Man who paid $350K for the right to kill a black rhino: "I will say to Bob Barker...the price was wrong"
Amidst a flurry of violent criticism across multiple social media platforms, on Thursday evening Corey Knowlton joined "Piers Morgan Live" for an exclusive primetime interview, during which he offered his explanation as to why he willingly paid 350-thousand dollars for the chance to hunt a back rhinoceros.
As winner of the Dallas Safari Club's auction, Knowlton earned a hunting permit from the Namibian government, and is slated to travel to the southern African nation of Namibia for what he calls a conservation hunt.
Having joined the program last summer after reeling in a record-breaking shark, on Thursday Knowlton returned for a live discussion, and revealed why he selected the CNN host as the man with whom he was willing to share his story:
"Piers, just like the gun thing, you've been attacked just the way I am about your views of guns, okay? We're human beings, both you and I," noted the host of “Jim Shockey’s The Professionals” on Outdoor Channel. "I don't think you should be hated because you believe that. I don't think I should be hated because I lead my life a certain way. They're threatening my children, Piers. They're threatening to kill me."
Knowlton fancies himself an expert hunter, and he views his work as part of the natural cycle of life, in which population is controlled, and species are protected. Suffice it to say, the masses haven't shared his perspective:
"I had no idea that it would be this visceral. I had no idea that they would be attacking my two-year-old daughter and my seven-year-old daughter and my beautiful young wife, and they'd want to kill us all and burn us, and make a "Saw" movie out of us," said Knowlton. "These are the type of things that I'm getting, okay?"
But the list of those lobbing criticism at Knowlton and the organization arranging his hunt isn't limited to simply faceless users of Twitter and Facebook. Legendary game show host Bob Barker has also voiced his objections, penning an open letter to PETA in which he offered the following notion:
"True conservationists are those who pay money to keep rhinos alive—in the form of highly lucrative eco-tourism—as opposed to those who pay money for the cheap thrill of taking this magnificent animal’s life and putting his head on a wall."
Live on air, Morgan asked his guest to respond to the longtime host of "The Price is Right."
"He said what he said about it, alright? And Bob, he's a well-intended person," said Knowlton. "But if I want to learn about 'The Price is Right' and I want to learn about Plinko, I'll talk to Bob Barker. If I want to learn about conservation, I'm going to defer to the experts at the IUCN, I'm going to defer to the experts at CITES, okay. And the fact of the matter is, all this hate that you're talking about, the one thing I will say to Bob Barker is, the price was wrong! The contribution would have been much higher and everybody would have been much better for it, even up to a million dollars, they scared these people away because they didn't want to go through what i'm going through now."

It is one of the express duties of the US Fish and Wildlife Service to adhere to the principles of the Endangered Species Act and to promulgate policies to protect those species. The Black Rhino is one of the most critically endangered species in the world today, and yet the USFWS approved the permit for the Dallas Safari Club to KiLL one of these animals in Namibia. Supposedly, this rhino is dangerous and is no longer capable of reproducing. Where is the science on these two claims? Has a sperm count been done? Where are the reports that speak to his harming other rhinos? We've been asking for this information for weeks. No reply. In fact, Namibia offers FIVE rhinos a year to trophy hunters - all which are ascribed these qualities. Dangerous and non-breeding. On its face, this is absurd. The FACT is that Namibia wants the money from rich hunters. And the USFWS didn't properly vet the permit process. The bottom line is that some people enjoy killing. And they particularly enjoy killing endangered species, because, after all, it makes them special in the eyes of their community of trophy hunters. We must stop these kinds of events! Are we going to try to save these animals, or not? It's up to us!

As an advid hunter I see no reason as a society or a country that we can hear something like this and cannot be completely appauled and discusted that there can be a price tag placed on endangered animals. It goes to show you just what money can buy.Anything at anytime. I care, do you?

