Rick Warren on Washington, D.C. naval base shooting: "The first thing I did was get down on my knees and pray for those families"
Upon the backdrop of an evolving breaking news story out of Washington, D.C., in which a dozen people have been killed as part of a mass firearm incident, this afternoon Piers Morgan broached the situation with his guest, Rick Warren.
The American evangelical Christian pastor and author recently lost his son to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a devastating ordeal which has left him mourning for those impacted by Monday's military base shooting:
"When I heard about those deaths, at the naval yard, the first thing I did was get down on my knees and pray for those families, of the victims, those who died, and those who are wounded," said Warren, speaking of a community currently battling emotions that are all too familiar to him, and his wife, Kay. "My heart went out to them."

The NRA repeatedly states if all people carried a gun there wouldn't be the problem of a gunman on the loose. Just what we need are businesses, schools, Naval yards, movie theater's, mall's with everyone carrying a weapon. The outcome for law enforcement would be highly dangerous, take longer to take down the gunman responsible for the initial shooting(s) let alone get a grip on who is who. The NRA are in this for the money PERIOD, and nothing less.
It seems to me there is a need to analyze why other countries have dramatically less issues and the US has dramatic issues as it relates to DC, Sandy Hook rtc. Mass shootings must be brought under control. I am from Toronto Canada where life is very different. Look at the success of other countries that likely don't have an NRA or the equivalent. You feel that it is simple to correlate American gun rights to mass shootings. I disagree, if you look closely at the recent shootings you will discover 2 blatant facts.
1.) These shootings occurred in "gun free zones"
2.) These shootings were taken out by individuals with mental issues.
Let's start out with a bit of my own history. Yes I am a gun toting American. I also served the United States in two theaters of combat.
(#1) Let me tell you, there was no "gun free zone" in either Afghanistan or Iraq. Everywhere I went I had my trusty M-16 or M-249 strapped to my back. When I say everywhere I mean everywhere, this includes on a secure base, surrounded by guard towers manned 24×7 with fully automatic weapons. To be clear, I faced disciplinary action if I even went to the Latrine without my weapon! Now let's "flip the coin" and look at military installations in the United States, where service members, and vetted civilians, who are trusted with the free world's defense are not allowed to carry a weapon. These patriots are protected only by the outer perimeter which is designed to prevent a direct assault not a covert or internal attack. Why do you think Americans (and Brits) carry weapons on bases in combat theaters, because those service members need to be able to properly react to a hostile situation at a moment's notice. Trust me 5 minutes in a combat situation can seem like hours, and if your unarmed, well your left hoping and praying someone can react in time to save your life. In the military we call it the difference between being a "soft" or "hard" target.
(#2) This is the conversation America needs to address. This is a touchy issue with me, I am diagnosed with PTSD, so any talk about mental health and gun ownership makes me itch. The bottom line is that if an individual has been diagnosed with a mental illness that will probably lead to violent action should not be allowed to purchase a gun. Laws need to be created, like the laws that prevent individuals from purchasing guns for felons, that prevent individuals from buying guns for others with a "disqualifying mental illness". Like I said, this is a touchy subject for me, I am citizen that receives military disability for a mental illness that makes my blood boil from time to time. I do not want to give up my right to bear arms, at the same time I also do not want to see another "crazy" shoot up another soft target. This is a conversation that I welcome and embrace. This is the conversation that both you and the Media need to push for America.
Attempting to over legislate a problem will not lead to a solution. Magazine capacity restrictions will not protect anyone, I
have seen a marksman drop an empty magazine and reload within half a second, do you truly think that half a second makes much of a difference between one mag with 30 rounds and 2 with 15? Playing devil's advocate here, perhaps that half a second gives the shooter a moment of clarity to actually focus on a target. The same point goes to legislating a "gun type", put any gun into the hands of an individual with time, energy, and malicious intent and the public is in danger. Take away the right to own a gun, and a dissident will learn a technique to inflict pain and damage. Take a look at the insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan, it only takes willpower and determination to orchestrate an attack against any enemy, insurgents use IEDs and Rockets because their targets are armed in armored vehicles. Cowards attacking unarmed civilians can choose any weapon they can get their hands on, just look at the "mass stabbing" in Texas earlier this year. What America truly needs is targeted legislation, backed by statistics and adult conversation to get guns out of the hands of individuals that mean others harm. Any new legislation needs to continue to protect the rights America was founded on.
What about all the people killed each day by drunk-driving, drugs,gangs,knives,bats,fire.Not you, or your legislators, or anything else you can come up with will solve this problem. There's just to many guns out there. All you'll end up doing is make it harder for the average, law-abiding citizen to arm and defend themselves. The only way to stop a nut/crazy with a gun...is with another gun. Period. Like it or not. And I hope you never will, but the worst feeling you may ever have, is needing a gun very badly... and not having one. The old saying still holds true. When guns are outlawed...only the outlaws will have guns. So, which is worse? Sorry it has come to this...but it has. Get over it. I would suggest you go buy yourself a nice stainless-steel .380 PPK made by Carl Walther...And rest assured that your family will have some sort of a chance if 'mayhem' comes into YOUR family's life.
I believe one way to tackle the gun issues would be for someone with stature–like Rick Warren–who could lead a non-violent movement much like Martin Luther King did in the 60's....I believe it will take young people of America standing up to the gun lobbyists, NRA, and gun sellers and manufacturers in a non-violent way... Sit-ins in their offices, stores, at gun shows, and Congressional offices–all in a non-violent way yet dedicated and persistent in the same way the young college and highschool students did in the civil rights movement. I believe the "powers that be" would be more likely influenced by dedicated young people than they would be to listen to the "adults" who tend to be a part of the silent majority. Our country needs to learn peaceful ways of negotiating and someone like Rick Warren could be this teacher.
Ironic, isn't it, (for those who advocate more guns as a "safer environment " – the pro gun lobby ) that there are an awful lot of guns in the navy, but still people got shot today. Obviously a totally bankrupt argument.
The area is a gun-free zone. The Navy obeyed. The shooter didn't.
Military Bases do not allow the carrying of weapons. Try harder.

