using something to mitigate the effects of chemotherapy for example," Kennedy explained. "Piers, when I learned the truth about the impact of us going down this road towards legalization, it really occurred to me that my original position was wrong."

Admitting that he smoked pot as a teenager, Kennedy expressed his passion for stopping a potential problem before it ever has a chance to reach a dangerous level:

"My fight has been for mental health and against addiction and trying to treat addiction, but the best way to treat addiction is prevention," explained the former U.S. Representative for Rhode Island's 1st congressional district. "What I really worry about with this reducing the kind of harm, perception of harm of marijuana, which is what's really out there now thanks to all this movement towards legalization, that more people will use."

Watch the clip for more of Morgan's interview with Kennedy, who refers to the legalization of medical marijuana as a "dangerous notion," and for the next edition of "Piers Morgan Live," watch CNN every night at 9.

Patrick never answered my question regarding how prison assisted him with overcoming his addiction. Could it be because he has never been? The privileged are seldom subjected to the same level of enforcement as are people of color and the poor. Additionally, their communities are not subjected to running gun battles and drive-by shootings. They have high paying jobs, therefore, need not fight each other when peddling drugs among each other. Baltimore had 20 shootings over the week-end, resulting in eight murders. The arrests and the illegal searches have fractured police/community relationships. No police force can effectively solve violent crime without the assistance of the community. Enough already!

If you truly want less marijuana and other drugs available to our children, then we must get the drug dealers off of the corners where they recruit children to sell to children. Free them from the environment responsible for the high rate of addiction and overdoes deaths we have today. That environment is prohibition.

Yes, I noticed his complete lack of an answer. I have used this same question on reformed addicts before and pointed out that, by their own standards, they should probably still be in jail. If you believe prohibition is the road to recovery for addicts then step and volunteer to do the time in prison. After all, it is for his own good.

What is notable is that, even with all those prohibitionists outnumbering the rational people on that show, it was still very apparent that the prohibitionists knew they were playing defense at this point. They have had their butts kicked in this debate over the last twenty years and this is their swan song.

Also had to laugh at them bringing up the old argument about how alcohol has a history in society and marijuana doesn't. Besides the fact that it really isn't true, and is just a veiled reference to the "degenerate races" mentioned in the hearings for the Marihuana Tax Act - How in hell would that make a good excuse for all the carnage that alcohol causes?

Prohibition either works or it doesn't. It doesn't depend on whether your grandparents smoked pot or drank beer. Prohibitionists have never been great thinkers.

Cliff, when I get that "alcohol has history / culture" talking point, I follow up with, "Oh, so it is a culture war, then, and the danger of the substance isn't as important as how many people use it for how long? Great! In the United States, we've had industrial hemp since 1611, medical cannabis since 1840, and a recreational 'reefer jazz' culture that pre-dates Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. How many more years of culture does cannabis need?"

As a former drug councilor, now retired. I'm against more young people having access to pot. It's like all the kids outside liquor stores, asking adults to buy them some booze. The slippery slope will show the bad idea of anything but medical marijuana. Teenagers have a hard enough time getting through school and dressing for success, to now have a clear path to getting pot off of adults. Plus the adults who raise kids in the shadow of drug use, will have a much harder time in life, than those raised around alcohol. Either is bad, but pot will make kids a loser, much faster. The enablers who live in a denial system, and think pot can do no wrong, are the part of the enablers of abuse towards kids. The really isn't anything social about kids on drugs, and parents who enable. Those who protest against the collateral damage of drone strikes, dismiss the collateral damage of a country who condones pot use. Any child lost to pot, is one too many. Legalizing pot is child abuse. As well as another element that will further overload the healthcare system.

So, your solution to the potential of a teenager asking an adult to buy him weed at the pot shop is to maintain the criminal control over marijuana production and distribution, where teenagers deal marijuana to other teenagers. Interesting.

I'm wondering why nobody advocated that strategy to reduce teen cigarette and alcohol use? When I was a kid, among my peers, 90% tried booze and 70% tried cigarettes. Nowadays the figures are 70% and 40%, respectively. Why were we able to reduce teen use without arresting adults, especially considering how much more available and addictive those substances are?

