READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
It's one of the most successful films thus far in 2014. A romantic comedy with a heartthrob hero and lovable leading lady? No. An action-packed shoot 'em up that covers multiple continents and comes complete with a catch phrase. Nuh uh. How about a star-studded drama with a heartwarming score, and a plot that tugs at your heartstrings. Nope. That's not it either. How about an animated feature based upon a kids toy that's 65 years old. Yep. That's the ticket.
Since opening on February 7th, "The Lego Movie" has grossed close to 200 million dollars. The key to the films success? It may very well be the relationship between the two men behind it, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, co-writers, co-directors and best buds.
"We're like brothers, so we bicker and stuff," admitted Miller, in joining Piers Morgan for a live interview Thursday evening. "But we have a very similar point of view of things, a similar sense of humor. So, we have a lot in common, and we have a lot of respect for each other."
In typical friends fashion, it was at this point that Lord rolled out a quick jab at his pal:
"Most of the time," he said, sitting next to his pal from their days together at Dartmouth.
Aside from the stunning visual animation, and the creative direction of Miller and Lord, the success of "The Lego Movie" has been buoyed by a bucket-full of famous voices, including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, and a certain former NBA star.
"I can't believe we got Shaq to say all that stuff," admitted Lord.
Despite the presence of such star power, Miller insisted all egos were left outside the audio booth:
"Everyone came to have a good time, and so everyone was having a lot of fun with it."
