"Piers Morgan Live, Rewind": The role of race, and reading the jury, in the George Zimmerman trial

Whether you fell asleep early, stayed out too late, or simply want to watch it again, we realize it's not always possible to get your entire "Piers Morgan Live" fix from television. As an answer to this, we offer the below labor of love – "Piers Morgan Live, Rewind" – dedicated and designed to getting you caught up and connected to the conversation.

  • Charles Blow and David Webb on a racially charged trial

Over the past weeks, the Zimmerman trial has made an intentional effort to keep conversations of race at bay in the courtroom. But yesterday, the proverbial floodgates were opened.

“Piers Morgan Live” invited Charles Blow and David Webb into the studio to weigh in on the role of race in America’s fascination with the trial and the case itself.

The New York Times Columnist, Blow, reminded us all that biases are difficult to identify – they’re not always so black and white:

“We don't know whether - how much race had to do with the actual incident itself. But I think one thing that is important to always remember about discussions about bias is that you don't have to articulate biases or even be aware that they are within you for them to be operational… you can think that you're completely egalitarian, you want to be that way, and that you can subconsciously act on biases. And so what we have to keep asking ourselves is what is it about Trayvon Martin on that particular night that activated a threat response in George Zimmerman?”

Webb, host of “The David Webb Show,” argued that it is the sensitive nature of these biases that call for national attention in what is thought to be a post-racial world.

“The fact is that when this white-shooting-black dynamic or white- on-black crime happens, it becomes a race charged environment when the special interest get involved for the first seven to 11 days of this incident. There really wasn't much coverage on many of the networks of this. This was an incident on going, then the special interest got - as I can call them, get involved and then you get some of the people who - well, they profit off race.”

Webb summed it up succinctly: “If it ended with a black man shooting a white or a black on black it would have been a different dynamics.”

  • Mel Robbins on the jury, day 13: “They were more alive today than I've seen them the entire trial”

Criminal Defense attorney and HLN contributor Mel Robbins spent yesterday in court following the Zimmerman trial. Last night, she joined “Piers Morgan Live” to report on the highlights, from the dummy to the jury, as the case comes to a close.

“Today was fascinating, Piers. First you had the defense witness by the last name Root who's the use of force expert who basically - he wasn't even really giving testimony. He was kind of giving a warm-up for the closing argument for the defense. And what was fascinating about his testimony, Piers, is that he would constantly look at the jury and you know what they were doing? They were looking back at him. It was like watching two people have a conversation across the room at a cocktail party. He was speaking directly to them and they were soaking him in.”

And if Root wasn’t compelling enough, a foam dummy was brought to the floor as a prop used to reenact the fight between Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. The jury was captivated.

“The jury stood up. All five members on - in the back row stood straight up. The four women in the front row, they leaned forward and they were taking copious notes and they were really paying attention, and just as you pointed out earlier, this was a turning point in the case. The state acknowledged that Trayvon was on top and it seemed like the jury had this - they were more alive today than I've seen them the entire trial, Piers.”

He lied about his finances and the existence of a second passport there is no reason to believe anything else hey say.

To George Zimmerman you insecure shooting unarmed black boy it's gonna make your situation any better? That's your problem, Tricky Dick. You are paranoid.

Keep in mind that george zimmerman was involved in a bitter domestic violence incident with his ex-fiancee, Veronica Zuazo. Zimmerman attacked her while the two were driving to a counseling session Zimmerman became enraged that she had come home late. They wrestled and he threw her on the bed, smacking her.

Zimmerman followed a man in his car until the police arrived. Daniel Osmun, the other driver, told police that Zimmerman was tailgating and that he spit his gum out the window "out of frustration.

zimmerman work as security He was fired for being too aggressive with patrons. He picked up and threw a women. It was pure rage. She twisted her ankle.

He was later ordered to take an anger management class.

Here's what happened", Zimmerman first approached Trayvon and asked him what he was doing there, Trayvon was scared and his first reaction was to run. Here's the thing Zimmerman grabbed Trayvon, and because of the pavement being wet, they both slipped. As a matter of fact,. Zimmerman hit his head on the pavement, and somehow,Right. But I happen to know Trayvon ended up on top of him. Trayvon hit him in the nose to try to get away. And How about this once he hit him in the nose and tried to get up, that`s when Zimmerman pulled his gun and shot him. if you look at the picture, the big picture, I mean, it's plain as day! He lied about his finances and the existence of a second passport there is no reason to believe anything else hey say. repeatedly stated he had never heard of FL's Stand Your Ground Law or had any knowledge of this law. Well, well, well; the record now reflects zimmerman professor taught this materials in his class, the same class he said zimmerman was "one of my better students he got a A" To the extent that he had some knowledge of self defense, he would have been able to put together a story that made some sense,”

Agreed. Piers Morgan is not a journalist. He promotes division and makes comments on our system which he does not seem to understand. He needs to move on and work with Nancy Grace.

