Kay Warren on her son's desire to obtain a gun to commit suicide: "He knew it would end it for him and he was just so determined"

Following the tremendous reaction generated by Piers Morgan's exclusive interview with Rick and Kay Warren, this evening CNN is re-airing the entire hour-long conversation.

On the heels of the nation's latest mass shooting tragedy, and less than six months since his own son used a firearm to commit suicide, tonight Warren speaks candidly and emotionally about mental health and gun legislation.

Appearing in his first interview since 27-year-old Matthew took his own life, the pastor is joined by his wife as they reveal the circumstances surrounding their son's securing of a weapon.

"You knew that Matthew had a gun. Where did he get this gun," inquires Piers Morgan, before noting that his guest's son "had mental health issues his whole life."

Still clearly grieving, Kay quickly jumps in:

"Well, he didn't get it legally, that's for sure. The gun laws in California are very strict and they worked," she explains.

As the compelling face to face exclusive continues, Morgan wonders about the late Matthew Warren's firearm hunt:

"Had he tried to do it legally," asks the "Piers Morgan Live" host.

With his guests answering in the affirmative – "Oh, for a long time," says Rick Warren – Morgan moves on to Matthew's intentions:

"And he wanted one, as far as you're aware, for one purpose?"

Sharing unimaginable grief, the Warren's agree their son's desire to purchase a gun was for the sole reason of committing suicide:

"Oh, only one purpose," acknowledges Kay. "Because he knew it would end it for him and he was just so determined that he needed to have that gun."

Matthew Warren's goal was so deliberate and clear, he even went so far as to ask his mother for help:

"He told me everything. And he told me that he had found somebody, finally, on the Internet, who would sell it to him. And it had to be super encrypted, and it had to be, you know, this whole process ... he begged me to help him, because he couldn't figure out the process," reveals Kay Warren. "Here's my son in terrible pain, begging me to help him get a means to end his pain. And it's like my son, I can't do that. I can't ... I can help you live. I will do anything to help you live. I cannot help you take your life."

Watch the above clip as the Warren's add additional insight into their late son's search for a gun with which he'd be able to kill himself. Then, for the entire, hour-long interview with the senior pastor of Saddleback Church – currently the eighth-largest church in the United States – tune in to CNN tonight at 9.

I think that it is absurd that we are now using mental illness as a means for gun control. The truth is that a person who is mentally I'll and wants to end their pain will use any means necessary to complete their task. A mentally I'll person doesn't need a gun to kill himself. My father used a rope. Should we now ban ropes? NO!! WHAT WE NEED TO DO is listen and understand mental illness. What we need to do is stop treating mental illness as a closet illness... What we need to do is stop closing facilities for mental illness and start treating it like cancer, because mental illness is just as wide spread as cancer. 1 in 4 Americans suffer from mental illness every day! It is time to accept mental illness as a disease that needs to be treated.... Not swept under the rug. And finally, I do not understand why this is so news worthy simply because this person was the son of a famous minister.. What about the thousands of other non- famous Americans who have taken their own lives because of this same disease? Shouldn't we also be just as concerned about them and how it affects their families?

May I suggest you follow this show by interviewing a psychiatrist on what to do about a loved one who has suicidal ideation, what are the symptoms to look for. As a mental health professional I was glad to watch your interview but much more public awareness needs to be presented.