First of all, I strongly suspect that Knowlton is a drama queen and to gain sympathy has embelished the threats to his family. For reference, I enourage everyone to take a look at his "charming" family Christmas card, with his small child brandishing an assault weapon. Does this look like vulnerability? Secondly, I am not against guns and in fact own several. And I am not against responsible sustenance hunting. Thirdly, Knowlton is nothing but a bloodthirstly killer who wants to display the head of yet another critically endangered species to prove this manhood That is not the way to prove it, My Dear. Real men are kind and respect life. Fourthly, Liar, liar, pants on fire! Knowlton, you just want to KILL, KILL, KILL. Please don't make up excuses. Belittling Bob Barker will not help your conscience. Wouldn't it be funny if your pants really were on fire (not a threat – just a humorous image)? Teehee.
Namibia doesn't care about conservation. They've let American big game trophy hunters shoot collared lions who were part of conservation studies. Money is much more important than animals, don't ya know.
Exactly they allow the horrific slaughter of thousands of cape seal cubs, clubbing them to death, and are paid well by a foreign business man for this. This country has a strange way of looking at conservation.

Hunting is not slaughter. I use the life of the animal to feed my family. You go to Walmart and buy a steak that someone else killed. I respect the animals I harvest, in fact I give a prayer over them and thank them for their life, I thank God for allowing me to harvest from his table. God gave us dominion over the animals to use, not abuse. Having a animal die from starvation from over breeding is cruel. Have you seen a cougar kill a deer? Not pretty. 180 grains properly placed if fast and over quickly . hit by a car to die on the side of the road is cruel, who stops and checks out the animal they just hit? First call is to insurance agent to see if they are covered.
Neil- there's a HUGE difference between a Walmart steak and an endangered animal. Please do a little research on the plight of the Black Rhino...and while you're at it, consider the fact that we abuse the animals we 'use'...horrific conditions for most livestock used for human consumption....my 'God' would be none too happy.
Also, Neil, part of the problem is that people have this idea that we were given "dominion" over animals, as if non-human beings don't exist for their own reasons. The major shift of consciousness and awakening that we must have as humans is to realize that our position relative to animals and the earth should be one of stewardship, not dominion. I am not against subsistence hunting per se, but if you are a so-called "ethical hunter," I am disappointed that you don't find Corey Knowlton's actions egregious.
He gave us dominion over them to care for them not to abuse and neglect them or kill them when they are threatened to hang their heads on our walls.
You do not 'harvest' animals your harvest grains. Etc. As a vegetarian I have only one thing to say to you. The only true hunters are nature’s predators, you know, lions, sharks, eagles etc. Human hunters used to exist but it is now been proved that what sustained early humans was grain and not flesh. Trophy hunters are vile. They enjoy taking life for no other reasons than being able to satisfy their vanity at "vanquishing" a wild animal and boast of their participation in an activity that not many people can afford. I have no respect for people like Corey Knowlton. I find it ironic that he is now complaining about being threatened - that's just a small dose of what he has doled out to all the animals that he has killed. The fact that he spent a lot of money on this permit does not make his actions more palatable and less morally reprehensible.
The USFWS is sending the wrong message by issuing this permit. I wish they would reconsider their actions.

Namibian government officials will get the money. No one has come out and said how the money will be distributed. Note that Namibia has allowed animals marked for conservation be shot when the price is right. (sorry Bob Barker)

Rhino poaching has reached epidemic proportions in Africa, South Africa lost nearly a thousand last year and they were declared extinct in Mozambique despite both countries allowing trophy hunting. Where is all that money going, because it clearly isn't going into stopping the poachers.
How does this man expect us to convince indigenous Africans and Asians to stop killing the rhinos for profit when trophy hunters are being allowed to do precisely the same thing ? All they see is a dead animal and an obscene amount of cash changing hands. The message that sends is that a dead rhino is worth a lot of money to someone.

