Kim Goldman on the Zimmeran Trial: "I don't believe this was racially charged"

With the recently reached "not guilty" verdict in the polarizing George Zimmerman case still being debated across the nation, this evening Piers Morgan invites Kim Goldman to join him with unique perspective and candid insight on captivating legal cases.

The sister of the late Ron Goldman, Kim's experience going through the infamous O.J. Simpson trial has lead her to become an ardent victim’s rights activist. Nearly two decades since what was then known as the "trial of the century," tonight Goldman reflects on a new century, and the new trial that has grabbed nearly as many headlines.

Comparing her brother's case to the George Zimmerman trial, this evening's guest allows that both have sparked a heated national debate, in particular with regard to race. However, in her mind, the comparison is unfair:

“I don’t think race is the center,” she says, speaking of the Zimmerman trial.

Continuing her conversation with the "Piers Morgan Live" host, Goldman insists that "our cases were drastically different.”

Despite plenty of focus having been paid to races of the key players in both trials, Goldman is calling for a broader viewpoint:

“I don’t believe this was racially charged and it’s unfortunate that that’s where the conversation always lies,” she adds. “I think we need to get bigger and more global and think about how we have a lack of regard for human life.”

Appalling! Where did Piers Morgan get Rev. Peterson? I would never believe in God if Rev. Peterson was my best example. He upset my entire family. R E A L L Y??? He is mentally retarded! How does he justify a murder by criminalizing a dead child on national TV, insult our president and being completely RUDE!

Let's just keep leaving out of CNN's coverage the fact he had been suspended from school. Suspected of burglary. The school investigator stated he had a burglary tool and several pieces of jewelry in his backpack. His text's clearly showed his constant "fighting". The drugs and guns. Let's just be biased and keep it out of the media coverage just like they did the trial. Shame on the media!!!

Then let's mention Zimmerman's criminal history including domestic violence and his racial comments on myspace. You can't try the child on the middle of the street. If all that you say is true....did Trayvon deserve a criminal hearing??My God! I was suspended for fighting in. high school and I lived! I raised kids and now work for the government. I'm a productive member of society with no criminal record. He was a kid! You people act like you have never been a child black or white!

You mean criminalizing a dead criminal don't you.

TM was kicked out of school for MJ and destruction of state property with his vandalism. I guess they too were criminalizing poor baby Tray.

Pierce Morgan needs to stopp the lying. This whole case is decided by one thing and the thought process, since he doesn't seem to understand. When I am walking down the street or if I was charged with protecting my house and my neighbors house is this. It"s not against the law to follow anyone. You can get yelled and screamed at, you can get questioned, but once you put your hands on me for some other reason that you love and want to protect me, you could very well be shot if I have a gun at my disposal. Are you telling me Travon couldn't out run GZ to his house? I am sure he could. But instead, he decided to confront the man that was following him. Then by all accounts that we have been given, he attacked and bashed GZ's head on the ground. If you don't think I, much less 6 women , want the right to defend ourselves in any way to stop from being beaten to death, you are a complete idiot or a liar. Again, I could give a rats ass wjether my attacker is black, white, green, or yellow. I want to live and I should be given the right to do so.

You must be one who think Micheal Dunn should walk for killing Jorsan Davis. Let face it White American see things way differently than Black Americans. We do not teach our young black men to run like a coward. We teach our young Black Men to STAND THEIR GROUNDS. And yes had Trayvon been white this case would have turned out a whole different way, for Trayvon would be home with his parents today.

I think that the Zimmerman/Martin case is the poster child for misuse of the neighborhood watch program. The program is designed to have residents observe and report, not challenge someone. The neighborhood watch is not an extension of the police department. It is designed to be an extra set of eyes and ears for the police department. Personally, I don't think any member of the neighborhood watch should carry a gun.

After a long period of time she can has healed nicely and someone somewhere should get her to become a spokesperson for your government to stop all this gun violence in the US.

    Ms. Goldman's ideals are well-placed.

I just wish that our racial understanding supported an infrastructure that enables ALL of us to say the things Ms. Goldman hoped for..."lead with love, volunteer, give back..."

However, the trial was seen through a racial prism.

As much as we want to say it was about the law, we miss the obvious reality,it was about race.

People of color have always had to have a different conversation about how to act in the general public when we are an "unknown."

I hope that for people who are or become our neighbors, we can extend the interpersonal relations that come from knowing and respecting one another.

Getting to this common level menas that we must "see" through the same prism.

Given our country's experience, that does not seem to be the way things are working. If we can all listen and give in to our different experiences, no matter how foreign, maybe we can learn to do better.

