On a day which saw Assistant State Attorney Bernie De La Rionda deliver an impassioned closing argument in the George Zimmerman trial, on Thursday evening "Piers Morgan Live" invited Jeffrey Toobin and Leslie Crocker Snyder to offer their professional analysis of what was another dramatic and compelling day in the Sanford, Fla. courtroom.
"I thought it was a really good opening to the summation, I thought putting in context not that this crime began on the night that Trayvon Martin died, but it began when George Zimmerman became more and more obsessed with these prowlers in the neighborhood and he got more and more angry. I thought that was very effective," noted Toobin, a CNN legal analyst. "Where I thought it was less effective was all the use, in the second half, of all the so-called inconsistencies. None of them jumped out to me as bald-faced lies, and I thought building your entire summation, or the entire second half, around George Zimmerman's own words rather than the testimony of others, I thought that was problematic, and I think that that was a weakness in the summation."
Snyder meanwhile, a former New York State Supreme Court Justice, shared her opinion as to the performance of the prosecution, and offered a prediction as to the direction the trial will take moving forward: FULL POST
With the defense resting in the George Zimmerman trial on Wednesday, the attention of the nation now turns to closing arguments, and ultimately, a verdict.
With the outcome of the case hinging on whether or not the six women jurors will believe the defendant acted in self-defense, "Piers Morgan Live" invited Thomas Mesereau to share his unique insight as part of a live interview:
"Piers, I don't practice [law] in Florida, but I have to believe there's going to be a jury instruction on causation," revealed the criminal defense lawyer. "In other words you have to have caused what the crime was."
With the jury set to receive the case Friday afternoon, Mesereau marveled at some of the complexities that the half dozen Sunshine State citizens will be forced to mull over: FULL POST
As the mysterious travel details of Edward Snowden continue to dominate the news cycle, on Monday evening "Piers Morgan Live" invited attorneys Gloria Allred and Alan Dershowitz to offer their candid reactions and detailed insights.
Over the weekend, Glenn Greenwald – the columnist for "The Guardian" who is largely credited with breaking the story surrounding Snowden, and his leaked info on government agencies use of secret data-mining programs – appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," taking issue with some of David Gregory's questions.
"Edward Snowden has said, 'I've committed a serious crime,' the newspaper has put this out there," noted Piers Morgan. "Surely he [Greenwald] should be prepared to answer questions about whether anything they have done – in cahoots with this guy, we don't know how far he goes – anything they've done borders on criminality. I think it's a perfectly reasonable question."
Dershowitz, for his part, insisted there is no gray area: FULL POST