You can say that killing animals is conservation for ever and I Will NOT ever believe it! Corey knowltons beliefs are WRONG. There is no reason at all for this rhino to be killed. There is no science in it, it's just lies trying to make the public think he is doing the right thing. How can he pose with all those beautiful animals that he killed and say it was for their own good!, for conservation! I see him for what he is, not a hunter, but a coward, a killer.
This was an interesting interview. It is a shame that Corey is experiencing such hatred, though; however, he perhaps did not realize the level of detest towards trophy hunters, in general, in killing animals for "sport" although open-minded individuals will objectively try to see his viewpoint and outlook without the name-calling and vitriol.
Look at the conditions in Africa, with all those lions being bred to be shot. Just ask Melissa Bachman how well that went over. Part of the rage is directed at the President of South Africa, as well, for letting the lions be bred for this purpose and no protection for these animals, compounded with severe exploitation.
I don't know, though, if you can blame all the dislike on not getting as much money as first projected. The people of Namibia are used to this every year, but to bring this to the U.S., you KNOW there is going to be outrage over it. If they didn't learn that with Melissa Bachman, then they are learning it now.
I do still wonder who Corey's partner is, on this, and why the partner is not taking the heat, as well. Why is Corey going this alone? Is he maybe getting a fee to take the heat for someone else, or just preventing someone else from having to go through the turmoil? Or, perhaps the article I read from another news channel is incorrect in stating that Corey raised the money with a silent partner.
And as for the post above, that's just bizarre. Why is Nancy Daniels, a commenter on the Stop MB FB page, suddenly all for conservation of this Rhino? If you take a look at some of her former public posts on FB, you will see that she once stated that limited hunting of the Rhino is acceptable if it saves the species. Nancy, you are not the owner of anything in conservation, except for a FB page. The way you're talking is as if you have some sort of international organization under your management, at work on this. Reality check, dear..... get a grip and quit trying to portray yourself as someone of great importance in this field. Leave that to the experienced and knowledgeable conservationists and animal welfare visionaries. The world doesn't need any more self-appointed arm chair wannabes. Sheesh
Perhaps if Mr. Knowlton is so terrified of the "death threats" he has recieved, he should consider saving the rhino he himself intends to kill. This rhino has done nothing wrong; has threatened no one and yet Mr. Knowlton plans to kill him and hang his head on a wall. The idea the the rhino is old and can no longer reproduce, so lets just kill him in the name of conservation is rediculoud and obserd. Save him, Mr. Knowlton, and youre a hero. Let him live out his life on a preserve. Give him a name. I suggest "Walter" in case youre interested. Allow Walter to become the ambassador for all endangered animals. People will flock to see him and pay a helluva lot of money for the opportunity. But...kill him, and it seems you become the rhino yourself. Hunted, looking over your shoulder, afraid for your life. Do the right thing. Im quite sure you'll privately kill lots of more animals to hang in the den.

I can sit here and debate every remark this guy has said, but this is what we true conservationists and activists know:
IUCN, & CITES, are a disappointment and don't know crap. They both made notoriety of this. Period. So did the WWF. As far as Bob Barker, he has been a proponent for animals for over 50 years. He paid to have 3 elephants moved from a Canadian Zoo to PAWS to retire recently. Bob played a significant role in helping ADI get 25 lions from Bolivian circuses to a sanctuary in Colorado. The list goes on. Cory, what have you done????

Hunters claim they are "conservationists", arguing that the only way that wildlife can survive is if it is given an economic value. There is no disputing that trophy hunting is a lucrative business. The question is could it really be more valuable than eco-tourism? And, even more importantly, does it earn income for the millions of poor people who will otherwise regard wild animals as nothing but a nuisance?
Hunting versus eco-tourism
A November 2004 study by the University of Port Elizabeth estimated that eco-tourism on private game reserves generated "more than 15 times the income of livestock or game rearing or overseas hunting". (1) Eco-tourism lodges in Eastern Cape Province produce almost 2000 rand (£180) per hectare. Researchers also noted that more jobs were created and staff received "extensive skills training".

Please do not kill Ronnie the rhino – he is one of 5,000 – he made it this far and deserves to live out the rest of his life in peace. There is not one thing I could buy with the money this man has it is unfortunate that it is being spent on killing. I dream about all the unselfish good this money could do...............
This interview did not help Knowlton's cause . All he did was whine and never once explain how what he does is conservation . He said he would ask CITES, ha, they are the absolute worst group to ask . They take our tax money and have done nothing to help endangered elephants or rhinos . And Knowlton and his " group " of hunters get excited over killing , they bond and party over a dead animals . How is that conservation ? To me , getting permission from the USFWS and bringing this poor rhinos head back into the states and putting it on the wall and drooling over it and reliving the kill ever time they see it is not conservation but is psychotic .

