Hans Blix on the U.N. Security Council: "It ought to be possible to get the whole Security Council condemning the use of chemical weapons"
The crisis in Syria raises many questions in regards to the Security Council's lack of action, especially as the issue of chemical weaponry comes to the forefront. Tonight "Piers Morgan Live" welcomed Hans Blix, former U.N. chief weapons inspector and chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.
Blix strongly encourage the United Nations Security Council to come to an agreement:
"It ought to be possible to get the whole Security Council condemning the use of chemical weapons," he says. "They might not be able to point to Assad or point to the rebels but I think if Russians, Ukrainians, everybody would condemn the use of chemical weapons that would be already something. Only to have the U.S. and a few allies and a lot of quarreling in the security council will not be very impressive affair."
Blix would like to see condemnation now and accountability later:
"It is a different thing to have a condemnation on behalf of the whole world by the world's highest council, the Security Council, rather than having it simply coming out of Washington. I don't think - I think it's a secondary matter to point out who used it. Accountability can come later but now we will have quarrels if the US goes ahead rather than a untied security council."