The problem with anti gun fanatics is that what they way cannot be achieved. We all know that guns don't kill, it's the people that kill. With that said, criminals will always have access to guns and if guns are not available, they will get access to something else. My main concern is not what gun shops sell, but the new technology that gives the ability to make weapons that cannot be detected. We need to protect the 2nd amendment and focus on making strict penalties. If we arm everyone, everyone will be safer.

Is this story newsworthy? A minister dropped to his knees and prayed upon hearing about a senseless tragedy? Who would expect anything else. There's nothing substantive–or even interesting–about this story at all. They are reporting that the shooter brought only a shotgun into the Navy Yard and shot a civilian security guard, took a pistol from the guard, and then shot a base security officer and took his AR15.
Incidentally, I feel that it was completely irresponsible of Piers Morgan to claim on his show tonight that the shooter used a "legally purchased AR15" to commit the crime when no one has determined that and the investigation is still ongoing.

Then, I began to feel very sad...knowing how difficult my own life has been in recent years and imagining how devoid of light I would be, were it not for the hope I have in Christ.
It was so much easier for me to have faith – with less questioning – before life became so painful. There are times, now, when I question God's plan...why it is that some suffer so severely, but I do know that He is here...even now. I question why some are able to harm innocents. God is not ordering all events in this life...only in the next. There is illness here, and there are acts of nature. There is also free will, and with that, some hurt others. None of it is right or just, but it is not God...it is a world not pre-ordained by God. But, it is only a precursor to a life without injustice or illness or pain.
In the beginning, something...the dust, the energy, the particles which collided to form the universe...those elements were created by a divine being. Either the dust particles, the energy, the God particle, the space in which the universe exists, etc., simply existed (without explanation) or God existed (without explanation) and created energy, the compounds which collided, etc. Which more logically could have simply existed IN THE BEGINNING without logical explanation? A divine being or the space now occupied by the universe, the energy necessary to create it, the compounds...dust, etc? Something came from absolutely nothing. It was a divine creator.