The fact that this particular animal is a so called old non breeding male is merely a smokescreen used by the pro hunting minority and the phoney conservationists that make false claims how killing helps conservation. Only a killer would make such a statement and in fact only NOT killing is the true way to prevent extinction. Another laughable and ludicrous statement is how the money will go towards conservation when in fact most people donate money without wanting to kill the very thing they claim to want to protect. Can someone spell hypocrite because this auction for "conservation" personifies the very corrupt phoney hypocrisy these people are trying to deny. They don't care about conservation,animals or a healthy ecosystem if they did they wouldn't clean out 'management areas' of all wildlife while leaving their trash all over the land. It's a known fact denied by hunters that a live animal is more valuable then a dead one because they can bring in hundreds or thousands of people wanting to see and photograph the animals while a dead animal only has a one time profit. Furthermore the lack of wildlife in many areas that have been over hunted has caused people to visit elsewhere leaving both the ecosystem and local economy that had depended on tourism devastated. What we have here is a man who has enough money to do what ever he wants apparently and a tv show to back him and his hunting habits. What I find difficult to understand is that he now has the right to kill a critically endangered species because some one has deemed it useless. The rhino has survived millions of years on this earth...the only species to accomplish that. But now man is it's biggest enemy. We should try to save all of the rhinos, not kill them because they are old. There are more "ethical" ways to help conservation if decision makers would look at this in other ways that could benefit everyone including the rhinos. There are too many unanswered questions still so why was this approved in the first place? Finally, I would like to know what he plans to do with the head/horns. Will he hang it on his wall to boast about it. That is yet to be seen, but my guess is that it will. So what does that have to do with conservation. More about bragging rights in my opinion. BTW, I was at the protest, a very peaceful protest merely being a voice for this rhino named Ronnie. No one there has made threats of any kind. Do not put us in that group. CNN needs to issue equal time with those who understand that killing for conservation is anachronistic and a frighteningly perverse form of protecting a critically endangered species. Good science and believable data shows that eco tourism (for example) in the long run does more for conservation and local communities. Increasing wilderness areas, building wildlife corridors, engaging local communities in conservation and increasing wildlife numbers is the only guaranteed way to proceed, NOT KILLING.
If the USFWS grants this man a permit to import the trophy from the critically endangered rhino he plans to kill... what will come next? How many elephants? how many mountain gorillas? What I found to be extremely perverse was that Corey Knowlton actually stated that he did not enjoy killing animals. Yet he paid $350,000 for the opportunity to do just that.

I was watching a show last night in England that explained that in Papua New Guinea tribesmen get £8 per tree they fell, that is for one hundred year old tree, and then the middle man gets £1000 for the same tree in the UK. How many trees could you save with $350000, if you donated it to tribesman so they didn't have to cut their trees down. How much wildlife would that save? Christ I really can not understand this man!

Bob I suggest you do some reading on conservation, you could start with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Yes in days gone by when Africa was full of elephant, rhino, lion etc David used to hunt but there came a time when he realised that the way forward was to protect the animals so he gave up hunting and became a conservationist with his wife Daphne. They no longer killed animals whether they be old and past breeding but set up a rescue centre for orphaned wildlife which is still going today. The problem with hunting for pleasure is that the hunter wants a prime specimen to hang on his wall not an old scarred specimen. I will bet that the Rhino Corey kills will be one in his prime. If the money hunters pay goes to the conservation of wildlife why are the rhino, elephant and lion species declining? The thing is that hunters don't care where the money goes, they have their trophy and their photographs and their egos inflated so they are happy.

The Duck Stamp Act was introduced in 1933 and Pittman-Robertson in 1937, so it isn't "over 100 years", not even close. The reason these laws were introduced was before that hunters decimated wildlife and the environment, sure I don't need to tell you what they did to the passenger pigeon and other species, and if you've never heard of Keibab Plateau in Arizona then look it up and see what hunters did there in the early 20th Century.

