Kay Warren on her son's desire to obtain a gun to commit suicide: "He knew it would end it for him and he was just so determined"
On the heels of the nation's latest mass shooting tragedy, and less than six months since his own son used a firearm to commit suicide, this evening Rick Warren joins "Piers Morgan Live" for a candid and emotional conversation that touches upon mental health and gun legislation.
Appearing in his first interview since 27-year-old Matthew took his own life, tonight Warren is joined by his wife Kay as they reveal the circumstances surrounding their son's securing of a weapon.
"You knew that Matthew had a gun. Where did he get this gun," inquires Piers Morgan, before noting that his guest's son "had mental health issues his whole life."
Still clearly grieving, Kay quickly jumps in:
"Well, he didn't get it legally, that's for sure. The gun laws in California are very strict and they worked," she explains.
As the compelling face to face exclusive continues, Morgan wonders about the late Matthew Warren's firearm hunt:
"Had he tried to do it legally," asks the "Piers Morgan Live" host.
With his guests answering in the affirmative – "Oh, for a long time," says Rick Warren – Morgan moves on to Matthew's intentions:
"And he wanted one, as far as you're aware, for one purpose?"
Sharing unimaginable grief, the Warren's agree their son's desire to purchase a gun was for the sole reason of committing suicide:
"Oh, only one purpose," acknowledges Kay. "Because he knew it would end it for him and he was just so determined that he needed to have that gun."
Matthew Warren's goal was so deliberate and clear, he even went so far as to ask his mother for help:
"He told me everything. And he told me that he had found somebody, finally, on the Internet, who would sell it to him. And it had to be super encrypted, and it had to be, you know, this whole process ... he begged me to help him, because he couldn't figure out the process," reveals Kay Warren. "Here's my son in terrible pain, begging me to help him get a means to end his pain. And it's like my son, I can't do that. I can't ... I can help you live. I will do anything to help you live. I cannot help you take your life."
Watch the above clip as the Warren's add additional insight into their late son's search for a gun with which he'd be able to kill himself. Then, for the entire, hour-long interview with the senior pastor of Saddleback Church – currently the eighth-largest church in the United States – tune in to CNN tonight at 9.

I have been listening to the interview with the Warrens – their story is my story. My son took his life 19 years ago at age 29 with a gun after other attempts at suicide.
I found this in a book about grief –
"Guests of my life, You came in the early dawn and you in the night. Your name was uttered by the Spring flowers and yours by the showers of rain. You brought the lamp into my house and you brought the lamp. After you had taken your leave I found God's footprints on my floor.
This brought me some comfort – I hope the Warrens find some comfort in it also.
Suicide leaves us all devastated and looking for answers to the question of mental illness.
There is a misquote above – the correct words are "You brought the harp into my house and you brought the lamp."
Thank you for having the Warner's on your program. Mental illness is misunderstood. We need new laws to help our family members. Estrangement an epedemic & not being recognized as a tell tail sign of mental health issue.
Please, please don't give up on mental health issues.
What a PR job the Warrens did using their sons suicide to portray themselves as tolerant people when in fact his anti gay rhetoric and intolerance cannot be overlooked or softened by his AIDs work in a country intolerant of condom distribution.

It was so hard to watch a sweet, creative, compassionate man struggle for so many years and be helpless to intervene. The Warrens make a good point about how family members are shut out of an input on treatment decisions. So painful...

What was the diagnosis of this young man?
Why was he allowed to live on his own when he asked his Mother for help because he could not understand how to obtain a weapon on the computer?
That says everything.
What was this young man doing out on his own, without guardianship, I do not know, or caregivers?
God gave us common sense.
It's very difficult for parents and love ones to take care of there young adults with mental illness. There are laws preventing you to help or be with your child if they don't want you. Please try and understand the first people a mental ill person tries to distance themself from are the parents & closer friends. The way that the mental illness laws are written at present. No one can prevent a mentally ill person from living on their own unless they can prove they are a "danger." That's not easy. If the person want to be on their own.

Although I have not gone through the same situation, the husband of a close friend commited suicide. It's a horrible situation. The worst part es the unanwering questions. I felt their pain and we should learn from them and others as well. There is hope in the Lord! Pain is part of our lives here on earth. Either we learn from these situations or they will destroy you.
We need the medias help to educate the public of Mental health symptoms
Excessive worried & mood swings.
Feeling sad, crying of feeling down.
Confused thinking & ability to concentrate
Changing jobs. Wants to be one thing or the other for 6 months to a year.
High functional people can have mental illness.
Mood swings. High & low.
Withdrawing from most close family members( cut off is more common )
Injustices collector & always the victim.
Wrong attachment to wrong people.
Low self esteem or granger.
Tired, low energy or problem sleeping.
Alcohol & drug abuse
Six drive changes
Delusional, paranoia or hallucinations
Major eating habits changes ... Different from family norm
Estrangement ( silent epidemic)
Excessive hostility, leading to violence.
Angry all the time . ( parent, teacher, coworker, govt .... )
Suicidal
Please do not demonize people with Borderline Personality or mental health challenges. Mentally ill individuals are quickly becoming the scapegoat for the pro-gun movement. Suppose someone was horribly depressed 10 years ago and required an emergency commitment (per order of a court). If they are NOW productive, happy, and healthy, why shouldn't they have a right to defend themselves?
If the right "shall not be infringed", why are we blaming the mentally ill? Right now, it's far better to NOT get help for mental health, else you get flagged by the system and black balled for the rest of your life.

I have battled with manic-depressive (now called bipolar illness) since I was 19. I am now 71. It is clear to me in this season of my life that there is no cure. I have raised two children who now are productive adults. I now have five grandchildren and have contributed to the world with the publication of four books. I almost died three years ago with a ruptured aneurysm. Although I would not take my own life, I know deep in my heart, God wants me to do something with the pain I've learned to bear. I would like to help others if I can.
As you know mental illness is a life long illness. Unfortunately mental illness people are getting more violent or suicdial in United States than Europe. Dose stresses or overly medicated is playing a role ? This is an issue that needs to be address. Strangely what's not being discussed is estrangement from family that's liked with mental illness. I am sure the Warren family did what they could for there son. Mental health is a large area to cover. I pray the media gives it more coverage.
Society as a whole needs to be educated about mental illness. I am sure the Warren's were educated through the process of their son's illness, but one thing they need to know that it was not their fault. I know my mother thought my condition was her fault, and it was hard to convince her otherwise. The issue is not guns as much as certain activists would like you believe. If someone want to commit suicide, they would find a way. We need to understand more about mental illness and abolish the shame attached to it.
