"Piers Morgan Live, Rewind": Tracking James DiMaggio, A.W.R. Hawkins on more guns less crime, and a sinkhole survivor with her hero

Whether you fell asleep early, stayed out too late, or simply want to watch it again, we realize it's not always possible to get your entire "Piers Morgan Live" fix from television. As an answer to this, we offer the below labor of love – "Piers Morgan Live, Rewind" – dedicated and designed to getting you caught up and connected to the conversation.

  • Steve Jurman reveals details about Hannah Anderson’s rescue

On Sunday, the search for 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and her abductor James DiMaggio came to a dramatic close in the Idaho wilderness. However, days since Anderson's rescue and DiMaggio's death, questions about the final moments of the manhunt remain unanswered.

On Tuesday evening “Piers Morgan Live” asked U.S. Marshall Steve Jurman, a member of the team that initially located the pair, to share some specifics regarding the complicated conclusion of a story that started in California, but ended nearly 1,000 miles away:

“Friday we received a tip from the horseback riders that had potentially seen Hannah and DiMaggio and also a cat," said Jurman. "The cat is kind of what made them think things were a little bit odd, that these people were in the back country with a cat.”

To track down DiMaggio, it took enormous effort, and AMBER Alerts that covered multiple states:

“It was actually the 200th tip that we had followed up on. We were chasing tips all over the country. And then it became really significant when a state trooper with the Idaho State Police found the vehicle," Jurman told Piers Morgan. "At that point we dedicated all resources to the fugitive investigation in Idaho.”

Continuing to describe authorities efforts, Jurman discussed layout and logistics:

“To give you an idea of the enormity of the operation ... Cascade was a two-hour drive away from the trail head where the car was found. And then their last sighting was another eight-mile hike ... into the wilderness. It was a very rugged, remote location.”

  • A.W.R Hawkins on spikes in gun sales: “More guns, less crime”

Since his highly emotive interview with radio host Alex Jones, Piers Morgan has continued to invite some of the nation's most passionate voices to discuss gun policy. And in a country built upon the dynamic relationship between security and liberty, it is often the most polarizing voices that are loudest in the dialogue.

On Wednesday evening, "Breitbart News" contributor and military affairs PhD A.W.R Hawkins became the latest such “Piers Morgan Live” guest, using his appearance to specifically address the issue of increased gun sales following highly publicized mass shootings:

“I'm attracted to these stories on gun sales, because they demonstrate that more guns equal less crime, and I think it's important that we understand that when you, or President Obama, or whoever supports forcibly disarming the American citizenry, we make the vulnerable more vulnerable," said Hawkins. "We make the weak or those prone to attack more prone to attack and that's especially true of women.”

Though some maintain that there are other ways to prevent violence against women, Hawkins argues that arming them is first priority:

“That’s what's really on my mind when I think about the fact that when we take guns away, women cannot defend themselves. The numbers bear that out. And gun control will never fix this," he told the "Piers Morgan Live" host. "Gun control never makes the vulnerable less vulnerable. It always makes them more vulnerable. For me, I want to see not just men but women be able to defend their lives with guns as needed and that means they need access to them. As they have access to them, we see more guns less crime.”

  • Survivor Maggie Ghamry on the Florida sinkhole: “Absolutely terrifying,
    absolutely surreal”

Over the weekend, Maggie Ghamry and her three-year-old son escaped the nightmarish sinkhole that opened up at a resort near Florida’s Disney World. Two night later, they joined “Piers Morgan Live”, along with Richard Shanley, the man credited with saving their lives, to recount the near-death experience.

"Absolutely terrifying, absolutely surreal,” is the way in which Ghamry remembered the moments. "There is no way to be prepared for a sinkhole experience or having a building collapsing around you in any type of situation. It's something I never imagined I would experience.”

And as for Shanley, Ghamry hailed him as a hero:

“I watched him single-handedly make his way up into every room up and down the stairs. We were across the street videotaping as those events occurred, and we watched him as he accounted for everybody in the room - absolutely is a hero," she gushed, referencing the man standing immediately to her left. "I'm very, very thankful for him.”

For Shanley, a resort security officer, Sunday's sinkhole represented merely another day at the office - albeit a very dangerous, partially disintegrating office:

“I just let instinct take over. I had to get the guest out first. They were my top priority. I cared about my safety but not as much as my guests," he told Piers Morgan. "They were here on vacation. They didn't expect this. Nobody could face what was to come, you know, at that time. And you do what you have to do ... they’re your first priority.”

He's not blaming the parents for this is he? Hollywood nuts. Lack of right and wrong! This is what is wrong this nut's friend's stood by him. Even thinking he was some how in danger. Than it was well his childhood was bad who cares. People need to say look here. That kind of thinking is nuts. When did we step over in to the dark side and make it cool. And the good side was bad people for being okay?