Bob, the image that came to mind for me with your question was that of Oskar Schindler trying to figure out how many more Jews he could buy. Is a creature more deserving of life (or death) if someone pays more to rescue or (or kill it)? I believe that the question of whether or not an endangered species "deserves" to be hunted for sport is the same answer regardless of the monetary value that has been placed on its head. Killing it is not "more right" if someone has paid $350,000 for the privilege of pulling the trigger. Saving it is not "more right" is someone has paid $350,001 to protect it. It either deserves to be trophy-hunted or it doesn't.
I do not believe that the survival of the black rhino should depend upon who can bid highest. I believe it should depend upon humanity's moral choices.
If a man wants to save the black rhino, where are his resources of time, energy, and money best placed? That's a moral choice. Is sport-hunting really the best way to conserve this species?

I guess what you and a few million others don't get is the very definition of our existence today. Capitalism. I'm not the guy who made the rules we all live by, which is simply, if it doesn't have value, then it won't last very long in our world. If zoos weren't constantly being backed by wealthy people throwing their money into what they believe is a good thing for animals, there wouldn't be any zoos. They do not make enough money from visitors to exist. My point is simply, without someone or some group that wants to throw an immense amount of money at preserving Black Rhino's survival, then they would be quickly killed into extinction by poachers who could care less about any trophy. They want the horn to sell to some perverted land of people that want to grind it up and use it for some voodoo type of medical treatment. In other words without money they no longer exist because they have no value. This is something only people who take the time to enjoy all of gods creatures and the landscape he painted for all of us to live in. We are part of the natural world and definitely part of the echo system. if you want to pretend to live in Walt Disney land where animals talk and then go for it. Chances are you will be arrested for indecent exposure 🙂 Point is WE including all walks of life, need to live together in a land that provides for all that reside here. Lies, lies, lies. This whole thing has nothing to do with conservation. It's all about making MONEY. There are a lot of fingers in this pie. Mr Knowlton can't come cry crododile tear now. There were threats out there long before the auction took place. Everyone there knew what kind of attention they were going to receive on the purchase of this permit. He made his choice regardless of the risk. There is an Endangered List (one would hope for good reason), it should be an International CRIME to kill any animal on that list. If Mr Knowlton cared that much about conservation and the safety of his family he would destroy the permit, let the Rhino live and make sure that the money does indeed go towards real conservation. Somehow I don't think his arrogance and ego are going to allow him to do this. Again the choice and risk is his.

As an academic psychologist, I will use this as a case example of antisocial behavior, especially significant given this man's affluence as wealthy people display psychopathology, we tend to call it "eccentricity". Unfortunate that he doesn't make a $350,000 donation to the cause of preserving the Black Rhino. And shame on Namibia for allowing this.
I am going to be very brief in my post. The killing of this critically endangered rhino is not in any way helping to conserve the species. Please let this rhino live and put the money into true conservation of the species by donating it to the Rangers who fight against poaching of them! Please have a heart and do the right thing!
This is NOT even about hunting or the right to hunt. This is about intentionally decimating an endangered species.
The point in listing a species as endangered is to protect it. Killing one and claiming anything good comes of it, flies in the face of reason.
And Corey-if you are so concerned for your family, perhaps you should not partake in the hunt and donate the money toward....conservation.