I am stock by kim goldman comments that oj simpson verdict was not about race? It the first time I am hearing that oj simpson was found not guilty by a 12 african american jurors, and we the viewers most believe that she is being truthful by saying the verdict in the oj simpson case was not about race. Did she missed that numerous protests and riots during the oj simpson case. I think she is using the zimmerman verdict to laugh in the faces of african americans.

Also, this woman who lives in a high class neighborhood and don't have to worry about her kids being racial profiled is telling african american parents not to worry out what to tell their black teens about these types of racial profiling.

All they want is a white on black or black on white riot! Blacks have already started it. When things go south, I doubt Pierce Morgan, Ms. Walker, Al Sharpton, Jessee Jackson, and all the others will be in hiding. We won't see them out fighting for their cause. They want the others to do their fighting for them. Peirce Morgan, you are a racist, anti- American and should be banned from the airwaves. You are a disgrace to the human race.

I am very sad that our Nation will not take responsibility for our fears, precieved notions and our racism. I am deeply offended to hear a Reverend call the deceased Tryvon a thug without knowing him. This level of extremism is significantly hurting our relationships; thereby hurting our country. We need people at the "table " discussing race , guns, and injustice that represent the majority of the people ,who are moderate in their views , not these extremist who are like gasoline on a fire. Why is the tea party in black face so vocal about the specifics of the ZIMMERMAN VERDICT? Generally speaking it seems counter productive to have Blacks like the direspecful reverend tonight and elder on last night conveying tea party views but with unacceptable instensity which feellike they have been put forth to reprimand the black community in general and Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton etc...

I'm sorry for her tragedy, but Kim Goldman said ridiculous things in this interview and I'm incredibly disappointed in Piers Morgan's reaction to her comments. He was so opinionated when talking to the Rev., and yet said he was impressed by Goldman's comments? What was impressive about them? Like many people, Ms. Goldman's wish for a post-racial America (and perhaps it is a sincere wish) makes her believe we can achieve it by NOT talking about race; by ignoring inequity; by ignoring that we have in existence laws that TARGET minorities; that a young white boy and a young black boy do NOT have equal access to safely walk the streets. Her comments were completely ignorant.

Because he and the other guest were hypocrites!!!! Liz Walker is also a so called preacher, but she is teaching 200 Martin's to form a movement and take this to the next level. Then, she turns right around and says this is not about race, but about the law, the law is what is wrong. They want you and I to kill each other, give them something to report about. They really are hypocrites.

completely agree...I was upset by her lack of intelligence...Trayvon was PROFILED...she has no clue about it in Beverly Hills...I am white and I lived there...just b/c those who have never been racially profiled don;t want to face the fact that racism exists in their world will not make it go away...facing it, having iopen discussion of it...is needed so that we can address it and make it better for all....she lives in a bubble. How dare she compare what she says to her chiold to a black woman whose kid can be singled out shot, and his killer go free for NO OTHER REASON THAN THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN. I also don't understand blacks who seem to hate blacks>>??? they are being just as racist....that Reverend upset me extremely....and kudos to Liz Walker, she spoke eloquently as did Santana...and Piers hit it on the head when he asked if Zuckerberg would have been in the same situation...unfortunately, he then lauded the ignorant and insulated Goldman.

My heart goes out to Kim Goldman at the loss of her brother. Due to white privilege she will never know the fears a black parent faces to raise a son in America. So therefore her comments to teach her son and black boys to only present themselves through peace and love are naive. WE as a black race have experienced racism from birth. With all due respect she may benefit from a training called Undoing Racism or other culture diversity training that will educate her and give her a more realistic global view of the real world.

In addition to being tragically naive, the contrast between her comments about her glee in seeing OJ Simpson go to jail and Trayvon's mother's comments about GZ speak volumes.

I also wish that Piers asked her what her purpose was for talking about how tearing up a neighborhood was not the answer.

Her naivete, prejudicial comments and desire for revenge imply a degree of presumed privilege that I have never seen from any high profile black survivors of this sort of violence, even the most privileged of blacks, the Cosbys, who lost a son to gun violence (by a white guy, but it was not a racial incident).

Well, from what I have heard on all the blacks talking about this issue, the black on black murders are OK. So, if its OK with them, why should any other race care? Its kinda like this, "I can be mean to my family, but you can't be" mentality or "its OK if I hit them, but only I can do that, no one else can do it." I watched the First 48 Hours today on TV and in 2008, two black men, taped duck three young black men, I think they were 19, 20, and 21? Walked them to the bathroom, knelled them over the tub, and tried to shoot them all in the head. One of them died, an honor student, one paralyzed, and the other serious brained damaged. All they got was life without parole, and should have been the death penalty. Like I said, the whole country is doomed. Enjoy the right to comment now, it will soon be taken away.

