Ray Kelly on gun incidents in Okla. and Ga.: "We have as many as 300 million guns in this're going to see events like this"

With gun crime back into the news cycle this week following incidents in Oklahoma and Georgia, on Wednesday evening "Piers Morgan Live" asked Ray Kelly to share his informed perspective and expert insight as part of a primetime interview.

Five days since a trio of teenagers shot and killed an aspiring Australian baseball player, allegedly purely out of boredom, the commissioner of the NYPD spoke about the event specifically, and more generally, about the growing firearm issue nationwide:

"It's horrific, no question about it, and I think it just underscores the fact that there's way too many guns abroad in America," said Kelly. "We have as many as 300 million guns in this country, and it's just an incredible number. Unfortunately, you're going to see events like this take place when you have that number of weapons. We think that we're in need of sensible gun laws, federal laws."

On Tuesday, four days after the murder of Christopher Lane, rogue gunman Michael Brandon Hill opened fire inside a Georgia elementary school. Fortunately, he surrendered to authorities before anyone was injured, but according to Kelly, the incident only serves to emphasize the need to monitor those with access to weapons, especially in relation to growing instances of guns landing in the hands of individuals battling various psychological disorders:

"We need databases with more, reliable current information about individuals mental state," Kelly told Piers Morgan. "This person, we're not certain if it was his gun or if he got a gun from an acquaintance. If that was the case, it'd be even more difficult to check. But again, it just goes back to the idea that we have way too many guns in America."

We also need to remember that most gun owners are law abiding citizens and this kind of incident is the minority NOT majority.

Hey, Look at all the automobiles we have in this country and look at all the deaths caused by car accidents and drunk driving. I see many people , especially elderly and people who continue to rack up DWI after DWI driving that have no business driving. Maybe we should also use these databases to help determine who should drive and who shouldn't. I say that is a bigger threat in this country and causes more deaths and heart aches than incidents as listed above.

It seems that New York is a place where you would want to have a gun handy.
Is there any possibility of buying the Luger you showed the photo of several times during the interview?

If a black person is shot by a white person even in self defense..the liberal media and the activist will cry racism...If a Blackman shoots a white man it's a gun control problem and the "gun's" fault...And if a Blackman shoots another Blackman it's rarely even mentioned in the media and the activist are silent, like Chicago which had already numerous shootings already this week and it's not even being reported. The pompous snooty tabloid reporter Piers Morgan is again exploiting and capitalizing on this tragedy and using it as a vehicle for his gun control.agenda and to create controversy for his sagging ratings ..despite the fact that those kids and that wacko had those guns illegally, which if anything shows that gun control doesn't work.

This is yet another simpleton argument and a very sad article because it shows that those who are against guns still don`t understand that it is not the gun that is the problem. It is instead. the factors that lead up to a situation where young teens are "bored" and have "nothing to do" and who have no respect for human lives. Propaganda articles like this only doom us further by not addressing why this was done. We all know how it was done but that is not the question.

Gun control will never take away weapons from criminals and certainly isn't the solution to today's violence in America and no , I don't own a gun.
Black youth is growing up in broken homes and with no proper education have nothing to aim for in life.
I really thought that Obama might work hard to help the black communities instead he has taken their votes and ignored their problems.
He uses racism whenever it is politically expedient for him just like Ms. Winfrey who flippantly pleaded racism about a $ 35000.00 purse.
Yet they stand by and have nothing to say when real tragedies happen , shame on them.

,," Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunatley , nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force you are ruined ..The great object is that every man be armed...Everyone who is able may have a gun". PATRICK HENRY who hated Great Britain and the King.

Well said, it will happen all the time and since Mr. Morgan is fighting for more gun-control or whatever the solution might be, his job is secure as we are going to see event's like this over and over and over again.

People just don't have any respect of life, including their own life.

this murder has nothing to do w/ gun laws. Many cities w/ the strictest gun laws are the most violence. If the animals that committed this murder didn't have a gun, they would have beat him to death, like the two black teens that beat the 88 year old man to death outside his VA lodge. These are hate crimes, committed in response to the sharptons in this world.

Howdy! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when browsing from my iphone4. I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to resolve this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thank you!

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. However just imagine if you added some great visuals or videos to give your posts more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this blog could undeniably be one of the best in its field. Excellent blog!