I don't really understand the argument that killing makes a person feel more "connected to life." I do not profess to understand the primitive thoughts that go through a man's head when he meets a fellow creature – ancient and enormous and free and wild – and sees an opportunity in this meeting to demonstrate his value as a man to himself and to the world. I do not understand how destruction makes a man more manly. Destruction is what viruses do. Behaving like a virus is a waste of brain.
I believe, though, that men who live their lives on a ladder, see every encounter with every creature, man or beast, to move himself up a rung by moving someone/something down a rung. You push something down a rung by dominating it, controlling it, putting it in its place, subordinating it, removing its rights, and killing it once you've got what you needed from it. This is the way women are treated in patriarchal cultures, it's the way slaves have been treated three most of human history, and it is the way American immigrants treated the indigenes people of the new world. We wiped them out and got 'em out of the territories we wanted live in, so he could be on top.
At the end of a trophy hunt, everybody on the ladder knows where s/he stands: the hunters stand tall, gloriously, victorious over the decimation of fathers, mothers, and family elders. The infants of the slain are "set free" but have nowhere to go because, without the teaching of the elders, pachyderm children don't really know how to grow into healthy adults. I don't see how this behavior is in any way different from that of a population of locusts headed for the wheat field or a population of malaria parasites determined to eat their greedy fill. Invasive species don't care if another species gets wiped out.
What if we had a different model? A model of a circle instead of the ladder? And whenever we met a new creature, what if we decide to regard him as our precious brother rather than as leverage for our own ambitions of dominance and control? What if, instead of studying how we would capture/control/destroy such a creature, we decided to study how we could foster a safe, healthy, natural environment for them where his kind could thrive? What if we replaced the pride of the conquest with the fun of research, the thrill of discovery, the eventual understanding that you could have a more intimate connection with our ancient and mighty brothers and sister than we ever thought possible? Can you imagine catching that one vocalizations tape that no one has ever been able to capture or that moment between mother and calf that nobody has ever seen?
Regarding fellow creatures as opportunities for dominion rather than as opportunities to fulfill man's calling to be protector and guardian seems to me to be a waste of man's potential. I would like to see some other commentators invited into this discussion. Not just pro-trophy-hunting and anti-trophy-hunting guys BUT ALSO some guys who want to talk about what it means to be a man - are we stewards of the planet or just a mass of cowbirds and garlic mustard, invasively spreading our species across the whole world with no thought of consequences?
I'd like CNN to bring in some thinkers to ask the hunters: "What is it to a human? What is it to be a man? What are the best ways to live up to our potential? To kill, tear down, rebuild, re-route, re-shape? Or to learn from the land, the plants and animals and indigenous peoples so that their futures are strengthened along with our own? Are we stewards or just another invasive species?"
really a nice rosy story–but not practical. Kenya tried your approach and they lost 80% of their wildlife. Namibia and South Africa embrace hunting, we have more wildlife than Kenya. Namibia has over 5000 rhino, South Africa has over 18 000 rhino, Kenya has 361 all of which were re introduced from South Africa-go figure. Do you want circles or do you want rhinos????

If the USFWS grants this man a permit to import the trophy from the critically endangered rhino he plans to kill... what will come next? How many elephants? how many mountain gorillas? How many lions? How many animals does this man and those who support TROPHY HUNTING AS CONSERVATION plan to erase from the face of the earth in the name of conservation? Trophy Hunters who claim to be conservationists are a joke. The only reason they care about saving a species is so that they can continue to kill them. It's a fact that the money being paid to kill this animal could be also be used to relocate it to a sanctuary where it could continue to raise money from visitors wanting to appreciate these magnificent beasts.
There is something wrong with people that take such joy from killing animals. Sometimes killing is necessary for different reasons, but it should always be a sad event and a last resort. Killing should never be a cause for celebration. Killing for sport and proudly posing with the carcass of a slaughtered animal is sick.

John, you are correct about the value of eco tourism, but you are totally incorrect about the value of sustainable and legal hunting, it is a major contributor to Namibias wildlife success story, as well as South Africas. fact. Hunting and eco tourism both place a value on wildlife and wild places, to condemn one over the other is a big mistake.
If he's so dedicated to conservation, how about putting his $$ towards preserving habitats instead of bidding on the chance to shoot at something from a jeep...
So, when any of these hunter-bidders are old and aggressive and past they reproduction potential, do we get to hold an auction to get a permit to hunt them?
Namibia would sell their grandmothers, they just sold 11 hapless elephants to Cuba. And if you believe the rhino is really aggressive, I have a bridge to sell you. Plus no one knows when rhino sperm count actually decreases to be past reproduction potential. An older animal can be of more worth to its herd for its knowledge to food and water than for babies. This is all spin by the hunting lobby and corrupt Namibia officials of it being an old aggressive animal.
Morgan Staff: Watch Knowlton's business. It is rumored that he was the front man for the gun business he works for and that they are going to resell the permit. CK even said that he did not think there was enough $ bid for it.
Watch Nambia for what is done with the money – it won't go to conservation, of that we can be sure. We should be spotlighting Nambia for its selling of animals, elephants to Cuba and seal clubbing, as well as this morally corrupt act for money.

This Rhino is not the only animal this person killed in his lifetime for his hunting PLEASURE. In the old days they hunted so they can get to EAT. This man has a FETISH of KILLING and he uses animals to satisfy this.