There's also plenty of whites killing other whites; most serial killers are Caucasian but that's not the issue at hand. She brought up what black parents should be teaching our sons without a bases for her statement. There are plenty of discussions about black on black crime that are being addressed in neighborhoods and national forums. Stick to the issue at hand.

Rev. Peterson is a sorry excuse for a reverent. As a man of God he should not have degrade a 17 year old teenager of what he use to do before he was murdered. Everyone at some point in their lifetime had made poor choices, and this can be said regardless of you are black or white, rich or poor. So why does he feel such hatred towards this kid, who despite the fact that this teen has never been convicted of any criminal activities is being looked at as a 'thug' by his own race and a pastor who is suppose to teaching God's message of forgiveness, is judging this teen based on is profile pictures which does not speak for the future outcomes this teen my have had.

Obama admitted to smoking weed while in college, which is a very common actions of college students who use their college years to experiment with drugs. But because Trayvon Martin was black seeing him with a bag of weed automatically speaks for is future. While what about white kids who come from high income parents and live in a high class neighborhood, what would you say about Lindsey Lohan's future and her parental up bringing.

the OJ case. to this day do not think he did it. he may have had some one do it. But I do not think he did it. my reason has been so clear to me. his kids were in the house that is what I understood. I do not think a father would leave the door open and two dead blood people out side for the to find. now if I was mislead to think they were in the house I guess am wrong. But that is what I understood. I do not think he Zimmerman was saying this f -- P-- due to his color but the ones breaking in to the house what ever there color was. and he didn't following him and there is no reason for the kid to hit Zimmerman that is not his right to go around hitting people in the faces. But Morgan you keep pushing the lie your good at it.

It is sad that Peterson came out to discredit an innocent child who was killed for not committing any crime while praising his MASTER George Zimmerman who murdered him. No wonder he is insisting that AA should go back to the plantation and believed that life was better for him then than now. And no wonder the name of his organization is BOND indicating that he is still living in bondage. No wonder he is against women's right to vote and so upset that African American man is President. No wonder there is no evidence of happiness in him.

Anyway I am not surprised because based on the name of his organization – BOND, he is living in bondage and will continue to live in it. Shame, Shame, Shame on you Peterson. Since you prefer to live in bondage, you will live in bondage alone because America have been liberated from bondage and no more going back to it.

First, where did Rev. Peterson come from? He needs to go back where he came from. Second, Kim Goldman does not have to worry about her kids because they are white! She would have had the same verdict as the other jurors because she feels Zimmerman had a right to kill Trayvon! She can save all of the bs she is shoveling out!. She and society needs to understand that blacks have to deal with situations much differently than whites. I am a black person who does not see color, but unfortunately everyone is not like me.

My heart goes out to Kim Goldman for the death of her brother but I do take issue with her opinions about Trayvon's case. If seems that there are some white people who are completely delusional about race and racism and Kim Goldman is one of those people. I have nothing against white people but if I hear another white person state that race doesn't matter and doesn't affect how many people are treated, I may just throw up. Of course it does not matter to them, because when you have 'white priviledge' you will never experience racism. There are plenty of whites who do understand and many of them were up in arms about Trayvon's verdict, but Kim Goldman's words are just another example of how out of touch many white people are and how disconnected they are from the black community – our struggles, our pains, our fears, our good times, our joys, our successes and accomplishments...our lives. I will say that I do believe Pierce Morgan is one of those people who does or at least tries to understand the black experience in this country. I admire his work.

I am white, and I completely agree with you, It seems that ignorance and prejudice have more to do with intelligence and common sense than shin color. ie Piers making dead on comment that Zuckerberg in a hoodie would not have been stalked, that insane black 'reverend' who upset me extremely and I am not even black, so I can't imagine how insulting his comments must feel to other African Americans, and lastly Kim Goldman, who hasn't a clue about the fact that racism AND CLASSISM exist. I go by INDIVIDUAL CHARACTER AND BEHAVIOR...OJ was guilty, Zimmerman is guilty....look at their character...race had nothing to do with OJ but his celebrity did, and he was more 'white' than I am in that he lived a pseudo elite white lifestyle...Kim Goldman I found extremely condescending and naive...singing kumbaya may fly in her 90210 eighborhiood, but I as a white person am concerned for my black male friends who are good people and yet may be killed SIMPLY FOR WALKING WHILE BLACK. All races need to wake up, address classism, racism, etc b/c unless we face it, how can we even begin to undo it?