I've been watching the Zimmerman trial and all commentary on CNN and MSNB by commentators and legal experts. Tonight, Thursday July 11th, I heard Pearce Morgan make the stupidest statement by any commentator on TV. He actually said, " George Zimmerman followed a young teenager and no matter what happened a young teenager is dead." Really? No matter what happened. This guy is an idiot. Later in Morgan's program he admitted that he knew hundreds of young blacks, no doubt many of them YOUNG TEENAGERS as was Travon Martin, kill each other every month!

Simple Question. Everything is the same but its Zimmerman that was killed. Make any assumptions you want about how it happened(no witnesses)but Travon killed George.
Also, do you think Jury nullification is a strong possibility.

Piers, You asked people to speculate about outcomes if Martin had been white or Zimmerman had been killed. What if Zimmerman was black, a member of local Neighborhood Watch (as many are), and every thing known or unknown, as well as the outcome, were the same?

Zimmerman claimed to know all his neighbors, he lived in the complex for four years, there were only three street names. How on earth did he not know the address! He had no intention of waiting by his vehicle for the police , he told the dispatch to have the police call him, to get his location. He was on the phone with dispatch and aw setting impatient that the police were too slow and he thought the punk would get away. If he was so afraid of him, he would he get out of his vehicle, unless he felt safe with his gun that would not have been visible to Trayvon

CNN and Piers Morgan may be named in a lawsuit for twisting this story into something it was not. Defaming someone without having all the facts is illegal.

The most compelling part of this case is not being addressed by the media or the prosecution. There are two parts to the confrontation between Zimmerman and Trayvon: 1. Zimmerman's head hitting the concrete. 2. Trayvon reaching for the gun. The moment Zimmerman feared for his life (according to Zimmerman's own statement) is when Trayvon reached for his gun. With that being said, it doesn't matter how severe Zimmerman's head injuries were. He feared for his life at that particular moment. Zimmerman could have had open gashes pouring out blood, but only feared for his life the moment Trayvon reached for the gun. Now, how does he explain accessing his gun and the angle of the bullet wound from his story? It seems like an impossible task from the way the prosecution got on top of that dummy.

For all you amateur sleuths like myself, here's an alternate explanation for the TM-GZ saga. The conflicting opinions about who was on top of at any given time may be explained by the fact that as in many street fights, the opponents may roll around in the floor or grass as the case may be. Whoever saw them would have seen either of them on top or bottom depending on the time that he or she saw them., If GZ would have struck his head during the rollover, that would account for the relatively light wounds on GZ's head. The screaming voice in the tape had to be TM since it is obviously coming from a body in motion. If there are three screams heard and then instant silence, it means that the shot fired could not have been shot from a stationary position as GZ claims. Igf GZ managed to pull out his gun during the struggle and TM tried to run away from him while screaming for help, it is entirely possible that at the moment he figured out that he would be an easier target while running and in the moment made a split decision to turn around and try to disarm GZ.
At that time GZ had a clear shot and it was over. TM was killed while standing and GZ would have been standing right in front of him. Here are the statements said by GZ that were carefully placed by him because they were impossible to prove from the available evidence. GZ says that he was attacked by TM. We all have to trust his word on that one, even though he was the stalker. TM told him in the midst of the struggle, " you are going to die tonight homey" highly unlikely and stated just for the self defense claim. If the person running and screaming would have been GZ, then the shooting would not have happened from a stationary position since the screaming person was obviously in motion, and not from the position that was previously described by GZ. The wounds on my head came from TM slamming my head on the cement. That was another statement with an alternative explanation that was made in order to claim justifiable self defense. The feeling of terror in the screaming voice, comes from someone definitely in great fear of his life being taken, not from someone with a weapon on his waist and with the ability to stop the situation by simply using it. So the most important evidence in this crime can be heard in the last few seconds of the tape. "Help"," Help", "help", Bang and then .............silence. In the movies, sometimes, people in great fear for their life will shoot and keep shooting even when the immediate threat is evidently dead, and they are out of bullets, GZ did not react in that manner because he was not in immediate fear for his life.

Why isn't this being addressed: The same Black celebs and leaders that are out exploiting TM's death and family had a chance to PREVENT his death and others and completely sold Blacks out. Pierce why don't you look into this and how it is the leading factor in such cases-INSINCERE BLACK VULTURE CELEBS AND LEADDRSHIP. I PASSED ON MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO STAND UP FOR BLACKS LIKE BOLLYWOOD STAR SHAHRUKH KHAN. I would expect that the media would not let these people get away with this.