I wish there were no reason for guns period. Only those in active military and in law enforcement should have them. I think a national government gun law should be in effect; one set of rules that are followed by all the states. The NRA is in it for the money. They care little for the value of human life. People are well aware of the weapon not killing someone, but the person holding it (as an example). These posts should be by people who actually care about our country instead of those acting like they are drugged out or highly stupid.
If every military person on base carried a loaded gun all the time, how would you know which one of them has developed a mental condition? As you increase the percentage of people carrying guns, you increase the probability that a mentally disturbed person is carrying a gun.

You are NOT HELPING...YOU ARE INCITING the purchase of even more guns b/c people who fear a federal gun ban are listening to you and seeing the realization of their greatest fears. Please! If you care about this so much, realize there are two ways to view this issue. Realize that MANY MILLIONS of people have every reason to want a gun for protection...in their vehicle, etc. – not just in their homes – including women who are not physically able to overpower attackers. The answer is NOT to ban guns. It is not even possible in this country. We value our individual liberty and right to self protection too much. Yes, shootings went down in the UK, but other serious violence went up...stabbings, etc., and now, women in the UK have nothing with which to defend themselves. It's really not as simple as you make it sound, and you are incredibly rude when you shout over your GUESTS and keep repeating the same data, time after time, without permitting others to point out the weaknesses in your own arguments. PLEASE STOP FEEDING THE FEARS of Americans who suspect conspiracies to one day confiscate guns. I fear that you, specifically, will cause one of these individuals to lash out against the policies you support and do so in a way which will harm others. NDL...we have an extreme right and an extreme left...both well represented on the dial. We NEED reasoned, center...we need CNN to be that center. That means its hosts need to at least appear to be open to all data, willing to flush it out thoroughly (even if it does not support their stated opinions) and respectful of all guests and all opinions. We have enough shouting and disrespect of those who disagree with us...on both sides. There will never be progress if we each withdraw to our respective corners, plug our ears to new information and shout, repeatedly, the same mantra show after show. Has it accomplished the desired result? It has not. It will not. It will further divide. I like Piers, and I will watch when I enjoy the subject matter, but I cannot bear to watch him drive a wedge between us on this issue any longer. Piers, once again you go "rallying" to ban guns either by confiscation or by laws prohibiting possession of them. However, you have failed to address the fact that ONCE AGAIN, a mentally unbalanced individual committed the crime. Washington DC, like chicago, have very "strong" laws against gun ownership or posession. How well did they work????.
You also always fail to mention that in GB, once guns were prohibited, murders with knives went up....LET'S BAN KNIVES!!!. Recently we saw the horrific murder of a British soldier in broad daylight. Why you did not rally against Machetes??.
More people are killed by drunk drivers every year than by guns, yet no ban on automobiles......
The individual that committed the crime today, had security clearance issued by the government... Another example of why things run by the government DO NOT WORK!!! (Just like the British health system... You can always wait in line and read about the latest person murdered with a knife while you wait your turn.
Guns in america are out of control. Most agree that is a fact. But guns do not commit crimes, people do. Gun laws need to focus on people being able to obtain guns. In many of these mass incidents, which perhaps could have been prevented, such as Va Tech, it was later learned that there were mental health issues with the shooter known "in the system". Problem here, is to give mental health and other authorities a place to list those who may be a danger to self or others, just to slow down the process of buying a gun. Let's have a mental Health Data Base! With electronic medical records "EMR" it is a simple fix. ASK the provider one simple question. Is the patent being treated for any mental disorder, whereby patient may pose threat to self or others, OR has been prescribed medications which may cause mind altering affects whereby patient may pose threat to self or others? This can be a short term data base, or permanent allowing officials to check the true nature of illness with the reporting physician or expert to validate patients mental health. Most would likely be allowed to continue with purchase. But even if we saved one life, this is truly needed. Not a 100% fix, but a start to assist those who experience mental health issues, for whatever the cause. Courts nor other agencies have no place to send this data. Yet information is there – but always found, "after the fact". Virginia State Senator Jeff McWaters just last week, downplayed and discounted this life saving source of information and technology. Why? How many more lives must be lost before preventions are in place. We have the technology – legislators just need the guts.