Piers, you made up slanderous facts about Virginia's murder rate during your Hawkins interview – will you now correct yourself and apologize? You claimed Virginia had the highest murder rate in the country in 2009, when they were actually 24th, 23 states above them with higher per capita murder rates! Don't just make stuff up as you go, you lose ALL credibility on everything you say!!!

Jason, that's how he gets the uninformed to pay attention. He will never correct himself and his audience will continue to believe his absolute lies. It's comical how easily some people can get away with blatant lies in the media. Present the facts and let the people decide what's right and what's wrong!

Be nice if someone in Virginia – maybe the govenor? – would sue Piers and CNN for libel, demanding an on-air apology......start holding people accountable for blatant lies that aren't quickly corrected and apologized for

I second Jason's comment. Piers, it seems to me that you let your political views cloud your judgement when it comes to actual stats and news stories. Rather than doing that, why don't you make an actual case for gun control, a legitimate case. In my opinion, there really isn't one based on what the left is asking for.

Remember, the 2nd Amendment has noting to do with hunting or recreational shooting. It's intent is to defend the nation from a tyrannical government, and any other enemy of the state, foreign or domestic.

Using false informetion not only hurts your credibility, but is also a shame that you would stoop so low. I would like to see where your "2009 FBI stats" came from. Who provided them to you? Did you do your own research? I doubt it.

How many times will they allow you to lie before they fire you? Piers must have one heck of a contract to still be allowed to have a job. Better journalists than you have been fired for less. Jason makes the mistake in thinking that it's you that lose your credibility by lying (which this hasn't been the first time). In reality you being caught in this complete fabrication, (not a clerical error, but a fabrication) just to brow beat a guest, proves you never had any credibility to lose in the first place. No sir... it's not Mr. Morgan that lost his credibility here... It's CNN that lost it's credibility..

In my opinion, CNN lost it's credibility a long time ago. Piers is just the final nail in the credibility coffin.

State with the highest murder rate? Let me help you, Piers, IT'S NOT VIRGINIA.

TV talking head with absolutely zero credibility? Piers Morgan.

Perhaps you should take your show to MSNBC where emotional rants are equated with factual statements; you'd fit right in.

Piers, I believe I speak for all Virginians when I say we are highly insulted that you would outright lie about the state having the highest murder rate so you can try to prove a false point. Don't you have fact checkers on your staff? Are you too busy to make sure you understand murder rates in this country before you try to deny the fact that increased gun sales have not led to higher crime rates, but actually decreased crime in our state? News is not supposed to entertainment – it is supposed to be factual.

I was just at the point where I thought CNN was finally going back to unbiased journalism shows, then they brought Mr Morgan to their network.....they lost me again.
His lying about Virginia having the highest murder rate just proves what a liar and idiot he is. Why anyone would waste their valuable time watching this unAmerican moron, I would have no idea. Get him off the air if you want to keep ANY credibility CNN.

Here's an idea for you Piers, criminals are called criminals because they have no regard for the laws society has established. Hence, gun control measures established as a normal means of doing business are completely ignored by criminals. So by adding more controls for citizens to purchase firearms, you are simply making it harder for citizens to legally purchase firearms with which to protect themselves and their family. You are doing nothing to prevent criminals in acquiring firearms because again, they are not concerned with the firearm controls in place.
Furthermore, if you are so worried about your personal safety while here in America, feel free to go back to England, or wherever you feel you could be more safe. I believe the majority of America would either welcome your absence, or not even realize you were gone to begin with.

CNN says they welcome courteous discussions. Isn't lying to make a point discourteous? More to the point, it's bad journalism and reporting, but then neither are things that CNN seem to care about these days.

I never bother visiting CNN's site because of their disgraceful reporting and figured it's comment section would be full of slobbering leftist. But I was gratefully surprised when reading these, and calling him out. Does he or CNN read or care about this? Very doubtful, but I'll be back.

Great, Piers, if you don't know the truth, make it up. You're such a pompous ass. Interrupt, bully and make up data. No wonder England kicked you out. I only wish the US would do the same. We need MORE integrity in reporting, not less.

According to the FBI’s 2009 Crime In The United States report, Virginia came in behind 23 others states, including Louisiana, Maryland and Tennessee, for the number of murder and non-negligent manslaughter. Virginia didn’t top the firearm murder rate category either.

Here is the truth on this story:
If you have the misfortune to be familiar with Piers Morgan, the British former tabloid "reporter" and "talent judge" known on this side of the Atlantic as CNN's most overbearing gun control proselytizer, you won't be surprised at what he did on Tuesday.

It began during an interview with military history expert A.W.R. Hawkins, as Morgan pushed his theory that more gun ownership leads to more crime. Hawkins disagreed, noting that Virginia had recently experienced a significant increase in gun ownership, followed by a significant decrease in violent crime.

The insufferable Morgan then counter-claimed that, according to the FBI, no less, Virginia had the highest murder rate in the United States in 2009. Morgan's statement would have been true only if 25 states had seceded in 2008, however, and according to the FBI's 2009 crime report, []