As a 33 year police officer, now retired, only because I knew I had to work hard at ending the worst social policy since slavery, I advise you to broaden your knowledge regarding the effects of prohibition upon society. I understand that you have a basis for your prohibition stance, but it is obviously quite limited. As one who knows the mechanics of the illicit drug trade and the strategies of those involved in the market, I can tell you beyond a reasonable doubt that marijuana prohibition makes marijuana and other drugs more accessible by children. Drug pushers hire kids to sell drugs to other children as a common practice, not by chance. With prohibition, we have created the worst possible environment for reducing drug abuse and addiction. This is the very same policy championed by the cartel and neighborhood gangs. You call this Smart Approaches to Marijuana?

Additionally, I am appalled by folks like you, Patrick and Kevin who have complete disregard for the communities and families that have been devastated by the drug war. From over incarceration to murders, families have been shattered, contributing to another set of social challenges. Baltimore just had 28 shootings resulting in 10 murders within 5 days. In Mexico and US neighborhoods, people are prisoners within their own neighborhoods.

A system of effective education and treatment without incarceration and violence will do wonders for this country. In addition to lower addiction rates, cops could spend more time addressing violent crimes and looking for missing children, crime would drop, millions of dollars would be saved and millions generated. Fewer arrest will translate to fewer people looked out of the job market, housing and student loans. The only losers here would be gangs, organized crime, the cartel and the people and corporations making billions in prisons and drug testing.

pretty sure no one is talking about legalizing pot for kids. not that they need it have you been to a high school in the last 20 years? you dont keep kids off of drugs though by making criminals out of their parents. trust me it just doesnt work. legalize for adults, restrict for kids. just like beer. thats the only sane solution.

the only way to keep marijuana from kids is to legalize and regulate, get that through your thick head, marijuana is readily available anywhere, it will not go away, wake up, the only thing wrong with cannabis is that it is illegal.

Keeping prohibition alive and breathing is a money making opportunity for both Kevin, Patrick and many others. Whether book writing, drug testing programs, consulting or advising "drug free" advocate organizations, to name a few, there's big money to be made in maintaining prohibition. Most of that money comes from our tax coffers, your pockets.

...Patrick Kennedy more than likely realizes the benefits of medical marijuana as it cures cancer and so many other other debilitating diseases. He can whitewash it all he wants but the fact of the matter is that it appears medical marijuana is a PROVEN successful medication providing relief and cures for many people.

I haven't the slightest doubt that he is opposed to industrial hemp as well, as it would provide employment for the nation and produce thousands of useful items from paper to textiles and from health food sources to a sustainable BIOFUEL, which this country would benefit from. It is a better source of ethanol than corn.

In this age of cyberspace, all one has to do is google, in quotes, the value of these two industries, "medical marijuana" and "industrial hemp", to discover that he is on the wrong side on this issue and may either willfully ignorant of the science of it all or is just protecting his own financial self-interests...

It is jail only if you don't agree that you need treatment. It is the newer, kinder gentler way of sending people to jail. They don't send you to jail because you did drugs. They send you to jail because you didn't agree with them. I think everyone can see how much nicer that is.

I simply believe that Mr. Kennedy and his political associates are being extremely narrow-minded. The fact that his family amassed their fortune during the First Prohibition (Alcohol), and that since the abolishment of Alcohol Prohibition the country has NOT lapsed into chaos should be a sign that the abolishment of the Second Prohibition (Cannabis) will have a similar or better effect.

It has been my PERSONAL experience that the consumption of cannabis is far, FAR less dangerous, harmful and impairing than the consumption of alcohol, and though there will always be a small minority of people who will, shall we say, act out of turn, I believe that in a society wherein cannabis is legalized, taxed and regulated, the vast majority of of-age adults who choose to consume cannabis would do so responsibly and with respect to the law, and in turn state and the Federal Government will be able to take advantage of a new and perpetually-expanding market that will provide jobs and much-needed natural resources for our country and planet. The implementation of a simultaneous industrial hemp industry will help us reduce the effects of deforestation dramatically and allow for thousands of hemp-derived products from soaps to oils to ointments to fuels to, of course, clothing, paper and plastics, and countless other products and services.

My home state of Florida in particular stands to gain an enormous swath of this growing market. Since the outbreak of canker in our orange crops in 1995 we, the so-called "orange capital" of the United States, have since fallen to dependence on tourism for the majority of our state's revenue, and now huge plots of agricultural land lay in disuse and in danger of being built over. With Florida's subtropical climate and rich, fertile soil composition, cannabis and industrial hemp alike could be ideally grown in these fields, and provide the nation with the highest-quality natural crop. I encourage the conservative Florida government, and URGE Governor Rick Scott, to consider legalization on these grounds, and would be happy to provide the legislature with copies of the Florida Responsible Introduction of Cannabis and Hemp Act (aka FL-RICH), modeled on Washington State's Initiative 502, for a clear and concise layout of the policies and procedures of a legal, regulated cannabis market.

