Robert Menendez on Obama's speech: "He's made the case that we are stronger as a nation in our resolve when we have the support of the Congress behind the president"
In a special edition of "Piers Morgan Live" that directly followed Barack Obama's national address, on Tuesday evening the host welcomed Robert Menendez from Washington, who share his immediate reaction to the president's speech:
"I think the president went step by step in directly responding to the concerns of the American people," said the Democratic senator from New Jersey. "And I think effectively made the case as to why those concerns are either unfounded to some degree in some cases, can be met in other cases, and the reason why it is important to be able to respond to [Bashar al-]Assad's use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians beyond Syria, and in the context of the world."
Answering a common criticism of the president, Menendez offered his explanation as to why Obama sought political approval for his plan to use military forces in Syria, rather than simply give the order himself:
"I think he's made the case that we are stronger as a nation in our resolve internationally, as well, when we have the support of the Congress behind the president."

I just heard Piers say it could take up to 10yrs to destroy Assads chemicle weapons.I work in that field and it could be done in wks. All chemical plants in america dealing with hazardous materials such as solvents or gases are required by osha to used a piece of machinery called an ozidizer.What a oxidizer does is burn up{Every hazardous material has a temp it will burn away at} the hazardous material and vapor while not allowing anything harmful into the atmosphere.There will be a small amount of burnt waist left.Maybe 1000lbs of the 1000 tons.Then you would have to take the 1000lbs of left over waist to a hazardous waiste site and have it buried.
I don`t know alot about the chemicals your dealing with.But from what I saw on tv. The chemical gas seemed to basically stay stationary.It dissolved,it didn`t linger in the air for weeks or travel accross the country. You could dig a large hole and burn it if you have on the propper personal protective equipment on and you were in an isolated area.
We were told that we were giong to make surgical strikes.That we knew where the chemical weapons were located and we`d aviod hitting them.We were told by the president that he was going to congress because he had talked to the military commanders and they said time wasn`t a factor.That whether a day or a month wouldn`t make any difference because all of our targets had been located and were under survellance. Our intelligence agencies knew where the chemical weapons were stored.How much he had 10000 tons.And we`d be able to make our strikes without setting off any of the chemical weapons.
Now I hear people saying" What if he holds us up by not telling us where the chemical weapons are at?What if he tells us it`s to dangerous where there stored. I thought we knew where they were at. Why not go in there with UN troops immediately and remove all of the chemical weapons immediately with UN troops on the ground and Tomahawk support from our ships if any of the rebels try to stop the UN troops. It really doesn`t seem like getting the chemical weapons was really what they were after. I think it caught them off guard. I think this was all a ploy to get to Iran. I think that they`re trying to get this deal foiled so they can get congress to vote against the peoples wishes and ok the strike saying Syria and Russia played them. Otherwise they`d already have the UN their loading that stough on hazardous waiste trucks.All that we need 500 inspectors,to get approved policies,etc. is just stalling.Pull up with trucks and load them.You know where it`s located.He already said he`ll show us.The inspectors can look it over in their liesure. I have to tell you.Everyone looks like a bunch of idiots.Russias put their hand out in friendship and your all spitting in it.
Oh yeah,one more thing. While you guys are throwing dirt all over Russia. Is anyone checking Cuba? Are you sure no subs have pulled up to reinstall their nuclear weapons?
Chemical weapons were banned 20 years ago. Let us, humbly, be reminded how many Countries, in this world, have illegal stockpiles on the backburner.
Syria opened a can of worms. I blame this on simple ignorance and stupidity.
There are people starving as I type. Any Country, in this world, who treats a human as if they were nothing, should be held accountable.