Southern African countries such as SA, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia are literally in War Zones of the rhino poaching wars, and by war I mean gun shootouts in the bush between poachers and anti-poaching units. 1004 rhinos were killed last year in SA, and this is not even including the statistics in surrounding countries or the claves orphaned by the attacks. Sometimes 8 rhinos are killed in a day. Poachers now use drugs to sedate rhinos and hack out horns while the animal is alive. 4 out of 5 rhinos die of their wounds within 24hrs. Less than 5000 Black rhino remain in the world, and the western black rhino was announced extinct last year.
Many countries are prohibiting the hunting permit of rhino as well as trophy export in effort to aid in the anti-poaching wars. Sanctuaries for elderly rhino are erected by some conservation groups for tourism. Why Namibia’s public announcement to hunt a critically endangered rhino is such an outcry to the world is three-fold: 1) It gives Namibia a terrible name and reputation in view of the affords made by others – people and countries – fighting to stop the killing of rhino. 2) People involved in the war, such as anti-poaching units, emergency wildlife vets, etc. are always in need of funding which is believed that the government does not aid in the manner it should. These Heroes of the Poaching Wars rely on the general public for support and donations to keep up the fight. And 3) There is great concern from the Namibian public, and surrounding countries, as to where the money of this hunt is actually going. Due to corruption the faith that it will go to conservation is very small, and most fear, as it was with past experiences, that the money will disappear into the system.

Firstly most of you are clueless, and I appreciate your good intentions "to save my African wildlife" but quite frankly you have it all wrong if you are opposed to this initiative. here are some facts. South Africa & NAMIBIA have the largest rhino populations on earth. Namibia has over 5000, S Africa over 18 000. Dr Player who implemented Operation Rhino in the late 60s early 70s, when we only had 400 rhino in S Africa, will tell you that the value created by HUNTING for rhino resulted in a massive expansion of rhino across South Africa. we have been hunting rhino sustainably for 34 years plus and our rhino populations have grown exponentially since the start of operation rhino-because they are valued by hunters, and hunters pour big money into rhino conservation. Unless wildlife is valued by human beings it will not be looked after, there would be no incentive to protect wildlife. Hunting (sustainable and legal hunting-NOT POACHING) is a major contributor to funding conservancies, community wildlife lands and private and some state reserves in Southern Africa. It is thru hunting that these vast tracts of land remain pristine and uninhabited by mass human populations, and thus are perfect homes for wild animals. People like Piers Morgan thrive on heated debates, they thrive and make a living from exploiting human emotions–which is the easiest human characteristic to exploit & he is very good at it, and he succeeded in making millions of uninformed people gasp at the idea of hunting a black rhino.. Frankly, this rhino hunt is 100% sustainable, it is not detrimental to rhino populations and it will generate much needed income for black rhino conservation and protection in Namibia. The sustainable utilisation of wildlife is what brought South Africas rhino from 400 to 18 000, it brought S Africas wildlife numbers (all species included) from an estimated 600 000 in 1967 to an estimated 25 million plus in 2012. In Namibia there are millions of acres of land set aside for wildlife by private land owners and by the state, and these pieces of land are utilized sustainably where wildlife, including rhino are harvested. the same applies to South Africa where 30%+ of rhino live on private land, where the private sector owns 50 million acres+ of land dedicated to wildlife, where wildlife out numbers cattle on private land today, where we don't need anyone to tell us how to manage our wildlife, where we know and it has been proven that sustainable utilisation of wildlife works in favour of wildlife and human beings–which is why we have an unparalleled conservation success story, just like they do in Namibia. Now for all of you who are opposed to hunting for whatever reasons, here is another fact that you can chew on. Kenya stopped all forms of wildlife utilisation in 1977, today their wildlife numbers have dwindled by up to 80%. Kenya once had more rhino than South Africa, today they have 361, everyone of which was re introduced to Kenya from South Africa, where we have been hunting rhino for over 34 years, and we have 18 000+. They have 361. leave us alone, leave Corey alone, stop attacking hunters when you don't know what you are talking about. I am a hunter and a conservationist, and I am proud of this.