Marijuana prohibition exists because of ignorance (which Patrick Kennedy is full of), greed (Patrick Kennedy qualifies here too), and outright racism (minorities are hurt most by this destructive policy).

Patrick Kennedy is a serious embarrassment to the Kennedy family name. He really has no idea that there are currently millions of people that use marijuana regularly with no problems and absolutely no need to enter his SAM clinic for rehabilitation!

What exactly are these so-called facts that he refers to? Perhaps he has been studying the garbage that the DEA has been writing.

Over 100,000 lives have been lost since 2006 in Mexico. A lot of them were children. Can our policies be more inclusive to ALL children, and not just American children? Mothers and fathers in prison for cannabis aren't helping their kids either.
Credibility is extremely fallible when you have something to gain from defending a bad and extremely unpopular policy. Such as the mental health drug rehabilitation centers.who are dependent on issuing court ordered drug counseling certifications. (Usually costs around $100.00 a week for 12 weeks, and if you are unable to pay a week, they make you start over) Most folks who have gotten busted for cannabis only end up in these places because they are forced to.
If these drug counseling places were dependent on only walk ins, they'd be out of business.

What I'm really interested in is figuring out which companies are already carving out niches in the newly emerging marijuana industry so that I can invest in them now. So far, the only promising public company of which I'm aware is Medical Marijuana, Inc. (MJNA), which also happens to be set to uplist in the next few months.

Most Prohibitionists eventually get to experience utter loneliness, also known as “the sadomoralist condition”—a form of existential despair as they begin to finally realize the utter futility and destructiveness of their entire life’s work. This is ultimately compounded by the deep realization that it’s simply not possible to prove any of the nonsense they’ve been zealously propagating for many long decades. It’s this type of loneliness that often turns their attention to a higher power, the one that usually comes in liquid form. This is a serious terminal affliction and not one that a psychologist, philosopher, or priest can help with. Eventually they may become trapped in a very dark place where they have literally nobody left to relate to. In such situations it is our civic duty and moral obligation to point their festering, lonely souls to the nearest cliff.

"Patrick Kennedy on the potential legalization of medical marijuana: "What I really worry about...[is] that more people will use"

Really? Because I'm excited that more people will use it. Maybe then people can get the stick out of their ass and actually debate issues calmly, and would be more inclined to take a walk in another's shoes.

Empathy is what is missing from the current political spectrum, from both sides.

Throughout the great design of things you receive a B- for hard work. Where you lost me ended up being in the facts. As they say, details make or break the argument.. And that could not be more correct in this article. Having said that, let me say to you what did work. Your article (parts of it) is certainly quite powerful and this is most likely the reason why I am making the effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Next, although I can see the jumps in logic you make, I am not really convinced of exactly how you seem to connect your ideas which produce the actual conclusion. For now I will, no doubt subscribe to your issue however hope in the foreseeable future you actually connect your dots better.

You pro marijuana guys have covered it all quite well. I will simply add that in 1937 the newspaper mogul William Randolf Hearst had his play in the prohibition of marijuana in that the less expensive hemp paper/cloth competed against his wood pulp paper.

I have just finished watching CNN WEED 2, and was trying to write a Thank you to Patrick Kennedy regarding his push for FDA approval of Medical Marijuana. I do not /know where he really stands as of March 2014. He had his facts completely mixed up, regarding the use of Recreational vs Medical Marijuana. I hope he and others, have had further education regarding the evidence of effective mecial uses, and the extraction of the "stoned" effect of THC- NOT being a part of CBD oil for many medical illnesses. IF anyone has had a child with untreatable seizures, you would be as frantic as the thousands of parents like me, hoping ONE day , to be able to help our children live.. and LIVE a better life because of Marijuana. NOT smoking , but injesting a low THC Cannabidiol oil. SHAME ON THE FDA for NOT moving on this huge issue in America. GO U .K.!!! They will be the true leaders in the research. Sadly, My son will continue to have seziures because I live in America. It is unjust. I am NOT in favor of Recreational Marijuana being legalized.
