Amanda Knox's ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito: "Nobody would ever stay in a situation like mine, my life now is a hell"

As the retrial of Amanda Knox is underway in Italy, on Wednesday evening Piers Morgan spoke live with Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's ex-boyfriend and a native Italian who was once convicted in the murder of Meredith Kercher but has since been acquitted.

Welcoming Sollecito via satellite from the Dominican Republic, the host asked his guest about the frustration that comes from continually reliving a case that is nearly six years old:

"How do you feel about the way they keep coming after you," asked Morgan. "Why do you think it is that they simply don't want to believe the version of events that you and Amanda have put forward?"

Sollecito, who was first convicted, and later acquitted, maintained his innocence:

"No, well, it's not just my version of the events or Amanda's version of the events. It's the real facts that tells that me and Amanda are innocent," he told Morgan. "I don't know what is going on in the mind of the judges. And I just think that in the Italian system, there's something really wrong in the rules that they sometimes are not respected or they are turned to hurt people. And they can hurt actually innocent people."

Asked by the host if he blamed Knox, a woman he'd known for only a short period of time, for leading him to become "embroiled in such a lurid crime scandal," Sollecito admitted things have been challenging, but stopped short of holding the girl from Seattle responsible:

"Well, basically nobody would ever stay in a situation like mine, my life now is a hell," he confessed. "But it's not Amanda's fault, the situation. This situation is a fault inside the investigation at [the] first site, and inside a prosecution that didn't want to admit their faults."

Raffaele is currently appealing a conviction of murder. The supreme court of italy overturned the last appellate ruling, and sent the case back to the appeals level. CNN misleads the american public by not correctly reporting on the legal process.

Not sure how they mislead, or how you clarified. In Italy an appeal includes new evidence and is heard by a jury. Sounds like a trial to many people. The first appeal heard much new evidence and the jury threw out the original conviction and found that they were not guilty. In the appeal to the Italian Supreme Court the court rejected the first "appellate" court's conclusions regarding the evidence (which does not sound like a typical Supreme Court duty to many people). Now we have the case being heard again at the "appellate" level – again with presentation of more new evidence and heard before another jury (sound like trial to anyone?) So it is not so simple and it is under Italian law and their system is obviously different than other countries. I will let you decide who was being mislead.

Why are the rest of the interviews (Mike Heavey, John Q Kelly) not included in this clip?

I don't like Piers Morgan anyway, but his interview of Raffaelo was particularly distasteful and brought to mind Piers gossip rag background. Dragging up the fact that he "used to work with Meredith Kercher's father" was unprofessional and snide. Ring the gong, CNN, and drag Piers Morgan off the stage.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this article. You have put into words so beautifully how I have been feeling since becoming a mother. We live slap bang in the middle of a village and yet I feel the absence of that village. There are no children playing together in the square, no mothers exchanging stories over the garden fences. Everyone is so busy trying to keep up with their own lives they have no time or energy to care about anyone else. I dream of that proverbial village every day. Recently I’ve felt an overwhelming need to do something to change the world in which we live. I started a blog to help keep me focused on what I want to achieve. Like you I strongly believe that change begins at home. I can sense a big shift coming and I want to be a part of this adventure. I look forward to exploring the rest of your website. I feel I have found a ‘kindred spirit’ x x x
