READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
Six and a half months since the bombings at the Boston marathon, and less than 24 hours removed from the same city's triumph in the 2013 World Series, on Thursday evening "Piers Morgan Live" welcomed Marc Fucarile for an emotional primetime interview.
The last victim to leave the hospital, and the worst injured of all the survivors, Fucarile had one of his legs amputated as a result of the terror attacks, and was hurt so badly that his family stalled fundraising efforts for fear he wouldn't survive.
But throughout his recovery, the Stoneham, Mass. native remained a loyal Boston sports fan, and Wednesday's clinching win by the Red Sox offered an appropriate visual paired alongside the city's proud "Boston Strong" narrative:
"To me it means the first responders, the people in our city. I don't take it as - for us the victims. I don't feel it fits us," Fucarile explained. "The victims are strong, don't get me wrong, but I feel more of the city, the people that support us, the victims, that is Boston Strong. That's the backbone behind us, the teams, you know, all the teams - local teams - here in Boston, All just the Boston people and everybody across America, it's not just Boston Strong. You know, this nation is strong and everybody has been supporting us and that's what I feel that Boston Strong is about."
During the 100 days Fucarile spent in the hospital he received visits from several Red Sox players, including Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury. Seeing his home town team win the World Series – the team's first title captured on the field at Fenway Park in more than 100 years – brought things full circle:
"The Red Sox were behind all us victims the whole time. In my ICU room, four of them came to visit me after they were visiting children on the floor above me at Mass General Hospital ... of course, I was still there and they came down, paid me a visit, autographed a ball, hung out, chatted it up. This team's the real deal. They really [were right] behind us."