Piers should go back across the pond as soon as possible and this country would be a lot better off,, we do not need him or his views. Ms Goldman has some good points but she is wrong in telling the Martin Family to sue in civil court as the Goldman case and the Martin case are 180 degrees apart and Florida courts have already told the Martin family and their attorneys that any law suit would be an uphill battle as the law states that anyone found NOT GUILTY cannot be sued in civil court for wrongful death under the law in Florida and the Martin family could wind up paying the Zimmerman family. Crump, Jackson and all the other high profile racist leaders and thats all they are never happy unless they are making trouble and getting the black to protect. Piers had a black minister on this evening that hit the nail on the head but of course Piers did not want to hear him because he was telling the truth. He is the only black man that has made sense and knows what he is talking about. The SYG Law in Florida helps more black males than anyone else since it was signed into law,,, check the records.

I think Kim Goldman is an asset to society unlike most people. She is articulate, wise and has a lot of commonsense. As for you Piers Morgan, you will just simply say anything to rile people up for ratings. This case was about a GUN – the thing Americans love best. If Zimmerman had not been carrying a gun – Martin would still be alive. That's not to say that I believe race was an issue because I don't. It saddens me to see the Martin family continue with their spite, hatred and anger. What good is that going to do. I am sure there son would not want them seeking revenge and stirring the pot all over the country with all these negative emotions. Why don't they instead focus on a good and positive message so that there son did not die in vain. Spread peace and love as a memory to their son. That's why I love being around animals because they don't have all the negative emotions that we human beings have. Revenge is not going to solve the problems in the world....it will just make matters worse. RIP Trayvon.

For Trayvon's memory and your own children's sake You can walk anyway you want-- just do not stop and attack.

Oh he's a pompous azz. I'd like him to address TM's fighting and Sizzurp use. And even ask about the photos and text from TM's cell that wasn't admitted in court. The judge let GZ's history go out over the airwaves but didn't let TM's get out. He's a thug PM. Heloved to fight, bragged about it too.

The only racial element in the Zimmerman, Martin tragedy and trial was against Zimmerman...If Martin had killed Zimmerman there would be no rallies.no protest,no activist involvement,no media exploitation, and no inappropriate politicizing from Holder and Obama...only another sad statistic..And for the tabloid Piers Morgan to keep "milking" this tragedy for ratings and his twisted agenda,is a disgrace.

Yes, Kim Goldman knows how to articulate her words, but I can do that as well. What she knows nothing about is racialism in this world. She is very naive as well is most people that is not African American. What really bother me is she said something to the affect 'we can have the same talk to all of our kids." NO we cannot. Your child can walk do the street without getting stop by the police, my son cannot. He was a straight "A" student when the police stop him and my Caucasian neighbor had to come out and tell the police he is a good kid. Your son can go anywhere without being profile, my son cannot. Piers Morgan keep doing what you are doing! Thank You for trying to bring awareness to people like Kim Goldman, but I don't think they will never understand from our point of view.

Martin was suspended from school for tardiness and graffiti. Claims of burglarly were dropped. Martin had no juvenille criminal record, and I use that word because he was in high school and had just celebrated turning 17 weeks before being shot and killed. It's interesting how a 17 yr old kid, who is now dead, is held to a higher standard and responsibility level than a 28 yr old adult. An adult charged in his past with unlawful acts, resisting arrest, resisting arrest with violence, domestic abuse... Kids post lots photos and send text that they do not realize later could be held against them and it's our job to help kids understand this is how the world works and protect them NOT sit here and pass judgement based on an extrememly limited knowledge of a person's character.

After watching Kim Goldman on the show, I loss all respect for her. People can agree or disagree with the Zimmerman case verdict, but should show some respect for the parents of a deceased child. Before she began to explain how the cases were different, she could have expressed her sympathy to TM parents. These people loss their son just as she lost her bother. It’s appalling to see such insensitive people in our society. Juror B37 acted the same insensitive way in her interview with AC; she never expressed any sympathy for the loss of a human life. She spent most of the interview praising GZ. It was George this or George that like they were best friends. She only changed her tune and expressed sympathy to TM family and went on to state the SYG laws needed to be change in a written statement after receiving back-lashing over the internet. Everyone believes her lawyer husband wrote the statement anyway. These insensitive people have lost all credibility. After watching Kim Goldman’s interview, glad her family received no compensation from OJ. It doesn't matter how well spoken a person is if they lack compassion for other human being they're just another heartless individual the public doesn't need to hear from or care about their opinions or views.

THANK YOU HONOR2..I WAS SO ANGRY WITH HER STATEMENTS I COULD NOT BELIEVE THIS WAS THE SAME KIM GOLDMAN..SHE "KNOWS" THE GZ VERDICT WAS RACIAL..JUST AS THE OJ TRIAL WAS..I,M FROM LA AND LIVED THERE WHEN THIS HAPPENED..THEY MOVED THE TRIAL TO DOWNTOWN LA FROM BEVERLY HILLS SO THERE WOULD BE MORE BLACKS ON THE JURY..DO I THINK OJ DID IT..YES..BUT, I DON,T THINK THEY PROVED IT FOR THE BLACK JURY TO SAY "BEYOND" A REASONABLE DOUBT..I,M WHITE..BUT, I,M SO UPSET OVER THE GZ VERDICT AND THIS CHILD BEING GUNNED DOWN..AND GEORGE FOLLOWED HIM BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK..NO OTHER REASON... FOR KIM TO BE SO DISRESPECTFUL TO THE MARTIN FAMILY AFTER WHAT HAPPENED TO HER BROTHER..I,M GLAD THAT SHE GOT A LOT OF BACK-LASH..SHE NEEDS TO KEEP HER MOUTH SHUT IF SHE CAN,T SHOW RESPECT LIKE HER FAMILY GOT DURING THEIR TRAGEDY..AS FOR JUOR B37..I WANT HER INVESTIGATED..LESS THAN 48HRS AFTER THE VERDICT SHE HAS A BOOK DEAL AND APPEARS ON ANDERSON COOPER..HER HUSBAND IS AN ATTORNEY IN STANFORD...AND THEY ARE TELLING US HE DOESN,T KNOW O'MARA OR DON WEST..I BELIEVE SHE WAS A "STEALTH" JUROR..SHE HAD HER "NOT GUILTY" VERDICT BEFORE THE TRIAL..AND SHE WAS THE LAWYER IN THE JURY ROOM TELLING THE OTHERS ABOUT STAND YOUR GROUND LAWS...

I CAN NOT BELIEVE KIM GOLDMAN THINKS THE JURY GOT THE VERDICT "RIGHT" IN THE ZIMMERMAN TRIAL..!!..AND SHE DOES NOT BELIEVE "RACE" HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT...ARE YOU KIDDING..?..RACE HAD "EVERYTHING" TO DO WITH IT...AND I AM A WHITE 60 YEAR OLD WOMAN..RACE WAS ALSO THE REASON THE VERDICT IN THE OJ TRIAL WAS "NOT GUILTY"..SHE WAS THERE AND SAW THE PROTEST....I,M FROM L.A. AND I WAS THERE, TOO...EVEN MARCIA CLARK SAYS THE VERDICT WAS THE RESULT OF THE TRIAL BEING MOVED TO DOWNTOWN LA..AND THE RACIAL MAKEUP GOT THE NOT GUILTY VERDICT. FOR KIM TO SAY THE ZIMMERMAN VERDICT WAS THE "RIGHT VERDICT" JUST SHOCKS ME COMING FROM HER...WHY WAS IT RIGHT..BECAUSE THIS KID WAS BLACK..??..WOULD KIM THINK THAT IF HE HAD BEEN WHITE..? AND MY PERSONAL BELIEF IN THE OJ TRIAL IS THE JURY DID GET IT RIGHT..THE PROSECUTION WAS TERRIBLE WITH THEIR CASE AND MARK FURMAN LIED..DID OJ DO IT..? YES..BUT THEY DID NOT PROVE IT BECAUSE OF THE MISTAKES..AND THE GLOVE DID NOT FIT..WHAT A SHAME..!!

As much as people (including Kim Goldman) may believe that OJ did it... they have no real proof because we did not see it with our eyes and unlike Zimmerman who admitted to killing Trayvon.... OJ did not. Therefore, the case of OJ will always be a "Who did it". We all the murder of Trayvon, was not a "Who did it". Did the police ever ask Zimmerman or did the prosecution bring up during the trial, "How Trayvon's body was 7 to 8 feet in the grass away from any concrete sidewalk when he was shot dead. Zimmerman could not have believed he was imminent danger of losing his life from a blow to his head on concrete. Take a look at the picture of Trayvon's dead body in the grass. A picture speaks a thousand words.
